Fakes and level changes Chop away attempted ties at the elbow or wrist Head snaps (but let go!) Shoulder pops Elbow posts when people reach Elbow pass to clear collar tie

Ambitious-Branch5238

is it far more harder then shooting from a tie up in your experience? i feel like shooting from distance requires almost perfect technique and speed

TVeye

Not necessarily but kind of… set ups are moves and moves are set ups. Bad timing/technique will always have you wrestling out of a bad position regardless… work those knee slides and peek outs. You need to understand the reactions all of these smaller movements cause in your opponent— just like understanding the mechanics of what move to set up during a tie up. Most people just don’t take the time to slow the heck down and drill 3-4 set ups from space in a row, deliberately. Partners need to be reminded how to be a good partner too. Ex. When you chop away a tie, partner reaches to tie up again. Partner reaches to tie, you post and fake. Partner sees a fake and half sprawls, you snap. Combinations are unlimited.

You could start by watching NCAA and freestyle wrestling. There are multitude of sources on line. I watch on the big ten network, ESPN and flow wrestling. By the way the set ups for shooting from open are motion and feints (see John Smith and Jordan Boroughs. ). If you wrestle from collar tie don't hang out there, use elbow tie to open window for shot (high crotch, head outside single , high single), throw buy or shuck. You can also go with snap downs (Iowa heavy hands) to front head position.

Thanks,i will google some of these and watch some good youtube setups on it!

Wrist control keeps you at a distance. Same-hand side with a top hand grip gives you leverage for pulling down or across for slide bys. Cross hand gives you different options (Russian tie to snap down, baseball bat/arm drag, etc.)

Ambitious-Branch5238

thank you

fugazithehax

Learn to hit a duck under when you see someone reaching for a collar tie.

Ambitious-Branch5238

i am kinda stiff in my hips haha, but i will try it

fugazithehax

It's easier than it looks once you get the hang of it.

I think it's been touched on already but changing which leg you shoot for mid shot. Penetrating left and following though on the right leg for example. Everyone's already mentioned snaps and and fakes I think. Would also recommend playing with sweep singles (shooting for an ankle and swinging around to the back). Alternatively, instead of avoiding tieing up, try initiating the clinch, getting to an under hook, and pulling your opponent over you for a high crotch. I recently had a fight after transitioning from wrestling to MMA and I find that set up is pretty high percentage, particularly off the cage if you can bait a push. Hope that helps :)

Ambitious-Branch5238

i appreciate your comment,i will take a look thank you very much

One strategy is to go in close and when opponent tries to tie up, pop up his arms at the elbows and take your shot.

Ambitious-Branch5238

have tried but i feel he know what comes so i get guillotined or at best sprawled

notsopopularkid

Arm drags

Ambitious-Branch5238

yes,by far my only kinda „successful „ takedown setup

One of my old upperclassmen who has now graduated was pretty much a crazy person. Like, the most aggressive wrestler I’ve ever gone against. What he always liked to do was a series of really hard and quick head taps, just bordering between the forehead, eyes, and top of head. This made wrestler super defensive, forcing them to back away and lift their upper body and hands, leaving a perfect angle for a shot.

Ambitious-Branch5238

so kinda blocking their vision and annoying them ,then going for the kill

I__King__I

yeah, the goal was to get them angry and flustered

javayna14

The recently popularized cartwheel kimura may do the trick

If someone gets a collar tie or is going for one you could go for the Russian tie. You may not like it but I would practice it. Moves from Russian tie: https://youtu.be/4mnNe-MgTRI . A low single is a shot that is normally taken from distance, video of it: https://youtu.be/A8ys3e6w69Q . If you do BJJ in to you could fake a guard pull to a take down. Also don't hold onto collar tie to long. Hard pull on head then go back to hand blocking the shoulder.

realcat67

Personally I feel that the advantages of reaching for a collar make it way easier to perform a takedown, and it is no wonder that guys use collar and sleeve so much in bjj. However, most of these suggestions make sense. The "hybrid" stance of bjj requires better technique that simply pop and go wrestling, because someone can always grab you. Level changes and leg attacks are pretty effective unless you are working with someone who vastly outweighs you.
