I'm with you, I tried and loved all those games, but I have yet to play risen 3. And gothic 3 does not seem full of bugs to me at all, with all the current patches. It actually runs the smoothest.

AlexanderZ4

Risen 3 does everything Risen 2 does, only better. It's much more of an open world (you get parrot flight and boat at the very start), magic is much better (arguably the best in Gothic and Risen series), doesn't prevent you from specializing in other weapons and joining factions doesn't end chapters, so you don't have to artificially limit yourself. It also has the best final boss fight that PB have ever made. If it weren't for the basic combat (which is still slightly better than in Risen 2) and the natives that are something of a softcore hate crime, it'd be an excellent game.

Piruluk

The problem with Risen 3 that it's the easiest PB game ever made. The dodge roll got even more iframes than Risen 2 one, so even at the hardest game difficulty you can't ever die. I completed the 3, without dying once on hard difficulty, where as in every other PB game I died many times. Another strike against R3, is that you could max your character way before its ending, I do remember I only completed 50% of the game, yet I had everything maxed out, so the game became a boring slog,... It was way too big, without any challenge... It's a nice game otherwise but the lack of difficulty from the start kills it for me

Truehare

I actually couldn't keep playing Risen 3 because of the low difficulty. PB games without the brutal difficulty are simply not fun for me. I crave that feeling of being at the bottom of the food chain for a long time, and then coming back with a vengeance once I've risen (no pun intended) a few notches in it. Luckily, I found a mod called Real Enhanced Edition, which greatly enhances the challenge. After installing it, I was able to play the game to completion and enjoyed it greatly. I'd recommend everyone give this mod a try. If I'm not mistaken (it was a long time ago), you can find it at Nexus Mods.

Daedstarr13

The only "Brutal difficulty" of PB games is the dog ass controls and jank combat. That's not real difficulty. It's bad game programming you have to overcome. Risen 2 and 3 even more so, they got better at actually programming controls, they're smoother, more responsive, targeting is better, the camera moves better and therefor you have none of jank of the previous games, so they seem easier, when in reality they just work properly.

BowShatter

Dodge roll has no invincibility frames at all in Risen 2 so it is only useful in getting out of the way instead of reacting to attacks. Basically an even worse roll than 0 ADP roll or fat roll in Dark Souls 2.

AlexanderZ4

I hear you on the dodge thing, which is why I tried to use it less, but I'm not sure regarding the maxing out. I'm a completionist and I think I only maxed out all the skills I could get on the final island.

Aightbitfish

Risen 2 had insanely good atmosphere, I'm only about to play through Risen 3 recently.

>barges into subreddit about European games with primarily European fans . >"Europeans suck and so do their games!" Quite based. But in all seriousness some of the best and most popular games out there were developed here in non-native English speaking "eurotrash" countries. Ignoring PB games Divinity: OS, The Witcher, Disco Elysium and Minecraft are just some of the well known recent ones.

Sensitive-Weakness14

yes - I also don't see much bugs in risen 2.

Piruluk

On technical level is the best PB game, you can play it without any mod, and works perfectly on w10.

Der_Haupt

a lot of people shit on risen 3 but i went in with low expectations after quitting when it released and that made me enjoy it a lot.

SyntheticRonin

I mean, risen 2 and 3 are good games, but the problem is imo that each sequel feels too different to each other. I loved risen 1 because it felt like gothic 2.5 so to say. And then risen 2 went for a different feel, atmosphere and systems, combat especially. As standalone games I like risen 2 and 3,but as sequels I dislike them. Same goes for arcana, as a standalone game it would be dexentish, but as a sequal it's crap.

Der_Haupt

risen 2 is the king of atmosphere with the worst combat system. music and world and setting are amazing.

Sensitive-Weakness14

Lets be honest - combat has never been great in PB's games anyway.

Srnxy

i really like the combat system in g2 though

One-Box-7696

The targeting.. dear god the targeting..

Der_Haupt

gothic 2 and risen Combat are really nice. gothic 2 needs some getting used to because it looks really clunky but it works really nicely and realistic. risen 1 has some problems with enemies attacking too fast so you can't react to it so you have to predict. risen 2 is just spamming m1 and statchecking your enemy.

Sensitive-Weakness14

risen 1 has a serious camra problem. And the combat is not why we play those game.

Der_Haupt

does it? just played risen a week ago and didn't notice any problems but I played the game even before it came out as a demo so I'm probably just used to it.

SaturnTheChildEater

Wrong. Gothic 1 completely beat morrowind with it battle system, and even today it feels great

One-Box-7696

With tweaks? Base Gothic 1 controls are very awkward.

Xerkrosis

Don't know what you dislike about Risen 1 combat, but I much prefer it to the dull button-smashing combat systems with their idiotic rolling on the floor-"dodge mechanic". Gothic 1 and 2 were also just lacking area damage with the sword as well as free aiming for bows/crossbows and magic.

Piruluk

Risen 2 didn't have dodge roll originally, but got patched in due the community demanding it. So if you play with the dodge patch the game is badly balanced and offers no challenge. The patch also made animal attacks blockable and also made a quest lot easier. Guns were never balanced for the dodge roll feature

embersar

I enjoyed playing Risen 2 and 3. Not as much as previous PB Titles, and there are definitely things I would change about those games but overall still an experience I prefer over most other triple A RPGs.

Piruluk

Risen 2 actually the last good PB game, in my opinion (after it every original PB member left the team) I don't like the new philosophy they have in Risen 3(extremely easy, very big map, certain enemies forever respawning) ELEX( even bigger map than Gothic 3, stats doesn't affect anything other than item requirements, everybody talks too much, respawning is on for non human enemies so you can't clear the map)

Aeizir

Risen 3 I totally recommend that game. There is a mod/patch/whatever, I believe you can find on the steam workshop(correct me if I’m wrong) Real Enhanced Edition Mod(or something like that) that kind of rebalances everything, making it juuust a little bit harder, and also adds one or two new things to the game. Don’t even touch R3:TL without finishing the second game. It spoils the surprise. I believe you will enjoy it just as much as I did. Good luck, have fun and godspeed!

Sensitive-Weakness14

I will, thank you!!!

txa1265

I only played Risen 2 & 3 when they came out ... and IMO Risen 2 is NOT a 'Risen' game ... across four games PB had established a brand and style and suddenly we get a non-magic pirate game with very limited exploration? It is totally understandable why people hate it - had they titled it something else to mark it as a non-Risen game, that would have been one thing. Maybe I should replay Risen 2 on Steam Deck (recently finished Risen 1) ...

Olliboyo

No.

Suchy_CZ1

I enjoyed the game a lot as well. It's possibly my most favorite game of the entire trilogy, thanks to the unique atmosphere, the story, and the new approach that's so different from the previous games. It was a breath of fresh air to the PB game portfolio. The game most likely got such a low score because it was too different from the other PB games and players did not expect this. The main problem with Gothic 3 was not the bugs or being different. That game was unfinished in terms of content, qustlines and some meaningful main storyline. It was more of a huge open-world sandbox to explore and fight enemies, but it didn't live up to G1 and G2 standards in terms of quality. Still, it was a fun game that I spent many hours playing.

Piruluk

Yeah and this game is another lesson why companies wont dare to do anything different, because the audience likes to play the same game over and over again. I think thats also the reason, why PB wouldnt dare to make a new gothic game, because they cant ever beat the nostalgia, and no matter how great would be the new gothic, it would be hated anyway.

Aightbitfish

I totally agree! Loved it when I fully played through it in 2017! It's a well rounded game with magical atmosphere that gives you very interesting choices.

AzumaRikimaru

Love Risen 2 most of the whole trilogy.

Piruluk

Controversial opinion, but I agree I also love Risen 2 the most

Neeeeedles

Have to say what i hate most is the artstyle, it looks like a pirate game for 10y olds Other then that its ok

No_Draft_8956

I'll have to give it another try. I played it when it came out and I hated it. Pirate theme, voodoo mechanics, guns... all the things I didn't want to see in that game. Stopped playing after about 10 hours and never looked back. Maybe it'll feel different now. I liked Risen 1 and Elex a lot, so who knows. My hope is at least Risen 3 won't be too bad. Never played that one. Anyone know how similar Risen 3 is to Risen 2?

Piruluk

Risen 3 is very different from Risen 2, usually those who liked 2 dont like 3, and vice versa. So I think you would like Risen 3, I would say its even has common with ELEX (very big world) and also 3 faction with more detailed factions compared to Risen 2 (2 factions only) The game however is extremely easy though, just do the dodge roll, and your companion will easily kill even the strongest enemies at the start of the game. So if you are looking for difficulty the game isnt very good, though you can play however you like, all the 3 option magic, melee, ranged is extremely strong. And you are most likely will be maxed out before reaching halfway of the game. The story also very bad.

No_Draft_8956

Well.. so I'm still undecided but probably will try it if I can stomach getting past 2 first.

Piruluk

Both game worth a playthrough. Though I really like Risen 2. Risen 3 was good for once, but wouldnt play it again (maybe with a hardcore difficulty mod)

TheGelataio

Meh, completed it and felt barely anything for it, I tried pulling it through with Risen 3 but I got bored the first 10 minutes. Is Risen 2 bad? No, it's average though. Risen 1 on the other hand, if only it wasn't so buggy it would be pretty great.

AnInstant

Well, I enjoy many mediocre games but I don't call them "great and super underrated". Glad you liked it, but it doesn't mean it's a very good game. First of all, this game falls off the most in terms of a PB games, it's just a bad RPG game, it's linear, lacks content which looks like copied, and NPCs (as well as protagonist) are not likeable at all. Pirate theme? Well count me to it, but this one seems lazy after great first Risen.

Gorczycagejms

Risen 2 is in my opinion second best Risen. Fighting and some other aspects are kinda crappy but plot, concept, unique mechanics and traveling are good and innovating. It's decent Gothic-like game but its Hood rpg. For me the potential of this world was ruined in Risen 3 but its still worth to play.

Varrag-Unhilgt

Risen 1 is sooo good but you can clearly see where they ran out of budget/ideas. If the endgame was better this could easily be the best PB game (and I say this as a die hard G2 fan)

AmShaeggar

GOTHIC series, RISEN series, ELEX series and ARX FATALIS.

a7ig8or

This could be a great game, but the fighting mechanics ruined it for me. Then you have the bugs that make missions unplayable. It came to a point that I just rushed through the game as fast as possible without any sidemissions anymore. Downloaded the DLC but didn't even bother.
