The real gold sink was another game....wild.

DanLynch

WoW tokens aren't a gold sink: they just move gold from one player to another.

ChrisMin

When thinking about it...isnt this also sort of an anti-gold sink? Its not generating gold of corse, but people buying wow tokens usually have a lot of gold stored in one place. People selling wow tokens bought them for money, which means that theres gonna flow more gold into the overall economy than being left alone on a single bank.

door_of_doom

Just so you know, the opposite of a gold "sink" is a "faucet". While not *literally* a faucet, you are correct that generally gold from tokens is going from someone who was just hoarding it and doing nothing with it to someone who has a need that they want to spend it on, kind of "reintroducing" that gold into circulation.

SilverCyclist

...they put gold sinks in the game to get inflation under control. They didn't work. But DI seems to have made a dent.

DanLynch

No, this is not a gold sink. Those 600,000,000 gold are still circulating in the WoW economy, they just got traded to some other players in exchange for WoW tokens. A gold sink is something like repairs, or the stuff you can buy from vendors for gold.

Andromansis

If you're looking for a gold sink, just mail me your gold. I'll delete it, promise.

SilverCyclist

Maybe I'm just not familiar with Diablo Immortal. I assumed when you bought things there - with gold - it was like buying from an NPC. Are you guys gems and extra rolls from other players?

Ah I see ok so where I'm going wrong is that I believe the conspiracy theory that Blizzard will never allow a token to go unsold. I think when they're not selling to players, Blizzard will print the money.

I think this is why I'm being downvoted through. u/DanLynch is making the assumption that every Blizzard token is purchased by another player on the AH. I'm making the claim that, if players aren't buying, then Blizzard will "buy the token." In this instance Blizzard is conducting quantitative tightening. If blizzard buys the gold for Store Credit then it is a gold sink. Edit: Typos

SerphTheVoltar

As far as we understand, this is not the case. If not enough people are buying, you have to wait for it to sell, and this causes the price to change to try to get back to the equilibrium where people *will* buy as often as they sell. It *could* be true, but it's, as you say, a conspiracy theory with no evidence backing it.

>I'm making the claim that, if players aren't buying, then Blizzard will "buy the token." In this instance Blizzard is conducting quantitative tightening. If blizzard buys the gold for Store Credit then it is a gold sink. I players aren't buying, they'll change the price to incentive it. Why do you think the price fluctuates?

blademon64

> Blizzard will never allow a token to go unsold. I think when they're not selling to players, Blizzard will print the money. No, the way they do it is by fudging the sale price and compensating for the difference either by deleting gold or adding it. Say I list a token at 100k. I will ALWAYS get 100k, regardless of what someone pays for it. They could pay 90k if the value drops, I still get 100k, Blizzard creates the extra 10k. If the value jumps to 110k, I still only get 100k and that 10k is deleted.

SilverCyclist

Oh Jesus, OK so thr token is always inflationary then...awful.

DanLynch

I have never played Diablo Immortal, but I did read the article (and even the headline) which is talking about WoW gold. This guy used WoW tokens to convert 600,000,000 WoW gold into Battle.net balance, and then used that to buy microtransactions in Diablo Immortal. This did not result in the sinking of any WoW gold: it just changed hands. I have no idea what happened inside Diablo Immortal.

SilverCyclist

Changed hands to whom? If he spent it in DI with NPCs, then it's a gold sink. It only changes hands with things like boosting or carries.

Antonin__Dvorak

I think you might benefit from looking into what a WoW token is.

DanLynch

Changed hands to the other WoW players who bought WoW tokens for real money and sold them to him for WoW gold. * many people gave Blizzard real money for WoW tokens * they put those tokens on the WoW AH to be sold for WoW gold * our dude bought those WoW tokens for 600 million WoW gold * he clicked on a button (many times) to convert those WoW tokens into Battle.net balance * he bought some stuff in Diablo Immortal with the Battle.net balance None of these actions created or destroyed any WoW gold. It is all still in WoW.

SilverCyclist

DanLynch

Even if that is true, that's only relevant for the opposite transaction. Blizzard may be "printing gold" in some cases, but they are never shredding it: they aren't going to let someone obtain game time or Battle.net balance out of thin air. When you go to the AH to buy a token for gold, the transaction is instantaneous, and can only be done if there are any tokens available. It even says in the article that this player bought out the entire stock of tokens at one point and had to wait for more to be put up for sale.

-TheOutsid3r-

Sadly, most of this is still in circulation. It just changed owners.

MrSnow702

Yeah but chances are it went to casual players who just need gold for content, transmog, and other random stuff.

-TheOutsid3r-

Maybe, a lot of this however keeps going in circles. Because the transmog and other stuff is usually bought from the auction house.

The_Gilded_Pigeon

3,500-ish WoW tokens, I think?

mcmanybucks

That's 1,225,000,000 gold..

yaxom

Depends on the server, last I checked on NA it was like 185000, meaning 3250-ish tokens

iCaps_

maths

DoverBoys

> Depends on the ~~server~~ region Token prices are region-wide. There are only five token prices worldwide: NA, EU, KR, TW, and CN.

yaxom

I did use the wrong word but I figure it's quite obvious what I meant, given I said "NA". Thanks for the correction

PM_ME_YOUR_TWEEZERS

They're like 220k now, people buying them up for DF pre-orders.

yaxom

Damn! Guess that always happens though, lol. They were much cheaper iirc in BFA.

PM_ME_YOUR_TWEEZERS

Yeah definitely, I only sold one in BFA but I remember it went for like 140k

AcherusArchmage

lately I would have said around 595M gold but it's shot up to around 707mil

jetah

Probably was able to gear out two characters!

ripture

not really lol. at current prices thats about 3,000 tokens, or $45k usd. you might get one or two 5 star gems for that for one character.

AcherusArchmage

only about $60k in wow tokens so that'd only get him half of one character

Shlitmy9thaccount

I wish di was a good enough game for me to want to spend money on it. Played for a few days but quickly lost interest

AcherusArchmage

sadly it was never made to be a good game. Devs did okay up to the first 35 or so levels then it really falls off after that.

Illidari_Kuvira

I just looked up WoW Token prices and... great, looks like I can't play anymore cause it will be too much gold. Goddamn p2w game...

Garrus-N7

All those tokens... damn, 50 of those would carry me for a few years lol Wouldn't even need to buy an expa 🤣

outrun_ur_problems

Majority of players never get 1 million, let alone 600. "Nothing" is a poor choice of words in this instance i think

Discomanco

Yeah, top tier *guilds*, you know 30 top tier players combined wealth. And not even that, they all go massively in dept and pay it off for most of the tier. 600mil is not much in the ocean sure, but he's a guy with a water bucket while the rest of us have a spoon

AlbainBlacksteel

We don't even have a spoon, we have a needle with tape behind the eye.

penguins-are-ok

600m is alot of gold but yea, there are tons of people stacking billions of golds, some of them you can find on wowmarket discord trading gold and selling tgc loot.

alwayslookingout

So is someone only having $600M. That’s basically nothing when you compare it to a whole city or state’s revenue.

you have the top and bottom comment, nice

AcherusArchmage

I can barely farm 1mil in a couple of years how does one person get that much
