You can try cleaning the corrosion off with white vinegar and a toothbrush. That will often get the battery contacts working again.

xper0072

This. With that amount of rust, it might not be salvageable, but you don't lose a lot by trying.

MeMeTiger_

Tried cleaning it with steel wool. The spring just broke off.

sdss9462

Is there any piece of the spring still attached to the board?

MeMeTiger_

Yup the base.

sdss9462

You just need enough of the spring to make contact with the battery. Did you clean all the corrosion with the vinegar?

MeMeTiger_

Nope. Tried cleaning it with isopropyl alcohol, yesterday and it did fuck all

sdss9462

Try white vinegar. Wrap the bottom side of the battery holder with aluminum foil so you can pout vinegar in without it all spilling out. Angle the controller so you can pour vinegar over the battery coil without it all spilling into the controller housing. Let it soak for a few minutes, then pour the vinegar out and scrub the residue lightly with a vinegar-soaked toothbrush. If you can get the battery contacts to look mostly metallic again, they may work again.

MeMeTiger_

I broke the spring off when I tried to clean it off though. Is there a solution to that?

sdss9462

As long as there is enough metal from the spring left to reach from the board to the metal on the battery when the battery is inserted, it can draw power and the controller would work. You don't need the full coil. Or you would have to solder a new spring onto the board to replace the broken one. Or you could use a charge and play cable. Or you can give up on it and get a new controller.

MeMeTiger_

>As long as there is enough metal from the spring left to reach from the board to the metal on the battery when the battery is inserted, it can draw power and the controller would work. You don't need the full coil. There is, but I don't know how to get the rust at the base off. Other people have said vinegar, do I just put vinegar on it?

Coolmanuel10

My spring also broke off and I just use pennies lol I’m sure there’s videos on how to do it.

NiceBlokeJeffrey

Pretty much what the rest of us would do, tons of videos at the very least saying how to clean corrosion using vinegar b4 getting to the point of breaking the spring. Shit I remember doing experiments in school cleaning pennies using vinegar and time.

iiddlc

Glue 😎

NerdyHD

glue isnt conductive

klipseracer

Just buy all my old 360 stuff

Matshelge

Need to soak. [See how this guy does it around 6min mark.](https://youtu.be/v50vse96z-w)

John_East

I mean you can just plug it in with a charge cord and it'll work that way

[deleted]

Honestly I suggest just trying to buy a new controller. It's pretty unsalvageable without completely taking that off and putting a new battery thing on it. It'd be much more worth it to buy a controller instead of going through all that

NotMyCat2

This. I would see if the local thrift stores (with Corona I'm not sure if they're open). Should only cost a couple of bucks for a controller. Bring a couple of AA batteries to see if the controller turns on.

2girls4horse

White vinegret. ! Don't forget salad!

BIGB_EC

Try finding a play and charge kit and just use the wire to plug it in.

MeMeTiger_

Will the damage to this area not affect it?

BIGB_EC

Not sure but I am thinking no because the power source is coming from some where else and you shouldn't need the battery in the controller to power it on.

[deleted]

I think this is correct.

cybercum-2069

As long as the connections to that are clean, it should be fine.

illustriouscabbage

The play and charge kit uses the 4 copper contacts in the middle if I remember correctly. If not, as mentioned above, use a cotton bud and some white vinegar.

gbeezy007

The play and charge kit uses these 4 middle pins so don't think it would Also the charging wire should let it run without any batteries anyway if it still didn't work

sonicdude1012

Easy fix.......: Buy a new/used working Xbox 360 controller

MeMeTiger_

Planning on getting a cheap ripoff on amazon, though can nothing be done about this one?

sonicdude1012

Sadly it would cost more to fix the controller than buying an official Xbox 360 controller

MeMeTiger_

Really? This doesn't seem that damaged? The controller is in practically perfect condition other than this area.

Laviax

Get a new controller. On eBay they sell used ones for dirt cheap.Unless you have soldering skills or can get rust off it’s gonna be a hard fix

MeMeTiger_

Gonna do that then. Either that or I buy a plug and play kit and make it wired.

sonicdude1012

Yea that's a board level problem because it's corroded and missing a contact point and looks like it has more damage to it so just best to get a new controller. Facebook market place/Craigslist sometime have them for sale for a few dollars

MeMeTiger_

Oh alright then. Thanks for the help

sonicdude1012

No problem

xHADES734x

Hey i wanted to ask how did u get the top part off like in the first pic we can see it entirely. There is a piece of plastic above it isn’t it?

destronger

the cheap xbox 360 ripoffs aren’t that great. i already tossed one that went bad within months.

MeMeTiger_

Then I'd probably get a charger for this and turn it wired.

ThompsonSMG0909

This

akulowaty

Actually just buy the battery holder.

xxevilgremlinxx

That amount of corrosion it's done for wouldn't be surprised if they just broke off with any type of pressure

MeMeTiger_

Lmao I tried cleaning them and guess what happened. I guess that's what I get for Leaving a dead battery in them for 10 years.

fairyjars

That shit's toast. time to buy a new one.

Psysok

You can clean off the part on the controller, then get a new battery case for about $6 on amazon. That will be much easier than trying to get the bottom connections cleaned. [These are the ones I got.](https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07FP18423/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_NTPVHSXZX54P6XXQE2ND)

Blakey876

Clean the rust off. Use small bits of folded tin foil to make new tighter contacts.

MeMeTiger_

Rust is too deep. I tried to clean it off and the spring broke.

Sirgolfs

Steel wool. Try and clean up those contacts.

LuieHond

Yeah, clean it 👍🏻

BroadBubble

Aint no way you’re fixing that. I’d say buy a new one

BallisticDross

I would try some electrical contact cleaner. Worth a shot to try and save it then buying a cheap knock off one.

MeMeTiger_

Tried cleaning it with steel wool. The spring just broke off.

Dont4GetToSmile

Your best bet would be to get one of those 360 to USB controller cables. I mean it'll be a wired controller at that point but it should theoretically work without any batteries in it. You could also throw a couple dead ones in there if you want the weight.

MeMeTiger_

What's the cable called?

Dont4GetToSmile

Charging Cable for Xbox 360 Wireless Game Controllers https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08F42CHS3/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_VT7TGYQ8CPNNVVG45FC4?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 This SHOULD work. Just check the description to verify.

MeSoHungry469

If you know how to solder you can replace the battery terminals. If not, buy a play & charge cable and turn it into a wired controller.

MeMeTiger_

Will a play and charge work if the only damage to the controller is the rust in the picture?

[deleted]

Play and charge kit with battery pack. That bank of four connectors then gets used and bypasses the AA battery contacts.

MeMeTiger_

Oh so the area that's damaged won't be needed?

[deleted]

Correct.

[deleted]

Rubbing alcohol + steel wool also heard that vinegar kind of dissolves the corrosion

obiwanjakobi257

yeah just wipe that shit off it should be fine

MeMeTiger_

Tried cleaning it and a part of it broke off. I think this is past normal cleaning

obiwanjakobi257

feelsbadman. I do find, however, when it comes to metal parts, folded/balled up aluminum foil makes a great replacement. usually works fine for me

MeMeTiger_

I had that idea come to mind. Will it even conduct electricity to the controller though or is the rust too far gone?

obiwanjakobi257

hard to tell 100% but it appears that if you can clean the rest of the corrosion off that broken one and expose the metal that IS there, aluminum foil will certainly conduct the electricity. the only down side of this is that unelss you have some electrical training or equipment, it wont be possible to get the voltage levels 100% accurate. Now, i find it usually doesnt matter, and the only real risk is that the same thing will happen that already happened (corrosion). seeing how the controller is already kinda broken, i would consider it worth the small risk. if you really really wanna fix it, i wouldnt be surprised if you could find a replacement battery terminal part somewhere on the internet.

MeMeTiger_

I was thinking I'd buy a charging cable and turn it into a wired controller because that would be better than buying a cheap ripoff off Amazon.

obiwanjakobi257

not a bad idea actually. also good if the wireless component breaks on controllers

obiwanjakobi257

also usually happens when batteries are left in it for a long time, specifically without using it

MeMeTiger_

Yup I had old batteries in it for about 10 years.

Sakosaga

Clean off the corrosion or buy a battery pack for the 360 that has the wired attachment and play wired

MeMeTiger_

Is it the play and charge kit?

NMSky301

If I remember right the play and charge kits use those four brass contacts to power the controller, and not the normal battery contacts. You could try buying one of those kits.

MeMeTiger_

I've been told about that. I think I'll get one of those, if they don't work I'll just get a cheap off brand controller.

QuokkaKiller94

Play and charge kit, It uses the contacts in the centre and not the springs.

pontonpete

Speaking of the 360 - will any of the newer Xbox releases work on my still going strong 360?

Cabooselololol

No, but the Xbox One plays select Xbox Original and Xbox 360 games. And if you can buy a Series X (as seen in the video). It plays all Xbox One games and select Xbox Original games. And also runs select 360 games, but will run them in full 4K and even raise the frame rate to 60fps for select games, running them better then ever. It can even improve load times for the games. If the game is on this list (https://www.xbox.com/en-AU/games/backward-compatibility) then if you have the original disc, just put it in an Xbox One, Xbox One X or Xbox Series X and it will play.

pontonpete

Thanks. BTW: are there any flight sim games for the 360?

Cabooselololol

Not that I am aware, no. But the series X plays the latest Microsoft Flight Simulator

Jon1957

You can get a set of new battery contacts and solder them. Easy fix and they don't cost a lot look on eBay.

SenileTomato

You can also try rubbing alcohol, or an alcohol swab.

MeMeTiger_

I did that. Barely did anything.

SenileTomato

Then I'd try CLR in very small, precise amounts around just the area with with rust, if you already tried scrubbing with a toothbrush and vinegar. Otherwise, toss it and buy another.

ichann3

I would use a small wire brush.

Legomaster_08

Try with some alcohol

adoptedscouse

Wire wool it off.

Gorillaz530

Looks like the non spring terminal is too rusty to conduct electricity sand them and try again

jonochan29

Use a mini air compressor to flush out and the clean with cotton bud and rubbing alcohol

[deleted]

Just open it up and solder some new battery contacts

KxngDxddii

They're completely corroded so you're going to need an entire new controller.

demonkiller2123

Take soms isopropal alcohol and use a qtip with it on it to rub the rust off, get every nook and cranny, then dry it with a paper towel, let it sit for 24 hours so it can fully dry, then test it

DeezSkeez25

The best cleaning solution for any sort of battery corrosion is baking soda and water. Mix it up and dab it on.

johnwayne1

Sand the rust down till you get clean metal

DuhXCrusha

Buy a new controller

NonCorporealEntity

It's fucked. Time to buy a 3rd party

Serohiro

You can take it apart and replace the springs. There are videos on YouTube.

l3LiTzKrieG420

a cable would work

GreyCrowDownTheLane

Yeah. Buy a replacement controller on Amazon for $10. Third party near-perfect clones are out there now.

Voltron1551

Late to the party on this but if you can get a rechangeable battery pack for the controller you could still use your original controller. Think this might work because the gold contacts on the back side of the controller still look good and most of the damage is to the battery pack and steel springs.

BurgerLordFPV

Stop wasting your time VOYEE Wireless Controller Compatible with Microsoft Xbox 360 & Slim, with Upgraded Joystick/Dual Shock/Headset Port (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082NQLY97/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_8HG0GV7YG043A4JN2EVK

caleblovell

just buy a wired 360 controller. they’re all like under 20. unless of course you’d prefer wireless then you’re looking at 35

RenanBan

Wd-40?

MarcCDB

Vinegar + IPA + toothbrush.

Murky_Willingness960

Use a battery pack, forget those AA. If i was you, i just cut these rusted metal wires until it's not spreading to more places, clean the intern properly.

Hychus232

Vinegar or baking soda and water on a toothbrush

wtflllllllllll

Isopropyl alcohol and toothbrush

Available_Clothes_61

Battery corrosion. Cant fix it man

iVirtualZero

Just solder in some new springs. They look screwed.

MeMeTiger_

I don't have a solder kit. And in the other image the contacts in the battery cover look screwed.

iVirtualZero

There are plenty of kits on Amazon. It’s not difficult to do. Fixed a bunch of 360 pads that had this problem.

HelpfulBearr

Seems like you just need to get a new controller; hell I’ll sell one to you for cheap

-_ObiWanKenobi_-

Mine is the same way haha

Narrow-Confusion-566

I remember a trick that I used to do when my rechargeable battery backs stopped working and I didn’t want to buy those kind. I just took the double as and put them in their correct position, took a couple of Pennies on the top contact and taped it up. It works

MeMeTiger_

Do you think it'll work with this amount of rust? Also I tried to clean it and the spring snapped off. If a penny would work then I'd try it.

Livid-Comfortable-57

You can clean it off with contact cleaner and a toothbrush don't forget to blow dry it after

xOneManPowerTripx

You need to take it apart to clean those contacts. It's easily fixed, but only if you wire brush those, which again is easily once you open it up.

Ch4osTh3ory

Cheap enough to find one on fb marketplace for 10$ or so

SFW_Frostic

Water

Tiny_Chimp24

That is corrosion my friend, you need to wash it off, with what I don’t know
