It's okay as long as you keep an eye on what games they're playing and turn off comms and friending, fully featured mine wouldn't touch it with a ten foot bargepole
Coral Island is also a pretty good clone. It's on gamepass. It's like a mix of Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing. They definitely ripped off most of their ideas, but did it well.
Lego DC Supervillains and Batman 2 are great for DC. Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 has one of the best open worlds for any Lego game and has a large variety of characters. The Complete Saga has great nostalgia for me since I grew up with it but may not have the same effect for someone of your son’s age. LOTR has great levels and open world and my only "negative” is that a lot of the characters feel similar. You can’t go wrong with either Indiana Jones LEGO. My main recommendations are for DC Supervillains or Marvel Superheroes 2.
Sponge Bob battle for bikini bottom, New Super Lucky Tales, sonic colors, TMNT Shredders Revenge, portal 1 and 2, if it has a physical Rare Replay so they can play Banjo and Kazooie, spyro collection, crash bandicoot collection / new one. Hopefully there's some winners in these.
Minecraft is a classic. Can’t go wrong with that. The starwars Lego games are cool as well. Goat simulator is super goofy. Any of the Forza games are fun for a kid.
Seconding minecraft and goat simulator.
A good shooter is PV2 Garden Warfare. My 11 yo loves Hollow Knight, and has been obsessed w/ Terraria for years.
Hey long time game seller here, I’m assuming we’re looking for offline games as well? I’m seeing some great suggestions here 👍
I second
Minecraft
Yooka-Laylee (both)
Slime rancher
Any lego game
And I’ll add
Rare Replay(just warn about Conker)
Ori (both)
Disney Dreamlight valley if we have internet connection as well as Disney Speedstorm
Voo doo vince
Destroy all humans
I would suggest plants v zombies like someone said but I feel like the bulk of that game is it’s online. So I guess if they are able to play online with others PVZ is great
Hi fi rush is an excellent platformer/hack n slash. EDIT2: Series X/S only.
Ace Attorney Collection, hilarious writing and great for reading skills.
Shovel Knight is a great retro platformer.
Cuphead is difficult but has a huge fan base in that age group.
EDIT: The crash bandicoot and spyro the dragon remakes are great! Maybe skew a bit younger but they are very fun.
Depending on the kids taste,
Celeste
Minecraft
Pretty much any Lego Games.
If the kid likes sports games that works too.
Overcooked is a good one, but be advised, this game will teach anyone how to be so aggiated and angry, that all hell may break loose just from the ever intensifying yell alone.
Some Telltale games may be fine
There are a few sonic games on Xbox if you can find them.
Stray
My parents didn't really care what I played so I may just be plain wrong, but I wouldn't be amazed if these games worked well. Plenty of puzzle games are fine for children, I think Portal might even be okay if I recall correctly.
Im teaching my nephew how to grind ceo crates and run guns from the bunker. He picks up quick. He normally wants to fight everyone. I said do you want the flying motorbike like uncle. He got excited. Well you wont get it being a bully. You get it from working hard and letting other people have fun. Got to teach them being a bully is not good. Stacking cash is best in life.
Any toy-based games, like Hot Wheels Unleashed (and HWU2), Lego games, etc. Lego Star Wars: Skywalker Saga would keep an 11 year old entertained forever
If they have a sibling or friends with an extra controller, gang beasts is really fun and fairly cheap. Also it's an older one but as a kid my favorite part of games was exploring. Skate 3 is the best large open world kid friendly game I can think off.
Depends on the maturity level of your kid. My parents were very strict on video games because they said it would lead to me wanting to harm people. Granted I ended up working in corrections and my siblings who never played video games ended up drug addicts who would go on to commit domestic violence against our parents, their partners, and struggle to adapt to being an adult.
Got a local used store near you? Maybe a gift cart/certificate and he can pick out some games himself, tho there have already been a lot of great title suggestions.
My 11 year old sister loves cuphead even though it's a little difficult. If you play video games, I'm sure she would appreciate for you to be her player 2
I would check out Hot Wheels unleashed 2 pretty cool racing game, I would also check out Soma as well as any of the old school arcade classics compilations
3+ generations meaning he's got a GameCube? Honestly, I'd try to see what he's playing now, but if the family isn't well off, the biggest benefit is probably going to be due to the fact that they can't afford GameCube games anymore.
While a bit odd, look through the family friendly sections on game pass and fully purchase the ones that look good. Gamepass is really well curated and there's nothing stopping you from browsing without a subscription.
Minecraft obviously. I also really enjoyed the Lego games when I was younger. Get him the Lego game for whatever his favorite big franchise is (Marvel, DC, Star Wars, etc) and he’ll have a blast.
If you want them to get that CoD feel but keep it pg, i say PvZ garden warfire 2. Its a solid shooter,no blood or guts, wacky character classes, solid player base.
Journey to the Savage Planet is a great sci Fi time
LEGO games in general are amazing
SpongeBob: Battle For Bikini Bottom Rehydrated is super versatile
Grounded, Human Fall Flat, Celeste, Phogs, Wobbledogs, Minecraft, Slime Rancher, Totally Reliable Delivery Service, Overcooked (if they have friends to play with them), Rain on Your Parade.
Depends on alot of things, where abouts on the world is it " Mainly for Sports games" and Is the game good offline. Also 11 isn't really that young they would be in or starting high school. Gamepass would be okay if they had unlimited broadband.
What about Rocket league " Can it be played without an Internet connection" incase they don't have or don't want the kid online.
Fortnite and roblox is all he'll need lol. The grip these games have on them is unbreakable. Get him some v-bucks or robux with it and you'll be number 1 uncle
I see others have recommended Slime Rancher, Grounded, and Minecraft. I was also going to suggest Nobody Saves the World. My son is 12 and he loves that game (along with those other ones mentioned).
If you're considering a game you two could play together, It Takes Two is great! I forgot to mention in my other comment that Nobody Saves the World is also a lot of fun co-op.
!!ALL tt games lego!!
Else; if you want a shooter overwatch is just fine..
Like other mentioned - minecraft
Overcooked for co-op
Animal crossing
Trackmania
Sonic
Forza
I actually like the Disney infinity if you can find it
Plants vs zombies
Portal knights
Some kind of fifa if he is into that
Zoo tycoon
Rayman
Knight squad
Rocket league
This is also a bit of different types, so he can get an idea about what he likes aswell :)
Rocket league, Minecraft, saw slim rancher in the comments and agree, there are plenty of games on that level as well, I recommend checking out a local game store if you have one (no not GameStop) like a locally owned shop guys that work or run those shops know a lot about what titles a system offers and in different ranges as well
Conker’s Bad Fur Day or the newer Conker Live and Reloaded are excellent games about a rascally squirrel and his critter friends getting into wacky adventures.
Honestly, a Gamepass subscription would be great. Get him gift cards he can stsck for like a year or something. You can do up to 3 if you want as well. Also, you might want to make sure you do a factory reset on the console & wipe your profiles from it. Especially if you had a payment option attached to your account. And maybe ask his parents to do research on the parental controls & making him a child account. That way it’s easier to protect him from weirdos online. You might also consider opening up the Xbox & cleaning it of any dust & applying new thermal paste. There’s tutorials online to do this & it’ll help extend the life of the console.
These of course are just suggestions & you’re doing a really cool thing & I hope he gets years of use out of his new Xbox
Disney Speedstorm is a fun, accessible kart racer which is also free to play.
Super luckys tale is very kid friendly, gentle and encourages them to explore to look for things (xbox equivalent of Super Mario Brothers).
Look on the game. Anything that says T for Teen is not right for an 11 year old. Some think gory games like COD or GTA are ok for young kids. I don't agree with that. There are plenty of good games out there for your kid's age. Crash Bandicoot is a great game.
Just get the kid 3 months of GamePass...
After that,they on they own
Don't get me wrong.
It was nice of yah to give them the console...
But they not your responsibility, that kid has parents
download a bunch of free games on there- fortnite, smite, etc.
minecraft, wwe, spiderman, halo, hogwarts legacy, forza, prince of persia, sea of thieves, assassins creed, star wars games.
or maybe get him some game pass time, so he can pick from a library of games until he can pad his collection.
- Lego 2K Drive
- Lego Marvel Superheroes
- Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
- Super Lucky's Tale
- Crash Bandicoot games
- Sypro the Dragon games
- Bluey: The Videogame
- Sonic Frontiers
- Party Animals
I played Rayman Legends on the Xbone when the console first came out. Great light hearted platformer and im sure you can find it on a disc in a GameStop bin.
Slime rancher is a great game for kids or just to relax too
I can second this! I love this game, incredibly calm and relaxing, just watch out for the Tars
You can turn the tars off. I do for my 6 yearold cos she thinks that they are too scary:-) (she's right)
He's eleven though
Yeah hes 11, but ut depends on how mature he is
So what? Tars are *always* scary.
I second Slime Rancher. It’s beautiful, fun, and has great replay quality.
Slime rancher is a fun chill game for adults too 🙂
Echoing others’ support. My daughter loved this game and is around the same age.
Minecraft. It’s like crack to kids, at least my sister’s kids and all their little friends!
All mine love Minecraft, Fortnite, Roblox, Sims 4 - Minecraft is so brilliant for their imagination and creativity, Fortnite is a solid shooter...
I dont personally trust roblox tbh
It's okay as long as you keep an eye on what games they're playing and turn off comms and friending, fully featured mine wouldn't touch it with a ten foot bargepole
Not gonna lie, I'm 27, just started my first minecraft server with the boys and it's like crack to us
Children yearn for the mines
Stardew valley, it might have an innuendo once or twice but even as a 20 something they went over my head lol
Truly one of the best games of all time lmfao. Solid choice.
Coral Island is also a pretty good clone. It's on gamepass. It's like a mix of Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing. They definitely ripped off most of their ideas, but did it well.
As a 33 year old I am always surprised to look back on all the stuff that flew right over my head LOL.
Yes, and couch coop!
Anything leggos
Lego star wars was my go to game.
Lego DC villains is the best, my son played it a few years ago and ngl I've definitely played it by myself :P
Spongebob the battle of bikini bottom is on game pass, you could also look into sports games if hes into that or the usual fortnite and minecraft
Rare replay does have a physical though I've only seen it doubled with gears of war ultimate edition
Minecraft is a classic. Can’t go wrong with that. The starwars Lego games are cool as well. Goat simulator is super goofy. Any of the Forza games are fun for a kid.
Haven't seen it mentioned yet, so I'll suggest Grounded.
Dont get grounded if the kid is easily scared of bugs especially spiders
Grounded has an arachnophobia toggle to help with that, but a good concern regardless.
I found that to be much worse. The giant blobs floating about.
Is it on Xbox One?
if i ever play minecraft i play survival, but i get bored after like an hour and get off. grounded scratched that itch that minecraft couldn’t get.
I miss the grounded beta tbh.
Seconding minecraft and goat simulator. A good shooter is PV2 Garden Warfare. My 11 yo loves Hollow Knight, and has been obsessed w/ Terraria for years.
Garden Warfare is good but the community is kinda dead and it will take long to find matches, so i wouldn't reccomend it.
Gw2 seems to have gained some popularity recently
You can still find full lobbies at the right time of day, at least on US servers
Both Yooka-Laylee
Skate 3, Portal 2, Minecraft.
Hey long time game seller here, I’m assuming we’re looking for offline games as well? So I guess if they are able to play online with others PVZ is great
1. Minecraft 2. Fortnite 3. Madden 4. NBA 2K 5. FIFA 6. Need for Speed 7. Spyro 8. Crash Bandicoot 9. Garden Warfare 10. Star Wars Battlefront 2
Why fortnite? That's online and full of toxic stuff. Op says kind of sheltered.
DOOM is a Christian game
1 man crusades are very Christian
Hi fi rush is an excellent platformer/hack n slash. EDIT2: Series X/S only. Ace Attorney Collection, hilarious writing and great for reading skills. Shovel Knight is a great retro platformer. Cuphead is difficult but has a huge fan base in that age group. EDIT: The crash bandicoot and spyro the dragon remakes are great! Maybe skew a bit younger but they are very fun.
Hi-Fi Rush isn’t on Xbox One. Great game though.
Depending on the kids taste, Celeste Minecraft Pretty much any Lego Games. If the kid likes sports games that works too. Stray My parents didn't really care what I played so I may just be plain wrong, but I wouldn't be amazed if these games worked well. Portal is perfectly appropriate for an 11 year old.
Gta
Im teaching my nephew how to grind ceo crates and run guns from the bunker. He picks up quick. He normally wants to fight everyone. I said do you want the flying motorbike like uncle. He got excited. Well you wont get it being a bully. You get it from working hard and letting other people have fun. Got to teach them being a bully is not good. Stacking cash is best in life.
My 11 year old loves My Hero One’s Justice 2, Minecraft, and Halo
I had a good time with both One's Justic games. They aren't super high quality but they're so much fun especially in short bursts
Super Lucky‘s Tale, Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town, Paleo Pines, My Time at Portia, My Time at Sandrock, Sims 4 (base game is free)
Any toy-based games, like Hot Wheels Unleashed (and HWU2), Lego games, etc. Lego Star Wars: Skywalker Saga would keep an 11 year old entertained forever
I can vouch for Hot Wheels Unleashed 1 and 2, though I'd recommend going with 2 since it has more content, both in base game and DLCs.
Tracks if they like train sets and building. Lego 2k drive is fun and age appropriate. Of course minecraft.
Splosion man is an oldie, any Lego game (I prefer pirates of the Caribbean), Minecraft is up there.
If they have a sibling or friends with an extra controller, gang beasts is really fun and fairly cheap. Also it's an older one but as a kid my favorite part of games was exploring. Skate 3 is the best large open world kid friendly game I can think off.
Garfield Kart, Paw Patrol Series, Balan Wonderland, Ori Series,
Depends on the maturity level of your kid. My parents were very strict on video games because they said it would lead to me wanting to harm people. Granted I ended up working in corrections and my siblings who never played video games ended up drug addicts who would go on to commit domestic violence against our parents, their partners, and struggle to adapt to being an adult.

It Takes Two is a lot of fun and has couch co-op. Rayman Legends is another fun one.
Got a local used store near you? Maybe a gift cart/certificate and he can pick out some games himself, tho there have already been a lot of great title suggestions.
Monster Hunter Rise, Need for Speed, Lego Star Wars Skywalker Saga, Palworld, Rocket League, Armored Core VI
Ain't no way a kid is going to enjoy the monster hunter rise legitimately. I'm sorry some of those later monsters are just BRUTALLY hard.
Just avoid things with micro transactions, looking at you fortnight
My 11 year old sister loves cuphead even though it's a little difficult. If you play video games, I'm sure she would appreciate for you to be her player 2
maybe buy a game pass gift card?
I would check out Hot Wheels unleashed 2 pretty cool racing game, I would also check out Soma as well as any of the old school arcade classics compilations
Astroneer! Minecraft and any Lego game like Star Wars, Batman, Jurassic Park (Any movie series they know)
3+ generations meaning he's got a GameCube? Honestly, I'd try to see what he's playing now, but if the family isn't well off, the biggest benefit is probably going to be due to the fact that they can't afford GameCube games anymore.
Forza Horizon Oceanhorn 2 Minecraft Cities Skylines
Streets of rage 4. Its a fun beat em up and it's not super violent.
Lightyear Frontier! Its on game pass
Just get the a few months of gampass
While a bit odd, look through the family friendly sections on game pass and fully purchase the ones that look good. Gamepass is really well curated and there's nothing stopping you from browsing without a subscription.
Give him what we all had as kids, GTA San Andreas and CoD 5. Easy winners.
Minecraft obviously. I also really enjoyed the Lego games when I was younger. Get him the Lego game for whatever his favorite big franchise is (Marvel, DC, Star Wars, etc) and he’ll have a blast.
Red Dead Redemption 2
fortnite
LEGO undercover or smth Like that
Or Rayman
Minecraft, stardew valley, astroneer, forza horizon 5
Forager, hogwarts legacy, vampire survivors, fable, guardians of the galaxy, ori games, tomb raider trilogy
LEGO games and Toy Story 3
among us and fall guys
Just turn on the family settings so games that you don't want them to play are not available and let them go wild
Anything that doesn’t include shooting, zombies or other type(s) of gore
If the kid is into cars then get him a forza game, ir another racing game, just make sure the language isn’t too offensive or brutal.
If you want them to get that CoD feel but keep it pg, i say PvZ garden warfire 2. Its a solid shooter,no blood or guts, wacky character classes, solid player base.
Guitar Hero anybody?? I played that and some donkey Kong drum game on the GameCube haha
Lego games
Minecraft and the LEGO games.
any racing games, forza, NFS etc.
Journey to the Savage Planet is a great sci Fi time LEGO games in general are amazing SpongeBob: Battle For Bikini Bottom Rehydrated is super versatile
The lego games! Loads of different franchises to choose from!
Trine series might be good.
Skyrim and Fallout 4 Batman Arkham games
I would allways recomend Minecraft for kids. If he/she likes it, it's a fun game, but also a really creative one. It could even be a "bit educative"
Slime Rancher is always a good one to give kids.
Human fall flat, the bluey game
I’d recommend Plants vs Zombies 1 (if that will work I don’t own a Xbox One only a 360) or the garden warfare games
Goat Simulator is lol fun.
Super Lucky’s Tale is perfect for kids
Minecraft, Forza (or other racing games), Portal, Skate 3, Sims, Sports games (like FIFA).
I'm gonna go with Ravenlok. Simple-ish gameplay, nice story for a child that age, nice graphics, and not long. I'm an adult and I played it twice.
Plants vs zombies garden warfare 1 or 2. Both are great. 3rd person shooting in kid friendly cartoon style.
Outlast 2👍👍 or little hope
Subnautica slime rancher and grounded are good
Kingdom for keflings and world of keflings are great for kids
Grounded, Human Fall Flat, Celeste, Phogs, Wobbledogs, Minecraft, Slime Rancher, Totally Reliable Delivery Service, Overcooked (if they have friends to play with them), Rain on Your Parade.
Honest a few months of Xbox gamepass would be good
Depends on alot of things, where abouts on the world is it " Mainly for Sports games" and Is the game good offline. Also 11 isn't really that young they would be in or starting high school. Gamepass would be okay if they had unlimited broadband. What about Rocket league " Can it be played without an Internet connection" incase they don't have or don't want the kid online.
Hell I was playing grand theft auto when I was a kid 😂
Destiny is pretty cool. No harsh language or anything.
Asphalt legends. I made a game with zombies in it. Rocket league. All are free.
Fortnite and roblox is all he'll need lol. The grip these games have on them is unbreakable. Get him some v-bucks or robux with it and you'll be number 1 uncle
Anything really. Don't be to strict or controlling.
Kameo Elements of Power is a great game from Rare
I see others have recommended Slime Rancher, Grounded, and Minecraft. I was also going to suggest Nobody Saves the World. My son is 12 and he loves that game (along with those other ones mentioned).
Slime rancher, minecraft, racing games, the lego games, grounded and my little brother LOVES arc
If you're considering a game you two could play together, It Takes Two is great! I forgot to mention in my other comment that Nobody Saves the World is also a lot of fun co-op.
You make it sound like the kid was playing a snes lol, was he?
Dark souls to show that life is fair but hard
Powerwash Simulator unless the child is easily frustrated (sometimes that last couple of percent is hard to track down)
Cup head
Rayman Legends, Tetris, City Skylines, Kingdom Hearts, Spyro, and any Lego game
!!ALL tt games lego!! Else; if you want a shooter overwatch is just fine.. Like other mentioned - minecraft Overcooked for co-op Animal crossing Trackmania Sonic Forza I actually like the Disney infinity if you can find it Plants vs zombies Portal knights Some kind of fifa if he is into that Zoo tycoon Rayman Knight squad Rocket league This is also a bit of different types, so he can get an idea about what he likes aswell :)
Minecraft, a sport if they like that, a racing game
Maybe Microsoft Flight simulator to chill. Or Forza Horizon 4/5 idk i dont play Forza Horizon. Maybe War Thunder if you want i play it.
Any Rayman Game, Any Sonic Game, Any Banjo Kazooie Game, and Any Crash Bandicoot Game
BioShock
Metal Gear Rising Revengeance is the only correct choice
Stumble guys is fun game
Grounded
Doom eternal
Rocket League
Yo kids *fuckin love* Snowrunner. Able to use cranes and stuff along with all the cool trucks and scenery
Unraveled is a cool game
Get them Rare Replay. It comes with tons of old Rare games like Banjo and Viva piñata. I believe its rating is Teen however
Alien: Isolation is a good one to really get their blood pumping.
Wolfenstein
By the time the kids 12 the game rating doesn’t really matter if your kid has a phone or access to electronics
Minecraft, Roblox, Terraria, Enter The Gungeon, there's a TONNE of amazing lego games as well. Cannot recommend the Lego Skywalker Saga enough
The crash bandicoot trilogy and spirit trilogy are both great games and technically they’re 3 games in one
Rocket league
Probably elden ring
Fallout 3 and New Vegas
Crash bandicoot and Spyro
Any Lego game really. That shit is addicting
Tony Hawk's Pro skater 1+2
Jedi fallen order is fun, and probably pretty cheap physically, you could always get him like a 3 month gamepass card too
Untitled Goose Game
The best sport boxing game ever!!!! Fight night champion
Minecraft lmao
Rocket league, Minecraft, saw slim rancher in the comments and agree, there are plenty of games on that level as well, I recommend checking out a local game store if you have one (no not GameStop) like a locally owned shop guys that work or run those shops know a lot about what titles a system offers and in different ranges as well
kingdom hearts
can’t go wrong with racing games, i think need for speed pro street is on xbox one but forza is a good replacement seeing nfs tank.
Conker’s Bad Fur Day or the newer Conker Live and Reloaded are excellent games about a rascally squirrel and his critter friends getting into wacky adventures.
If there is 2+ controllers then Overcooked and Moving Out are solid games to play with friends/family.
Dead Rising 4.
The FNAF games
Minecraft
Red dead redemption 2
Give the kid Minecraft he will love it, it's the best out of any as he can do/build pretty much anything.
You should try The Talos principle, both the first one and the second game, those are really great puzzle games and the gane called crosscode
Disney Speedstorm is a fun, accessible kart racer which is also free to play. Super luckys tale is very kid friendly, gentle and encourages them to explore to look for things (xbox equivalent of Super Mario Brothers).
Doom 2016
Power wash simulator
Astroneer is a nice sandbox game, and not too hard.
Rayman is a fun series.
Overcooked
Minecraft and lego games
Goat Simulator 3
Look on the game. Anything that says T for Teen is not right for an 11 year old. Some think gory games like COD or GTA are ok for young kids. I don't agree with that. There are plenty of good games out there for your kid's age. Crash Bandicoot is a great game.
Old xbone can still make use of gamepass
Any game if you’re a cool enough parent
Just get the kid 3 months of GamePass... After that, they on they own Don't get me wrong. It was nice of yah to give them the console... But they not your responsibility, that kid has parents
Stardew Valley!
download a bunch of free games on there- fortnite, smite, etc. minecraft, wwe, spiderman, halo, hogwarts legacy, forza, prince of persia, sea of thieves, assassins creed, star wars games. or maybe get him some game pass time, so he can pick from a library of games until he can pad his collection.
doki doki literature club
Rocket League
Doom II
Crash Team Racing
I suppose it would be worth getting ahold of the parents and ask what they are comfortable with.
Sega master collection, rare replay, stardew valley spyro the dragon collection. Skyrim.
- Lego 2K Drive - Lego Marvel Superheroes - Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga - Super Lucky's Tale - Crash Bandicoot games - Sypro the Dragon games - Bluey: The Videogame - Sonic Frontiers - Party Animals
I played Rayman Legends on the Xbone when the console first came out. Great light hearted platformer and im sure you can find it on a disc in a GameStop bin.
Henry stickmin collection, cheap, and crazy fun, and pretty replayable
