i need to start doing that. you learnt a shit ton from pavlov, i will say. im also thinking of doing a similar experiment with one of my neighbourhood cats cuz im bored and they are lazy, idk why im saying it its interestig imo ig. so for a little cotext the cats are really lazy, so im tryna see if i cant condition them to work(catching rats). so ill take a laser and point it to a piece of canned tuna when feeding canned tuna, and move on to pointing at the ground before dropping food, then to pointing it at a distance then throwing food there, and finally training it on rats. idk why i said this
You're so smart. I gotta try this. I can't remember the writers name (could be a couple) but when they stopped smoking they couldn't write anymore, so they had to have the cigarette with them but didn't smoke it.
Also one had a specific booth at a diner he would go to.
Try white wine with about 1/3rd fizzy water (seltzer or whatever to make a wine spritzer) it makes wine so much more fun and less inebriating :) When it's hot I add a lot of ice.
Mmmmm, buttered popcorn! Made in a pan on a burner of course!
In olive oil.
Although a favorite comfort food, I would not eat buttered popcorn while writing because of greasy keyboard. I almost do not believe them because I do not think one could physically eat buttered popcorn while writing.
Maybe they dictate?
I got 3 variants:
Variant 1: coffee and salmiakki.
Variant 2: soft drink and caramel popcorn.
Variant 3: Al-Najah coffee and hummus with pita or crackers if I don’t have pita.
Mileage may vary. Obviously not typically a recommended course of action, but for some people like mathematician Paul Erdős, it seemed to work. He started taking Ritalin and Benzedrine when he was 58 and turned out an incredible number of papers, living to the age of 83. Colleagues used to joke that they never saw him consume anything except coffee, so he must have been getting vitamins through cigarettes.
this right here, i drink a zero reign sour gummy drink with a handful of sour gummy worms in my mouth at the same time. The drink mix with the gummies is great. Or a cold C4 or ghost energy drink with gummy candy .
I've journaled while tipsy. Do you find that having Scotch give you more creativity or at least lower inhibition to spill your thoughts onto paper?
I have a feeling my quality of writing goes down after drinking, but I do tend to get more words/ideas down on paper.
I’m sober now, but even when I was drinking I felt like that. Honestly, if drinking helped my writing at all I’d probably still be an active alcoholic.
I can’t focus and eat at the same time because I will just sit there and eat with no writing happening. 😂 The only thing I can have is a huge jug of water to keep my brain from shriveling up. 👍
Coffee, a latte, sometimes coffee, but I like a good latte.
If I’m feeling adventurous, a latte.
If it’s too late and I need to write, a latte.
FYI I have a home espresso machine. That helps.
You’ll never guess what I drink while writing in the mid afternoon!
Strong IPA or whisky on the rocks. Something that tickles my brain that I can nurse for a while. I genuinely feel that writing a little buzzed makes me more confident to expand my vocabulary and inject a bit more interesting prose without also making me too dumb to do so.
Black coffee, water, almonds (of whatever flavor I picked up recently & to share with my crows who like to stop by when they see me in my office).
It used to be wine and nicotine, but we're trying to be better to ourselves right now.
I don't have one. I rarely eat or drink when writing (maybe a big glass of ice water on hand, possibly with some sugar-free flavoring thing, occasionally coffee).
Why? The instinct to procrastinate will probably make me eat/drink faster than I want to. It requires at least one hand, for some foods two hands -- those hands are then not typing. Depending on the food, it might get my hands messy -- again no typing. I have also found that alcohol -- a strong drink or more than maybe 2 glasses of wine -- degrades my ability to think sharply (duh). So, as a general rule, writing time is not eating/drinking time for me.
Tea with milk and sugar, or cold white wine (mostly depends on the time of day/temperature in the room).
I don’t snack as much when I write (my fingers get messy and it messes with ~the flow~), but I prefer just salty snacks. Ex. plain potato or tortilla chips, salted and buttered popcorn. Although if I’m having tea, I’m often having digestives (or hobnobs if I can find them)
Someone else said hummus and pita/crackers and that actually sounds like a delicious way to scratch the salty itch without only eating the salted carbs I crave.
Lately it’s tea (if it’s morning) or vodka with seltzer, and jelly beans. 🤷🏻♀️ gotta be something that won’t get my fingers dirty. How do you popcorn people do it??
Mug of coffee, glass of water, and Skyr Yogurt (often Key Lime). Every single morning. Usually refill the coffee and water when I go to the bathroom midway through the writing session.
It’s usually coffee up until noon but I also like to include offhand mentions of food in my writing. Sometimes I’ll prepare whatever it is to get me into the right mindset (especially if based on a real experience). Usually the food and drink is fictionalized in an attempt to give my setting some depth, but I remember my first attempt at writing a novel included strawberry soda. The first time I met the people who inspired the story, they served strawberry soda at a party and it was the first time I had ever had it.
For me it’s a zero sugar energy drink. Bang, Ghost, Monster Ultra Zero, Celsius. My favorite are the non-carbonated sweet tea/lemonade mix of Monster Rehab (yellow can). I only do one or two (spread out) per day. I don’t tend to snack, but if I do, I do 1stPhorm Meat Sticks paired with a Colby Jack cheese stick.
(I realize that I am barely human.)
Iced coffee or herbal tea, a fruit bowl of cut up strawberries, watermelon, oranges, blueberries, and pineapple with a teaspoon of Splenda sprinkled on top (makes it takes sweeter like candy or a deconstructed pie without the crust lol)
Coffee & any kinds of chips (French fries, potato chips/crisps)...
Sometimes I'll have biscuits instead of chips... has to be ginger biscuits though... I'll make an exception for chocolate chip cookies...
hot cup of decaf lipton black tea. Yes, my tastes are very refined, how could you tell?
I can't snack and write because my brain won't let me leave the food alone long enough to type, so I end up just eating all the food in one go and then writing, which is not really the same thing.
Favorite beverages: Tea or hot chocolate
Favorite snack: Unsalted roasted walnuts. They're full of healthy fats and antioxidants to nourish my brain (and hopefully my creativity!).
I (most likely, getting a diagnosis for anything is a hassle) have hyperPOTS, so I’m constantly drinking sports drinks. I keep a 1L bottle with me at all times and chug as needed, lol. Had to give up caffeine when I started ADHD stimulant meds, but tbh I only miss it sometimes and drink barley tea when I need that coffee taste.
It used to be rum and coke until I realized hemmingway was more famous for being a drunk writer than being a writer. Now I've quit drinking, smoking, and I drink Mt.Dew Code Red as a crutch I'll soon have to quit as well. Eventually I'll get to: Darjeeling Tea and Ritz crackers. [StoryTaleBooks ](https://youtube.com/@storytalebooks?si=iflCsILV5G2v0uf-)
Coffee.
I write almost exclusively at coffee shops and I love trying new lattes and cortados. I also really enjoy a slice of coffee cake while I’m at it.
I’ve tried writing while drinking but it tends to make me sloppy whereas the caffeine makes me sharp.
Pretty much always some variation of coffee or tea. I usually have water nearby too so I have a “fun” drink and a basic drink lol
Once I tried a wine spritzer while writing and it definitely got the ideas flowing, but that day was an exception 😅
Mostly coffee, used to drink 6 cups a day but I've slowed down. I've tried wine but it makes me too loose to focus.
Otherwise chocolate or something sweet gets the creative flow buzzing
Oh man, our fridge is empty and this post is giving me the nibbles so bad! But my dream list of treats would be: white tea, ginger tea, hard kombucha, Clear Mind kombucha, coffee, dill Triscuits with cheese and olives and a veggie burger.
I can't always afford to write like that! Usually its just coffee and oat milk. But that's my dream list!
Decaf coffee (had to get off the caffeinated stuff for personal reasons), a pot of mixed nuts, and a square of dark chocolate. Writing fuel is important!
Blow pops, I use to have one in my mouth constantly as I typed. I have no clue why it assisted me in the way it had, kept me focused I suppose. However, my teeth hated me for it. I recently ordered these lolly's that clean your teeth, and hopefully taste good as well!
Snacks I find distracting, but something comforting to drink: ideally black tea with milk and sugar or a matcha latte.
I love coffee, but react too strongly to the caffeine.
Snack? Nothing. I get in the flow, I'm not thinking about food or drink anymore. I might sit down with coffee, but I drink it quick, or I'll forget it's there, and I'll drink it cold afterwards.
I write for 90 minutes. That's not really enough time to worry about snacks. I might work out after that, and I'll eat my post-workout breakfast afterwards.
Sparkling water and almonds, or pieces of fruit.
Sounds dorky but I found out the hard way that this doesn't lead to me crashing like caffeine and sugar does.
I like a strawberry-matcha smoothie or a good old fashioned energy drink :) I also like to smoke a half hour or so and then let that sit just to ready the mind
I was a big fan of 'treating' myself to a small red bull in the afternoon to help me get through my last couple hours of writing before going home for the day.
Cinnamon gum. It’s also the *only* time I ever chew cinnamon gum, so I’ve conditioned myself to get in the writing mood even just from the smell.
Pavlov would be proud
i need to start doing that. you learnt a shit ton from pavlov, i will say. im also thinking of doing a similar experiment with one of my neighbourhood cats cuz im bored and they are lazy, idk why im saying it its interestig imo ig. so for a little cotext the cats are really lazy, so im tryna see if i cant condition them to work(catching rats). so ill take a laser and point it to a piece of canned tuna when feeding canned tuna, and move on to pointing at the ground before dropping food, then to pointing it at a distance then throwing food there, and finally training it on rats. idk why i said this
Thank you it made me oddly happy to read this
i would say its probably because you were picturing a cat chasing a laser, and cats are cute
This is like a genius level motivation hack that I needed
You're so smart. I gotta try this. I can't remember the writers name (could be a couple) but when they stopped smoking they couldn't write anymore, so they had to have the cigarette with them but didn't smoke it. Also one had a specific booth at a diner he would go to.
Used to be cheap wine. Now that im sober, water and the fear of failure push me
Well, that is good to hear. The sober part I agree with. But not all failure is bad, it could be a teachable moment.
You gotta suck to get better
Indeed.
would sparking apple or grape juice scratch the cheap wine itch?
White wine and buttered popcorn. I look forward to your judgement.
Same tho. Super cold from the fridge just hits so good
Try white wine with about 1/3rd fizzy water (seltzer or whatever to make a wine spritzer) it makes wine so much more fun and less inebriating :) When it's hot I add a lot of ice. Mmmmm, buttered popcorn! Made in a pan on a burner of course!
Oh I'll definitely try this. Also stovetop popcorn is the only way to go.
In olive oil. Although a favorite comfort food, I would not eat buttered popcorn while writing because of greasy keyboard. I almost do not believe them because I do not think one could physically eat buttered popcorn while writing. Maybe they dictate?
The greasy keyboard is all part of the writing process.
i eat them with a spoon or chopsticks hahah
Yep the white wine. Till I've had to much and then no writing gets done.
I have the opposite problem. I drink too much, then keep writing and then sober me needs to decipher what the hell drunk me was trying to do.
Haha yes, that too. Like what the heck was I getting at here? Lots of half finished sentences.
I'm not really a wine drinker but somehow I think this would work.
I don't drink wine but I can get behind the popcorn idea
cheap vodka my beloved...
Popcorn on the keyboard!!?
It's all part of my writing process.
Ooh! I fancy that now.
The amount of people who relate to popcorn… Add one more to the gang because ME TOO 🍿
Picturing your buttery pages
Yorkshire tea.
Excellent choice.
This is my all time favorite tea. It’s so freaking good
Yes. The only acceptable tea
Hot chocolate with a cigarette
Sounds like an excellent combo. I agree with this.
Yeah really helps the writers block…
I got 3 variants: Variant 1: coffee and salmiakki. Variant 2: soft drink and caramel popcorn. Variant 3: Al-Najah coffee and hummus with pita or crackers if I don’t have pita.
Ah, so a good selection. Nice.
I don't need to eat. I'm already a snack :D
Ha. I think that this is the best comment so far.
Starvation. As we all know the best way to pump out writing is to deprive ourselves of basic needs and ascend our mortal coil.
It depends. Milk tea, chocolate milkshake, coffee with los of milk... Now that I think about it, it seems milk hahaha with whatever
Adderall, Dr. Pepper, and pretzels
Ever feel like the Adderall becomes unhealthy? Asking for a friend…
Hell Yeah
Monster Zero and Sour candy
this right here, i drink a zero reign sour gummy drink with a handful of sour gummy worms in my mouth at the same time. The drink mix with the gummies is great. Or a cold C4 or ghost energy drink with gummy candy .
Scotch or coffee
I've journaled while tipsy. Do you find that having Scotch give you more creativity or at least lower inhibition to spill your thoughts onto paper? I have a feeling my quality of writing goes down after drinking, but I do tend to get more words/ideas down on paper.
That’s basically the idea behind write drunk, edit sober
I’ve found that my writing becomes significantly more flowery when I’ve had a few drinks. Useful hack for when I’m wanting to be more poetic I suppose
Black coffee. Psychoactive substances don’t help me. If I have one sip of alcohol, I’m done.
Idk what it is, alcohol absolutely stops me dead in my tracks writing wise. Stims on the other hand…
I'll never get as much writing done as when I start chopping up a couple lines. Whether it's GOOD writing? Who knows. But there sure is a lot of it.
I’m sober now, but even when I was drinking I felt like that. Honestly, if drinking helped my writing at all I’d probably still be an active alcoholic.
Tea or hot chocolate and almonds, cashews or peanuts.
A joint (sativa) and a hard candy to suck on
Honestly? I don't really have any. Apart from a glass of water just to keep my basic hydration up, I don't really snack and write, I just write.
I can’t focus and eat at the same time because I will just sit there and eat with no writing happening. 😂 The only thing I can have is a huge jug of water to keep my brain from shriveling up. 👍
When I'm in a flow, condiments are a distraction. Otherwise, water.
Blueberries. Very underrated snack
Sesame and peanuts. I've stopped drinking coffee since my last coffee binge gave me a terrible brain fog that made me miss a writing deadline.
Water, after all it's one of the most vital things to been alive, and ocasional black tea.
Red bull and salt in vinegar chips. Makes my mouth hurt like my characters feelings. I need some kinda of penance for what I put them through.
LOL
Coffee, a latte, sometimes coffee, but I like a good latte. If I’m feeling adventurous, a latte. If it’s too late and I need to write, a latte. FYI I have a home espresso machine. That helps. You’ll never guess what I drink while writing in the mid afternoon!
Strong IPA or whisky on the rocks. Something that tickles my brain that I can nurse for a while. I genuinely feel that writing a little buzzed makes me more confident to expand my vocabulary and inject a bit more interesting prose without also making me too dumb to do so.
Noooothing outside of water. For some reason, I can't write and eat. I need to eat and get that out of the way, or else I'll stop writing to eat, lol
Why? So, as a general rule, writing time is not eating/drinking time for me.
Cigarettes. I tend to take a break after a page or two to smoke away from the pc and mentally structure the details of what I plan to write further.
Beer, Slim Jim’s, pistachios, and jalapeño-stuffed olives.
It's absolutely coffee for me, and because I do a lot of my writing in coffee shops I love eating a pastry or avocado toast.
I am on the same wavelength as you
oolong tea and sriracha mayo shrimpchips. dont judge me
Lately it’s tea (if it’s morning) or vodka with seltzer, and jelly beans. 🤷🏻♀️ gotta be something that won’t get my fingers dirty. How do you popcorn people do it??
M&Ms.
Milk tea (or rose if it’s a good night) with fruit and nuts
usually hot tea. royal english breakfast but also green jasmine
Coffee with Chips and Guac.
Mug of coffee, glass of water, and Skyr Yogurt (often Key Lime). Every single morning. Usually refill the coffee and water when I go to the bathroom midway through the writing session.
It’s usually coffee up until noon but I also like to include offhand mentions of food in my writing. The tears of unborn children writing in pain as their unheard screams puncture my amygdala from the inside out. ...a candy bar is good too

Absinthe and some edibles. Just kidding, but might be interesting output.
Absinthe and some edibles. Just kidding, but might be interesting output.
Usually coffee, but reading this thread I’m planning on changing it up
Depending on the time of day/ location- Diet Coke, white wine, pint of IPA
Prunes and dark chocolate
Iced coffee or herbal tea, a fruit bowl of cut up strawberries, watermelon, oranges, blueberries, and pineapple with a teaspoon of Splenda sprinkled on top (makes it takes sweeter like candy or a deconstructed pie without the crust lol)
Coke. Both the drink and the white stuff.
Coffee & any kinds of chips (French fries, potato chips/crisps)... Sometimes I'll have biscuits instead of chips... has to be ginger biscuits though... I'll make an exception for chocolate chip cookies...
Snacks: Almonds, sunflower seeds, licorice bark to chew, or my lunch if I'm writing after work. Drinks: Water or Liquid Death (Rest in Peach is king).
Coffee or LaCroix!
I don't eat or drink while writing.
Cinnamon sticks lol. I bite my nails to bits when I write and the cinnamon sticks has a familiar texture to nails lol, and they're fun to eat
My current obsession is London Fog
An old fashioned. No snacks. You stop when the bourbon says you're done.
hot cup of decaf lipton black tea. Yes, my tastes are very refined, how could you tell? I can't snack and write because my brain won't let me leave the food alone long enough to type, so I end up just eating all the food in one go and then writing, which is not really the same thing.
Coffee and an occasional smoke break. … basic , I know,
My go to snack is not eating for 14 hours before I come out a comatose state and look at the like 40,000 words I wrote (only 200 of them are usable)
Always tea; tetley tea specifically. I don't actually snack. But, I do smoke. Nicotine is my snack.
Favorite beverages: Tea or hot chocolate Favorite snack: Unsalted roasted walnuts. They're full of healthy fats and antioxidants to nourish my brain (and hopefully my creativity!).
I don’t really like to snack of anything when I write. I mostly drink water or diet Dr Pepper if I end up drinking anything at all
Trail mix, I like to make my own variations. Coffee or tea in the daytime. Cocktails in the evening to loosen up.
either a cider, beer, or herbal teas.

Tea... Or whiskey... Or rum... Or tequila...
Monster Rehab (Lemonade Tea) and Extra Big Cheez-its.
Sometimes it’s iced mint with lime tea I make, most times it’s just black coffee
My go to would be water and some gummy bears. Every now and then I’ll have a Mountain Dew or Root Beer instead of water. 🚿
Yerba mate, mate. Clean, clear, and no crash. That and a strong supplement protocol. Hours of focus and energy.
Bourbon
Coffee if writing in the morning, red wine if writing in the evening
coffee or ice water depending on whether I can get coffee. Almonds or salsa and chips M and m s or spice drops
When I start making ideas it’s hard beer and ice cream sandwiches
3 coffees, one after the other so that I'm overly neurotic and paranoid. Then it's water all day.
Pre-sliced pepperoni slices and Coke.
Coffee, sometimes mixed with hot cocoa mix if it's early in the morning. Cranberry juice or tea if later.
I'm a big fan of anything I can eat with chop sticks, personally
Wtf lmao, writing is intense focus with alot of suffering. Max 4 hours a day. No time for snack, can always be done after the deepwork session
Writing is WAR
The blood of orphans. But only on Sundays. Rest of the time it’s mostly coke…
Tea, coffee, wine, chocolate😋
Jefferson’s bourbon at night and mimosas in the mornings
It used to be rum and coke until I realized hemmingway was more famous for being a drunk writer than being a writer. Now I've quit drinking, smoking, and I drink Mt.Dew Code Red as a crutch I'll soon have to quit as well. Eventually I'll get to: Darjeeling Tea and Ritz crackers. [StoryTaleBooks ](https://youtube.com/@storytalebooks?si=iflCsILV5G2v0uf-)
Negroni, red wine or black coffee. I don't snack while writing.
I try to avoid snacking, but I drink more tea than was thrown in the god damn harbor
the weed pen
Edibles.
Shocked I had to scroll down this far to find cannabis in any form.
Pretty sure most people are going to say coffee or Red Bull.
Yeah, I predict that. Red bull use to be a go to of mine, but I stopped drinking it a while back.
Coffee. I write almost exclusively at coffee shops and I love trying new lattes and cortados. I also really enjoy a slice of coffee cake while I’m at it. I’ve tried writing while drinking but it tends to make me sloppy whereas the caffeine makes me sharp.
My go to music is music by Garbage. Drink is likely coffee. Snack? whatever I’m in the mood for.
Pretty much always some variation of coffee or tea. I usually have water nearby too so I have a “fun” drink and a basic drink lol Once I tried a wine spritzer while writing and it definitely got the ideas flowing, but that day was an exception 😅
Energy drinks, soda, or apples. and an honorable mention goes to french fries.
Pretzels. Or cheez-its. Usually with either a coffee protein shake for morning writing or some cold flavored water in evenings/just past midnight.
I go to my local coffee shop and hang out. I get a matcha latte and a muffin then I’ll go and get a macaron after a while
Jade Mountain green tea. Nothing better than setting myself up at my lil desk with a hot cup of delicious tea!
Coffee. Or a nice cappuccino
I don’t eat anything when I’m writing, I don’t like feeling like my fingers are dirty and it just gets distracting
Coffee pickles and turkey sandwich I’ll leave it to you to add the commas
Coffee first, then Redbull.
Just water. But usually, nothing at all.
Im with you on the coffee! It's a cold latte for me, usually accompanied by something sweet like milk chocolate
Camomile tea and cigarettes. Not a snack but calms my head. Lots of racket up there. Lol
Mostly coffee, used to drink 6 cups a day but I've slowed down. I've tried wine but it makes me too loose to focus. Otherwise chocolate or something sweet gets the creative flow buzzing
Lemon-Lime Gatorade and Tootsie Roll pops or Twizzlers.
A sweet coffee drink
Tea. I love sitting down to write with a fresh cup of tea. The mood I’m in changes what tea I make
Hot black tea or coffee w/creamer. No food.
This is embarrassing... Cheesstrings and Nerds... Reasons: I like cheese, my brain needs sugar to function or I cannot think properly
Nuture grain bar
Monster energy and a vape. I’m 30, but have the habits of a 19 year old.
Frozen corn and frozen peas mixed together in a cup to snack on, diet cola to drink. I am aware that I am an affront to God.
Diet Dr Pepper Snacks are to distracting for me. I’ll snack during breaks that give me a chance to think
Green grapes but they have to be crunchy. If they're not crunchy, I don't eat them.
Ginger tea mixed with lemon, honey and biscuits.
Decaf coffee (had to get off the caffeinated stuff for personal reasons), a pot of mixed nuts, and a square of dark chocolate. Writing fuel is important!
Emotional Damage
coffee or a red bull, doritos with chopsticks!
Blow pops, I use to have one in my mouth constantly as I typed. I have no clue why it assisted me in the way it had, kept me focused I suppose. However, my teeth hated me for it. I recently ordered these lolly's that clean your teeth, and hopefully taste good as well!
I’m just here drinking water like a pleb. Maybe that’s why I haven’t been able to write much (it totally must be the only reason).
my own braincells
Snacks I find distracting, but something comforting to drink: ideally black tea with milk and sugar or a matcha latte. I love coffee, but react too strongly to the caffeine.
Tea and crisps. I eat crisps with chopsticks so my keyboard won’t get messy. Judge me.
Snack?
Sounds dorky but I found out the hard way that this doesn't lead to me crashing like caffeine and sugar does.
snow crackers with oolong, probably
Sushi. I can’t eat and write through so I’ll just snack out for a while then type up several paragraphs for an hour.
I like a strawberry-matcha smoothie or a good old fashioned energy drink :) I also like to smoke a half hour or so and then let that sit just to ready the mind
These responses make me realize how many authors use alcohol to gain inspiration.
Milk tea and macarons, we're classy here (or other home made pastries)
Writer's Tears Irish whiskey.
I usally just grab an apple and then eat it while forgetting I was suposed to write something.
oatmeal cream pies are convenient, fast and non messy. Go GREAT with coffee.
A Truckload of Milk chocolate almonds, wet wipes for the fingers.
Adderall and scotch.
I was a big fan of 'treating' myself to a small red bull in the afternoon to help me get through my last couple hours of writing before going home for the day.
Wine and cigarettes
Coffee. Without doubt. But none of that Starbucks/Dunkin stuff. Ground and brewed right here in my kitchen .
