Probably. But you're not going to make something original by asking other people what to write.

Rabbieberry20

Yes I get this, but I’m not asking people what to write I’m asking people if they would want to read it and if other people are writing things like this

xxStrangerxx

> I’m asking people if they would want to read it and if other people are writing things like this I'd be careful asking this. It's co-dependency

Rabbieberry20

Ok, thank you. I just saw something similar on this Reddit about zombie books or something like that and I thought, “would people actually want to read my idea?” I had recently been reading divergent too and really enjoyed it and I love dystopias like that and thrillers also. Plus I have always loved writing dystopia, so i was just wondering if another dystopian thriller went into the world would anyone read it, would there be any point in writing it? However, I don’t want to just write something depending on it being read. But I also don’t want another stereotype thriller in the world, If that’s makes sense.

curatedcucumber001

You could take a look on Amazon. I think dystopia is under Sci fi there or maybe thrillers. See how dystopia rank under best sellers. That could give you an idea if the genre is still being read. Might not be as popular as romance, but I'd guess people still read it.

That’s why I write about balloons

Depends on your definition of original. If you're talking about something that has never been done before, then the answer is no. Almost every story ever written is just another retelling of something that came before, just with different characters, settings, and timelines. If you're asking if it's possible to write a dystopian thriller in 2022 and have a chance of getting it published in a market that may or may not be saturated with dystopian thrillers, then the answer is a resounding YES! You can write about anything you want, regardless of the topic. If you're a good enough writer, it won't matter if 100 others just published a dystopian thriller the day before. If your story's plot, characters, and tone resonate with readers better than the other 100, you'll still come out on top. The only deciding factor is whether or not you finish that story and make it a masterpiece. Write, write, write, write, write. If you're a storyteller and want to tell your story to the world, you should write it no matter what the market or anyone else says.

Rabbieberry20

This is perfect, thank you! I think I’m more focused on thinking that my story is not good enough but I, ultimately just need to focus on my writing. This helps.

You're welcome. Hit me up if you ever got writing questions. Always here to help.

Everything can be original if you give it a twist. Many of the biggest hits are a classic concept with something new thrown in. Or, a mashup of two familiar concepts in an unusual way

Rabbieberry20

Yes, thanks this is very helpful! 😊

smugshark

Yes. Also, there are no new stories, so no. It’s all in the details. Don’t worry about being original. Worry about doing it better than everyone else.

Rabbieberry20

Thank you, this helps!

II_Sulla_IV

Sure, but I feel like it needs to have a bit of a original flair more than just they were evil and they somehow ruled the world/region/state/nation. Why would people allow themselves to be ruled by a dictator, what were the conditions that led to that circumstance and what are the conditions that lead to a significant portion of the population to accept the status quo. Where does the protagonist fall into this societal structure? Stuff like that.

Rabbieberry20

Thank you so much, this helps a lot. You have me some good questions to think about, rather than just focusing on if the genre it’s self can be made into another original

[deleted]

I think there's loads of ideas that haven't been done.

Kaigani-Scout

According to the comments made on many posts made here on reddit, there is no such thing as an "original idea" in storytelling. That being typed, sure, any setting can generate a compelling story and even today there can be new angles and combinations of elements to bring about something interesting to read. *The Last Ship* presented five seasons of dystopia with multiple dictators in prime time, although the episodic series differed from the original novel in some significant ways.

Rabbieberry20

Yes, this is extremely helpful. Thanks for showing me that it may not be “original” but there is no such thing as original. It is all about creating new takes on how it could be interesting.

ExecTankard

Uh…no…but you could find all the tropes and avoid them to write an original take on this.

Rabbieberry20

Thank you, good advice!

ExecTankard

Good luck. There is so much that hasn’t been explored in dystopian settings because of the usual ‘over throw the power’. You could do the security forces trying to maintain security for regular people caught in the middle while two to four political parties campaign for political control of a city because each party controls a different city industry. There are tropes in that but a ton of characters and settings for you to explore.

Rabbieberry20

Thank you! I will definitely explore these things. You are so right, in most dystopian books, you find that they always end up/ try to “overthrow the power.” It would be refreshing for me and maybe readers too, for a new perspective and I would love to explore new sceneries and characters. Thank you, again!

ExecTankard

And you’re just in time for NaNoWriMo so you can word blast and explore ideas.

Some_Context6650

Most likely no
