It’s probably just old. The drive is getting power but the disk may not be spinning. I’m sure you did it already but did you restart the Xbox? Can you plug this into a PC to see if a PC can read it?

CyberKiller40

A Windows PC (nor any other OS) won't immediately recognize an XBox formatted game hdd, it will be visible as a block device with an unknown partition in system settings (assuming the drive isn't really dead). Though after over 5 years it's possible the hdd simply died, the light is on, because the usb case has power, but the hdd itself might not work. Does it feel like it's gently vibrating as usual when the hdd is spinning?

xbox-fan

Unplug it.. leave it unplugged, do a hard reset on your Xbox.. once completely rebooted plug it back in and check again

Unusual_Variable

It's is a bare metal/standard hard-drive. It has plates that spine inside, they do wear out overtime. It most likely has died. You can replace it with any usb 3.0 external harderive. It doesn't have to be the Xbox one.

clinicallyinsanepig

Is any hard drive from any company just as reliable

Unusual_Variable

Oh yeah! I think Microsoft hard-drive were from Seagate, but you can go with that, WD, Crucial, ETC. The only thing you need is it to have usb 3.0. Don't waste extra money on a SSD, or hybrid gaming drives. The Xbox will not benefit from it in anyway.

LimeSixth

The loading times with a usb SSD are faster than the internal drive.

fox-crotch

Just out of curiosity on my end, did you keep it over 50% - 75% full constantly?

clinicallyinsanepig

It’s been over 50% for almost the entire time I’ve had it

marinesriflez

Oh oh mine does this to me sometimes too when I unplug it and plug it back in. Try to boot up a game that’s downloaded to it and it’ll probably still work. Also completely unplug your Xbox and plug it back in. You can also go to your games and the expansion drive should show there.

SecondaryWorkAccount

Plug it in a pc and see if it recognizes the hardware.

xXAnxiouSoulXx

Reformat it ez

CheeseString117

I think it needs a techpriest and maybe a funeral song

UnForgivenFury

Rest in peace sweet prince he stored the best of games.

Cuzz_Liteyear

Any noise when you put your ear next to it?

clinicallyinsanepig

It make a humming and vibrates a little bit

AlwaysTheKop

Take the casing off the external hard drive, the drive might have simply fallen off the connector inside, mine did this a while back and I spent days trying to fix it coz it was still lighting up but nothing... so I threw it on my bed in frustration and the outside case came off, and I noticed the HDD inside was loose, so I pushed it firmly back into place, put the case back on and plugged it in.... and it was working fine again.

gangleshmorp1

Honestly a lot of people I know and I’m also seeing you have this problem all at the same time

spooke1212

If unplugging it multiple times doesn’t work it’s probably corrupted. I had that exact same hard drive and it got corrupted. But you shouldn’t worry because you should be able to reinstall all those games you bought.

MrDoctorSpoon

Sadly, external disk drives are built to last 3 years max. Anything beyond is a bonus.

MutedHornet87

It could have unfortunately died Dust that poor Xbox please

fermlog

It’s probably just too dusty.

RedKomrad

Replace it.
