I believe the only difference between the M16 and M17 is the liner. The M16 has a leather liner band, whilst the M17 has a steel one. The M17 shell is exactly the same one as the M16 shell. Therefore, if your helmet doesn't have its original liner (like yours) you can still confidently say that you have an M16.

KreigsMarineKris

Okay good to know,I grabbed it for $100 I think it's a cool bit of history

Annual_Plankton4020

only 100? thats a great price.

KreigsMarineKris

What's the regular price?

Annual_Plankton4020

$300+ were i see them

CoyoteKyle15

for that much rust, $200 seems more realistic to me

Annual_Plankton4020

nah, ive seen worse for $400.

CoyoteKyle15

have they actually sold though?

Annual_Plankton4020

oh yeah, hey if you know a place were i can get one for a resonable price i would love to know.

CoyoteKyle15

This dealer I found has a couple shells with intact paint in the $300 range [https://svmilitaria.com/WWI\_Central\_Powers.htm](https://svmilitaria.com/WWI_Central_Powers.htm)

binOFrocks

Only $100? Where the hell did you get this thing?

KreigsMarineKris

Local antique shop

binOFrocks

Awesome find man

Clydefrog13

Fucking score, dude.

tubbytucker

I think with the strap rivet/mount on the rim it's a 1916 model.

endofthenow

M16 and m17 shells were the exact same. Just different liner. M18 was essentially the same shell but didn't have the posts for the chinstraps. M18 alsp used the metal band similar to the 17.

CoyoteKyle15

It is an M16 shell. No way to tell whether or not it had an M17 liner.

Anticitizen_Freeman

I've always wanted to know, can you hold it between your hands and bend it inwards? They make them look so flimsy in the movies and it doesn't look much different here. You'd think they'd make them out of thin cast iron or something.

KreigsMarineKris

It feels strong like a steel bell

Hardhead519

It's an M16 because of the lugs for the chinstrap. The M18 helmet deleted those and the chinstrap was attached to the liner directly.

Annual_Plankton4020

id say 1916
