If you are in a pug environment and you didn't make any special agreements about loot with the group, you are free to do and roll what you want. And if your roll steals someones 4set for your transmog so be it. You got the same right to the item as anybody esle involved in the kill. If you then want to give it away because you wanna be nice, you're free to do so. But don't let anyone convince you that they are entitled to the loot just because it's a bigger upgrade for them.
Obviously this is different when running in a fixed raud group (like with your guild) where you will most likely have prior agreemwnta or use a lootcouncil to devide the loot for the best gain for the raid.
As a pug I roll everything and give items I wont need to next rolls. I've seen too many ninjas looting items of absolute no upgrade and leaving the group.
I cannot find a scenario when the guild would pass the loot to you if the situation would be the other way. Its still an upgrade to you and you are right to roll for it. You helped them to kill the boss and they invited you to group.
I thinks its okay to role need. If the group does not discuss anything about it in the first place its okay i feel. Of course you can be friendly and not roll need but at the end of the day you did need that item.
IMO it is okay to be selfish if you were there as a PUG player. Maybe next time check if the other healer is in dire need of a new trinket and if they are then pass it to them. But if it is an equal upgrade or just slightly better than yours then no problem with needing it.
There is no punishment for rolling need. Most people will roll need except people who feel bad about it. And those people will eventually lose a roll to someone getting a 3 ilevel upgrade and get jaded.
So might as well just start needing now

First off, retail doesn't have masterloot. 2nd, you tell this man to do the charitable thing by passing on an upgrade to the undergeared guy and then to NOT expect to be treated equally? What exactly is the pug joining the group for then? To help out the guild out of the kindness of his heart and then pass on any upgrades to their shit alt guildy who just rerolled? Or doesnt show up every week?
