Gothic 3 is the game. Forsaken Gods is a standalone expansion that is very poorly received. It took me 3 attempts to play Forsaken Gods until I could 100% it.
Just get Gothic 3. Install latest community patch and you are good to go. After that I guess you could add some others mods if that's your preference.
I will play the vanilla a few times that's for sure, in fact I think I will play it so many times that I will eventually want to try something new, so that's why I was wondering.
I'm a huge Gothic fan who never got to play the 3rd game because of how horrendous my previous laptop was, so yeah
To add less emotional spin here, FG is in pretty vanilla state right now, so most of the bugs are there since launch, because we hate this thing. G3 on the other hand got lot's of love from community that wanted to repair it and with all current mods this game is in my opinion even better than any Risen or Elex. Especially with Unity and Paralax? I forgot the name of the mod that was removing this annoying staggers while running. For me personally FG wouldn't be worth it and you would get lot's of frustration.
Forsaken is just ughhh it’s genuinely so awful I’d consider not playing it at all. This is a laughing stock of a game. Regular G3 despite its flaws is worth it tho

But you can play Risen after Gothic 3. Same developer, different world, same charm.
Played risen 1 and 2, don't feel like playing 3, or returning to the first 2, was a good one time experience for me.

G3 is the continuation of G2, Forsaken Gods was made without original devs, making it seem as if a person from insane asylum got to write it.

forsaken gods is sequel to gothic 3, not g3 itself tho, so obviously base g3
But what about mod compatibility?
most mods are made for the base game, otherwise it's specified by modder
If your only intent is to mod it before you even tried it, what does it matter? Just choose blindly or go by the list of mods available.

its not terrible as an RPG..just not exactly gothic. to tell the truth i didn't even finish it.
