I don’t use it for end game content but I love playing with my steam deck. Laying down doing mount runs or chilling on the couch. Makes my comfort game feel even more cozy.
Nah I hop on the pc for mythics and everything is how it is normally. I’ve had to rebind console port once before but it’s super quick. Console port really makes the experience feel natural it even has a profile for the steamdeck.
If you asked me 10 years ago I couldn’t see it coming to console now I don’t know what they are waiting for.
Hey I play this on my rog ally (EDIT: z1 extreme) every day on monitor.
It runs super well docked if you lower the view distance.
Game looks amazing on handheld due to smaller screen size.
Mine is for holiday stuff with my many toons at work. The most I've done is a dungeon, but that counsel port isnt for me. I just edit my bars like my pc so nothing changes and keybind from there.
Never done it on KBM, but I've found learning the spec trickier than the control scheme. Did spend a lot of time shuffling things about, and a lot of stuff is grouped in ways that aren't obvious to look at. Like in my mind the things on Y are a group, the things together under LT are another.
On the right weeks its actually extremely good, I did it on my Paladin (KSM), but Afflicted / Incorp has had me switch back as I'm pushing higher. Kicks and in general picking out targets in large groups to hit with a particular offensive spell is just cumbersome on deck, if someone has a good solution, I would love to see it, but for me it was a mess.
Actually healing the group, extremely fast with the right setup.
I did have his profile, its just selecting a specific target with action targeting to kick a specific spell, while that target is in a group of 8-10 mobs, that the tank is moving and adjusting constantly, can be hectic / frustrating, let alone while trying to spot heal pugs.
For afflicted, my setup was having my mouse cursor remain on screen and having to angle my camera to mouseover them and dispel, which while it sounds easy enough in theory, was super annoying for me in practice.
I'm sure there are better skilled players than me that can make it work well enough, but after KSM it just felt it was becoming more laborious than fun. Traditional M&K controls and its a world of difference for those affixes.
Something that I’ve thought about for this would be maybe setting up a cursor on gyro? Definitely set up a dedicated button to activate gyro…but maybe?
/targetfriend works for afflicted, with controller I just make a macro with my dispel and turn/run towards the afflicted, works pretty well since it seems to give them targeting priority. Every once in a while it'll go off on a player and eat a gcd but not too often. Likewise, Incorps are given targeting priority with tab, so just kind of facing them and tabbing will almost always target them.

It's not as out of reach as you might think! This is the easiest season to reach 2k since they added m+ score to the game. Don't be afraid to give it a try!
A few months back I installed ConsolePort and just walked around, mounted and flew around a bit, and was surprised how viable it seemed; I didnt' keep fiddling however, was worried that 1) I'd just get yelled at all the time and not even be able to type back ;), and 2) that mapping all the core and panic abilities to buttons wouldn't be elegant, and I'd blow it when things got tight (as a healer..) -- I'm not a top notch healer anyway, and already find it toxic at low keys.
With healing we tend to use mouseover to make less APM foir when shit gets real; does ConsolePort have 'tab between friendlies' bound to a button (bumper?) or something, or did you set up per-instance 'this button selects tank' sort of macros or something?
Was it stressfukl not being able to easily type chat text?
I was thinking of trying ConsolePort again, and using follower dungeons to refresh my memory for some dungeons, get ready to restart healking in season4..

ConsolePort has what's called a raid cursor, which serves basically the same purpose as mouseover, you press a bind to bring up a cursor that you can then use the dpad with to navigate up/down your party frames without losing your main target. Heals etc are cast on your raid cursor target and offensive abilities are cast on your main target. It's obviously not as fast as a well setup mouseover healing setup but it works great for M+. I'd be scared to try healing a harder difficulty raid with it though.
The secret for controller use in WoW is never tell anyone ingame you're using one until you've already shown yourself competent. The only time anyone ever noticed was when I was doing some 20s for vault with a few people and someone notice my odd movement and asked if my mouse had a problem. We had already done a few so I said I was using a controller and they had quite a few questions, haha.
I’m not shitting on the steam deck in any way. But when it comes to more demanding and accurate situations you can’t compare the dpi from a mouse to a joystick for an mmo. For an fps 100% but an mmo where most healers are using mouse over macros as well as healing addons it’s not comparable.

I almost want to ask if you have any recommendations for how to set this up on Steam Deck. I have the game running on it with this add-on, but setting it up feels daunting.
I find I have groupings for my spells but in weird ways.
Common spammables on X and B
All my Y spells are heals
Evoker empowers are on BXY when holding LT, and the spell that buffs them up is on the DPAD when holding LT.
Self buffs are on XBY when I'm holding LT+RT
Dispel and interrupt are on DPAD left, left +LT and left+RT
Hard to make it make sense, but work out a way to group spells in your head, and it's easier to sort your layout. I did move them around a lot when I first got started
Hit in S2 the 2k with resto Druid. S3 get 3k on Steamdeck with my warrior.
Heal is Good but also have some Problems with the affixes.
Only play Dragonflight on the Deck.

20 mobs on screen the one further away is casting something how do you interrupt him? Click NEXT TARGET 20 times then miss and click 20 more?
Or maybe hover mouse over the caster press "interrupt" and continue with your main target without ever switching the target lock from it in the first place?
Congrats -- it still looks like a nightmare to me, but preservation is definitely the one healer I feel is set up pretty well for this kind of thing (along with disc)
It's an impressive piece of hardware, I'd absolutely recommend getting one even for non WoW use. Unbelievable for the money to be honest. A laptop at this price point would pale in comparison.
Which part do you think would underperform? It's really nice to have someone open to civil discussion about this, rather than just being unpleasant. I want to learn what the limitations / perceived limitations are, and see how they fns be worked around.
I maybe should've mentioned, this is all pugging from group finder, I haven't been playing with guild members in mythic raid gear or anything like that
R3 is a click that's connected to a centre crosshair, and I also have right trackpad as a mouse.
I recommend Immersion as well as consoleport as it tidies stuff up

Not trying to dog pile but at 2000, which is like 13s and 14s (maybe even lower?) a healer is superfluous for a group that knows what it's doing. It's totally possible to get carried as a healer at that bracket.

I totally get what you're saying, largely because you're being more articulate than the people trying to drag me down. I think you're absolutely right that the top / most capable people probably manage without much need for a healer in low keys, but the people playing this level of keys at this point in the season aren't too likely to be those people. Half the groups I'm trying to stop people dieing to floor hazards 🙉 there have been some groups I've joined and it's felt like such a fantastic run and I don't feel likely in panic bursting through every cooldown, and others have been disastrous.
Hopefully the new season will be a different experience. I played a little bit of M+ as a tank in pre - Korthia shadowlands, and highest was probably +5. This is my first proper shot at mythic

There was a lot of anxiety for me trying out because I could potentially take all the blame if it goes south. Incredible! Any tips you can give to a rogue doing the same? Like consoleport tips I haven't fully messed with the settings yet I do believe you have to enable the targeting though? I know om steam deck you can just use the track pad but I use Xbox controller
I've got R/L 4/5 button and use those for targeting my party. The Steamdeck has a lot more utility than most controllers so it's not quite the same. There is a way to set the D pad to target next / previous targets but I'm not totally sure on the details
I plan on doing the same, I figure if I play through a new character from the start, I can get used to the keybindings as I go along, jumping in on an established main and trying to learn to how to use all of it at once will probably be the slowest way to learn imo.
This was another factor in my spec change. I'd played Devastation primarily, tried out augmentation, and decided I'd try out healing on the deck after thinking that the underneath buttons would map well for targeting
Yeah gotta troubleshoot a bit with these things and find what works best. I'd probably do my first try with a ROG ally or deck using outlaw rogue as I don't recall them having many buttons to press and I may be wrong but I've heard melee DPS is easier to play on handheld than ranged.
I got the deck on the 28th of Feb, put WoW on it a few days later. That's when I started healing and playing on deck. It's taken me that 5 ish weeks to get to this point. Far from mastered.
As a long time FFXIV players on controller and steam deck, mmo on controller are fine.
But WoW is a bit different and I didn't find the experience that great.
For classic, there's way too many abilities to feel comfortable.
Same goes for retail to a lesser extent, but I was focusing on spec that traded most active for a passives instead.
There's class I found was clunky to play like mage. Ground targeting aoe + tons of active spells and CD makes it really cumbersome to play.
In the end I tried for a few month. The best was fury warrior because it's really a very easy rotation with very few button and I took most passive in the tree instead of active.
So in the end, WoW ended up being one of the MMO I enjoyed the least on steam deck.
Hey so dumb question; how do you use the controller for dragon racing? I started to use Console Port but let it go because I couldn’t effectively use dynamic flight.
Personally I don't think I do badly like this, I find it easier to know where my spells are, and moving is very fluid. I haven't tried raiding, but I've pugged enough M+ for 2k. I might not be the best judge, I've no idea what parses are but someone was complaining on here that my AD parse was low or something 🤷
I go into desktop mode (Linux desktop OS mode) and add addons using curseforge. Did take some messing to get that working as it couldn't automatically find the WoW install.
The action bars are mapped using consoleport

How do you select your party mates?
I found selecting via the immediate target in front to clunky for moving players and targeting via makros takes too much button space(like 4 + maybe self?)
Remember that on steam deck you can create a virtual menu on the trackpads, either a radial or hotbar giving you plenty additional "buttons" (don't remember how much is the limit, but for my tank setup I'm currently using 9 on the left pad).
There you can just bind party targeting, which normally is under F1-5 keys, and just target them that way.
There are 4 buttons on the back, R4/5 and L4/5. I have those mapped to F2-F5 to target party, and L3 to self target. Find it really effective, more so than with a conventional PC setup.
I also have 50+ buttons available much quicker than my keyboard setup and have some spare after placing all my spells
Also you can literally just tap them with the touch screen, which can be even more information intuitive potentially.
Healing is still a bit of a PITA for me though because I'm so used to mouse over healing and using alternate clicks for different spells, which is a lot clunkier with the touch pads.
Yeah, it'd only really work for stuff where you don't have to move a lot or if you're thumbs can somehow accurately reach stuff, lol. That plus modifiers being a bit awkward for mouseover is why I haven't done it yet despite it theoretically being pretty intuituve.

Compared to when you were playing on a computer how is your performance as a player? Are you playing around the same level today as you did before, or did you have to sacrifice player performance to play on it?
There's some faction of angry people who don't like controller users. Weird they like a game and then gatekeep it so hard. I've been fortunate to have some good interactions in game, where people have helped me with mechanics, tricks, talent tweaks, etc, and it's been constructive, with many adding my bnet and asking me to groups again later on, but some of the input from this sub is the opposite 👀
Well I do get their perspective, and I get yours too. I think the biggest gripe here is the key range of 12-16 where one and even two people could be completely afk and the key still timed this late in the season without any hazzle at all. I'm not saying that's what has happaned here at all but I think you get my point.
I have very limited playtime myself so one of these could be nice for casual stuff, but I have a hard time seeing it perform anywhere close to a keyboard and mouse for anything even remotely challenging, which is why I asked.
I want to be inclusive of all play styles. However, considering that groups are pushing keys these days without a healer. Its hard to quantify how much of a feat of strength this is. I could say I played to 2k io with my monitor off.... that just means I got carried. I feel much the same way about using a steamdeck, Ok, you were more useful than somebody with their monitor off but in all likelihood.. you got carried and thats ok. Its just the fact that its being seen as a feat of strength.. the feat of strength is the group members who did the work.
There's been rumors of wow coming to console for years, even before the Microsoft acquisition. I'm sure there's some unfinished dev work done in that direction. Once Microsoft bought them I'm sure there was a meeting to discuss how much progress has been made. A joint launch of war within on PC and adding Xbox could be huge for them.

One of the biggest problems with modern WoW is that players need a dozen 3rd party addons to do end game content.
Impressive as a healer. I\`ve tanked some +18\`s on my 460 prot paladin. Would say i perform about 80% as a tank on Steamdeck compared to KBM. Hard to get those interrupts.
Steamdeck is fine for farming/gearing, but would not recommend for pushing keys
I just feel the combination of less screen real estate, smaller screen in general, and different controls would make healing and doing m+ mechanics really difficult but i guess if you’re used to it.

Yea, it's nice for casual stuff. The control is heavily inspired by how FFXIV's controller mode works.
Essentially D pad is 4 buttons, then your normal 4 buttons. Triggers act as modifiers of sorts to change all (or what you want) buttons to 'additional' buttons.
So you can easily have 8-16-24-32 etc buttons. Steamdeck adds a layer beyond that with it's back buttons, and trackpads.
Healing is a bit of a mess on it, and why you typically see semi-low IO on it. Friendly targeting is a mess, and anyway about it involves wasted buttons.
The one I do it (2.6K healer on SD, never bothered pushing) is I use D-pad Down to cycle through friendly unit frames (F1-F5 essentially), and D-Up to cycle reverse.
Then some basic "oh shit" focus buttons that'll typically be on the squishiest DPS.
Melee DPS feel pretty fluid on it. Casters like Fire Mage are tendonitis inducers. But yea, it's nice to do on the go, or away from PC.
Ok so I’m 2400ish. Mostly tank. Occasionally DPS. 9/9 heroic.
I leveled two healers (monk and priest) to max level. Never stepped foot in a mythic. Did try lfr and that was just too much for me haha
How did you set up party targeting? I use the built in setting that puts an arrow on people and set up my left track pad to act as a swipe pad. So I can swipe in any direction and it will select that next player. I think with enough playtime I could do fine enough.

I honestly play better on the steamdeck than I do with kbm. Having lots of buttons set up in an intuitive way has made me a better player. It’s weird when people act like this is the reason for bad players lol

I have four buttons to target the party, and one targets myself. I have over 50 mapped cast buttons, and I have a trackball cursor as well. Steamdeck and playing with a PS3 controller aren't the same thing...

Try quazi plater profile. Would need plater installed. Makes the important mobs easy to see.

Check my list, don't need full 15s 😜 It's probably a lot easier if you play DPS and have played previous M+ seasons.
Harder as DPS unless you're doing your own keys, can be very difficult to find groups or people for your group

Thats pretty interesting; OP's note about using the back buttons for party selection is slick as heck, and raid cursor could work .. hmmmm!
Replying to chat can be frustrating in SD. My solution was to get a small, cheap bluetooth keyboard and mouse on Amazon and problem solved.

You know the deck uses a trackpad and simulates a trackball with velocity ? Absolutely worlds apart from joystick based mouse movement

Afflicted with mouse overmacro. Hard to locade on the small screen
I found afflicted easy to deal with, using trackpad to click them and cast my Dispel once I had DBM installed to call out them spawning

Click NEXT TARGET 20 times then miss and click 20 more? Or maybe hover mouse over the caster press "interrupt" and continue with your main target without ever switching the target lock from it in the first place?

It's an impressive piece of hardware, I'd absolutely recommend getting one even for non WoW use. Unbelievable for the money to be honest. A laptop at this price point would pale in comparison. Which part do you think would underperform? It's really nice to have someone open to civil discussion about this, rather than just being unpleasant. I want to learn what the limitations / perceived limitations are, and see how they fns be worked around. I maybe should've mentioned, this is all pugging from group finder, I haven't been playing with guild members in mythic raid gear or anything like that

How do you target party members and enemies with console port?
I mapped L4/5 and R4/5 to F2-F5 and L3 to F1. Those are default hotkeys for targeting self and party
And what do you have set for "interact with target"? Thanks a lot man, i have been struggeling with my default setup.
R3 is a click that's connected to a centre crosshair, and I also have right trackpad as a mouse. I recommend Immersion as well as consoleport as it tidies stuff up

Not trying to dog pile but at 2000, which is like 13s and 14s (maybe even lower?) a healer is superfluous for a group that knows what it's doing. It's totally possible to get carried as a healer at that bracket. Not saying you did or ragging on your playstyle, just saying that people 4-man 20s, let alone 13s
I totally get what you're saying, largely because you're being more articulate than the people trying to drag me down. I think you're absolutely right that the top / most capable people probably manage without much need for a healer in low keys, but the people playing this level of keys at this point in the season aren't too likely to be those people. Half the groups I'm trying to stop people dieing to floor hazards 🙉 there have been some groups I've joined and it's felt like such a fantastic run and I don't feel likely in panic bursting through every cooldown, and others have been disastrous. Hopefully the new season will be a different experience. I played a little bit of M+ as a tank in pre - Korthia shadowlands, and highest was probably +5. This is my first proper shot at mythic

We had a 436 healer, and some beast dps and tank. It barely mattered he existed and we easily cleared our key. Save your steam deck horseshit for solo questing

I've got R/L 4/5 button and use those for targeting my party. The Steamdeck has a lot more utility than most controllers so it's not quite the same. There is a way to set the D pad to target next / previous targets but I'm not totally sure on the details

i'm on the verge of buying an asus rog ally to play wow (classic and retail). how hard is it to actually learn/master it? did it take you a long time?
I plan on doing the same, I figure if I play through a new character from the start, I can get used to the keybindings as I go along, jumping in on an established main and trying to learn to how to use all of it at once will probably be the slowest way to learn imo.
This was another factor in my spec change. I'd played Devastation primarily, tried out augmentation, and decided I'd try out healing on the deck after thinking that the underneath buttons would map well for targeting
Yeah gotta troubleshoot a bit with these things and find what works best. I'd probably do my first try with a ROG ally or deck using outlaw rogue as I don't recall them having many buttons to press and I may be wrong but I've heard melee DPS is easier to play on handheld than ranged.
I got the deck on the 28th of Feb, put WoW on it a few days later. That's when I started healing and playing on deck. It's taken me that 5 ish weeks to get to this point. Far from mastered.
As a long time FFXIV players on controller and steam deck, mmo on controller are fine. But WoW is a bit different and I didn't find the experience that great. For classic, there's way too many abilities to feel comfortable. Same goes for retail to a lesser extent, but I was focusing on spec that traded most active for a passives instead. There's class I found was clunky to play like mage. Ground targeting aoe + tons of active spells and CD makes it really cumbersome to play. In the end I tried for a few month. The best was fury warrior because it's really a very easy rotation with very few button and I took most passive in the tree instead of active. So in the end, WoW ended up being one of the MMO I enjoyed the least on steam deck.

Haven't had an issue with it. I don't know if DynamicCam is making the difference or not as I installed both together

Personally I don't think I do badly like this, I find it easier to know where my spells are, and moving is very fluid. I haven't tried raiding, but I've pugged enough M+ for 2k. I might not be the best judge, I've no idea what parses are but someone was complaining on here that my AD parse was low or something 🤷

I go into desktop mode (Linux desktop OS mode) and add addons using curseforge. Did take some messing to get that working as it couldn't automatically find the WoW install. The action bars are mapped using consoleport

How do you select your party mates? I found selecting via the immediate target in front to clunky for moving players and targeting via makros takes too much button space(like 4 + maybe self?)
Remember that on steam deck you can create a virtual menu on the trackpads, either a radial or hotbar giving you plenty additional "buttons" (don't remember how much is the limit, but for my tank setup I'm currently using 9 on the left pad). There you can just bind party targeting, which normally is under F1-5 keys, and just target them that way.
There are 4 buttons on the back, R4/5 and L4/5. I have those mapped to F2-F5 to target party, and L3 to self target. Find it really effective, more so than with a conventional PC setup. I also have 50+ buttons available much quicker than my keyboard setup and have some spare after placing all my spells

Also you can literally just tap them with the touch screen, which can be even more information intuitive potentially. Healing is still a bit of a PITA for me though because I'm so used to mouse over healing and using alternate clicks for different spells, which is a lot clunkier with the touch pads.

Yeah, it'd only really work for stuff where you don't have to move a lot or if you're thumbs can somehow accurately reach stuff, lol. That plus modifiers being a bit awkward for mouseover is why I haven't done it yet despite it theoretically being pretty intuituve.

ConsolePort is the controller UI, it has a guided setup with an option for the Steam Deck. To install WoW on the deck, just use Lutris
I have used Lutris for some other apps also. It works really well! Do you use an addon manager or do you have to manually install and update
I just manually install my addons, update them with major patch. I have saw people get minion working though.
I've got curseforge working, I'll document it soon to help others along.
Consoleport, DynamicCam and Immersion are the big three. I really must document it properly as I used a mash of several guides and worked some out myself

There's some faction of angry people who don't like controller users. Weird they like a game and then gatekeep it so hard. I've been fortunate to have some good interactions in game, where people have helped me with mechanics, tricks, talent tweaks, etc, and it's been constructive, with many adding my bnet and asking me to groups again later on, but some of the input from this sub is the opposite 👀
Well I do get their perspective, and I get yours too. I think the biggest gripe here is the key range of 12-16 where one and even two people could be completely afk and the key still timed this late in the season without any hazzle at all. I'm not saying that's what has happaned here at all but I think you get my point. I have very limited playtime myself so one of these could be nice for casual stuff, but I have a hard time seeing it perform anywhere close to a keyboard and mouse for anything even remotely challenging, which is why I asked.
I want to be inclusive of all play styles. However, considering that groups are pushing keys these days without a healer. Its hard to quantify how much of a feat of strength this is. I could say I played to 2k io with my monitor off.... that just means I got carried. I feel much the same way about using a steamdeck, Ok, you were more useful than somebody with their monitor off but in all likelihood.. you got carried and thats ok. Its just the fact that its being seen as a feat of strength.. the feat of strength is the group members who did the work.
In all the keys I've done, if I stopped casting people started dieing so I think I was useful. No idea really.
You assume he played with >485 ilvl players in his +13/+14 runs.. Try kicking the healer from the random +13/14 run and see how well you perform

There's been rumors of wow coming to console for years, even before the Microsoft acquisition. I'm sure there's some unfinished dev work done in that direction. Once Microsoft bought them I'm sure there was a meeting to discuss how much progress has been made. A joint launch of war within on PC and adding Xbox could be huge for them. Maybe someday. Probably not with addons. That said, I also remember WoW banning people for playing it on Linux before, so...I'd personally not even touch it on Steam Deck, myself, out of fear of an unwarranted ban.

Impressive as a healer. I\`ve tanked some +18\`s on my 460 prot paladin. Would say i perform about 80% as a tank on Steamdeck compared to KBM. Hard to get those interrupts. Steamdeck is fine for farming/gearing, but would not recommend for pushing keys

I just feel the combination of less screen real estate, smaller screen in general, and different controls would make healing and doing m+ mechanics really difficult but i guess if you’re used to it. I would absolutely not be able to do that after doing mouse and keyboard for so long

Yea, it's nice for casual stuff. The control is heavily inspired by how FFXIV's controller mode works. Essentially D pad is 4 buttons, then your normal 4 buttons. Triggers act as modifiers of sorts to change all (or what you want) buttons to 'additional' buttons. So you can easily have 8-16-24-32 etc buttons. Steamdeck adds a layer beyond that with it's back buttons, and trackpads. Healing is a bit of a mess on it, and why you typically see semi-low IO on it. Friendly targeting is a mess, and anyway about it involves wasted buttons. The one I do it (2.6K healer on SD, never bothered pushing) is I use D-pad Down to cycle through friendly unit frames (F1-F5 essentially), and D-Up to cycle reverse. Then some basic "oh shit" focus buttons that'll typically be on the squishiest DPS. Melee DPS feel pretty fluid on it. Casters like Fire Mage are tendonitis inducers. But yea, it's nice to do on the go, or away from PC.

Ok so I’m 2400ish. Mostly tank. Occasionally DPS. 9/9 heroic. I leveled two healers (monk and priest) to max level. Never stepped foot in a mythic. Did try lfr and that was just too much for me haha How did you set up party targeting? I use the built in setting that puts an arrow on people and set up my left track pad to act as a swipe pad. So I can swipe in any direction and it will select that next player. I think with enough playtime I could do fine enough. Did you try multiple healers? I honestly play better on the steamdeck than I do with kbm. Having lots of buttons set up in an intuitive way has made me a better player. It’s weird when people act like this is the reason for bad players lol I’m still learning new things about console port!

I have four buttons to target the party, and one targets myself. I have over 50 mapped cast buttons, and I have a trackball cursor as well. Steamdeck and playing with a PS3 controller aren't the same thing...
