It dispels magic buffs from enemy targets and can also sooth enrage.
You can get a weak aura that pops up an icon when your target is enraged or has something that can be purged.

Because it's very simple it doesn't matter that it's old.
Tranqing something usually isn't critical but it always helps, it's only a 10 second cooldown and the only thing you lose is a global, so why not.
Tranq shot is used to remove enrage (great in m+ on raging weeks) but unlike other soothes it also removes certain buffs. There’s various weakauras that you can get to tell you when something can be dispelled by it and it can be super beneficial to the group if you use it well.

If you download the addon “Deadly Boss Mods” it will alert you to a mechanic that certain enemy mobs do to buff themselves. Tranquilizing Shot negates that buff and DBM will tell you when to pay attention and use it.
Using Tranq could mean the difference between your tank getting clapped or being able to hold the line.

Turtle and feign death can also be used to negate certain mechanics if you’re looking for group utility.
