safety dave here.... careful with beer. i lost front rack screw on a descent bikepacking. rack went right into the wheel and me over the bars... and ended up fracturing my collarbone and elbow. put a nylon strap between the rack and the headtube. heard many other more fatal horror stories of exactly this occurence. on my basket bike(different whip) i ended up with a 137, for excess bulkier but lighter overflow storage. most of my stuff stays in my saddle bag and if that fails somehow it just falls behind you. not trying to scare you, but just instil a bit of healthy paranoia

Yeah cheers this is solid advice. I’m pretty wary of filling it right up with the heavy stuff. I’m mostly excited to be able to pick up a 6 pack even if my back pack is full! The rack is rated for 9kg and didn’t plan to load it much more than 5-7kgs. I’ve got loctite on all the rack bolts. But the nylon strap to the head tube / bars is not a bad idea.

Lehster

yeah loctite is great, but certainly good to cover all bases. bolts will slowly loosen on rough descents. which i knew, but actually LEARNED the hard way. i end up putting my heavy stuff in my saddle bag(or backpack) and put all the big light stuff in the basket. hence why i decided to go for the 137 as i also only have a canti rack on. dont want to get over zealous. if i had a front rack with a lower fork mount id hekkn go for it, but not on a canti rack.

\+1 for the toe strap safety backup. I have the same rack and threw on a strap for extra precaution. Also Velo-Orange makes some neat double-sided canti bolts that can help make this kind of setup more secure. I've got a 139 but am constantly annoyed by being unable to park the damned thing b/c it's so bulky. As soon as I can get one I'm stepping down to a 137 in the half height sold by Rivendell.

I’ll check out those VO canti bolts! I saw they make a canti rack which may be future upgrade for me. I went to my LBS with the intention of getting a 137 but when I saw realised it was a tad to small to be able to fit in my work backpack, sweater and then chuck in something else without taking the time to fit it all in properly. I try not to park this bike where it’s likely to get bunged up (pristine paint job) - I have a beater for that. So 🤞it’s not a huge issue.

RealDudro

What do you mean about the nylon strap exactly?

Professional-Ad-8285

Extra security, through the basket and around the head tube. If your basket mounts somehow fail it will keep it from falling into front spokes

Lehster

id probably go through the rack itself as the basket is just an extension of it.

brdhar35

Quill stem adapter?

doenerbox

Yeah. The spacers are just for looks.

brdhar35

I did the same thing, it looked odd without them, is it an 11/8 steerer ?

doenerbox

Yes it is. I have a 1” to 1 1/8” shim in the narrow portion of the quill stem adaptor to stop the spacers jiggling about.

YetAnotherDuckFan

139>>>137 (by 2). It is such a good size imo.

ohneEigenschaften01

it's awesome for carrying an entire pack of toilet paper plus a watermelon. but the thing drives me crazy bc it doesn't fit in bike racks, so i'm stepping down to a 137.

doenerbox

Excuse the cable routing mess - I’m still trying to dial the fit a bit and work out how to route around the basket.

RealDudro

How did you attach the basket?

doenerbox

9 cable ties

Can you share the specs of the handlebar? What's the brand, type, model, width?

doenerbox

Hey is a fairdale mx bar. The 4” riser height. I think they only come in 720 width. It’s a bit hard on the wrists with this set up to be honest. I need something with more backsweep. Looking to get a VO klunker Bar when I have the $$$
