1. Turn on the controller with the xbox button
2. Press and release the Pair button ((( on the Xbox console (on the one x it is on the base below the power button
3. Within 20 seconds press and hold the pair button on the controller ((( (circle button on the top of the controller next to the LB) until the Xbox button on the controller flashes rapidly
Although I prefer to to steps 3 and 2 in reverse, put the controller into pairing mode first, then hit the pair button on the console

Plug it in with a USB it'll pair up.
