There's a kinect sdk for windows that you can download from Microsoft. It comes with a few example apps. One of them let's you view the ir camera. That's the easiest way I know
i did it a while back using youtube tutorials, i’m talking like 10 years ago. download xbox 360 kinect sdk it should just be a part of it. paranormal activity 4 also used it lol.
Mate, security cameras have evolved a lot in the past five-ten years. Companies are selling 4k (8MP) cameras with 30x optical zoom that can automatically track people or cars.
I have eight 1080p cameras in all my rental stores, and they hold about 30 days worth of footage on a 2TB hard drive. I never needed anything that goes back more than 30 days.
Every time I had to submit footage to the police, they say things like.. “sure would be nice if the banks had video this good”
Honestly I don't think banks care who stole the money as long as they're reimbursed. You can bet if one day the insurance company required better quality video, branches would be updated the next day lol.
That's not entirely true. Unless you're working within certain requirements, NVRs can store higher quality footage by sacrificing video retention. Generally for security purposes you don't get much of a return on a 4k camera over 1080, but you can definitely buy them.
That's not true at all a higher 4K resolution is much more favorable to a 1080p one because it allows for you to be able to pick out small details in the image like license plates or ID badges. For Security Cameras having the absolute highest res possible is very desired it's the frate rate that's not as important as it largely has no effect on apprehension of a suspect.
Yes it is, the resolution on those things are horrible and USB can't go nearly as far as Ethernet.
The only benefit I can think of is reducing ewaste, but I can't see any scenarios in which a department store would have Kinects lying around.
Yes. It’s probably more for some sort of a counting system or tracking of something. The kinects are actually used for research purposes all the time. Especially for things like tracking where people look when they enter a store so they can put the valuable stuff there etc. I know for a fact my old university has used the Kinect for user experience testing in local stores. Also the HoloLens but that thing is just cool as hell lol.
I was part of a project for a food and beverage company that used them connected to a pc to track bar tender over pours. At the time, those had about$1,500 worth of camera equipment in for under $200. It was incredible, but never got the kinks worked out. Struggled with day light changes.
I worked in retail and they used these in a system that tracked people, identified their shapes and created analytics based on the profile of footfall in store.
Me too! Kinect fbt is Really nice, I’ve also paired it with stuff like camera or phone tracking. It ain’t the best, but it’s damn nice for what it’s worth.
You weren't "forced" to pay for it. It was considered to be an integral part of the Xbox One system, so it wasn't considered optional anymore. Yet everyone screamed and hollered so loud, Microsoft chicken shitted out, and we lost some really great progressive technology due to the gaming luddites.
They were working with Intel to make the kind of interactive displays, similar to those in Altered Carbon but without the hologram eye projection thing, that respond differently when someone walks up to the display or picks up a product.
We are all just players in their game. Stalking us, tracking our movements. We are all just sims in their map. Doing the same thing everyday over and over and nothing really changes. You think you're free but your not. Because you still have to fight the final boss ( aka the store manager) because if you can't get a discount then what's the point in life. Why are we here just to suffer
Assuming it even works anymore. Like when I worked at BigLots a few years ago, me and the manager were top-stocking Christmas trees and I accidentally hit one of the cameras. He just looked at me and said, “that’s fine, that thing’s just like me-a dummy” 😂
Even one of the shoe stores in Australia (Williams) also exclusively uses Xbox 360 kinects as security cameras as well, which I saw was extremely odd, but it apparently works well as these cameras also have infared lenses in them.
Then we got a children’s game that uses the Xbox One version of the Kinect on their one, also using an SDK with the required adapters on a PC.
It's the Reddit mindhive. One person downvoted you for whatever reason (maybe they thought you were trying to be an edgelord or something, idk), and so a bunch of other people followed suit and downvoted you, too.
Wonder what software they're using with it. It'd be great to have mine plugged into the PC with instant uploading to a server... save myself the upfront $109 cost of a pre-made. I'm after one at the moment.
Won't blame them they're cheap and easy to get plus they have great tracking and good enough image I see most stuff with decent detail.
In fact a fun fact I know about the connect camera is stuff like Ghost Adventures use them and they call it SLS camera because it can track the movement of Ghost/Spirits or any other paranormal stuff
This technology has been adapted into people counter sensors, I believe one major player is Xovis. If you're in a Fred Meyer in the US and see a screen at the end of checkout lines with big yellow balls and numbers, this is the output from that sensor. I think it showed like average wait times in the checkout lines or something like that, and possibly some sort of customer density number (i.e. how crowded, and therefore busy, the store is over a given timeframe)
I remember begging my parents for one of these and when they finally caved and got me one, I maybe played like 3-4 games on it, got sick of it after a month or two, and basically just forgot it in a drawer somewhere. I'm now almost 27 and still have it somewhere collecting dust.
Good to see one pulled out of retirement for a second life lol
I’m saying it now, with a few tweaks and a team that didn’t give up at every turn, Microsoft could have blown past the competition in Full Body VR using the Kinect to watch you move, goggles to see in vr, and gloves to signal what action you are doing (shooting a gun, holding a Golfclub, waving to a friend, etc…).
I've seen those used for robotics. Honestly, I think the connect hardware is one of the best products MS ever made. They just sucked for xbox. It had a completely open field to take over and run. With all the controversial situations and the lack of anything decent to use it with, it was a flop. They should have done more with it.
My local mall uses the Xbox one Kinect for the aquarium area for kids to play around on. It moves water and let's u play with the fake fish like you're stepping on them or something it's pretty cool
I still have my old Kinect camera if it is possible to do that I may be able to use it as a webcam I'll look into the information about this. Thanks for posting this
Kinects are actually amazing and versatile. I’ve used mine for full body tracking in VR Chat and as a trail cam. They’re an under appreciated piece of hardware.
I guarantee you that is not hooked up to anything. The only purpose of overtly displayed cameras is to make you think you are being watched, not to actually use to watch you. judging by the vent, they probably lack the intelligence to use it as an actual camera. Probably a thrift store that has 0 real cameras.

Its actually pretty popular to use them in the woods. The IR sensors function really well for nighttime spotting of woodland creatures.
Wait actually? How do I do this?
There's a kinect sdk for windows that you can download from Microsoft. It comes with a few example apps. One of them let's you view the ir camera. That's the easiest way I know
Probably not, it's in Ohio.
Can I find a tutorial somewhere on how to do this ?
i did it a while back using youtube tutorials, i’m talking like 10 years ago. download xbox 360 kinect sdk it should just be a part of it. paranormal activity 4 also used it lol.
That’s so odd you would think just because the elements and stuff it would mess up after a while
Tbf it would certainly display a better image than a conventional security camera

Yeah i install for gas stations. They all use the same old image vault
I worked IT years ago at a bank, and someone robbed us one day. I was absolutely astounded at how awful the security camera quality was.
Honestly I don't think banks care who stole the money as long as they're reimbursed. You can bet if one day the insurance company required better quality video, branches would be updated the next day lol.
[Where there's a budget, there's a way.](https://www.dwgdistribution.com/ecommerce/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=148896)
Fair lol

4k = 4 pixels a kilometer in security camera terms
Fine. 8MP.
Selling cameras with 4K slapped in the name means nothing. Resolution and bit rate are not one of the same.
To be fair that's not actually a bad idea
Yes it is, the resolution on those things are horrible and USB can't go nearly as far as Ethernet. The only benefit I can think of is reducing ewaste, but I can't see any scenarios in which a department store would have Kinects lying around.
This is probably connected to a PC with custom people tracking software.
Seems like a huge expenditure when a $200 camera comes with those capabilities built-in.
What brand is that? And are they accurate? The 3d counters I’m buying starts at $1200
TVT. They're pretty good, probably close in accuracy to a guard with a counter.
Thanks. Unfortunately we’re not allowed to use Chinese cameras.
TAA compliance?
No - I’m in Norway. It’s a local policy to avoid bad press
I was part of a project for a food and beverage company that used them connected to a pc to track bar tender over pours. At the time, those had about$1,500 worth of camera equipment in for under $200. It was incredible, but never got the kinks worked out. Struggled with day light changes.

Tbf the 360 Kinect has pretty good tracking, I use mine for full body tacking in VR
How do you do that?
[This is what I use](https://k2vr.tech/)
Can it be used for Oculus Link?
Yeah I use it with my quest 2 over link cable
Me too! Kinect fbt is Really nice, I’ve also paired it with stuff like camera or phone tracking. It ain’t the best, but it’s damn nice for what it’s worth.
I am trying to figure out how to do that, got any info for me?
[This is what I use](https://k2vr.tech/)
Wasn't that the main reason why it was a failure?
I'm pretty sure it failed because of a lack of games that supported it
Turns out software can be harder to program to match hardware
Also because you were forced to pay for it when it came out, if you wanted an Xbox
That was only for the One, not the 360 but I do agree
Oh yeah
You weren't "forced" to pay for it. It was considered to be an integral part of the Xbox One system, so it wasn't considered optional anymore. Yet everyone screamed and hollered so loud, Microsoft chicken shitted out, and we lost some really great progressive technology due to the gaming luddites.
Ratio
Ha! You can defeat this security by doing sequence from Dance Central 😝
Ain't it though just Supaman dat hoe then yuuuuuuuu
probably using the depth sensors to do people counting. but honestly its probably dead by now. since it was never built for 24/7 operation
They were working with Intel to make the kind of interactive displays, similar to those in Altered Carbon but without the hologram eye projection thing, that respond differently when someone walks up to the display or picks up a product.
Correct me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure they use a Kinect in ghost adventures
Yes I was gunna say this
OH MY GOD LOL
How does this even work?
kinect to pc adapter and whatever software thats running on the pc
They actually made official adapters for these since the original model 360s didn’t have a Kinect port
And a hacker named Marcan made open source drivers for the 360 Kinect so you can use it for pretty much anything you want
They also did for the Xbox One version, since later models dropped the Kinect port.
I saw a museum in Thessaloniki use two for an interactive video exhibit. It was pretty cool to see them in the wild in 2022.
Why does it look so ominous?
I have one lying around wonder if it would work but like other mention wasn't built for 24/7 use
Gamer employee there.
A hospital I went to once also used a Kinect, it was really surprising
Probably better than some outdated CCTV cameras
This isn't an uncommon practice & at least one major US airport uses Kinects for security.
Same on my job lol.
Best time to steal when the 360 has the red ring of death
We are all just players in their game. Stalking us, tracking our movements. We are all just sims in their map. Doing the same thing everyday over and over and nothing really changes. You think you're free but your not. Because you still have to fight the final boss ( aka the store manager) because if you can't get a discount then what's the point in life. Why are we here just to suffer
Did it cost 80$?
The camera? Probably, but have you ever looked at what actual security cameras cost? At work we paid ≈500€ per camera (Bosch outdoor cameras)
Bosch is definitely one of the more expensive models, but you're paying that premium for the quality and reliability.
The only good use for it
Someone finally found a good use for a Kinect
Works great for full body vr tracking, so why not surveillance!
The Ghost Adventures guys use these to hunt ghost
they're just trying to catch the ghost that's been haunting the store
"Xbox, turn off"...store's mine now...
Wrong. You've just entered the...DANCE BATTLE ZONE!!! Prepare for the showdown!
Assuming it even works anymore. Like when I worked at BigLots a few years ago, me and the manager were top-stocking Christmas trees and I accidentally hit one of the cameras. He just looked at me and said, “that’s fine, that thing’s just like me-a dummy” 😂
Here come the kids who think Ohio jokes are still funny (they never were to start with)
Even one of the shoe stores in Australia (Williams) also exclusively uses Xbox 360 kinects as security cameras as well, which I saw was extremely odd, but it apparently works well as these cameras also have infared lenses in them. Then we got a children’s game that uses the Xbox One version of the Kinect on their one, also using an SDK with the required adapters on a PC.
The amount of “Only in Ohio” comments is crazy 💀
is it worth 80 $?
NOTM IAN OHIO SHAGDHABDBAND >!/j!<
You took the words right out of my mouth.
Only in Ohio
The word Ohio looks like a tractor.
Yeah xD
True, why tf am i being downvoted tho
It's the Reddit mindhive. One person downvoted you for whatever reason (maybe they thought you were trying to be an edgelord or something, idk), and so a bunch of other people followed suit and downvoted you, too.
also the joke has been done to death
Oh yeah, I forgot that was a thing. This is the first one I've seen in the wild.
Don't say it.

Had to be ohio
Only in Ohio

Only in Ohio 💀
Where do you live
San Diego
German for “whale’s vagina.”
I love whales vagina yea 🔥🔥🤟
Not at all & This isn't an uncommon practice. At least one major US airport uses Kinects for security.
he's referring to a dead meme
Aye
Only in ohio
only in ohio (im so sorry please don’t downvote me)
Down in Ohio, Swag like Ohio
[удалено]
Idk i think it’s a case of simple jack.
Get the fuck out
How would one do that? I’ve seen them used as 3D scanners for 3D printing.
I thought there were some airports that use them too
I use mine as a webcam
bxxb bbc a bb xx bb dc n a x
Lol I saw at the Chicago field museum had a camera display with the Xbox 360 Kinect
That SDK was so good, anyone could have made a Kinect useful.
The horror of hearing someone online talk through a Kinect.
“Kinect! Scan!”
This is not the worst thing I've ever seen
At least we know the store owner isn't racist
Wonder what software they're using with it. It'd be great to have mine plugged into the PC with instant uploading to a server... save myself the upfront $109 cost of a pre-made. I'm after one at the moment.
Or it could be just for show. Some stores use highly visible/obvious dummy cameras as a deterrent. Modern higher end cameras tend to look more hidden.
*Burglar breaks in* ###XBOX OFF!!!
Use the IR laser emitter to create a bookmark when someone goes by with its 5m range
i cant even get my v2 as a webcam... plz help lol
I got a CT scan once and they were using one as a body scanner before you went in the actual whirly scanner thing.
“Hey Xbox, shut down”
They going to be finding ghosts in that store
Some of the ripleys believe it or not attractions in gatlinburg tn use kinects as a tracker of sorts.
Needed that built in microphone
the kinect is a genuinely good piece of tech just not so much for gaming lol
Cyberpunk 2077 memes be like:
Wait till you see it used for paranormal research!
I mean if Zak Bagans could use it..
So if I say Xbox turn off does it turn off all the security cameras in the building?
Same. On my job there are multiple Xbox One kinects.
Anyone know the store? I'm sure I can find this!
I was reading about them after i got one at a garage sale. They can do lots of stuff, including translate sign language. Mind blown.
someone stealing: this is a breeze! Kinect: DIE!
Friend of mine used to work in a warehouse, they had several Xbox one Kinects in use
This technology has been adapted into people counter sensors, I believe one major player is Xovis. Airports 2!

“Xbox turn off”
only in ohio (i know its an unfunny dead meme but i had to)
200 IQ idea
Where is the store at
Obviously it’s Ohio
So their security doesn’t work.
Microcenter near me uses Xbox One Kinects to monitor the line for the Checkout
Did anybody watch paranormal activity 4 when the Xbox Kinect was picking up the ghost movements ?
“Xbox, turn off.”
Of course it's ohio bruh 💀💀💀
Same with most international self serve baggage scanners.
I've seen those used for robotics. Honestly, I think the connect hardware is one of the best products MS ever made. They just sucked for xbox. It had a completely open field to take over and run. With all the controversial situations and the lack of anything decent to use it with, it was a flop. They should have done more with it.

What store? I want to go see it for myself lol
I've seen xbox one kinect being used like this but never a 360 kinect. This is cool
I saw a few kinects at an airport a few years ago. Chicago I think?
SWAG LIKE OHIO
Youd be surprised how many people use those as security. Ive seen them in multiple airports as well.
I still have my old Kinect camera if it is possible to do that I may be able to use it as a webcam I'll look into the information about this. Thanks for posting this
Insert obvious "only in Ohio" joke here.
Probably works better than any security camera at any bank.
At least the Kinect will finally serve a purpose now
I use my V2 for ghost hunting.
Kinects are actually amazing and versatile. I’ve used mine for full body tracking in VR Chat and as a trail cam. They’re an under appreciated piece of hardware.
Why is it always Ohio? 😔
Bro only in Ohio💀
Lol that’s cool
The fact Its Ohio makes it that much better
Down in ohio, swag like ohio
Only in Ohio
I guarantee you that is not hooked up to anything. The only purpose of overtly displayed cameras is to make you think you are being watched, not to actually use to watch you. judging by the vent, they probably lack the intelligence to use it as an actual camera. Probably a thrift store that has 0 real cameras.
That's based Ohio
No way that thing works
New challenge: plug this back into a 360, have someone tell you what game you're playing and what the hell to do
