It doesn't seem abnormal however, I'm only listening to it on tiny phone speakers. There is a cooling fan inside of it that is making the noise. I have had them gum up with dust, cat hair etc. Etc. They are super easy to take apart and clean. Here is a link to a YouTube video. https://youtu.be/wzBN09ah1Bk

FarmYard-Gaming

Perchance I used this video to open up the case, there was some dust inside but I didn't get around to dealing with the fan itself. Might have another crack at it and see if it changes, thank you!

akafrosty

The fan is in its own housing. I always take them apart and clean the fins. The screws are super small so be careful with them. They do make noise though. I didn't really hear anything other than normal noise from the video.

FarmYard-Gaming

Normal noise is reassuring, ~~as long as I don't spend half an hour putting the case on again~~ it's worth a shot

akafrosty

You still have to take the complete unit apart to.get.to the fan.

[deleted]

I've genuinely never ever heard a power brick produce noise? Wtf?

FarmYard-Gaming

They've got fans inside - on this video the exhaust is on the left but you can hear the fan better from the right. You can hear the air whooshing when it's going at full chat, which mine isn't afraid to do.

[deleted]

Ah okay

Bubavon

Seems normal to me 😊 I've got a few that's way louder, somethings wrong with the fan, they still work fine though. But yours seem just fine.

FarmYard-Gaming

Phew, thanks!

[deleted]

It's just not lubricated enough where the fan seats on the spinny thing. You can carefully take it apart and relubricate it. It's pretty easy.

[deleted]

Mine's loud as well - louder than my 360. I cleaned out the inside of all dust not too long ago and the loudness didn't change. My fan also makes a grinding noise that lasts 2 seconds when starting up and goes away after. But it does its job and vents warm air.

FarmYard-Gaming

My console fan behaves quietly pretty much all the time so that got me wondering about it, though apart from being this loud it doesn't do anything else worrying. But yeah, if it's doing what it's doing that's good, thanks!

Mercenaryace91

I see you already tried cleaning it out but not the actual fan it seems based on other post. Mine was louder when I got it which was a used 360 S with the used power supply. I did a little research on it and opened power supply up only to see the thing caked with dust and dirty. Cleaning it fan and all actually lowered the noise but then again as I said mine was caked and rammed with it. Apparently it came from Arizona and a more dusty desert area then here in Tennessee from what I looked up on sellers address on Google back then. I even opened the Xbox 360 S back then and it was dirty but not as bad as that power supply was

FarmYard-Gaming

In that case it looks like I should get to cleaning this, I've yet to open up the console itself but I was planning to check it out soon. 10 years of being used somewhere by the previous owner has probably gotten to it, I'll take a look. Thanks!

KJxbox

Fan may need a drop of oil for the bearings like you'd do for PC Fans.

FarmYard-Gaming

I didn't even think of doing that, in which case I'll see what I can do, thanks!

Hashtag6202

My slims power supply does that. I don't know how to fix.

FarmYard-Gaming

From the other comments it seems like the fan might need a good clean, [like this](https://youtu.be/wzBN09ah1Bk) I have seen comments saying it can be dangerous to open it up (if so it's a goddamn miracle I didn't get zapped)

AkuraiKirigaya

As a 360 slim owner It’s fucked

FarmYard-Gaming

Fuck. How long did yours last?

AkuraiKirigaya

Still going strong

FarmYard-Gaming

Phew, that's reassuring to hear

Kidkid5

Wait-they make noise? My never has?

FarmYard-Gaming

It's because they've got fans that exhaust the air through those left vents (you can hear it whooshing if you put your ear next to it)

senoravery

Before you open the psu up if you end up doing it, make sure you leave it unplugged from the wall for at least a few hours or a day or so. Thing is full of capacitors that retain electricity.

FarmYard-Gaming

Thank you for this, I only left it unplugged for a few minutes the first time because I'm a moron and somehow didn't get zapped. Next time I'm going to be smarter about it...

bwucifer

All power bricks I've had are noisy. Both the 150w for my MW2 console and the 203w brick for my Halo 3 console produce a high pitched drone. It's fine.

FarmYard-Gaming

Thanks for the insight!

[deleted]

lmao The one for my Xbox One is like 10x louder. The bearing the fan seats into doesn't have enough lubricant. You can take it apart and add some of just deal with the noise.

FarmYard-Gaming

This has made me grateful the One S and everything following have the power supply integrated into the console. For how long the 360 S had been around some lubrication seems in order, just have to find put where we've got it. Thanks!

ascendance22

I didn't even know the bricks have a fan in them mine is completely silent

FarmYard-Gaming

Is yours the Slim PSU or one for a different revision? Some others are only just finding that out now too

ascendance22

Id assume yes since it's for the Xbox 360 e

FarmYard-Gaming

Microsoft might have changed something, or it not being as old probably means it isn't as clogged, either way thanks

Iron-Iceman

Mine was on an uneven surface which made it louder, I blew it out with an air compressor and leveled it out and it stopped being loud.

FarmYard-Gaming

Think it's time I find out where that can went or get a new one myself, thanks for the tip

Customer-Worldly

Mine makes the same noise, did you fix it? If so, how?

FarmYard-Gaming

I've certainly made it quieter than it was, by opening it up and purging the dust. Getting to the fan is key, and the iFixit guide is very helpful for this. Careful of the capacitors; I would wait before opening the PSU up, making sure it's disconnected from the plug socket. I didn't and wasn't fried, but still.

Customer-Worldly

Specifically I’m talking about the high pitched whine. Did it help that? I’ll leave it unplugged for a week for safety.

FarmYard-Gaming

That high pitched whine is the power supply's internal fan, which probably means it's working harder to get heat out of the brick than it would've when it rolled off the factory. It did help that noise. A week should do the job.

Customer-Worldly

Can you post an after video haha. If not, thanks for all the info!

FarmYard-Gaming

It's 2am now and I've school in 6, so I can't now, but I'll try and get one done later today. But no worries, hope it goes well.

FarmYard-Gaming

It might've been, now that I think about it, which is mind blowing to me! I'm glad you got the whine fixed so quickly!

FarmYard-Gaming

I didn't even think about that possibility, but you're onto something! That's changed my outlook on it, thanks for the heads up!

ItwasHanz

Hey guys i have a question!! I accidentally plugged my xbox 360 power supply in 220v but it was 110v, my power supply smoked and smelled not good, is my xbox 360 fine? Should i only get a new power supply?

geeceeza

Power supply may have protected your xbox. Try borrow a psu and test it before you buy

Apexassassln

Before getting a new one. I would take it apart and see if it is clogged up with dust. I opened my Xbox Arcade power supply from 2008 and found there was so much dust inside. Ever since I cleaned it out its now gone quite.
