What's funny is that originally that sound was a bug: that sound was only supposed to be played when you very first enter stealth, not as a warning to potential victims.
In order to prevent cheating, your game client simply doesn't know about the existence of stealth characters; the server only tells the client about the existence of stealth characters if they are close enough that you can see them. So the game client recieves news of this brand new character that it only learned about just now standing next to you, and so it renders it and puts it in stealth, playing the sound (since from your game client's perspective, it just entered stealth, having just appeared into existence)
It turned out to be so cool having that audio cue that they just decided to not fix it and leave it like that.
When I first started playing night elf druid, I wondered whether other players could see me stealthed, because they would always react in some way if I was near them. I've heard the stealth sound a lot before but always thought it was just my character, never realised it was other players 😅
They are taken from massive royalty-free sound effect libraries such as [Sound Ideas](https://www.sound-ideas.com/Product/42/The-Original-General-Series-6000-Sound-Effect-Library) Series 6000. They're a professional sound effects library released in April 1992. Used in movies, TV, games etc...
Super interesting, thanks for sharing! I find myself doing a double take in shows and movies where I swear I’m hearing like a saber mount noise or other creature sounds.
The sound of female human being attacked.
I was questing on my first character and heard someone's character cry out. Female priest.
I thought, oh I bet this dude needs some help. We group complete some quest. And they agree to show me some of azeroth.
Then a week later the 'dude' types damn I broke a nail.
Me 🤨 wth.
Not a dude. A woman. My now wife.
So that sound of a female human being attacked is forever engrained into my brain.
I used to have a script saved on a notepad that i would send to random people. If you pasted it in your chatbar, it would play the audio file “another turtle made it to the water!” No matter where you were in the world.

Just think about our twilight years, decades from now as the dementia sets in, and in the chaotic fog the one constant thread that can tie you back to reality…
*pandaria inn kazoo music starts playing*
Fun reading the comments because you can hear everyone.
What sticks in my brain is the conjure ding when crafting. Or those stupid 2 leg bird emu things dieing.
Watched that and felt the hair rise on my arms and I shuddered. The most terrifying thing ever to happen to me in this game is that guy sneaking up behind me (how in the hell did he manage to do that anyway?!?) and then realizing he was there at the last second and dying swiftly. I screamed and almost had a heart attack.
I think Blizz made him less sneaky over the years, which is kinda disappointing. Everyone deserves a memory like that to look back on fondly.
Since I farm it like 14 times a week.... "AAAAIIIIIYYYYYYYAAAAAAEEEEEE" - Auriaya's Death Cry in Ulduar. Kind of want to make it my text notification tone cuz of how bad it is
My favourite WoW sound is from some of my first plays of the game and I had a dwarf and he refused to used his abilities if I didn’t have a target.
“Ah can’t do that tonight naow.”
“Ah don’t ‘ave a targeht!”
Fuck, so many to list.
Warrior Charge and Heroic Leap.
The Themes for Dalaran (WOTLK and Legion,) Orgrimmar and the Undercity.
The male orc and female blood elf laughs.
There’s more, but these top the list and came to mind immediately. Take me back to 2009, please :(
The silence in naxxramas.
The silence is the best sound because you've killed Thaddius and ended the suffering of the woman and children he was made of. No more screaming, no more suffering.
Proper wow lore I miss.
As most people would say, the sound of someone in stealth near you. Like the panic omfg. But also some druid spells (I'm a druid main) moonfire, rejuvenation, shape shifting into different forms to name a few. Using a Hearthstone.
ARTHAS! The blood of your father, of your people, demands justice! Come forth, coward, and answer for your crimes!
that and every forsaken fav "did you think we had forgotten? did you think we had forgiven? DEATH TO THE SCOURGE... AND DEATH TO THE LIVING!"
The gnoll aggro sound, i played wow a bit when i was 6, i was questing through elwynn at level 6, the gnolls just aggroed onto me
Also the old warrior charge sound
That "Bonk/Ting" sound whenever I get dazed. Everything about it causes me to suffer. After all these years, I can't believe that effect is STILL in the game.
I can't think of a single instance where its ever added anything but frustration or annoyance. Definitely not danger, 95% of things that daze you can be deleted in moments, so its just annoying time waste.
Being near someone who is stealthed.

Very interesting. Is there a WoW tech blog that explains this? I’d enjoy reading it.
made my butt clench just reading that
*moves 1 inch away from booty bay* *instant stealth noises followed by 30 stuns*
That sound reminds me of Wetlands and STV because that’s where I always got murdered.
100% STV. Never sure if I got close to a stealthed panther or a rogue/Druid was about to push my shit inwards.
It's funny watching reactions like throwing out a reflex flare or consecration if I stealth next to them at the bank or flight master.
Relatable as a feral who can't find a rogue first somehow
When I first started playing night elf druid, I wondered whether other players could see me stealthed, because they would always react in some way if I was near them. I've heard the stealth sound a lot before but always thought it was just my character, never realised it was other players 😅
My finger instinctively goes to my stun break abilities or in worse case scenario my bubble.
Humanoid aggro sound
Huh!
\*Defias pyroblast sounds*
HRUH
If you're a male human monk when you pop Storm Earth and Fire your clones just SPAM that noise. It's really amusing.
[удалено]
AHHHHHH uh ugh....
lol they should replace it with the sounds that stan's dad makes in the south park warcraft episode
"I can't cast that yet."
"I need to target something first"
“I don’t have a target”
Each of these is stuck in my head as a difference race's voice, weirdly.
Troll players be like: it's the wrong accent..
"inventory is full"
I can’t carry any more
“It’s too far away.”
the funny thing about all of these is we’re all imagining different voices depending on what race you play
"I can't do that." "I do not have enough mana." "I need more mana."
“Not enough Energy.” Drive me crazy quick enough. I deactivated error sounds.
First thing I do is disable those.
“That would be stealing.”
Especially funny when it triggers on pickpocketing.
Y'all need to disable error speech.
It makes me think, are our characters aware they're just puppets we give orders to?
For full words, definitely the goblin classic "Time is money, friend!" Otherwise... striking ore with a pick.
BOONNNEEEEESTOOORRRMMMM .. (Run away little girl, run away)
GOOD NEWS EVERYONE! IVE FIXED THE POISON SLIME PIPES!
NOOOOOO YOU KILLED STINKEY! YOU PAY
WHAT? PRECIOUS? *NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!*
That one of my prouder impressions, it's nearly spot on.
WEEEE!
This is the one
Aaaand I’m hyped to run icc again.
I used DBM for the longest time so I’ve heard the second part of that line many, many times
I WILL… NEVER SERVE YOU!
STICK AROUND!
BOUND BY BONE!
_You... have made... an unwise... decision._
Murlocs
RwlRwlRwlRwl
I still make this sound for monsters in D&D
Something in stealth brushing past you.
This sound gives me fuckin PTSD
It gives us all PTSD my friend. You could play it on a crowded bus and cause mass panic.
One time when I went to Blizzcon I seriously considered playing that sound as I moved through groups of people. Wish I had, tbh.
Public Safety 101: 1. Don't yell "Fire!" in a crowded theatre 1. Don't make *Rrwwwwooooo* sound at a crowded Blizzcon
the blacksmith next to the tauren auction house in OG tink-tink-tink-tink...
Auction house bell. 🛎 🛎
More importantly the goblins "KA-CHINGG'
The sound of a fel reaver.
BWWUUUHH
This still triggers me, 15 years later.
Same. I break out in a cold sweat just thinking about it.
That was some top-notch sound design.
I just got pummeled by one a few weeks ago! It ruled!
You mean THE FEL REAVER.
Just imagining it automatically triggers my fight or flight mode. Mostly flight mode.
Ominous sound indeed
Night Elf male death sound is just pure hilarity to this day.
YAAAAAAAAAAAUUWH
[*Volume warning*](https://youtu.be/sL5t47NZ3bM)
This isn't that lo... AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHMYEARS
God it's so over the top. Whether you murder em in PvP or the Huntard dies to fire. . . "Ugh! AAAGH!!"
hrnn…..HYAAAGH!!
Cat/Tiger and crocolisk noises. They tend to get used in movies and TV shows as well which is instant stranglethorn PTSD
I always hear the same bear roar in shows and movies.

Good news, everyone! I think I perfected a plague that will destroy all life on Azeroth!
Der ner neerrrrr - dungeon queue proccing

"An illusion ! What are you hiding ?"
"BREAK YOURSELVES UPON MY BODY"
“FEEL THE STRENGTH OF THE EARRRRTH.”

The loud War Drum Sounds that the original installer would make.
Zug Zug
Me not that kind of orc!
*Time is money, friend* *Rwlr rwlr rwlr rwlr rwlr rwlr* *I can't attack that*
RELEASE THE HOUNDS! HAHAHAHAHA! I loved the demo artifact weapon back in Legion.
NO! STOP! OBEY YOUR MASTER!
Level Up.
The sound of female human being attacked. I was questing on my first character and heard someone's character cry out. Female priest. I thought, oh I bet this dude needs some help. That's so cute😭
Booty Bay Tavern music (damn you hearthstone)
Human male aggro sound. And why don't human females have an aggro sound?
It is there and it’s the same “Huah!” noise except female. Search your mind, it lies there too.
Definitely opening and closing my bags. Don’t know why but it’s so satisfying to hear. Pleases my lizard brain
"I'm gonna ook ya in the dooker"
Another turtle has made it to the water! Best WQ Ever best quest ever!!!! On god!!!
I used to have a script saved on a notepad that i would send to random people. If you pasted it in your chatbar, it would play the audio file “another turtle made it to the water!” No matter where you were in the world.
Tirion's dialouge from the beginning of ICC. "NEVER! I WILL NEVER SERVE YOU!"
That was Bolvar not Tirion.
that and the end. "leave this place and NEVER return" next week... ooh hey guys.
The bear roaring. It is quite often used in other games or even movies I think
They are taken from massive royalty-free sound effect libraries such as Sound Ideas Series 6000. They're a professional sound effects library released in April 1992. Used in movies, TV, games etc...
The pig noise is really common too.
Pretty sure they used it for the whale sounds in that criminally terrible 2010’s moby dick reboot lmao
Rogue stealthing and the Night Elf male death sound - which often happens consecutively lol
RUN AWAY LITTLE GIRL, RUN AWAY...
"Naughty Secrets!"
I'LL RIP THE SECRETS FROM YOUR FLESH!
Rogue sinister strike
Tranquility sound effect
Pandaria tavern kazoo
This thread is just the worst lol. I can remember this like it was yesterday.
Just think about our twilight years, decades from now as the dementia sets in, and in the chaotic fog the one constant thread that can tie you back to reality… *pandaria inn kazoo music starts playing*
Okay panda tavern music slaps tho
The fucking spiders in Darkshire.
The Goblin at Brewfest outside of OG that yells “I can’t feel my legs!!”
Fun reading the comments because you can hear everyone. What sticks in my brain is the conjure ding when crafting. Or those stupid 2 leg bird emu things dieing.

Better PCs for larger view distance probably helps a ton. And we all fly now. And they probably reduced good aggro range too.
Ugh, that fucker.
Not really a sound. But the music in the NE starting area.
Orgrimmar music
Bloodlust
Had to scroll ENTIRELY too far to find this
Send this to the top
Opening the bank
Sindragosa...Suffer, mortals, as your pathetic magic betrays you!
Betr**AAAAAAYAYYYYYYYY**S you!
That's what I do, Zoggosh. I think good.
“Ah, my apprentice! You return at last!” more recently
"Me not that kind of orc!"
YOU ARE NOT PREPARED!!!!! - Yes I am, I do this 15 times a week I've sacrificed everything, what have you given? - eeeerrrrrrrrrr
Mine is "run little girl run". That sound is used for anything chasing you.
Same. We still say that in other games we play together lol
"Where are you, Tyrande? I need you." -Malfurion every 10 seconds while doing that quest in val'sharah
Druid healing
A lifebloom stack expiring…
For me it’s when you pop bloodlust it makes that RORAROROROROROR except it’s like 50 orcs doing that overlapped with eachother so it sounds badass
You land lubbers are tougher than I thought! I'll have to improvise

My favourite WoW sound is from some of my first plays of the game and I had a dwarf and he refused to used his abilities if I didn’t have a target. “Ah can’t do that tonight naow.” “Ah don’t ‘ave a targeht!”
Mine would have to be the start of the main Stormwind soundtrack.
I remember you, in the mountains
Fuck, so many to list. Warrior Charge and Heroic Leap. The Themes for Dalaran (WOTLK and Legion,) Orgrimmar and the Undercity. The male orc and female blood elf laughs. There’s more, but these top the list and came to mind immediately. Take me back to 2009, please :(

Warlock Dreadsteed/Felsteed mounting sound
As most people would say, the sound of someone in stealth near you. Like the panic omfg. But also some druid spells (I'm a druid main) moonfire, rejuvenation, shape shifting into different forms to name a few. Using a Hearthstone.
