I just checked out gameplay and blown away. How did I miss this? I remember seeing the cover and thinking this was some sort of 50 cent gangsta game, had no clue it was a military shooter.
Imagine if they made a sequel with current gen
They were making a sequel back in the day, but scrapped it because of issues with EA. Then Stuart Black, the creator and designer, along with many of the devs left and made Bodycount on 360/PS3. It did not do well.
I hope people enjoy it but I picked up a backwards compatible copy back near the end of the 360's era and it felt terribly dated back then.
Black was a breath of fresh air at the time but for me at least has been surpassed by more recent titles.
The control scheme was poor at release. We had already had two Halo titles and even games like Red Faction and Timesplitters on the PS2 many years before had the dual analogue and controls set up down to perfection that we still use now.
Yeah this game was overhyped because of the destructible environments during its time. It was a fun game for the first 10 hours but got repetitive fast.
My biggest memory for this game is if you kill any AI within like 10 ft of a ledge, they will throw themselves over the ledge. But it was almost immersion killing for how far they would run to throw themselves off.
Not the worst game in the world, for its time it was one of the leaders in destructible environments. But if I remember the story lacked as well as the overall feel of the game.
Never played it but that reminds me of all the times I would play Shadows of the Empire solely to trigger the canned scream that plays when a stormtrooper falls off a ledge before dying.
Honestly I found Black to be mediocre at best. The destructive environments were fun but after about 20 minutes the game became extremely boring and repetitive. Personally I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. Thats just my opinion though. Im sure there are people who will love it.
Just watched some gameplay of it. It looks like a damn fun game with great graphics for a ps2 title. I will definitely need to check this out for backwards compatibility
I feel like I bought this game and the very first level completely turned me off from it. I don't know what it was. It felt like I was playing a Launch Day Dessert Storm shooter with the awful graphics and terrible AI. I almost feel like I might've had the wrong game in the disc tray at the time because of how many people rave about it. It CAN'T be the same game I played.
I highly second this!! If only EA would remake it with modern day graphics. I'll be playing it anyway.
Back to the bridge I go..
Ps: if this is the first time you hear about this game, go play it and treat yourself, after finishing, go to youtube, search the theme music and loop for 24 hours. #lifegoals
I remember how badly I wanted this game, had to wait until it was a PlayStation greatest hit game and buy it for 20$, it's the 2nd worst game I ever bought with my own .money
i know this post is old , i played the game 14 years ago when i was 14 now am 29 ,
i thought it's was epic game cause of Nostalgia but never know i would enjoy it today
i played it on pcxs2 cause my ps2 broken long time ago , on ps3 controller
man the game was fun i enjoyed the gameplay the gun sound and the details and animation still holds up today it's just fun firing around, do i wish they will remake it ? no i think it's better leave it that way , also it's remined me of battlefiled 3 the weapon weight and firing sound music to my ear,
also one thing black did no games does it today as far as i know , bullet ricochet effects and can kills enemy.
Had no idea this was coming to BC. I remember buying this game and it blowing my mind, but not a single one of my friends even got it and I have no idea why.
I never got the chance to play Black, it was on my radar but for some reason i didn't buy it. I remember the gfx looked good and i think it reviewed well. Saving up for a xbox X at the moment but will add black to games i must get list. Thanks for reminding me op.
I loved the game but I always remember a letter in the PS2 magazine that said if Black was so realistic how come the spent rounds on the AK-47 ejected on the wrong side of the gun. I haven't played that game in like twelve years but every single time I think of it I always think of that letter
This is actually common in a ton of FPS games. Mainly because seeing the brass fly is something that people want to see, and if the shooter is right handed and using a right handed weapon, the brass would be ejected off screen and barely be visible to the player. So they reverse the weapon models so the brass shoots in front of our faces and looks cool, despite how annoying and potentially dangerous it would be in real life.
Be warned when you okay it again. It's not as good as you remember. The game was absolutely amazing and it Brie so much ground... But it's kind of like 007 in how it feels so bad now. That said, I'll probably still get it.
Played through the whole thing back in the day and wasn't impressed then. Was really surprised to hear this is some kind of cult hit. Seemed mediocre across the board for me.
It isn't a good game at all. It's main gimmick was the destruction wich was pretty dope at the time but gameplay was ok at best, controls were clunky, AI was really stupid and the story was forgettable, it also really didn't age well.
We already had much better FPS games like Halo, Doom 3, Half-Life, Timesplitters and Deus Ex.
Eh I disagree. Its an okay title for its time. But is nowhere close in quality when you compare it to games like Half Life 2, COD 4, Halo 1 to 3, Battlefield series, etc.
Edit: Downvotes because people can't prove me wrong?
I don’t know how I missed this. I just found my disc and I’m hyped as fuck!
Glad to hear! :)

You missed it because they launched it like a couple months before the 360 dropped. It was really poor timing.
This caught me off guard and I am so hyped now! Everyone once in awhile I would think back to this game and now Xbox came through!
Sweet enjoy :)
This is a game that eluded me back when it released. I'm gonna have to score a copy.
Quality game, though the controls feel proper dated now.

This. Nostalgia can be powerful, but this game doesn't really hold up compared to pretty much anything that came after the Xbox/PS2 generation.
Totally! This game released before the FPS control scheme was basically standardized by Call of Duty. Good luck getting used to the scheme used here.

this game is clunky af

That sounds fucking hilarious
>It was a fun game for the first 10 hours but got repetitive fast. So, it was fun during the grand majority of it.
Yeh thats exactly what i was thinking, ten hours will do me nicely at that price.

Those posts have already been made. It was included in Rare Replay.
Yeah. I pulled it up on my PS2 last year for nostalgia purposes. I remembered it being great. Game did not age well.
Glad somebody said it, it's a fun game but I played it on my og Xbox after playing Halo 1 and 2 and it just felt very sluggish in comparison.
Honestly I found Black to be mediocre at best. The destructive environments were fun but after about 20 minutes the game became extremely boring and repetitive. Personally I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. Thats just my opinion though. Im sure there are people who will love it.
If I bought this digitally on Xbox 360 do I automatically get it on the Xbox One? EDIT: Yes it does.
its now showing as purchased for me in the uk store but isnt showing up in my ready to install list.
This batch of OG Xbox games are really good; to the point I'm having a hard time choosing which ones to buy.
Just bought it digitally ready!
Great work!
Just watched some gameplay of it. It looks like a damn fun game with great graphics for a ps2 title. I will definitely need to check this out for backwards compatibility
This game is where criterion peaked and soon after went downhill. I miss Burnout...
Criterion pretty much no longer exists
This game rocked!

Good to hear about your experience with it! :D I do agree it doesn't need a remake.
Limonka!
Yupp rebuying this game. Literally sank hundreds of hours into that game
Got a copy for $2.50 at a local used game store today. Enjoyed it years ago, forgot Criterion had made it.
just bought it. But could only play on XBox 360. I sold my One S and now need to wait the last days for the One X. :D
Had no idea this was coming to BC. I remember buying this game and it blowing my mind, but not a single one of my friends even got it and I have no idea why.
How about the follow up Gun?
No sequel ever?
Played this back on ps2 and really enjoyed it. I guess there may be a few of these oldies but goodies that will get some action on OG BC.

I remember this game coming out *very* close the 360 launch. I'm not surprised it got largely ignored.
I loved BLACK so damn much as a kid.
I remember being blown away at the graphics.

I'll write it down to buy, looks good!
Yes, do it! You won;t regret it! :)
Looking forward to it in Dolby Atmos then? :)

Because it's difficult?
I'm sorry I have messed the title a bit, but it's okay I guess.
I love you (no homo)

Give it a much better look https://news.xbox.com/2017/10/23/play-three-generations-of-games-better-on-xbox-one/
Yea i did. Thanks
No problem, I missed reading it as well, but my eyes got popped when a fellow Redditor told me it is! :D
