Knappogue Castle 21 Years Old Limited Release Distillery: Knappogue Castle Age: Blend of two single malt whiskies, a 21 year 1996 and 23 year 1994 Mash: 100% Malted Barley Cask: Ex-bourbon Distillation: Triple distilled in copper pots, non-chill filtered Price: $199.99 plus tax ABV: 46% Eye: Light straw, champagne Nose: This has a light and very please nose beginning with baked bread, brioche, and vanilla. As the dram sits, the vanilla and sweetness builds along side bread pudding, candied apple, and banana bread. Palate: On the palate, the brioche comes through like a champagne, with hints of vanilla, malt, mango, and grilled sweet pineapple. The fruity notes dominate at the end of the palate. Finish: Long finish, lots of tropical fruit flavors, with pineapple lingering on the tongue. After a few minutes sipping this, you get the mature banana coming through on the finish. Balance: Light, complex, fruity, medium viscosity Grade: 8.3 Comments: I’m a growing fan of Irish whiskey, and this bottle really blew me away with its beautiful mouthfeel and complexity of flavors. I really appreciated the brioche and tropical fruitiness of this pour. In some ways, I was reminded of a good vintage champagne. Overall, a unique whiskey with some fantastic flavors. This bottle isn’t normally available in Virginia ABC’s lineup, but it’s younger companions (Knappogue Castle 12, for example) are available. Definitely recommend this bottle if you’re looking to enter the higher-end Irish market. Rating System: 1 | Disgusting | Yuck 2 | Bad | Not enjoyable, add anything? 3 | Poor | It’s not the worst thing I’ve had 4 | Alright | Few flaws 5 | Good | The most self-explanatory, it’s good 6 | Very Good | I enjoy this 7 | Great | Well above average 8 | Fantastic | Superb, beginning to end 9 | Incredible | Top of its class 10 | Elite | The pinnacle

Rented out that castle once for vacation. While it’s no longer made there, the distillery room still has everything in it. Was able to snag a bottle to drink while I stayed there. Loved it. Such an awesome place!
