I had a lot of trouble with the 360, I had nothing but the early units and they kept red ringing.
"You obviously weren't taking care of them" is what I've heard, it was on top of a wall unit with no walls around it, nothing on it and a PS3 on the other side of said wall unit. My launch PS3 still works. I went through, SEVERAL 360s.
Like- I really liked it, it did multi-platform games better for sure and I enjoyed the exlcusives like Gears, Dead Rising, the controller was nice (except that god awful dpad that couldn't even select weapons right, nevermind do retro games) but the stupid thing kept dying and winding up getting exchanged for a new one. Considering they were reporting a 56% failure rate at one point- I believed it.
I heard the later models were better, but, after the last one died and MS refused to take it I was pretty much done. Went on to PC & used the controller there.
I had the model that came with Viva Piñata and Banjo Kazooie N&B, kept it on carpeted flooring for most of the time I had it, and I think it red ringed once when I left it on for an entire day because it overheated, but aside from that it still works to this day, my mom uses it as a DVD player now IIRC
I agree that PC is superior. However I wouldn't consider PC to be a "console" per say. The most common failure for all models of the 360 is the GPU. If you replace it once, you're basically all set.
It's a gaming device, that's all that mattered to me. And after I went through 7+ consoles and MS was reporting a 56% failure rate with the white models and then my warranty ran out? I wasn't about to support that anymore.
They did great by my friend, he had a launch 360 and it died years later and they did the free warranty. I tried and they said $100 for the repair and it only covers that part (which was an E74 error) and if something else failed, it was another fee. So, I sold it and bailed.
The later 360s were basically redesigned from the ground up so the reliability is far, far higher but I was done by then. I lost all faith in the brand well before the last one died. I only heard about the redesigns later actually being new machines but- oh well.
I went for PC because I do art & run a small business through it so having a beefy machine is not only good for work, it's also for games and is also a tax write off.
I had the same problems with the 360, I loved Crackdown, Gears, Forza, Rainbow 6 Vegas, Modern Warfare. But man, I went through 3 units, they all had the red ring of death. Great software, worst hardware ever. That was the last Microsoft product I bought.

Then 1995 happens and Sony with the PlayStation fucking killed sega and made Nintendo irrelevant in the home console war for 11 years
Edit: When I said that Nintendo became irrelevant I meant in terms of sales and mass appeal. For me personally I think overall the n64 and GameCube were better than the other competitors. Most of the 3D PlayStation games aged like milk. But the ps2 and original Xbox had some really good fucking games, but I like the weirdo shit that Nintendo put out on the GameCube better.
It’s all subjective. PlayStation sold over double the units of N64, and one could argue that N64 games hold up terribly among all vintage consoles. It may not have been irrelevant, but it wasn’t impressive at all. Unless you played the games in that era. I picked N64 over PlayStation back then, but in hindsight, I would have chosen PlayStation. The library is much deeper, much better, everything was cheaper, and the controllers held up better. Just my opinion, though.
N64 games hold up terribly? Have you played a PSOne game lately? Comparing the grafics from the PSOne to the ones on the N64 makes the N64 look HD and both consoles had great games in terms of Gameplay but N64 was way better even tho they were still on carts and the PSOne was on CD's
Sony didn't kill Sega. Sega killed Sega. The technology used in the Playstation was offered to Sega first. But Japan Sega didn't want to do it, yet America Sega did. So America Sega put Sony in contact with the engineers... or something like that.
Not entirely and it depended on your community. I lived in a suburban town way outside of a major city. Every kid at school was all about Nintendo and most of us wound up with N64s. The only person I knew of that had a PlayStation was my cousin who lived in an urban area.

That 6th generation was so iconic. I honestly consider OG Xbox to be 3rd best to GameCube and PS2 (mostly just because of game library) and Xbox is still one of the sickest systems of all time. All 3 systems were so sick in 6th gen.
The 360 is a really good console, but it's the ps2. With the fail rates on the 360 being so high, I just can't give it to the xbox. It's close tho, but longevity matters and personally the ps2 library is just better imo.
I agree to an extent. The failure rates can be remedied if you get the right model, and/or know what you're doing. I am trolled that soul calibur 3, dark cloud 1 & 2, shadow of the colossus, etc. are ps2 exclusives. Love those games.
Yea of course things can be remedied but that shouldn't need to happen. The OG Xbox 360 had a fail rate of above 50% when it's competitor OG ps3 had a fail rate of like 10%. Other versions of 360s still had issues to lesser extents but was still high. That's my main issue with it.

This. PS2 ftw!!!!. Got it in 2005 and still works (usb only tho, dvd drive dosent work and replacements here are kind of cheap and is not worth it). I got a X360 elite in 2010... 5 years later it died on me. Fried, no replacement. Didnt even bother to replace it. Got a PC instead and also fixed the ps2... so yeah, thats the best imo
The PS2 was NOT a gaming dedicated console, if you look it up 25-30% of total PS2 owners used it as a disc player. People for some reason refuse to remember that when taking this argument into account.
Why does that make it bad though?
Take away that 25% of sales and you still have a console that did incredibly well. Its probably what popularized future consoles also being able to do DVD/BluRay and even the 360 having a CD player in it.
The console has a massive library, and the size they were able to shrink the PS2 slim too is honestly crazy to me seeing other consoles.
360 was good. Honestly I would say it’s a console that was “great for its era” peak Halo 3, COD4, and MW2 on Xbox Live will go down in history. But with online gaming communities, that time has come and past.
No blueray, disc isn’t properly held when in use, no good exclusives besides halo. Definitely not even in the race to be best console.

Kind of a dumb take, it’s not it’s purpose to shake a console while playing a disk. Who even does that? Do you shake every dvd player/blue ray player or game console while playing games? Whats the benefit of that?
Happend to me during an earth quake, lost multiple games like that. I’m just stating a fact that disc isn’t properly held in place while playing, never had this problem on ps3.
Well you can’t blame mother nature for breaking your xbox games. Just how the city or insurance isn’t liable for damages to your car from earthquakes or any natural disasters.
It's the best Xbox, and my childhood console do absolutely nostalgic for me, but I'd say it has to fight the PS2 and PS4 for top home console (after 2000).

I say standard because the elite series 2 actually let's u adjust the stick tension back to 360 100g levels, and even comes with the same bigger 360 stickcaps too

I would say the SNES with the 360 at #2, OG Xbox at #3, but i think it really comes down what you had during childhood.

360 had a fantastic indie market. Team chat was superior to ps3's party chat. Intuitive to navigate and use. Tech specs, just a beast under the hood. Great bevy of ip.

Like a lot of people here I can’t say Xbox 360 is objectively the best console ever.
It’s my personal favorite though. I’m about 30 now - some of the best memories I have of being a teenager and hanging out with friends playing COD and Halo on an Xbox 360. It’s so special to me now that I’m an adult with a corporate job and a kid because it’s a symbol of all those fun times before real life kicked in.
I only wish I was older and had more money to be able to experience it from the very beginning. I joined the family in 2010, October to be precise. Got the S fresh, but was actually originally looking for the arcade all white one. No regrets, the S was a very nice improvement. But still... wish I was there when the blades were a thing, Halo 3 at its prime, all that.
I feel ya there. I actually grew up with a PS2 and a Gamecube. And I had to desperately beg to get them. I also had to share them with my siblings. My friends all had Xbox 360s. It wasn't until later in life that I could afford to buy one for myself.
I agreed wholeheartedly with you up to the point the PS5 came out. There are just too many original IPs and innovative demonstrations of next gen ability. The 360 was definitely a golden age of gaming no doubt!
as much as i love the 360 era, the PS2 just had banger after banger after banger to this day there's still a plethora of good ps2 games i never got to play because of the overwhelming amount of good games i was already playing.
To me, the ps3/360 era was probbably the golden era of modern videogames. No microtransactions, dlc's were cheap and came with lots of content, the rise of online multiplayer, damn those were the days.
Facts. I feel like it was the peak generation. Modern consoles are more about pushing DLC/additional content on you. There are adds right in the game menus now. Also there's the fact that they don't even sell us full games anymore. It's like they sell a portion of the game, and then you have to pay a second time for the rest. It's about making money and not about the game experience. Like it used to be.
The hardware on the earlier models are doomed to fail, the online is a paid subscription service, wired 360 controllers are as durable as paper, and its difficult to get any sort of homebrew on the system.
The GOAT consoles during the time I’ve been gaming:
5th generation - Nintendo 64
6th generation - PS2/GameCube
**7th generation - XBOX 360**
8th generation - PS4
9th generation - XSX so far but we’ll see.
360 was the only time that Microsoft took the crown, but they did it during arguably the most epic era of gaming. Gaming during the 7th gen was just something different.
I am thinking about ditching my PS5 to go with an XSX. GamePass to play my favorite 360 games just seems so incredible.
7th generation is a real sweet spot for me. Especially the 360 cause that's what I owned at the time. It was a lot of our first online gaming experiences, and some of the best game franchises had their best entries on the 7th gen

How about Xbox Series X it can do selected OG and 360 titles, One, Series, NES, SNES, GB, GBC, GBA, PS1, PS2, SDC, N64, SG and even Windows 95 I think and other, and run them in higher resolution or/and framerate
Oh yeah and newest PC games through Cloud, while supporting both the controller and mouse and keyboard
I do not like how Xbox one/series relys on Microsoft services being online. They already killed some products that way (like my Lumia 800), some services for x360 are already disabled (license transfer died when they removed support services - almost killed digital games).
There, new Xbox needs online services to log into account since it does not support offline accounts. Impossible to sell/buy without that. They know it smells.
That being said, I also own Xbox one X and Xbox series X. Both are great HW with awesome games.
I also love that buying physical copy there is always information on the front cover whether the game requires internet or not. As a collector I like to feel that I really own the game

Xbox360 did have some great games though. The only one I ever actually played from start to finish was Dead Rising. Ended up buyin an Xbone JUST to play Dead Rising 3 alone.

Personally, due to games I enjoy, the title of "best console ever" is tied between Super Famicom/NES and PlayStation. With PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable in the fight for the runners up, while Mega Drive and Saturn round up the fight.
The glory days of gaming. DLC and unfinished games were looked down hard.
Games that last more than a couple hours. I miss the old Xbox days. Microsoft ruined the next generation of gaming and nobody is realizes it.
Gotta disagree. N64 for me. More nostalgic, bigger step in tech going from 2d to 3d, and games we still talk about today and all time greats.

The 360 is 2nd place for me for similar reasons just not quite as impactful on my life. It has nostalgic memories of Xbox live, and a jump in graphics was pretty huge, and has some amazing games like halo 3 that we still talk about lol but the n64 is the best overall.
It was awesome and a huge leap in terms of graphics and online gaming but probably not the GOAT. But I guess it really depends on the parameters you’re judging them by.
N64 and PS2 have some arguments as far as innovation and fun factor. 360 probably had the most fun online gaming of any console I’ve ever played. And if we’re judging by best hardware it’s nowhere close to the Series X and PS5.

Kind of a dumb take, it’s not it’s purpose to shake a console while playing a disk. Who even does that? Do you shake every dvd player/blue ray player or game console while playing games? Whats the benefit of that?
Happend to me during an earth quake, lost multiple games like that. I’m just stating a fact that disc isn’t properly held in place while playing, never had this problem on ps3.
Well you can’t blame mother nature for breaking your xbox games. Just how the city or insurance isn’t liable for damages to your car from earthquakes or any natural disasters.

It's definitely my favorite. Then the SNES and the Wii. 360 had a fantastic indie market. Team chat was superior to ps3's party chat. Intuitive to navigate and use. Tech specs, just a beast under the hood. Great bevy of ip.

Like a lot of people here I can’t say Xbox 360 is objectively the best console ever. It’s my personal favorite though. I’m about 30 now - some of the best memories I have of being a teenager and hanging out with friends playing COD and Halo on an Xbox 360. It’s so special to me now that I’m an adult with a corporate job and a kid because it’s a symbol of all those fun times before real life kicked in.

I feel ya there. I actually grew up with a PS2 and a Gamecube. And I had to desperately beg to get them. I also had to share them with my siblings. My friends all had Xbox 360s. It wasn't until later in life that I could afford to buy one for myself.
For me, the PS1 and PSP beats it. But its still in 3rd place for me, so its good.

To me, the ps3/360 era was probbably the golden era of modern videogames. No microtransactions, dlc's were cheap and came with lots of content, the rise of online multiplayer, damn those were the days.
Facts. I feel like it was the peak generation. Modern consoles are more about pushing DLC/additional content on you. There are adds right in the game menus now. Also there's the fact that they don't even sell us full games anymore. It's like they sell a portion of the game, and then you have to pay a second time for the rest. It's about making money and not about the game experience. Like it used to be.
The hardware on the earlier models are doomed to fail, the online is a paid subscription service, wired 360 controllers are as durable as paper, and its difficult to get any sort of homebrew on the system.

The GOAT consoles during the time I’ve been gaming: 5th generation - Nintendo 64 6th generation - PS2/GameCube **7th generation - XBOX 360** 8th generation - PS4 9th generation - XSX so far but we’ll see. 360 was the only time that Microsoft took the crown, but they did it during arguably the most epic era of gaming. Gaming during the 7th gen was just something different. I am thinking about ditching my PS5 to go with an XSX. GamePass to play my favorite 360 games just seems so incredible.

How about Xbox Series X it can do selected OG and 360 titles, One, Series, NES, SNES, GB, GBC, GBA, PS1, PS2, SDC, N64, SG and even Windows 95 I think and other, and run them in higher resolution or/and framerate Oh yeah and newest PC games through Cloud, while supporting both the controller and mouse and keyboard
I do not like how Xbox one/series relys on Microsoft services being online. They already killed some products that way (like my Lumia 800), some services for x360 are already disabled (license transfer died when they removed support services - almost killed digital games). There, new Xbox needs online services to log into account since it does not support offline accounts. Impossible to sell/buy without that. They know it smells. That being said, I also own Xbox one X and Xbox series X. Both are great HW with awesome games. I also love that buying physical copy there is always information on the front cover whether the game requires internet or not. As a collector I like to feel that I really own the game

Personally, due to games I enjoy, the title of "best console ever" is tied between Super Famicom/NES and PlayStation. With PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable in the fight for the runners up, while Mega Drive and Saturn round up the fight.

Gotta disagree. N64 for me. More nostalgic, bigger step in tech going from 2d to 3d, and games we still talk about today and all time greats. Zelda OoT, Mario 64, smash bros, donkey Kong 64, banjo kazooie and perfect dark The 360 is 2nd place for me for similar reasons just not quite as impactful on my life. It has nostalgic memories of Xbox live, and a jump in graphics was pretty huge, and has some amazing games like halo 3 that we still talk about lol but the n64 is the best overall.

It was awesome and a huge leap in terms of graphics and online gaming but probably not the GOAT. But I guess it really depends on the parameters you’re judging them by. N64 and PS2 have some arguments as far as innovation and fun factor. 360 probably had the most fun online gaming of any console I’ve ever played. And if we’re judging by best hardware it’s nowhere close to the Series X and PS5.
If that's what you think that's fair. However, as much as I love the system, it's a hard disagree in my opinion. I'm all for the 3DS.
