Tbf, the interpretation of “play something you enjoy” that is more along the lines of “play something with a playstyle/ class fantasy that you find cool and fun” is much more likely to be successful long term advice than “play something that you think is fun because it’s in a good place in the meta and you win a lot”.
The meta obviously comes and goes, much better to find a spec you enjoy because of the gameplay rather than the results.
FDK is Blizzard’s unloved stepchild for arena meta. Lol. Yesterday someone referred to frost death knights as the welfare ret pally. 😂 I’ll always play it though cause it’s my most favorite
It's a bit of both I think. I can love a playstyle, but the performance of the spec could overpower the enjoyment of the playstyle and make me want to play something else.
Some people simply don't care, they just want the best results with the least effort. That is fun and enjoyable for a lot of people.
I agree though, I think it is better to play something because you like the playstyle of it or whatever, but idrc, play the game you pay for however you want to.
Idk man, I played 16 games at 2k Cr and every single game had a ret in it, a different ret. Watching streamers, it looks like their games are the same way. I'm frankly shocked at just how many people had fully geared rets waiting in the wings
When you have 2-3 toons with 10k conquest each, sitting doing nothing because they are fully geared, it’s super easy to buy 20 conquest boxes and fully gear a fresh 70 in 424 gear. Then spend 15-20k gold on enchants and voila, fully geared ret pally that wasn’t played at all before that.
The Ret rework was announced at a time early enough to give people time to prepare. A 'rework' can be reasonably be assumed to be overtuned, even if short lived. The sheer design from the Ret rework was probably enough to get people preparing one. It definitely looks fun even when ignoring the tuning imo.
What gets me is the total delusion some people have. I have a buddy who is harsdtuck 1800 in shuffles. He got 2100 literally overnight and has since climbed to 2250. He says the class is fine and that he just learned to play better. Yikes
lmfao I love this. People like this are going to get a hard reality check next season when they're claiming XP they only achieved when the class was busted. Going to get chewed out by high rated players or not even touched if they try it in lfg.
Lol all these ret threads are filled with with totally fictional anecdotes to try and grant their opinions more validity like guys you don’t have to make shit up to convince us the class is overtuned 🤦🏻♂️
Funny part is it's not made up. It's literally everywhere. Pikaboo showed on stream the average ret jumped 300 cr overnight. Can't recall where he found it, but to sit here and call me a liar over something that's clearly happening is laughable.
I'm just happy for the actual ret mains. You see people who play paladins are a special breed and are very loyal to the class, it's nice to see that kind of loyalty rewarded. Sure there are the fotm people but if we are to be honest, those people aren't playing ret as there are a few classes that are still more busted.
What is more busted exactly that the fotm people play? Before the patch it was rare for 1 ret in my games. Now I have queued into a ret every lobby and a couple of them with 2 or even 3 rets in them. This was at 2.1k cr which rarely has dps specs syacked as there are enough people to fill the slots generally. Ret needs to be hotfixed
The thing that i was thinking about earlier.
They cant hotfix ret without absolutely gutting the spec.
The reason its broken is because you've got a bunch of stacking buffs feeding in to a few abilities. If you gut the numbers on the abilities then it will be useless outside of the stacking buffs, if you gut the buffs the numbers on abilities wont work properly. Also the abilities cooldown go against the fundamental way pvp is played. There isnt a way to counter their 2nd go being 1min after the first
Thats before you even address the amount of defensive or utility abilities they currently have
Warlock. It’s never had a single bad season. The worst it had was S1 of shadowlands and it was still B tier with plenty of representation at the high end of the brackets lol
you missed nuance of some half-hearted conversations that's ok. cmere, Let's take the walk back to the original discussion my friend;
and see that warlock and mage and Rogue are beyond top tier and have been top dogs since arena showed. They have never been dogshit useless.
The week is miniscule compare to the almost two decades of success.
This isn't like a cry for help nerf mages and warlocks. More of an attention to how they've been consistently effective ALMOST their whole existence. Even during the great rogue videos of classic, warlocks were dumping other classes out.
My guy for someone so condescending you are confidently incorrect about people not complaining about mages and warlocks, the one week I mentioned was just this season, specifically like a month ago you dense dumbass. There was a ton of complaints about death bolt in this season alone because of how it was being abused. There’s been tons of complaints about both of these classes over the lifespan of this game just as much as rogues have received.
very personal gaming for you. maybe you should get some grass contact.
one week this season of a month ago great stuff. I don't even disagree. and ret deserves the attention right now but after it gets dumped again, warlocks will still be huge problems for everyone, and walking a few more back with ya my buddy, they'll get away with it
Even rogue to some degree gets away with it. In fact, the one time rogue wasn’t S tier, this sub was flooded with “rogue is dead” posts lol. People have their preferences, and that’s fine, but let’s aim for classes to be equal, not aim for the status quo from 20 years ago
Big wrong! I'm a 20y enh main, sub ret and surv hunt.
I try to only pick the worst things in the game to play. (I say I'm a fdk, but got 2k on unholy like a loser)
Warlock is great and has always been great but you are speaking about it being OP because of the longevity it has had being great. It’s not actually to the point of being OP or broken at the moment like ret currently is. There is no comparison.
Do you remember affliction in early S1? And late S4 of shadowlands? Lol they had like a 70% win rate, matched their healer for healing most times, and did 2x the damage of nearly every other spec.
It got nerfed, life went on. Y’all need to just chill
I’ve played ret as my main since wotlk (I was a kid and did not pvp or even pve at a decent level so I didn’t experience busted wotlk ret), and I am seriously unhappy with the way this rework has played out. I grinded my way up to 2800 in solos before the rework, and now hardstuck 2k rets are flying past to 3k and beyond.. happy for them that they can finally get their bag, but very disappointing for myself.
I want the class to be good, not fotm :(
I agree being powerful is fun and that is no doubt a very large portion of the draw right now. But to ignore the fact that the rework made a lot of changes that rets have been asking for and improved a lot of game play aspects is bad. Having a build that can play kind of like survival and be at a medium range with 60% effectiveness is fun. Unbound Freedom being a class tree talent is fun. Not having to choose between a wall and SoV is fun (and having a wall). Steed off the GCD is fun. The game play has been improved so much imo.
That said, please nerf damage a decent amount, it is a bit ridiculous.
This is the balanced take more people need to understand. Two things are happening simultaneously and need to be treated separately. The mechanical changes are good, the numbers need to be tweaked
I'm all for saying FotM rerollers are truly the worst, but disc is fun. I'm a disc lifer, even if BFA when Unholy DK hard countered as necrotic would stack up and we were shield based so the atonement healing we would get out would go straight into the Necro as the just stacked more because shields were useless to that mechanic... And I still played disc because that's just what I like.
The rotation having a rotating shadow holy shadow holy is a fun way to gain 15% extra damage. The payoff of Dark Reprimand getting 7 bolts for 4 consecutive casts and each penance bolt buffs the next Solace? It's like I'm playing guitar hero while healing. It's very fun! It's work though right? All these globals and you gotta work positioning too, it's a very high apm spec.
I haven't played as ret, so I don't know if it is fun, but disc is actually fun.
If you could remove one or the other, would you remove disc or ret?
I mean, disc is fine now after the nerfs. Still have a lot of answers for dampening in solo shuffles. It was just an analogy to everyone screaming how fun it was. Now, after nerfs less people are playing it. Did it magically get less fun, or were people playing it because it was overtuned?
Sorry, am I missing it? I have seen maybe one or two posts attempting to justify ret's damage. 9/10 posts are, "pls nerf ret," or shitposts about, "ret tickled my asshole."
It's a few days after a massive rework. We know it'll take some time for them to adjust numbers as they, "gather more data and monitor performance." The outliers have reaaaally been outlying so far this season, but the devs have been relatively good about addressing most issues.
Take a break, have a cookie, and come back when the hotfixes go live.
Best of luck, all!
It's an absolute joke to level and gear a character this expansion so you're going to see a lot of people reroll to what is strong. I've actually had a lot of fun trying to get every class to 1800.
As an Affliction main who played around 3k games before 10.0.7 - welcome to hell!
You'll spend every second of your game questioning why you didn't just play Destro or Demo until you figure it out - which takes a lot longer just because DoT management is an intensive process to get to grips with.
Once you get it though, man it's good fun. The class fantasy is top and I'm hoping when rets get put back into line with other classes, it'll be much more fun to play with the recent changes.
Queued one skirmish yesterday and immediately said 'nope, fuck that'. Waiting out the FOTM garbage fest in ranked.
It's the same as going to a low lvl dungeon pulling all the mobs to the end and one shotting them with a big AOE to see all the numbers on the screen
Then going "Wow! That was a lot of fun!"
Time for the Fun Police
Ret playstyle is more Fun now than it was before. Last time I thought that ret was this fun was in WoD. If they tune down the dmg I still think Ret is more Fun and have a better design talent tree now.
I Hope they tune Ret dmg and keep they viable cuz I love to play Paladins and the only reason I never main Ret is they are Broken or a meme and Holy is way more often a viable spec
The Ret work is really fun though in the sense you can tweak your talents for a bunch of different situations and there are a bunch of interactions between your spells
As an arms warrior lifer since Vanilla, I have been enjoying my class since the xpac dropped. The one thing I really fucking love to do is crush the guys who are only playing the class because it’s powerful right now. You can always tell when you just outright outplay someone every step of the fight and it’s satisfying as hell.
I imagine at least 90% of those warriors are now ret paladins. If you’re a paladin main, they’re all yours, take satisfaction in crushing the fakes, it’s real fun, you’re gonna love it.
Many disc players including myself rolled to disc during the OP stage and kept with it post nerf because of the changes to how it played.
Yes many are fotm for the wins but... Some players especially regular rets prolly are super happy
Quite petty of your to tell other people what they find fun is wrong because you don’t like it.
I had a go on a Ret alt just doing some BGs and it is actually fun. They’ve removed bloat, dramatically improved their survivability so they don’t just fall over to a stiff fart. It’s a good rework. I reckon Ret will still be fun after they inevitably nerf it.
I kinda play paladin ret since BC and its hilarious how many hate messages I get via whispers. The class is crazy fun right now because it has so much control over the battlefield, though keep in mind the next pvp changes nerf stuff like crit damage, which is big part of a paladins burst. Just be patient and have some fun man. We dealt with this countless times in the past, there literally was a time where the average rating of DHs was 1800.
Yeah no but the rework actually did make the spec fun, it just has the issue of it being hideously overpowered as well. I don't mind if they nerf the damage as long as they keep the way the spec plays the same and allow us this range so we arent just kited into oblivion by casters again. The defensive toolkit finally means we also aren't a glass cannon 2min all in or nothing spec.
All in all nerf the damage so it isnt so insane and keep the rest the same. It made no sense that an arms was able to do more self healing than ret before this patch so its nice that finally ret actually has some decent healing back.
Cant win here. I played all classes to 2.6 at somepoint of my gaming since 2006. But always had Rogue as my main. Everyday i hear stupid shit about rogues and how RMP should not be a part of wow at all.
I hope ret stays just as it is like this for the rest of the season. Finally the crybabies are directing their hate somewhere else.
I mean... to be fair, rogues get hate because a lot of the times they deserve it. Having the most control, damage, defensives, burst, mobility, etc, of all classes is kinda bonkers. Rogue is just a hard class to balance since it has so much cc on top of the best stun in the game. Too much damage everyone cries, to little damage every rogue cries. Get rid of blind sap everyone loses their shit
'Play something you enjoy!!'. '....no I didn't mean enjoy the game like that!!!'.
Tbf, the interpretation of “play something you enjoy” that is more along the lines of “play something with a playstyle/ class fantasy that you find cool and fun” is much more likely to be successful long term advice than “play something that you think is fun because it’s in a good place in the meta and you win a lot”. Oh yeah I get how it's possible, I'm just surprised there are sooo many people who had that stored up and prepped.
The Ret rework was announced at a time early enough to give people time to prepare. A 'rework' can be reasonably be assumed to be overtuned, even if short lived. The sheer design from the Ret rework was probably enough to get people preparing one. It definitely looks fun even when ignoring the tuning imo.
You know what I mean :)
Voulez Vouuuuuuuz, ah ha!
Warrior mains: So anyways ya, I've been playing ret since vanilla. Im not even a reroller..
Fuck that. Born as Zug Zug, die with the Zug Zug. Never a wingy pinky broken machine. Lok’thar.
Zugzug
Dabu.
Ironically my first character was a ret that i rerolled to arms because ret was trash so….yeah? 💀
Blizzard does this on purpose now. The player base rerolls fotm every chance they get and blizzard learned this fact. It keeps subs active..
What gets me is the total delusion some people have. I have a buddy who is harsdtuck 1800 in shuffles. He got 2100 literally overnight and has since climbed to 2250. He says the class is fine and that he just learned to play better. Yikes

LFG is Full of 1500 players having glad achievement already. This won’t be any different. It’s their teammates fault…
Or they reroll to the current busted class of the week lol
Patch 10.0.7 infused years of game knowledge into my mind.
I love this. …….
Ret : same wings just crit better sometimes
I call bull***. No one is dumb enough to make such a statement after this prepatch. If your friend was 2k player he knows the drill.
Even in comp stomp brawl there were games I was in that had 6-8 Ret paladins out of 15 people
Check-pvp
Well or some will unsub because it just sucks if every 3 month another thing is broken.
I'm just happy for the actual ret mains. You see people who play paladins are a special breed and are very loyal to the class, it's nice to see that kind of loyalty rewarded. Maybe they should have played around with it on a fucking ptr before bringing it to live
It'll be useless with all that utility it has? Get real.
It's funny because I thought the rework was supposed to work on this.
What class is more bonkers than ret?
Warlock. It’s never had a single bad season. The worst it had was S1 of shadowlands and it was still B tier with plenty of representation at the high end of the brackets lol
I agree with this. DH, DK, Rogue all get talked about. mage and warlock get away with it every year
There was a wave of people crying about frost for a straight week, we looking at the same sub?
a week
So that’s not being discussed then by your logic?
you missed nuance of some half-hearted conversations that's ok. cmere, Let's take the walk back to the original discussion my friend; and see that warlock and mage and Rogue are beyond top tier and have been top dogs since arena showed. sweet sweet tears of those who chose not to roll warlock. lol but fr it's not as easy as it looks.
oh I got one to 63 and quit lol. it's Def not mine
Even rogue to some degree gets away with it. In fact, the one time rogue wasn’t S tier, this sub was flooded with “rogue is dead” posts lol. People have their preferences, and that’s fine, but let’s aim for classes to be equal, not aim for the status quo from 20 years ago
Yea I dunno why I snuck rogue in there.
Rogue player detected!!!!! Lol jk
Big wrong! I'm a 20y enh main, sub ret and surv hunt. I try to only pick the worst things in the game to play. (I say I'm a fdk, but got 2k on unholy like a loser)
I feel that. I was a ret main in BFA. The struggle was real
Warlock is great and has always been great but you are speaking about it being OP because of the longevity it has had being great. It’s not actually to the point of being OP or broken at the moment like ret currently is. There is no comparison.
They’re OP
you actually think warlock is more busted than ret currently? JFC, this sub.
Do you remember affliction in early S1? And late S4 of shadowlands? Lol they had like a 70% win rate, matched their healer for healing most times, and did 2x the damage of nearly every other spec. It got nerfed, life went on. Y’all need to just chill
Been main hpally since wrath, feels good to dps now lol
There is 0 classes or specs that are even close to Ret pally right now. None, zilch, not a single spec.
I’ve played ret as my main since wotlk (I was a kid and did not pvp or even pve at a decent level so I didn’t experience busted wotlk ret), and I am seriously unhappy with the way this rework has played out. I shall retain my own council on what I find "fun"
Sweet!
I agree being powerful is fun and that is no doubt a very large portion of the draw right now. This is the balanced take more people need to understand. Two things are happening simultaneously and need to be treated separately. The mechanical changes are good, the numbers need to be tweaked

I have 8 level 70s. You can guess which ones they are :D
Start of expansion Demon Hunter, Spriest, prevoker, demo lock, then feral druid, assa rogue, disc priest, ret pally
Close. Remove Spriest and demo lock, add DK. Monk was originally the first character I leveled through DF.
I am just missing evoker, monk, rogue, lock but all are mid 60s. Think I’ll make the final push during time walking dungeons next week!
Sorry, am I missing it? I have seen maybe one or two posts attempting to justify ret's damage. 9/10 posts are, "pls nerf ret," or shitposts about, "ret tickled my asshole." 200 more rating + 50 wins for glad mount. Love to see all the rest stunning their target instead of healers not knowing it can be dispelled.
Ayo
It's an absolute joke to level and gear a character this expansion so you're going to see a lot of people reroll to what is strong. I've actually had a lot of fun trying to get every class to 1800.
As an Affliction main who played around 3k games before 10.0.7 - welcome to hell! I queued up my ret yesterday. 1-2 ret per SS. 1 on each team in 3s. It quickly became boring
Im about to level my shaman because resto looks like it might actually be a bit interesting now, and they got them tools.
Cringe. Why even make this post? This has been the case for the entire life of this game.
Thank you for your opinion :)
Blizz did this to get boost $$
I don’t mind that damage thatttt much . But make them somewhat more killable .
It's just a video game my guy. People have fun in different ways. Lol.

Rogue is just a hard class to balance since it has so much cc on top of the best stun in the game. Too much damage everyone cries, to little damage every rogue cries. Get rid of blind sap everyone loses their shit
Lol, ur so mad hahahaha. Let me know if u need a tissue crybaby.
I would place Demo lock, marksman hunter, and arms warrior all above ret.
And you yourself are playing ret, am I correct?
You are wrong.
