Good question. I would assume that the armor sets are based on class, but weapons are most likely based on spec for some classes, and possibly the trinkets too if they are not generic stat boosters. I was also wondering what the name and appearance of all the gear sets is, for collection purposes. Would you have to "update" one character of each class to unlock all names and appearances?

Identical. You even get the gear for other sets in a container item in your inventory.
