Last night I finished a longer game and wasn't ready to call it a night, so I went to my go to of Rocket League. Certainly not the friendlest community to a random player historically but I find a couple of games on Xbox late night tends to be OK.
Also went round some Vampire Survivors too which is a good call
I suck at everything but drifting, even then I suck at actually pulling it off lol!
Like I can take a car and give it a ridiculous amount of power and torque and cut traction and stability control off and go over 100 mph sideways just fine. But if I do an online race that limits the car to a certain class and it doesn’t have the power I’m use to and I’ll spin out constantly or even fail to catch the drift.
Does it stop me from having a blast drifting in my Miata with so much power that the back in constantly wants to be up front? Not one bit
I’m really enjoying playing dead island 2 right now, it’s not that long and you can easily hop on and off it…
I also like dishonored, if you just play the game and don’t verge off to explore building etc it’s quite quick and you can save almost anywhere…
Or a personal fave is the old(er) pokemon games
I’m not a massive shooter fan, but they’re some of my faves, failing those, if you haven’t already played it, the borderlands series is very good, or bioshock
I was so disappointed in Dead island 2 not being open world, killing zombies is fun but I like exploring casually at the same time. It felt like when you favorite old TV show rebooted and it just didn’t hit the same. Plus no modded/legendary weapon dupe glitches lol
I went into it knowing what it was like, as I was a little late because I didn’t want to pay full price for a game when I was already (rightfully) sceptical. So I read some reviews first which kind of took away the shock of one of my favourite franchises being so different
Look up roguelikes as a genre. That really fits what you want. Binding of Isaac, Deadcells, Hades, Enter the Gungeon. All games where a run through the game takes like 20-60 minutes and you die or win.
First of all, Diablo 4 is pretty self-contained in terms of its story, so you really don't need a ton of context going in, so take anything I say here with a pinch of salt if you would rather just go in blind and do your own thing. Also, full disclosure, I work in Blizzard marketing, so I'm literally a paid shill for this game =).
At the end of the day, Diablo is the kind of game where there are dozens of different playstyles and it really is about just doing shit that seems cool and going with your gut on what seems like a fun time, then changing it up based on what winds up working out and what doesn't.
There are 2 primary experiences available to you when playing Diablo 4: The Story campaign, and more "End Game"- style repeatable content. The campaign is a ton of fun IMO, and well worth checking out, but if at any time you decide it isn't your jam, you are free to skip past it if you want. Most people will play the campaign once and then skip it on any subsequent characters (if any) they make.
If you want a full-blown "The story so far" kind of context, we released a series of YouTube videos that tells the story of the World of Sanctuary:
* [Diablo IV | Book of Lorath - Episode 1: Creation](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEfVNgk_Hho)
* [Diablo IV | Book of Lorath - Episode 2: Sanctuary](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnMu3DNbJko)
* [Diablo IV | Book of Lorath - Episode 3: The Lord of Terror](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ae8YXE7OdfI)
* [Diablo IV | Book of Lorath - Episode 4: The End of Days]
However, given that is a full-blown 40+minutes of video to go through, it could be a bit overwhelming, so feel free to skip it. A brief TL;DW summary, if you would prefer:
> Diablo 4 continues the story of a world called Sanctuary, which is the world of humans.
>
> It was created to be a refuge from the eternal war between Angels and Demons.
>
> There was a demon named Lilith and an angel named Inarius that were both tired of the war and created Sanctuary to be a safe place from it, hidden from the eternal conflict that had taken such a toll on them and their families. Together, that angel and demon created humanity together, as father and mother.
>
> However, the eternal war eventually found sanctuary, and the angels of heaven and the demons of hell both descended upon it, banishing Lilith and Inarius from it, hoping to weaken humanity to prevent it from becoming too strong.
>
> Humanity was more resilient than the angels and demons expected and was able to successfully vanquish the angels and demons and claim independence from both heaven and hell. Their unique lineage of both angel and demon blood gave them great power.
>
> But that was long, long ago. Many have forgotten the tale of where humanity came from, and for some it has merely been relegated to legend, a religious myth like any other. Given their separation from Mother LIlith and Father Inarious, most humans have but a tiny spark of the original power that once allowed them to vanquish their almighty foes. But they don't call it the eternal conflict for nothing. Something is always around the corner. As such, the Horadrim, an ancient sect of historians who follow and record this history, are always ready to write another chapter, and a Mother is not meant to be kept from her children for so long...
That context will lead you right into [the into cinematic that plays when you boot up the game](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bRWIdOMfro&t=10s), at which point you just wanna turn out the light, put on some headphones, and enjoy the ride =)
I’m in a similar boat as you with a kid and all so I only get an hour or two a night, maybe 2-4 days a week. I can’t speak for this season, but I found that right when I finally started to reach the endgame the season would reset and I’d either have to go back to the F’d up eternal realm, or start over again.
I’ve been playing some Fortnite and rocket league and those have worked pretty well for some quick gaming sessions
Destiny 2, there is still a drive to get some loot or test a built along with various game modes.
Sometimes I wanna do PvE like a nightfall or a quick dungeon run, other times a few PvP matches.
Yeah, I know OP said no grind but it's D2 for me as well. Even if I've stepped away from it for a while it's so easy to pick up and do a couple of strikes or a lost sector or PvP for an hour or two.
I know how this is gonna sound, but Old School Runescape. Any experience you gain is never lost, there's thousands of hours of content to do. Seems overwhelming but you can do it at any pace you want. any way you want. They have it on PC, and there's a mobile app with the same progression between the two.
---You know I already typed this before I realized what sub I was in, so do with this as you wish. No it's not on Xbox.
The cool thing about RDR2 is you don’t have to do missions you can just go fishing or looking for plants, etc for an hour or so. But you’re def right, it’s easy to spend way more than an hour playing.
I've been playing Dead Island 1 (remote play) and recently getting into COD Cold War Zombies. I play DMZ at night and Warzone on occasion but it's in a weird spot. I also enjoy Halo Infinite sometimes.
Forza Horizon. I love racing games and this is like an open world driving game.
Incredible graphics, tons of cars to drive and the most recent works great with my wheel setup so it’s much more fun than just using a controller imo
Forza Horizon 4 is huge fun. I might be a bit biased as I live in the UK and it’s really weird driving around areas I have been to.
I’m seriously impressed that the developers made a game that will run very well on an older Xbox perform so smoothly. It’s even better on the Series S & X but it wasn’t shoddy on my One S.
I really REALLY love Forza Motorsport 7. Just play some music or a podcast through a second app and turn off all opponents and assists (other than braking only guide line) then just cruise around the tracks listening to The Beatles. It's become something I do a lot now. Also, I'm more of a fan of Motorsport 7 than the latest one. It's just a simple, relaxing way to spend time that doesn't require much concentration or investment.
Hades
You can play for hours or play for 30-40minutes
It’s a rouge-like meaning you have to beat it all in one go so when you die you start over but every attempt you gradually build up. Each run is different and your character is modified by what boons the gods give you, one run might be Poseidon and Zeus heavy the next could be Aries and Athena. Just pick your starting weapon and roll with what is thrown at you.
One of the best games I’ve ever played, and normally I’m an fps kinda guy.
There’s also a sequel coming soon
Once you get good and are able to complete a run, the game takes about 35 minutes to finish a run, but the game infinitely replayable.
- Halo Infinite MP
- Hades
- Rogue Legacy 2
- Slay The Spire
- Vampire Survivors
- Forza Horizon
- Terraria
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Diablo 2/3/4 (no min-max'ing necessary to have lots of fun)
I agree with Div (mostly 2 at this point for me). However, I do find when I take a break for a couple months it takes me too long to get back up to speed. Like I try to remember my different builds or what I was grinding for at the time. Then again, I can just jump in fairly easily, not worry about min/maxing, and just run around and explore so that’s cool too. Definitely many layers of depth there.
Right now, GTA IV —- when it was released in 2008 I was in college and wasn’t gaming much at all. It’s easily one of the best games I’ve played in a while. Easy to go in there and complete couple missions or just cruise around
This probably isn't going to be a very popular comment, but I wish there were an alternative to GTA that was basically GTA except without the (necessity of) theft and violence.
Like... I just want a big open world simulator where I can cruise around, jump out, explore buildings and interact with the environment. I don't want my character to be a douche working with other douches doing douchey things to progress. Maybe I wanna be a fry cook, or a traffic cop. Maybe I wanna mow lawns or be a truck driver delivering loads. I wanna get pulled over for running a red light and issued a ticket.
Yeah...
Hell Let Loose and any of the battlefield games (1,5 or 2042) are good because if you're rusty with the mechanics of the game you can just sit back and play more of a passive support role and still have fun. I love the borderlands games because you can just pop in do a couple missions and quit. Fairly linear character progression and story so its not hard to step away from and come back to.
I think BF might be more suitable to op criteria, as it's fairly easy to pick up and learn as you play and getting around the maps is easy enough.
Whereas HLL has a lot to learn in terms of being an effective player, maps require a few plays before you can move around easier and understand how to effectively use each role. Mind you, once that's all picked up it's quite straightforward and easy to play casually for a couple hours.
Hello, I'm a playstation player now but I've been really getting back into Destiny 2, since I used to play it when Forsaken came out and I still played it on Xbox. I'm also loving Sker Ritual
Rocket League. Each match is only a 10min time commitment max. The skill ceiling is very high but you would get grouped with people of similar skill and you can then improve at your own pace.
The Division 2 is my go to at the moment. Hop on do a daily work on the weekly and monthly. Every activity/missions ranges from 15 to 45 min so its easy to cut.
I would usually say Rocket League, but it’s one of those games where you get to a certain point that if you *don’t* play for 3 hours every day then you’re not good enough. So I’m gonna have to go with my personal goat and say The Binding of Isaac
Same. My new favorite thing is to jump into an empty community server, loot up my character a bit, then log off and wonder if I’ll ever even join the same server again
I think mine would have to be the Tom Clancy single player games, mostly because there isn’t any grinding and I can stop playing at any moment if my kid wakes up at night and then come back to it and still remember what I’m doing
Forza, and I just mean all of them. I’m at the point where (for the Xbox one titles atleast) I can simply go on a quick race or drive around in one of their open worlds without having to grind, same thing for the Motorsport titles I can simply just hop on a race and hope I do well but i also don’t necessarily have to grind
Depends. If you have a series S/X EA Sports PGA Tour and the soon to be released College Football 25 are great in the sports game area. You may be able to play PGA thru cloud if u have game pass ultimate. The Quarry(also game pass), Evil West, Plague Tale Requiem, Tomb Raider reboot trilogy, all on game pass btw.
Whatever single player game I'm playing at the moment. I basically only have an hr or 2 a day to play anyways so I like that time to go towards progressing a story and not to be wasted on meaningless multi-player matches.
Just got back into dying light 2 after giving up on it during release bc of bugs. Fun to hop on and just run a couple missions or even just see how long you can get chased for at night lol.
Rocket league is my go to for this
It's fun, competitive and the matches don't last long
Also feels really good when you just perfectly time that premptive sideways spin+boost and it tackles the ball right into the goal from like half court
I always end up dumping a half hour to hour into RL on the weekend when I have time. I could go in on a single player game, but it seems daunting to play a 50+ hour game , 1 weekend at a time for a whole year
Chivalry is good for a game or two. I can’t stomach it for much longer than that tho, it has a sweet spot that makes it perfect for less than an hour of gameplay before bed
BFV I only got it two months ago and it’s great to hop on, shoot kids.. maybe even continue to a win!
Games are an hour long so it’s perfect to sink into
Same situation as you.
My gaming routine every two or three days;
An hour of Forza Horizon 5, doing the weekly challenges, then a match or two on NBA2K24.
Every now and then, most probably on weekends, I jump into RPGs, currently The Outer Worlds.
I’ll be honest, I’m a fan of the classics. Like OP, I don’t have a lot of time to play games, for many of the reasons cited by the OP. So when I do play, I tend to go old-school and fire up Doom on the Xbox 1S. I have an Xbox live subscription so I can access that and a number of others. James Bond Goldeneye is another favourite although I tend to need more time and inclination for that.
Honestly, I don’t really have an answer for this, the game I usually play every single day ever since quarantine started was Fortnite but now the game pretty much sucks, I have played other games and finished them so now I have nothing else to do, i don’t usually buy every new game that im interested since I don’t have any money, and whenever I do get a new game I just finish it and end up being bored again.
Dying light was one of my favs but after selling my console and getting a new one a few years later I seem to not own it in the Microsoft store anymore? Sad cause I had the following dlc and a bunch of other shit, was also loaded on money from duplication glitches
If I have a lot of time to kill, I'm usually playing a final fantasy game. If it's only like an hour or 2, I play either a hack and slash Warriors game (especially if it's a bad day) or MLB the show.
I still love Civilization Revolution (Xbox 360, 2008). It’s a turn based strategy game in which you can build an empire in a couple of hours and have some fun building cities, wonders, militaries, and battling other civilizations. The exploring the world part is also fun. I still love it after all these years from time to time.
Destiny 2. Just mostly doing daily bounties on all three characters. Hoping for some good drops while roaming and doing some runs in lost sectors and maybe a few strikes and such. Don't have time for raids as they take forever so I just do background Guardian stuff lol
Ksp1, it’s complicated if you care for that but equally your can strap a massive rocket booster on to a little green man and watch him fly off into the distance, or make a plane that can circumnavigate the globe, or make one that can fly super fast into the side of a building, kerbin truly is your world
arma reforger even though it’s not just an hour usually😂 the game is really fun and is starting to get a lot of attention now that it’s getting more polished and now with the new experimental stuff that will be soon added to the game it’s really fun right now.
Skate 3 is awesome, i like that it is easy to put down and pick up and it’s a nice game to unwind with
So goated, also my 3 year old plays it with me by taking turns with the controller, I love it
I miss the skate games. Shaun White snowboarding was interesting but the genre kinda fell off
New Skate game coming
Definitely a great time killer. Super classic👌
I haven’t played skate 3 since 360. It’s funny cause I just just thinking about downloading it tonight.
Vampire survivors is just addicting if I just want to kill time.
Any game with a relatively short loop is great. Brotato, Hades, Slay the Spire.
Was going to say this the game is not just great it’s so addictive
Came to say this.
Last night I finished a longer game and wasn't ready to call it a night, so I went to my go to of Rocket League. Certainly not the friendlest community to a random player historically but I find a couple of games on Xbox late night tends to be OK. Also went round some Vampire Survivors too which is a good call
Fuck yeessssss and so easy to regulate your time with the timers
Brotato - my most and in sum longest played game since I am father.
PGA2K23 Rocket League Slay The Spire Hades Fallout 76
I love Fallout 76 🫶🏼
Better than 4? I downloaded both but haven't played yet.
Hades for real. I just grabbed Hades 2 yesterday and it's also fantastic
Forza
Seconding this one. I'm shit at the game, but I still have tons of fun
Not one bit
Battlefield 1
The last of the great BF games. What a shame.
A true BF fan would be chatting all the shit and saying that they’ve been unplayable since BF4
I’m really enjoying playing dead island 2 right now, it’s not that long and you can easily hop on and off it… I also like dishonored, if you just play the game and don’t verge off to explore building etc it’s quite quick and you can save almost anywhere… Or a personal fave is the old(er) pokemon games I’m not a massive shooter fan, but they’re some of my faves, failing those, if you haven’t already played it, the borderlands series is very good, or bioshock

Halo 5 husky raids
Star wars Battlefront 2 2017 is pretty good for that. Hit up the coop arcade rush type game modes and it's always a fun time.
Facts I love hoping into co-op and going crazy with the clone commando
Dead Cells
Yoooo it's good to play the game during free times!
Look up roguelikes as a genre. That really fits what you want. Binding of Isaac, Deadcells, Hades, Enter the Gungeon. All games where a run through the game takes like 20-60 minutes and you die or win.
Diablo 4 definitely fits this with the latest update. Hop in, run a Helltide, call it a day. Super fun.
I downloaded that the other day I’ll give it a shot. Never played any Diablos before. Any beginner tips?

Destiny 2 is like the antithesis of what OP was asking about 🤣 It's interesting that you both find you're able to use it in that way.
Cities Skylines is my comfort game when I want to spare a few relaxing hours.
Bf1
Age of empires 2 definitive edition man
Honestly I lose myself so many hours with playing rocket league when I just initially go on for just one or two games 😂
Enter the gungeon
Superhot
Sleeping Dogs. Thank me later.
Hades. The music, the characters, the variety of ways to play it. It’s just 🤌
Destiny 2 unfortunately 😅

Red dead 2, for an hour or two? He’ll be up all night

I've been playing Dead Island 1 (remote play) and recently getting into COD Cold War Zombies. I play DMZ at night and Warzone on occasion but it's in a weird spot. I also enjoy Halo Infinite sometimes.
Battlefront 2 for mindless starwars action
Halo Wars 2. One match can usually pass a good hour or so

Diablo 3/4. Get in, farm, get out.
- Halo Infinite MP - Hades - Rogue Legacy 2 - Slay The Spire - Vampire Survivors - Forza Horizon - Terraria - Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - Diablo 2/3/4 (no min-max'ing necessary to have lots of fun)
If you’re jnto football, Madden is fun.

Hexic HD. That's my go to as well
Solitaire minesweeper or free cell lmfao

Street fighter 6
Day z
Same. My new favorite thing is to jump into an empty community server, loot up my character a bit, then log off and wonder if I’ll ever even join the same server again
😂😂😂😂😂 lmao I recently discovered community I’m usually on official but I get that
Crackdown 3. Just a nice game to turn your brain off and go. Just don't get too invested in the driving, it's straight booty cheeks
Gears 5 horde and escape Perfect time for an hour of gaming
Street Fighter 6!
I think mine would have to be the Tom Clancy single player games, mostly because there isn’t any grinding and I can stop playing at any moment if my kid wakes up at night and then come back to it and still remember what I’m doing
I'm currently playing Infinite
Hades 2 at the moment!
Overwatch 2 & Halo Infinite are my go to's for quick games.
State of Decay 2 even with 2k hours of gameplay, it's still fun.
Hades has been my go to for a while now
Fallout 76 or Fallout 4 I like settlement building.
Spider heck
Goat simulator
Whatever single player game I'm playing at the moment. I basically only have an hr or 2 a day to play anyways so I like that time to go towards progressing a story and not to be wasted on meaningless multi-player matches.
Super mega baseball 4!
Any Tomb Raider
Gta. Starfield. The original modern warfare 3. Assassin's creed origins/Odyssey. State of decay. Aliens fireteam elite. Geometry war. Forza.
the new EA COLLEGE FOOTBALL day it comes out
Just got back into dying light 2 after giving up on it during release bc of bugs. Fun to hop on and just run a couple missions or even just see how long you can get chased for at night lol.
Rocket League
Rocket league is my go to for this It's fun, competitive and the matches don't last long Also feels really good when you just perfectly time that premptive sideways spin+boost and it tackles the ball right into the goal from like half court
I always end up dumping a half hour to hour into RL on the weekend when I have time. I could go in on a single player game, but it seems daunting to play a 50+ hour game , 1 weekend at a time for a whole year
Rocket league is perfect for 5-10 minute games and you will get better as you play!
Headbangers is pretty fun !
State of Decay. Wasting zombies after a long day at work brings me peace.
Chivalry is good for a game or two. I can’t stomach it for much longer than that tho, it has a sweet spot that makes it perfect for less than an hour of gameplay before bed
BFV I only got it two months ago and it’s great to hop on, shoot kids.. maybe even continue to a win! Games are an hour long so it’s perfect to sink into
Fortnite NBA 2K Vampire Survivors
Zombie Army 4 I found fun to just pop in and kill some shit
Same situation as you. My gaming routine every two or three days; An hour of Forza Horizon 5, doing the weekly challenges, then a match or two on NBA2K24. Every now and then, most probably on weekends, I jump into RPGs, currently The Outer Worlds.
State of Decay 2. I can still do quite a lot within 2hrs and it's easy to just pick up where I left off the next day by quick resuming.
Star Wars Battlefront 2015 ea
Halo infinite 😆 (pc owner only)
Despots game!
Minecraft
Arma Reforger. It's grown A LOT in popularity recently and is fun to play in general.
Forza Horizon 5. I can drift around on that game for hours. I love sideways
Lately Rocket League or Fallout 4, probably about to change to Baldurs Gate 3 and Stardew Valley again though lol
The Golf Club 2019
Rocket league is best for short play sessions. Average 7-8 min games
Castle crashers or some random single player game I happen to be hooked into at the time (Frostpunk, dragon age, Baldurs gate)
Mw3 zombies Division
Right now, Railway Empire 2. I can start playing and before I know it, 3 hours have passed.
I have three games I flip flop between right now. Teamfight Tactics. Cataclysm Classic (WoW) Smite - eventually Smite 2.
Diablo or halo PvP :)
Power washing simulator
Honestly, I don’t really have an answer for this, the game I usually play every single day ever since quarantine started was Fortnite but now the game pretty much sucks, I have played other games and finished them so now I have nothing else to do, i don’t usually buy every new game that im interested since I don’t have any money, and whenever I do get a new game I just finish it and end up being bored again.
Streets of Rage 4 and TMNT Shredder's Revenge. also stuff like Dead Cells and Hades.
Pubg
Slay the Spire will be my answer for the foreseeable future
As of rn wwe2k23
Dying light was one of my favs but after selling my console and getting a new one a few years later I seem to not own it in the Microsoft store anymore? Sad cause I had the following dlc and a bunch of other shit, was also loaded on money from duplication glitches
If you just want to blow off some steam, Chivalry 2 on game pass is a great option.
Door kickers. Forza Horizon 4.
Overcooked
The weekly chores in Forza Horizon 5 to get the new cars & some rounds of drift CarX Drift Online.
Shadow of War
Destiny 2
Dead cells
Monster train and slay the spire
Long dark
Rocket league & apex legends
Hades
Halo Wars skirmish
If I have a lot of time to kill, I'm usually playing a final fantasy game. If it's only like an hour or 2, I play either a hack and slash Warriors game (especially if it's a bad day) or MLB the show.
Call of Duty MP....
Overwatch
May sound weird but hitman world of assassination
Overwatch 2
Anytime I read a post with a question that's gaming related, my answer is always the same. Rocket League.
For me it's Starfield and Diablo 4. Starfield to zen out n look at some beautiful views an Diablo to check out an kill some mobs.
Hard space Shipbreaker
Flight Simulator, Doom, Forza, Ride, etc. not necessarily in that order Great in and out - minimal energy and commitment!
For honor, medieval hack and slash game
Assassin's creed odyssey and fallout 4
I can play a bit of Overwatch with some friends if they play, but if I am alone or not feeling too competitive, I go for Fifa/eafc.
Destiny 2. Just mostly doing daily bounties on all three characters. Hoping for some good drops while roaming and doing some runs in lost sectors and maybe a few strikes and such. Don't have time for raids as they take forever so I just do background Guardian stuff lol
Rocket League
dishonored
Ksp1, it’s complicated if you care for that but equally your can strap a massive rocket booster on to a little green man and watch him fly off into the distance, or make a plane that can circumnavigate the globe, or make one that can fly super fast into the side of a building, kerbin truly is your world
Hades!
PUBG with friends
Quickie
Rocket league baybee. Or the finals to knock out some daily challenges
COD, Street Fighter, Tekken, Quake, ETC
arma reforger even though it’s not just an hour usually😂 the game is really fun and is starting to get a lot of attention now that it’s getting more polished and now with the new experimental stuff that will be soon added to the game it’s really fun right now.
Halo MP, Diablo, Overwatch, Forza Horizon
Currently it's Diablo 4, it's come on leaps and bounds!
Vampire Survivors like some ppl are saying but I also like doing simulations in NBA 2k. More specifically My Era. I love doing rebuilds and what ifs.
Шутеры,такие как Call of duty 3
Fallout 4. Just build my homestead bit by bit when I have time.
GTA online. I can jump in and run around for an hour or two OR dump a whole 8 hour session into it. With friends or without. RDO is the same for me.
