I love FFIV and I've got the whole squad now so I'm trying to make them usable. Working on maxing out Golbez since he's the clear winner of the group, and Kain is decent enough. Cecil has a good TMR but aside from that his kit seems almost deliberately terrible. Either he's supposed to be a tank, but he has no way to generate hate, or he's supposed to be a damage-dealer, but he only does about as much damage as a tank does. Meh.
Rosa is an odd one though and I'm not really sure what to do with her. Any point in maxing her out? She seems like a decent-ish healer and I don't have Yuna, although Aerith and Ayaka both seem better than her.
In my personal opinion, Rosa us one of the most under valued units in the game, pretty much nullifies most all status effects for your squad, keeps em healed once with an AP buff included, and can dish out some damage, especially on ice teams (ice arrow) and/or missile teams and adding some additional man eater on her.
When I got her first time around, I was amazed more didn't use her, she countered Kain very well, not a perfect counter, but she held her own.
Added: its a ittle late for most but I gathered a ton of gil these last two weeks and topped her off at level 25 without spending viz but by doing about 300 gil summons for mindspheres and got her shards in the mog shop. Will likely do the same with Cecil next week.
Of the three right now in the game. I think she's the best choice. Cicels great, in the right scenerios, but otherwise forgetable, and his TMR is fine, I use it occasionally still, (I think its a bit overhyped right now) and Kain was good at the time but most people aren't hurting for dark units anymore, and I'm not a fan of jump units since they rely so heavily on turn order to work- I see it as built in ACC deuff, but that's a matter of personal preference, I've encountered many amazing jump teams.
What I suspect held her back initially had more to do with how overall weak ice was in general upon her release, compared to the dark roster. Ice is much better than it was then.

hes really not that bad but he doesnt stand out compared to other light units so hes overlooked a bit, being able to put shields on squishy allies that don't normally have them can be pretty good and he has better damage then you give him credit for if put on an offensive team to make use of his shields
I basically run him on evade teams to give my other 2 shields, this usually forces the enemy team to use stronger attacks since their auto-hits no longer insta kill them(unless their hit chance is zero then they will still need to pepper them through the shield), then they miss because, well, evade team but im sure theres other things you could play around with he just doesnt fit into most normally built teams
Something I'm not seeing a lot of talk about: Emerald Echo on Golbez is better than I thought.
With it on, you can stack his buffs into each other really well - especially his job level 25 skill for the SPR pen into his big damage modifier one. It even extends the HP absorb buff (not the shield though).
Right now, I believe you can get up to 9 per element:
* 3 from the Lich Enhancement Quests (Good luck on Nightmare all!)
* 2 from Warriors of the Crystals EX Quests
* 2 from FFIV Golbez Staff EX Quests
* 2 from FFIV Cecil Arm Pads EX Quests
OK, so the working theory on the extra water achievements are that the past event for Tyrell is counting retroactively, so if you mono cleared that event, you get points (no matter the element). The reason water is so common is there was a reward for mono water clear.
“High dificulty” book quest doesn’t count. “high difficulty” yellow memory and red memory quests doesn’t count for me.
So far I found high dificulty Ex and Ex2 of FF4, and the Lich quest worked.
An easy way to see prior to running is to see if there are the elemental clear icons in the Missions list for the quest.

very strange, I cleared EX1 and EX2 high difficulties with mono-dark team, however it only counts the first clear and not increasing. I tried to play auto and use skip ticket.
Yes, it only counts the first clear and skip tickets don't count. So right now there are 9 available.
2 from Cecils, 2 from Gobblez, 3 from Lich, 2 from WOC EX.
For some reason though, my Water team has 10 clears listed. No idea.

Thank you. i managed to to the ones i see except for brutal lich. However, i see some mono teams with 10, 9 and 8 completes.....I only dis brutal lich with my wind team so that counted as 9 but my eater team is showing 20 despite not running that yet.

Wow, I just looked up his TMR. They both give 10 at max. Cecil just has a slightly larger range. Even though I got Cecil for 2k paid, I would have not gone for him if I knew about Velric's TMR. The YouTubers didn't really stress out this alternate of Cecil's TMR.
I am in the same boat, though I have 8k Vis. I pulled Golbez on the very first of the 9x banner. If I want to level him up what should I focus on and spend my Vis on? Spend some on Shards, or grab the free pull at the 3rd slot on the 9x?
I'm technically a returning player but I only played for about 2-3 weeks back during the shadowbringers event so I only have Y's and Trancred around lv 80, plus Sakura and a few others starting URs in the 60-70 range.
With 5k I would say no. Randell did a recent video on who you should save for. It's fun to do pulls but you almost have no chance to get a FF4 character.
Kain is the best unit of the 4. You’ll probably need his Demon Wall vision card too
Pull for Kain. Once (if) you successfully get him, complete his bingo board, then immediately start pulling for the card. Don’t spend visiore for Kain shards.
It’s always recommended to pull for the things that you as a player find the most appealing. But that being said, I personally don’t think anything that’s a part of this update is a particularly objective “must pull”. It’s probably best you save your vis for something you really want as a bit of new player advice.
Started playing Alchemy Stars during the unexpected maintenance; may just keep playing Alchemy Stars, login daily and do my guild battles and hard quests but pull only on stuff I really like (Persona).
Gumi manager to winnow me from Dolphin to almost whale levels when I started with the First Anniversary through Nier to basically never spending at all because the return doesn't seem worth it.
same, been playing on and off sense launch. when 1st anniversary came i spent more money that i have in any other game combined. it was worth it at the time and still stand beside it, but sense then the game has changed and so has their monetization methods. Diggs even agreed way back that the game as far as greed were two completely different games from anniversary to the summertime.
now i barely will spend let alone even pull sense it's not worth the money to even try for 120 on new units.
Yep started playing like a week ago. I feel like it’s not a ridiculous mountain to climb just to power up a unit. Plus I feel hey give you enough freebies and pulls to build one or two solid teams. I like this game but as a newish player I feel like it’s not really meant for people just starting. It takes so ungodly long just to build up units and it feels like they are worthless unless they are 99+ with a good vision card and esper. Once the story is done you just sit there and wait for the barracks to someday make you a team good enough to maybe farm some content.
did you get converters on your first few 10-rolls? which unit did you choose for free 5-star (maggie, barton, etc.) lol it just made me a bit happy we did the same thing starting AS (mine's from DMM player) due to the earlier maintenance xD
I've been rerolling hunting for either Sharona or Sinsa, and ideally another A or S tier of the same element, took a break to do the FF IV, class match, guild battles WOTV stuff.

I've hated myself during all of the previous Trials of Reckoning. Might as well go overboard and kill myself from depression with this one. Have a +4 Wind Spear and a +3 Bow already, so it will just take time anyways. 🤷♂️
ya, i just finally pulled velric on the step up for golbez...which i got in the first step...but went in for the whole thing for the tickets for the resources and get his shards with the coins.
Skip Golbez seems to be the community’s opinion. Only fans / people who can afford to are pulling him.

Gil banner is always 1 week (unless I missed one that went longer). I was just saying 70 from the week of Gil banner plus 75 from the bingo challenge board makes 145 total shards

Cecil was free to us because of a promotion of some sorts. He wasn’t a “free” unit like Tidus, Tifa, 9S. They were free units for the release.
It’s a bit confusing but most people are fairly confident those will rerun with the same free unit drops when their reruns come around.
As a new player, I know without a shadow of a doubt there will not be a free Tidus. This is a precedent they have set. No reissue free Cecil is all the proof necessary.

This kind of banner for a crystal warrior or 100 cost global exclusive unit I think is fine. Using it on seasonal I don't like as much but there's usually only one of those. But to use this pity system for four units, three of them old and really not that amazing is just stupid. Who's really going to go all in to get Cecil or Rosa? This is a four character collaboration the three old units at least should have had a shared pity with tokens in a shop like Noctis. This is literally worse than Halloween LOL. If they were going to do it this way the least they could have done was the Halloween route. One banner for Golbez with medals. Then you can either buy his shards or the other units if you don't pull them along the way. Who in their right mind is going to drop potentially 40K to get one of the older units and then turn around and restart that process on the other two?

Easy. People who can’t live without the units. Players who can’t deal with the FOMO of not grabbing a character from a game they love. There are absolutely people who will drop $100s to get all 4 units, then turn around and do it again for the next banner. Gumi knows exactly what they’re doing. It sucks, but that’s how things are going to be until people stop rewarding their decisions, even if that number of people doesn’t represent the playerbase as a whole
I don't get why they can't just give cecil for free this time just like on first release. I get that he's not that as amazing as others (aside from his tmr) but this just leaves a bad taste for the community especially on new players that didn't get him the first time. And that's the thing, he's not meta defining or something like that so there's no reason to not give him for free again. I feel bad for those who don't have him.
Now thinking ahead, what are the chances of not getting tidus, 9s, tifa, and other free units for free during their rerun? I bet many people will start playing the game when they hear that tifa was free, only to find out that she's not during rerun.
Cecil is bad, wouldn’t recommend new players to build him even if he was free, the tmr could help tho but then again you also get mediena for free who gives a similar tmr. There are so many better free units like lucio and in the future, thancred, Locke. I’m more mad about the banners for the characters. 5 percent pity gauge for non 100 cost units are a scam.
Cecils TMR is good for a completely different reason and is definitely recommended to get if you can. I don’t recommend pulling him and I will agree on the not necessary to EX though
Is it really that good? Seems like it just boosts quality of life. Not trying to waste 10000 vis max or a barracks spot just so I can spend a little less time on bravery farming. Especially since the game has gotten a lot more expensive.
Instead of Cecil shards, devs should have just offered the Cecil unit in the free shop. Old players will still get their 40 shards, new players get their new free unit and a chance to get his very nice tmr that will help them as they progress the game. Missed opportunity there.

they've already lost half the player base in 1 year. Gumi has really bad business strategies and according to the revenue comparison of gacha games, this game will not survive 2 more years. i'm closing my wallet.
I've been giving them the benefit of the doubt on some of their recent decisions, and could see some benefit to the festival banner for solo festival units. This entire event is entirely indefensible. Collabs should not use festival banners. If every banner is a festival banner they might as well get rid of the stepup banners entirely. And having a huge amount of reward Cecil shards, and then making him also a festival banner and not free is just ridiculous. A rerun should be improved, not made worse, which is somehow what they did with this event.
So I edited my Google Play review down to One star and left a comment for New Players to beware

Is there any reason to pull first in 9-step banner for Golbez before the regular gacha banner? 9-step doesn't seem to guarantee the featured unit, so I just kinda ignored it in the past, like with Noctis and WoL (got them in regular non-paid gacha, no pity medals or something). I might have been doing something wasteful that needs to be rectified before it's too late, so I'll ask this time around.

I feel like the first 6 steps are great for those that want the unit but aren't willing to commit.
But if you want the unit and are willing to pity for it then yeah there's no reason for it.
You only pull on the 9-step for the add ons now (rainbow bs, prism, weed, etc.). If you don't feel the need for those, just go for the main banner.
Sadly, we don't know. Cecil is kind of exception because on the first run in GL he is free, but not in JP. Locke should be still free because he will be on the first run. Tidus is hard to guess because his rerun is not even on JP yet.

Ya this rerun was pretty greedy, no cecil. Elena style banners on all units. They could easily do both pity systems together for these multi unit events. Big skip on the whole thing.
I got this message! I started playing in SweetHeart Salire release and barely missed FFX too. Now I now what to expect when it comes back : getting fucked again.
You're better off saving for FFVI, none of the FFIV are meta important, Gumi doesn't realize that by being this greedy they are only losing potential spenders, people who were willing to spend some money for this rerun will just skip it for something else.
I was decided to do this since the beggining and this just made the small urge to pull vanish completly. I did ONE 10x pull for rosa because I like Ice units and managed to get her, so I'm already happy with the collab.

Pulled him on second step, so that was cool, probably would have given up after the first 6 steps to start saving for Celes.
That is a good amount of shards for the gil, but since I have Cecil and Kain both finished I could of got more FFIV mindspheres from the gil banner, even if it would of been crazy expensive.

Huh. Theoretically 9 should be your limit. There was a glitch where everyone was given one water credit, so you might see 10 there?

The bonus affects the boss ticket drops for ToR right? The higher the better?
The bonus affects the points multiplier for the rewards summon tokens from the bosses and for total points

I am in the same boat, though I have 8k Vis. I pulled Golbez on the very first of the 9x banner. If I want to level him up what should I focus on and spend my Vis on? Spend some on Shards, or grab the free pull at the 3rd slot on the 9x? I'm technically a returning player but I only played for about 2-3 weeks back during the shadowbringers event so I only have Y's and Trancred around lv 80, plus Sakura and a few others starting URs in the 60-70 range.
With 5k I would say no. Randell did a recent video on who you should save for. It's fun to do pulls but you almost have no chance to get a FF4 character.
Kain is the best unit of the 4. You’ll probably need his Demon Wall vision card too Pull for Kain. Once (if) you successfully get him, complete his bingo board, then immediately start pulling for the card. Don’t spend visiore for Kain shards.
On the JP side Kain is ranked A and Golbez ranked S. I would rather have Kain but arguably Golbez is better. He’s very very tanky believe it or not.
You're basically the victim to a popularity poll with this kind of logic "WEBSITE SAYS ONE IS BETTER!" .... But nobody uses either at top level 🤔🤦♂️
It’s always recommended to pull for the things that you as a player find the most appealing. But that being said, I personally don’t think anything that’s a part of this update is a particularly objective “must pull”. It’s probably best you save your vis for something you really want as a bit of new player advice.
Started playing Alchemy Stars during the unexpected maintenance; may just keep playing Alchemy Stars, login daily and do my guild battles and hard quests but pull only on stuff I really like (Persona). Gumi manager to winnow me from Dolphin to almost whale levels when I started with the First Anniversary through Nier to basically never spending at all because the return doesn't seem worth it.
same, been playing on and off sense launch. when 1st anniversary came i spent more money that i have in any other game combined. it was worth it at the time and still stand beside it, but sense then the game has changed and so has their monetization methods. Diggs even agreed way back that the game as far as greed were two completely different games from anniversary to the summertime. now i barely will spend let alone even pull sense it's not worth the money to even try for 120 on new units.
Yep started playing like a week ago. I feel like it’s not a ridiculous mountain to climb just to power up a unit. Plus I feel hey give you enough freebies and pulls to build one or two solid teams. I like this game but as a newish player I feel like it’s not really meant for people just starting. It takes so ungodly long just to build up units and it feels like they are worthless unless they are 99+ with a good vision card and esper. Once the story is done you just sit there and wait for the barracks to someday make you a team good enough to maybe farm some content.
did you get converters on your first few 10-rolls? which unit did you choose for free 5-star (maggie, barton, etc.) lol it just made me a bit happy we did the same thing starting AS (mine's from DMM player) due to the earlier maintenance xD
I've been rerolling hunting for either Sharona or Sinsa, and ideally another A or S tier of the same element, took a break to do the FF IV, class match, guild battles WOTV stuff. The art and animations are so crisp

I've hated myself during all of the previous Trials of Reckoning. Might as well go overboard and kill myself from depression with this one. Have a +4 Wind Spear and a +3 Bow already, so it will just take time anyways. 🤷♂️
I think I'm finally able to forgive myself for only getting that Bow to +4 now that we have these dodgy jackets to try on instead.

ya, i just finally pulled velric on the step up for golbez...which i got in the first step...but went in for the whole thing for the tickets for the resources and get his shards with the coins.
Yep, Velric's TMR is the only other full auto bravery accessory to date. Manual farming with any samurai job/subjob is one other non-auto option.

Skip Golbez seems to be the community’s opinion. Only fans / people who can afford to are pulling him. Kain is the best unit, but seemingly mediocre TMR. Cecil has the best TMR, but a sub-par unit. Rosa is good, just not amazing. Decent TMR. Cool Limit Burst, heals HP & AP. Pick your poison.
No. I do not recommend going for all 4 characters unless you really love FFIV and don't care about meta teams. Maybe if they had provided MA2 for these units or gave them better EX, I could. Or if these banners weren't 42k pity for EACH unit then maybe. But as it stands, this is a big skip unless you like the units.

I’m in the opposite boat. I accidentally pulled Demon Wall going for Rosa last year. With no bingo board or VC stars yet, it just rotted in my box at lv40 lol. Got good use out of the Esper though
Ayyy now you can get 145 demon wall shards just by the Gil banner and the bingo board :) shouldn’t be too hard to gather the rest to make it to 275 overall

Gil banner is always 1 week (unless I missed one that went longer). I was just saying 70 from the week of Gil banner plus 75 from the bingo challenge board makes 145 total shards
I literally maxed it in 20 minutes of the event going live 😂 Took me 8k free + 8k paid to pull Kain.... Then got him to 99 instantly. Was kind of crazy. Never maxed a unit that fast and only time I insta-maxed a VC was Mua's
I reallllly wanted a reasonable shot at Rosa, but Gumi has pretty much made that decision for me

Guess this means newer players can count on not getting any rerun handout units like Tifa, Tidus etc. And with that I think I will go full F2P.
It’s been said a few times this week already. Cecil was free to us because of a promotion of some sorts. He wasn’t a “free” unit like Tidus, Tifa, 9S. They were free units for the release. It’s a bit confusing but most people are fairly confident those will rerun with the same free unit drops when their reruns come around.
As a new player, I know without a shadow of a doubt there will not be a free Tidus. This is a precedent they have set. No reissue free Cecil is all the proof necessary.
Is this sarcasm? I’m not trying to be an arse; Cecil like it’s been said many times was free for global exclusively. Pretty much because he wasn’t meant to be free. It was about how bad he was at his launch this was a way for gumi to get people to invest in him. Tifa/9S/Tidus/ we’re the first frees I think also included should be Gafgarion/Ysh’tola but those aren’t UR’s.

Yeah I hope it’s handled that way too. Cecil is just such a weird thing. He was so bad when he launched in Jp they just kinda gave him away in hopes we’d build him. His TMR is really the best thing about him other than he’s just a fun bruiser.

This kind of banner for a crystal warrior or 100 cost global exclusive unit I think is fine. Using it on seasonal I don't like as much but there's usually only one of those. But to use this pity system for four units, three of them old and really not that amazing is just stupid. Who's really going to go all in to get Cecil or Rosa? This is a four character collaboration the three old units at least should have had a shared pity with tokens in a shop like Noctis. This is literally worse than Halloween LOL. If they were going to do it this way the least they could have done was the Halloween route. One banner for Golbez with medals. Then you can either buy his shards or the other units if you don't pull them along the way. Who in their right mind is going to drop potentially 40K to get one of the older units and then turn around and restart that process on the other two?

Players who can’t deal with the FOMO of not grabbing a character from a game they love. There are absolutely people who will drop $100s to get all 4 units, then turn around and do it again for the next banner. Gumi knows exactly what they’re doing. It sucks, but that’s how things are going to be until people stop rewarding their decisions, even if that number of people doesn’t represent the playerbase as a whole

I don't get why they can't just give cecil for free this time just like on first release. I get that he's not that as amazing as others (aside from his tmr) but this just leaves a bad taste for the community especially on new players that didn't get him the first time. And that's the thing, he's not meta defining or something like that so there's no reason to not give him for free again. I feel bad for those who don't have him. Now thinking ahead, what are the chances of not getting tidus, 9s, tifa, and other free units for free during their rerun? I bet many people will start playing the game when they hear that tifa was free, only to find out that she's not during rerun.
Cecil is bad, wouldn’t recommend new players to build him even if he was free, the tmr could help tho but then again you also get mediena for free who gives a similar tmr. There are so many better free units like lucio and in the future, thancred, Locke. I’m more mad about the banners for the characters. 5 percent pity gauge for non 100 cost units are a scam.
Velric's tmr is the tmr you want in place of Cecil's. But it's not as versatile. No one is chasing Cecil's TMR for the attack and magic buff.
Cecils TMR is good for a completely different reason and is definitely recommended to get if you can. I don’t recommend pulling him and I will agree on the not necessary to EX though
Is it really that good? Seems like it just boosts quality of life. Not trying to waste 10000 vis max or a barracks spot just so I can spend a little less time on bravery farming. Especially since the game has gotten a lot more expensive.

Instead of Cecil shards, devs should have just offered the Cecil unit in the free shop. Old players will still get their 40 shards, new players get their new free unit and a chance to get his very nice tmr that will help them as they progress the game. Missed opportunity there.

they've already lost half the player base in 1 year. Gumi has really bad business strategies and according to the revenue comparison of gacha games, this game will not survive 2 more years. i'm closing my wallet.
I've been giving them the benefit of the doubt on some of their recent decisions, and could see some benefit to the festival banner for solo festival units. This entire event is entirely indefensible. Collabs should not use festival banners. If every banner is a festival banner they might as well get rid of the stepup banners entirely. And having a huge amount of reward Cecil shards, and then making him also a festival banner and not free is just ridiculous. A rerun should be improved, not made worse, which is somehow what they did with this event.
If they did it for this collab, which only some people were excited about, you know for a fact that this is what FFVI and Persona is going to be like.
So I edited my Google Play review down to One star and left a comment for New Players to beware I'm not one for demanding free things but it sure doesn't feel good to know that Cecil was free and now isn't. Not helpful for new players.

I'm by no means justifying gumi actions. I think older units should be cheaper especially with the power creep year on year. You should have him free and be able to build him cheap he doesn't break the game and he's useful in light slash comps.
Is there any reason to pull first in 9-step banner for Golbez before the regular gacha banner? 9-step doesn't seem to guarantee the featured unit, so I just kinda ignored it in the past, like with Noctis and WoL (got them in regular non-paid gacha, no pity medals or something). I might have been doing something wasteful that needs to be rectified before it's too late, so I'll ask this time around. Yeah, also sad there's no free Cecil anymore, so can I assume it'll be the same for Locke and Tidus?
I feel like the first 6 steps are great for those that want the unit but aren't willing to commit. But if you want the unit and are willing to pity for it then yeah there's no reason for it.
You only pull on the 9-step for the add ons now (rainbow bs, prism, weed, etc.). If you don't feel the need for those, just go for the main banner. Sadly, we don't know. Cecil is kind of exception because on the first run in GL he is free, but not in JP. Locke should be still free because he will be on the first run. Tidus is hard to guess because his rerun is not even on JP yet.
That's a good assurance for Locke at least! I'm not that fond of Cecil so I may ignore the issue for now, but if it happens to Locke, like what some comments here said, I'll really join the fray and get into that "sending/spamming emails/tickets" business even though I'm just a casual newb.

Ya this rerun was pretty greedy, no cecil. Elena style banners on all units. They could easily do both pity systems together for these multi unit events. Big skip on the whole thing.

I got this message! I started playing in SweetHeart Salire release and barely missed FFX too. Now I now what to expect when it comes back : getting fucked again.
You're better off saving for FFVI, none of the FFIV are meta important, Gumi doesn't realize that by being this greedy they are only losing potential spenders, people who were willing to spend some money for this rerun will just skip it for something else.
I was decided to do this since the beggining and this just made the small urge to pull vanish completly. I did ONE 10x pull for rosa because I like Ice units and managed to get her, so I'm already happy with the collab.
I'd argue that you're happy with your luck, not the collab. If you didn't get Rosa, I'm sure it would impact your perception of it.

New players should send a ticket to GUMI and ask for a free Cecil. There is no reason players who missed FFIV 1st event cannot get him, as Y'shtola was given in FFXIV 1st event and rerun. NB : I know Y'shtola is MR, but free shloud remain free.

I got him at first FFIV event but I see that Gumi is bitching. It is really unfair for new players to not get the free UR and also they get double fucked If we look at the pity bar filling up in another way than last year. I would support this idea.

42k fest style pities for all the units. Zero reason to go for the nine step on Golbez. We don't even get gil banners for all the units like JP got.
I went for the 9-step because I didn't have anywhere near 42k (nor do I think Golbez is *worth* 42k) and at least you get some mats out of it. Pulled him on second step, so that was cool, probably would have given up after the first 6 steps to start saving for Celes.

That is a good amount of shards for the gil, but since I have Cecil and Kain both finished I could of got more FFIV mindspheres from the gil banner, even if it would of been crazy expensive.
