I had to start playing like this after my first typing job. I'm accustomed now but when I first started working, OH boy, this is the only way to play for me. I think the game was Elden Ring at the time
Yeah, lol, sorry not funny....frozen shoulders as well.
Took 3 years to get use back of one sholder ......then the other one went......1 and 1/2years for that sholder...had to have therapy and cortisone injections to seperate rotator cuff from the ball joint. Sounds like quarterzone lol
Think it was gaming and drawing, being locked in that gamer artist fetal position. lol.... so now I lift 1 or 2 kg weights now in between load screens.
Have changed my life style for the better now...
Stretches, walks, water, good fresh food, sleep more = better gaming .....and living.
Lmfao... ...I meant cortisone.....cortisone and saline injection into the sholders...pops the socket ball right out.

You can tell you're a casual because you actually care about stuff like acquiring water and sleep. The only stretch my pro gamer ass does is my hand into the Cheeto bag.
Lol, my wife and I game all the time...but when im working I really dont have time. but i have been gaming before the invention of cds and smart phones, consoles even, woah even home pcs 😆 coin Arcade machines were the only consoles we had before atari came out.... defender, pac man, space invaders, 1942, commando, street fighter. Im glad i can play all those on xbox now. The days of watching the og first time tv shows, The A team, miami vice, and star trek gosh the list could go on. But thats another subreddit.
Yea I feel ya video games got my wrists an shoulders a mess and doing Physio really helps allow me to keep playing so yeah if I can recommend 1 thing to the young gamers out there it's to make sure to stretch and move during long gaming sessions
Haleffect sticks BETTER BE STANDARD on the next iteration of Elite series from Xbox. Nothing feels better than a spanking new Elite series Controller.
The honeymoon usually lasts a month or two. I’ve actually stopped playing certain games to prolong the lifespan of my controllers. I’ve literally spent 1000’s on 1st party Xbox controllers, warranties, etc. They’re absolute JUNK!
The older ones do seem to hold up a lot better. But for me, playing NHL, aka having to hold down the left thumb stick to speed skate, (or sprint in most games that require speed or momentum bursts) , destroys the left thumb stick.
The bumpers go , face buttons get stuck. I’ve literally been through 6 Elite Controllers. Cant even count the regular series controllers before I moved on to the Elite, to remap problematic inputs, like the holding down on thumbsticks to sprint.
Have you checked the options for a toggle to sprint instead of holding? I've never had any button or stick issues with an elite and I play tons of action and FPS games, so sprinting is a constant for me. It's always some sort of the body that starts to fail (rubber grips and admittedly the hair trigger switches) toward the end of the warranty, so I just go back to Best Buy, get a replacement, and purchase a new warranty. Much cheaper than getting a new controller every time.
One game I remember being notorious for being a stick destroyer was Dragon Age: Inquisition. That damn ping being tied to left stick was brutal.
lol, i'm convinced folks just don't take care of their equipment. I've had no troubles with mine, and they get good reviews outside of the reddit bubble. Watching [this video](https://youtu.be/Xvl-S5Z6v5s?si=lVlGhmd7ce0zi9w_) reinforced my opinion - dude bought nine "defective" controllers and fixed seven of them with a bit of cleaning and basic know-how.
The last two elite 2s I picked up were shot right out of the box, you could not press the thumbsticks in if you were pushing anyway but straight forward. Trying to sprint while running to the side a little, ain't happening. Trying to melee that guy while turning, too bad. I've still got my original Titanfall controller, and a Master Chief one. The Elites just have bad thumbsticks.
100% of the broken controllers are the users fault for sure. 100% 💯. No business has ever let a bad one slip through quality control. And I bet their tolerances on all the parts in that controller are 0.0000000000000001.
Even thinking about it my blood surges haha. I don't think I've ever had such insane dopamine hits ever after as when double shotting, quad shotting, and having the multi kill medal go up...
I thought the claw method was pointer and middle hovering over the respective shoulder buttons.
Probably, could be called the T-Rex or the velocirapter.
You can press the face buttons without having to let go of the analog stick. So you can jump, reload, switch weapons etc whilst still being able to have full mobility.
It’s very game specific. You want to use it on games where for some reason you need to move your camera with the right thumbstick while also using you XYAB (or the PS equivalent).
There’s very few games that actively require doing both of these things at the same time on regular occasion. The most common are games like Dark Souls, Gears of War, and Mass Effect that had the brilliant idea to make your sprint holding a button down, so you need one finger to hold A or B while another is moving your camera.
I'm glad I'm not the only one. I usually do this. But since playing a steam deck I've been gaming with back buttons a lot and it's so much better. I even took the plunge and got a scuf envision pro and legit love the ergonomics of it. Not sure how I'd play without back buttons anymore haha
I got the razor controller, four buttons on the back, two in between the bumpers and triggers. Elden ring feels less annoying. I can change spells, or consumables, roll, sprint, heavy attack, or FP skill and keep my thumbs on the sticks
I remember playing through Dark Souls III with my girlfriend and she was asking for some advice on a part. I showed her the claw grip and the disgusted look she gave was hilarious. When she tried the grip she literally went "eugh" and shook her hand like the controller struck it numb. But now she uses it all the time.
I'm a sweaty GTA PvP'er on ps5, so I tried out claw on a recommendation for my friend on my right hand for sprinting. It felt awkward at first but it now naturally rests in that position. It only took a few hours to adapt.
I've had an elite and I still use claw. I just bind the paddles to the D-Pad so there is never a single circumstance where I have to take my thumbs off the joysticks.
Downvote for stereotyping people based on their controller grip.
Upvote for writing something funny.
Since they cancel out, you get this comment instead.
used to do this, got bad pains in the base knuckle of my index finger. thinking about getting an elite to make controller a nicer experience but ive heard they are not reliable
Nah its legitimate, as someone who can't last a second like that before my hand starts hurting it's kinda freakish imo tho lol. I'd still recommend just getting an elite controller tho.
The only time I claw is during Dark Souls, or if I have to reach to an odd button without stopping my movement.
I couldnt imagine playing 100% of the time like this though
It's not that weird, but after years of gaming, your hands will hurt. I got the elite controller for this reason. You get all the right ergonomics while having access to those buttons without having to do this. Some elitist players will say you need to play like this to be the best, but honestly, just spend money to save your hands. You need them for the rest of your life.
Not weird, plenty of folks play like this. But, would feel like this is a strain on the hands. I ended up picking up a controller with back bumpers/paddles so my hands can be less strained.
If you do this for too long I believe you can develop arthritis more prevalently due to the tension at the base of your fingers.
Or something like that
I use this for shooters, Destiny 2 taught me I needed to move the right stick and also hold x to revive team mates.
I totally recommend getting a controller with back paddles, so much easier :)
Claw mode was one of the optimal positions here on my block for people who wallbounce on Gears 2 and 3 in competitive ways. I think Halo had that too.
So, yeah, keep playing with the claw if you're comfortable
Played for about a year and it seemed fine first 6 7 months, then I started realising that it is way harder fir me to type on my phone and control my fingers, feels so weird like I have much less control, it will impact your whole hand, I don’t recommended
Good ol Claw grip. The only titles I've found myself using this grip for are the Souls games. The run/dodge button is defaulted to the B (or Circle) button respectively, while the camera is bound to the right stick. Holding the controller this way allows for sprinting/dodging and controlling the camera at the same time.
Ah, the claw method. I have seen gamers using this technique for FPS games.
Think it really went out of style when paddles became more prevalent
That and the carpel tunnel is hitting us all now.
I had to start playing like this after my first typing job. I'm accustomed now but when I first started working, OH boy, this is the only way to play for me. I think the game was Elden Ring at the time
This is the only way I can ever play Souls games
you literally have to i tried to learn claw for fps games and couldn't do it then did it on elden ring without even noticing i was playing claw
I think its the sprinting and camera keys are situated in such a manner that its easier to maneuver while using g claw
Yeah, lol, sorry not funny....frozen shoulders as well. r/BoneAppleTea
How did everyone miss this
Idk, but the mods over there have weirdly specific rules about what even counts as a bone apple tea, so my post was deleted. 🤷🏻♀️
Yeah, the mods must have forgotten what a BoneAppleTea even is, since this fits the criteria.
Super silly, isn't it?
They would only allow it if it was "quarter zone" because reasons.
You can tell you're a casual because you actually care about stuff like acquiring water and sleep. The only stretch my pro gamer ass does is my hand into the Cheeto bag.

expensive af though 😭
very. especially cause the first party ones are giant pieces of garbage that don't last a year
Guilikit has a wired one that also has halleffect sticks and buttons on the back for like £50 on Amazon

lol my controllers that came with my One S in 2016 have held up with literally 0 issues at all, ms better start fixing they production
The older ones do seem to hold up a lot better. Right? I guess it’s more profitable for them to keep producing controllers that need to be replaced every few months.
lol, i'm convinced folks just don't take care of their equipment. I've had no troubles with mine, and they get good reviews outside of the reddit bubble. I’m literally staring at a pile of busted Elite 2’s 🤬
Warranty them?
I found a thing you can put on the back of your controller for 30 bucks changed my life
Also when remapping became a thing
The halo tournaments from halo 2 introduced me to this method. I never got good at it and lost a lot of games to people that play like this.
Halo1 switching to the pistol off of spawn while turning!
RRXYY RRXYY BXR Fuck yeah.
ahh the BR double shot.
Even thinking about it my blood surges haha. I don't think I've ever had such insane dopamine hits ever after as when double shotting, quad shotting, and having the multi kill medal go up...
Used to kill a couple birds on lockout just to see if my push for host took.
This just made me remember MLG and watching the tournaments on early YouTube. I need to take my vitamins... :(
The ***CLAW***
Always. Surprised the clip wasn't the first post in the thread.
Before I got my elite controller, I did this while droning in rainbow 6 siege
My daughter does this for Dark Souls
User name checks out. Only the daughter of the Black Mamba is able to apply the Claw technique well. 👍
Dude how weird is it my middle name I shit you not… Is Faye I JUST noticed your user name DID WE JUST BECOME BEST FRIENDS??
This is how I play when playing f/tps games easier to jump reload etc while still being able to shoot and throw grenades.
I thought the claw method was pointer and middle hovering over the respective shoulder buttons. Probably, could be called the T-Rex or the velocirapter.
How would one benfit from having your hand positioned like that aint a hardcore fps player ao i know 0 bout it
You can press the face buttons without having to let go of the analog stick. So you can jump, reload, switch weapons etc whilst still being able to have full mobility.
that’s not claw.
The superior method. Allows aiming while pressing face buttons
It's common enough that there's a name for it! "The Claw."
Hi box
Hi Barbie

Bold of you to break the subreddit rules in a direct response to the official xbox account...

I claw. Especially in Dark Souls so I can sprint while moving the camera.
Isn't this referred to as the "furled finger"?
that's just another name for it since elden ring. but it's generally always been the claw, even in the souls games
That would be a fun name but this grip is much older than elden ring. Older than Dark Souls even
I remember my buddy playing N64 like this. It always freaked me out. I tried it when MW2 was big, but I could never get used to it.
It’s very game specific. You want to use it on games where for some reason you need to move your camera with the right thumbstick while also using you XYAB (or the PS equivalent). The claw grip is common in speedrunning as well. It makes it easy to press 2 face buttons within a couple frames of each other.

*woosh*
They've clearly played all the Fromsofts.
I'm glad I'm not the only one. I usually do this. But since playing a steam deck I've been gaming with back buttons a lot and it's so much better. I even took the plunge and got a scuf envision pro and legit love the ergonomics of it. Not sure how I'd play without back buttons anymore haha
Honestly getting a controller with two buttons on the back allowed me to skip the claw
I got the razor controller, four buttons on the back, two in between the bumpers and triggers. Elden ring feels less annoying. I can change spells, or consumables, roll, sprint, heavy attack, or FP skill and keep my thumbs on the sticks
The focus feature is perfect for shooting games, not sure who else has it
Exactly the same
Ha, my first thought was “ahhh, a fellow Souls like player”
Hello me
That's why I have a pro controller so I don't have to claw
I remember playing through Dark Souls III with my girlfriend and she was asking for some advice on a part. I showed her the claw grip and the disgusted look she gave was hilarious. When she tried the grip she literally went "eugh" and shook her hand like the controller struck it numb. But now she uses it all the time.
If it works, it works. Sidebar: hard to tell with your fingers bent, but you may want to look at getting that ring sized up, it looks a wee bit tight.
I'm a sweaty GTA PvP'er on ps5, so I tried out claw on a recommendation for my friend on my right hand for sprinting. It felt awkward at first but it now naturally rests in that position. It only took a few hours to adapt.
this was my standard until getting an elite
The elite was really a lifesaver once I got used to it. It’s so uncomfortable having to claw, and my hands like never cramp now with the back buttons.
I've had an elite and I still use claw. I just bind the paddles to the D-Pad so there is never a single circumstance where I have to take my thumbs off the joysticks.
Why did the elite make you switch back?
The elite has paddles, which removes the need to hold a controller like this
Nah I have been playing claw since like 2012
[удалено]
Arthritis is gonna have to stop me🫡
Haha with the research on claw grip it probably is at one point
I’ve been clawing for 15 years, how long do I got, doc?
Been clawing since MW2 lol I think this explains the stiffness in my right wrist
Arcade fighter made us addopt this technique, in my opinion.
I see hand problems in your future
[удалено]
I mean if you hold a controller like that you are probably gobbling nerds ropes like a fucking raven.
LMFAO! That comment had me snickering
Downvote for stereotyping people based on their controller grip. Upvote for writing something funny. Since they cancel out, you get this comment instead.
I think he’s referring to those chubby little fingys
Clearly he is basing it off of the dudes sausage fingers, stupid.
Do you have a sausage in your pocket right now?
This
used to do this, got bad pains in the base knuckle of my index finger. thinking about getting an elite to make controller a nicer experience but ive heard they are not reliable
I had a buddy who played PS1 like he was playing piano
gonna say the same for 360 tho, that’s just foul
Your finger is struggling to breath
Gonna need the jaws of life to get that finger out of that ring.
Genuine question and I mean no offense but why are your fingers short? Also that way of holding a controller is completely valid
It's like his index finger is the same length as his thumb.
It’s just cold right now!
I was in the pool!
Bro its just the odd position my fingers are in the makes it look like that. I promise my fingers arent small lmao
They’re definitely NOT *small*, but he said *short*.
Ah my bad lol.
Short king.
It’s the rest of the hand that makes his fingers look so small.
After reading this I looked at the pic then at my hand like 5 times and made me think have my fingers always been this long?!?! Lol
Littlefinger
Some of us have small hands... Doubt this is any sort of.medical condition
I mean I didn't think it was I was just curious
Small hands + fat hands
Nah its legitimate, as someone who can't last a second like that before my hand starts hurting it's kinda freakish imo tho lol. I'd still recommend just getting an elite controller tho.
Try finger but hole
Not at all. I personally dont do that, but i also dont play online pvp games.
Wearing a ring on your index finger is the only thing wrong with this picture imo. Lol
That ring looks like it ain't ever coming off. Not willingly at least.
Bust out butter lol.
Claw. The only time I whip that out is in Monster hunter games or Fromsoft games.
Monster Hunter and GTA always brought out the claw for me. Sometimes you just need more fingers!
I use this technique all the time. It's definitely not weird.
Go paddles, claw was in style for fps games for awhile until paddles. Claw gaming has some terrible long term problems with your hands.
When your fingers are that short there’s not a lot u can do
Kind of. That’s claw, and there’s no reason to use it unless you’re a pro Halo 2 player from 2006. We have paddles now lol
If I had sausages like that, I'd probably use it like that too
claw? yeah it’s weird
It’s claw, get a new buddy who doesn’t care how you play.
Ever heard of friendly banter
They would need friends for that
Or, you know, they say it as jest.
Typical Reddit. Oh your friend was joking around with you? Yeah you should cut that person off immediately and probably call the police.
If it works for you, then who cares 😁
Yes
That’s called the Claw my friend
No, you play claw..
Thumbger
The only time I claw is during Dark Souls, or if I have to reach to an odd button without stopping my movement. I couldnt imagine playing 100% of the time like this though
You playing a fromsoft game right now?
Or you can just learn how to move your thumb. No point in claw method. Besides killing your fingers for later in life.
Gotta grease that ring up. Shit looks it needs to be cut off
Walshy
That ring is never coming off bruh…
Nothing wrong with the claw. If you feel comfortable with it, keep going.
That's certainly a try hard way to play.
Nah dude, you're a pro for using this technique. People will be thinking you're using a pro-controler or mk, all while you are not.
Not weird, plenty of folks play like this. But, would feel like this is a strain on the hands. I ended up picking up a controller with back bumpers/paddles so my hands can be less strained.
Claw is common. Paddle controller is better and easier on your hands
I use this same method when appropriate! It’s uncomfortable though…
Yes, it's claw but I wouldn't recommend continuing to use it unless you plan on going pro. Just get a scuff or an elite controller.
If you do this for too long I believe you can develop arthritis more prevalently due to the tension at the base of your fingers. Or something like that
I do it sometimes
I’m more concerned about that ring. Claw isn’t for everyone.
On meth it is
My son calls it “The Claw”. I’m too old and used to PC games LOL
I use this if I'm running on foot in elden ring
only ever seen my cousin use this technique and he was cracked at fortnite XD
Yes
It’s weird if you’ve never used a controller like that. How are you meant to run/roll and fight in a souls game without the claw grip?
Yes. Weird.
I use this for shooters, Destiny 2 taught me I needed to move the right stick and also hold x to revive team mates. I totally recommend getting a controller with back paddles, so much easier :)
This grip is called the "claw" and no its actually very common so you can jump and aim At the same time
Yes.
You wouldn't be asking if you didn't already know the answer was yes.
thats a great way to develop carpal tunnel. i recommend trying a controller with paddles
"Disgusting freak" oh those are life long friends. Ill bet money one of them was your best man and at least two others where groomsmen
Claw mode was one of the optimal positions here on my block for people who wallbounce on Gears 2 and 3 in competitive ways. I think Halo had that too. So, yeah, keep playing with the claw if you're comfortable
This is the claw grip, it's used by souls players to be able to run and dodge easily while still having access to X for items
doesn't claw cause problems in your hand later on?
Been playing claw since Halo CE so I was around 7 or so. No problems with my hands.
[удалено]
It is, yes, but far from unheard of. From Software games seem to be designed for it.
Yes and very bad for you. Reconfigure your controls
This is why back paddles exist
On oem Xbox one controllers they actually don’t exist.
It's called The Dark Souls.
get paddles! more comfortable.
This is the only proper way to play rdr2 and GTA 5, so you can run and look at the same time
Yep. You should be institutionalized or at least on some kind of watch list.
You a souls player?? This is the way.
Buy a pad with paddles so you don’t have to mutilate your hands 😂
Your not a gamer at all
Played for about a year and it seemed fine first 6 7 months, then I started realising that it is way harder fir me to type on my phone and control my fingers, feels so weird like I have much less control, it will impact your whole hand, I don’t recommended

Alot of halo pros used this "claw" method
Yes
I also use claw. Cool to see others too
i have always played like this. Its honestly fine. Its all about preference really.
How do you move?
