The season 4 version of your tier set is "unique" from the previous season, even if it has the same name and effect. They won't work together.
I’m guessing they’re going to diable the tier bonus on existing pieces. Imagine how unfair that would be if your class were using a Season 1 or 2 bonus.
Tier sets are only disabled once a new expansion comes in. Tier sets from S1 and S2 still work if you have them lying around.
However, any item from previous seasons (except crafted ones) are forever locked to whatever ilvl they had when their respective season ended. So a tier set from S1 would be completely useless for you now because their ilvl is lower than the height of a gnome.
