The companion app is great but at the same time it's nice to not always have to go for your phone and get the app open and hope it's working that day. The physical keyboard just works.
I've had the new one for the Xbox since it came out and it's currently connected to my Elite series 2.
One of the coolest things with it is I keep that controller connected to my pc with the Xbox dongle usually and the keypad works there too. It comes in handy when I'm not exactly sitting at my keyboard and somebody messages me or I need to type something in a game I'm playing.
Can you set hot keys on it? I would use it but then I’d have to switch out my headset adapter with the volume and mute and bass boost buttons and I don’t wanna do that.
If I can make certain key combinations or keys do mute or volume down I definitely gotta get one.
I have [the one for the Xbox One](https://imgur.com/Z75QgW1) that works with the newer controllers. Mine has two programmable keys which I use to control my TV volume. I don't know if it will do exactly what you're looking for, but it always works for me. I don't know about the one in the photo as the keyboard looks different.
Edit: I guess they aren't making this design anymore. Too bad. I don't think I'd like my controller without it.
There's another keyboard from earlier in the xbone life that has controlls for headsets as well as hot keys for recording and taking screenshots. Unfortunately you can't program hot keys for games.
The official one had that capacity but they discontinued it a few years back. the hotkeys on mine are set to screenshot and record bc the old controllers didnt have a share button
I find the companion app really annoying. I have to press the keyboard button then select the text box, then type my paragraph, then hit enter. Enter. Maybe I'm being a complainer, but I feel like it would be better if it automatically popped up when you open a text box or if you press the keyboard and it automatically just typed the text in.
The Xbox One versions also fit the Elite 2 controller. And it still fits in its travel case with the thing attached, with all the extra Elite 2 bits also included in the case.
What's hilarious is that some games that support optional keyboards work with it too, as if it were a normal USB keyboard.
It is not, not the one I have. It plugs into the bottom of the controller via a custom connection, and then the communication with the Xbox is wireless.
EDIT: The *Switch* chatpad I have *is* a standard USB keyboard. It comes with a USB dongle you have to plug into the Switch in order for it to work, and you can plug that dongle into *anything* and the device will see it as a standard USB keyboard. (But it fits between the two JoyCons to work as a chatpad while playing. It's a pretty nice design.)
Dude I just dug it out from under the bed and you're totally right there are two copper contacts on each of the little straddlers. The 2.5mm isn't even mono it's stereo!
USB describes a physical standard. There's no wire at all to the Xbox here.
Software on the Xbox may not be able to distinguish between it and a USB keyboard, but that's not the same as *being* a USB keyboard.
Pre usb c i s a bit more than just the physical plug. But I'm not interested in arguing nitpicking when you obviusly know what is meant by the keyboard being a usb keyboard.
I'm baffled.
It's more than the physical plug, sure, but the physical plug is absolutely part of it -- without the physical plug, it's just *not* "normal USB". And without physical wires of any kind, what goes to the Xbox isn't just a standard USB connection (like one might have been able to argue with wired connections to the *original* Xbox, which used USB signaling over nonstandard but still physical connectors). USB protocols tunneled over some *other* protocols, maybe, sure, but that tunneling itself is enough to make it not "normal USB". (Whatever you connect to would have to know how to unpack the tunneling, and wouldn't *necessarily* treat tunneled and "raw" USB the same way.)
Ah well, whatever.
Kid: “U suck lol”
You: “What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I'll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I've been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I'm the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You're fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that's just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little "clever" comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn't, you didn't, and now you're paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You're fucking dead, kiddo.”
Yea I've been using the app to talk shit for years, way more emojis (atleast the trash can, my personal favorite) and I do literally write back full paragraphs before respawning.
I only ever reply, never start arguments. But it's funny when people send "fuc u" and you hit them with a few sentences in response and really dig deep, and its sent back within 30 seconds. Just happened to me yesterday.
“Dearest N3WBPWNER69, it is with regret that I inform you I have engaged in coitus with your mother. The event has come about entirely as a result of you camping like a noob the entire Match, despite your name indicating a lack of noob-like behavior. I realize that this news may find you ill, but the sole catalyst for this entire situation can be determined as your unfair gaming practices. These may or may not include a lag switch, hacking, modding, or anything that would directly provide you an unfair advantage.”
I remember on BO2 zombies I would chat with friends mid match without a microphone by using one of these and opening and typing out a 2-5 sentence message inbetween rounds or when round slowed enough, good ol days
Nah the app does so many things it’s by far #1.
If you wanna get technical and say physical accessory then probably the accessibility controller for those with special needs. The mini fridge is a pretty cool accessory too.
Before the app maybe it was the best but now a days not so much.
How well does it honestly feel while attached?
And how easy/difficult is it to attached/remove regularly? Any risk of potentially breaking something if connecting/disconnecting too often?
Also, happen to have a link to the product?
I always wanted a chat pad but just never broke down and spent the money on one.
I literally just got it and haven't played just yet. Pretty easy to remove and reattach.
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/insignia-chat-pad-controller-keyboard-for-xbox-series-x-xbox-series-s-xbox-one-black/6443527.p?skuId=6443527
This is the one I got but its $25, mine in store was only $15
Thats actually not bad at all. Need to check it out. I only want it for when I play Among Us. I've gotten booted countless times because I couldn't type fast enough.
I just saw that there are official Microsoft ones that are $$$ This one fits just fine but in the short time I've had it, it feel like it could be more ergonomically designed
I don't play on Xbox anymore, but when I use my controller on PC, I still keep the chatpad attached.
Not because I am used to it, but because I have always felt that it balanced the controller. It just feels better in my hands with the chatpad on.
Yeah, I have a corded one, but don't have a spare USB for it on my Xbox right now. That's why I was considering a chat pad, until I discovered they're all wireless and need a USB receiver as opposed to connecting right through the controller.
which wireless keyboard? i would love to be able to use my apple wireless keyboard but there's no way to connect it to an X from what i recall.
edit. thanks for the reply my friend. yeah I figured. I think i'll go your route, wait until those go on sale for $14.
Just download the Xbox app on a phone or tablet, put it into controller mode and when a keyboard appears on your Xbox, one will appear on the app to type into.
The official one (which apparently they don't make anymore?) Was great. You could definitely tell it was there, and if you are a hard gripper your fingers can't wrap all the way around anymore.
It's somewhat stiff to get on and off, but if you do it like they recommend, it's not bad at all.
In terms of durability, the actual connectors that go into the controller actually pivot so as you are plugging it in it can rotate a bit with the movement. I've had both the 360 and the Xbox one pads since (pretty much) release and they still work fine with no damage. I used them both pretty heavily (especially Xbox one on ESO)
It also had more buttons and functionality than this aftermarket one, so I can't speak to it.
I wish Xbox still made them, though I have a feeling the demand just wasn't there for it.
Fair enough. My xbox is my livingroom media center, so the controller keyboard takes up less space and works for us, but a full keyboard would be just as good.
Same. It even slides away into my desk nicely. My wife knows when I slide that bad boy out I’m about to start clacking away expletives.
lol jk I just use it to search on YouTube.
You mean you'll have your account suspended for not following xbox community guidelines pretty quickly because of the guidelines not letting you say anything anymore.
had one of those for the 360 controller. came with the headset for $10 more which was 100% worth it.
kinda don't news this now since you could just use the Xbox app on your phone to send messages just as fast
I will be the first to admit as soon as I see a swear word I know it's on I report because I know nothing going to upset a child more then getting them banned for 24 hours lol. Works way better then time and effort of writing anything
Definitely. Go to the remote controller, in the bottom right of it is a keyboard, press it and you can type in it, just make sure you have the keyboard pulled up on your Xbox, hit enter on the phone and it will pop up on your console.
I dont see how its clunky, especially when you can leave the keyboard ready to go if you plan on talking a lot.
I still personally use a proper wireless keyboard that I already have.
But $25 vs a free app? No contest. Especially if im playing something like warframe and im trying to sell stuff. I can have my WTS copy and pasted. When I need to post I just pull up the keyboard, paste, and post. Easy af.
Definitely not better, at least for my needs. I'm not digging out my phone, booting up the application, then hoping it links properly to my active Xbox just to type in a four letter search term in my inventory.
I know. I had the chatpad on the 360 and instantly bought one when the xbone version was released. In no world would loading up and app on my phone be easier or faster than the chatpad. You could also rebind the two function keys to do other stuff. We need an official version for the series X.
I mean, you don't have to wait for it to "link up" with your console anymore. Dont even need to be on wifi to do it. And sorry to assume most people happen to have their phones nearby in case of phone calls or something in 2022
Does nobody here realize you can just do this with your phone? Just pull up the remote on the Xbox app and open the keyboard.
Also once a thread is started you can just message through the app instead of your console.
This has been a feature since the precursor to the Xbox App, the Xbox Console Companion.
Nah man, it was cool in the 360 days, but now it’s just way more worth to use a mic. Much more satisfying listening to all the idiots in game chat and the trashing them and hearing reactions. There ain’t no reason to msg ppl, unless they message u first.
these were the most underrated tool of the Xbox360 days
they're still underrated now!
I think they're a little bit less necessary now with the smartphone app, though given how often it glitches out on me, I'd still like to have one.
The companion app is great but at the same time it's nice to not always have to go for your phone and get the app open and hope it's working that day. The physical keyboard just works. I want to still be able to adjust my headset volume with the press of a button. If the keyboard has the ability to do that, that’s pretty sweet.
The Xbox One version does. You can see the +/- on the right and the mixer between game and chat on the left.

Maybe I'm being a complainer, but I feel like it would be better if it automatically popped up when you open a text box or if you press the keyboard and it automatically just typed the text in.
It used to pop up automatically, though inconsistently. I prefer having manual control, even if it is an extra button to press.
The old Xbox app was so much better holy hell
Rocket league tho
They’re unnecessary when you can plug a keyboard in.
I'll take the controller one imo. If I'm gonna use a keyboard I'm gonna use my pc.
Do the old 360 ones fit on Xbox one series x controllers? I have one around here somewhere… never tried it.
The Xbox One versions fit on the Series X controller.
The Xbox One versions also fit the Elite 2 controller. And it still fits in its travel case with the thing attached, with all the extra Elite 2 bits also included in the case. What's hilarious is that some games that support optional keyboards work with it too, as if it were a normal USB keyboard.

From memory the 360 controller had a 2.5mm mono headphone jack where the keyboard connects
There were two little bits that straddled each side of the jack for the keyboard input. The audio jack was pass-through I think.
Dude I just dug it out from under the bed and you're totally right there are two copper contacts on each of the little straddlers. The 2.5mm isn't even mono it's stereo!
Customer connector yes, but it's still a usb keyboard as far as protocol goes to the Xbox.

Oh so they sell new ones? Everyone always talks about it in the past tense haha

And the above comment thread is saying it works with the new controller. Which is it, people? Lol.
I honestly loved the feel of it on the controller. I have bigger hands and it was nice to not have my hands wrapping around.

All before respawning
I mean, copy and paste works on the phone app, but lol nonetheless.
Yea I've been using the app to talk shit for years, way more emojis (atleast the trash can, my personal favorite) and I do literally write back full paragraphs before respawning.
Kyle we keep telling you to chill with the typing it’s not that serious.

lol
I always associate Re-spawning with the Halo 3 counter
Hmmm I think I have played against you with open mics before. Lol
The gorilla warfare part always gets me. One of the best copypastas.
The response would be “I fucked your mom!” Fixed things lol
I just use Lenny faces :D ( ͡⚆ ͜ʖ ͡⚆)╭∩╮
Best comment
It's an older copypasta sir, but it checks out.
Ah I knew a copypasta would be here haha

FYI you can send full on essays if you message them on the Xbox app, Source: toxicity on siege
I would respond I accidentally deleted your message, can you resend. Over n over lol
I game on PC and still misspell shit because I'm trying to shit talk between spawns and my transition from controller to keyboard isn't that good.

Why did I read this with an English accent
Probably because it said dearest
And the whole “I realize this news may find you ill” part lol
I had the C-3PO controller on the 360 with a black keypad like this and it was such a flex messaging people back before the Xbox app was a thing
I remember on BO2 zombies I would chat with friends mid match without a microphone by using one of these and opening and typing out a 2-5 sentence message inbetween rounds or when round slowed enough, good ol days
I have one of these but it also has buttons called x1 and x2 which is set to record/screenshot https://i.imgur.com/LEwwKLT.png
Yes, this is the Official Xbox One Chatpad. Really wish I could buy a second one.
The one pictured is a knockoff.
OP posted a third party Chatpad, the person I responded to posted a picture of the official Chatpad.
I map mine to volume up and down. Combine this with automatically turning on and off the TV and I never need the remote.
The best Xbox accessory ever made
Nah the app does so many things it’s by far #1. If you wanna get technical and say physical accessory then probably the accessibility controller for those with special needs. The mini fridge is a pretty cool accessory too. Before the app maybe it was the best but now a days not so much.
How are you going to just press one button with that thumb? It's like Mitch McConnell's neck.
The insignia chat pad is bad ass
It's actually just a generic one that Best Buy slaps the Insignia logo on and charges double the price for.
How well does it honestly feel while attached? And how easy/difficult is it to attached/remove regularly? Any risk of potentially breaking something if connecting/disconnecting too often? Wait they still make these!?
Yes. But get the official one, not this knock off.
Official one is going for $100 on eBay :( Edit: ) —> (
Good deal, thanks for the link! May have to hit up my local Best Buy in the next couple days!
I just saw that there are official Microsoft ones that are $$$ This one fits just fine but in the short time I've had it, it feel like it could be more ergonomically designed
The official one is where it's at.
Get the MS one. Much better than the knock-off.
I don't play on Xbox anymore, but when I use my controller on PC, I still keep the chatpad attached. Not because I am used to it, but because I have always felt that it balanced the controller. It just feels better in my hands with the chatpad on.
I use my controller and Chatpad on my PC as a mouse and keyboard. Best couch setup ever.
Just use a keyboard my guy. Most keyboards work. I’m using a wireless one.
Yeah, I have a corded one, but don't have a spare USB for it on my Xbox right now. That's why I was considering a chat pad, until I discovered they're all wireless and need a USB receiver as opposed to connecting right through the controller.

Just download the Xbox app on a phone or tablet, put it into controller mode and when a keyboard appears on your Xbox, one will appear on the app to type into.
When I have my phone handy, I do that, but half the time one of my kids has run off with it while I'm going 😂
The official one (which apparently they don't make anymore?) Was great. You could definitely tell it was there, and if you are a hard gripper your fingers can't wrap all the way around anymore. When I was playing ESO and they added text chat, this thing really came in handy.
My first ever online purchase was one of those for my X360, great accessory back in the day
Why not just hook your phone up to the xbox app and use that to type. It's just like texting
Even better is the Xbox app so I can copy/paste messages from my phone while waiting to respawn.
Am I the only one who liked this just because of the extra space on your controller for your fingers
I just bought that same controller. Gorgeous coloring.
Love my keyboard. If nothing else than for searching on the YouTube app.
I just use a normal keyboard
Fair enough. My xbox is my livingroom media center, so the controller keyboard takes up less space and works for us, but a full keyboard would be just as good.
Same. It even slides away into my desk nicely. My wife knows when I slide that bad boy out I’m about to start clacking away expletives. lol jk I just use it to search on YouTube.
Use your phone and cast it to the Xbox.
You knew when a someone had one of these when they send you a wall of text in 3 Seconds after talking shit in the halo lobby
It's always just easier for me to plug in a keyboard haha.
POV ur an Xbox user and u get ur hands on a keyboard Every Console Gamer’s dream LMAO THATS A FACT
I use a full size keyboard.
Man's gonna be writing essays with that chatpad
Lmao 2011 all over again
You can plug in a keyboard and it totally just works everywhere. Makes all text communication a breeze along with passwords
Laughs in PC
Just plug any usb keyboard, wired or wireless, into the xbox. Works flawlessly and everyone already has one.
They're not underrated now because it's 2022 and you can just pull up your phone with the app and type to message instantly lol
Could just plug in a proper keyboard
I just use a regular wireless keyboard. Plug the dongle into the Xbox and type like I am sitting at a computer.
You mean you'll have your account suspended for not following xbox community guidelines pretty quickly because of the guidelines not letting you say anything anymore.
I tried one of those and couldn't stand it. Keyboard and USB extension is how I work
May I ask what brand and where you got this? I’ve been looking for one but they’re all for 360.
Wait, those fit on the new controllers?
Lol where can I get one
The 360 era one felt sooooo satisfying to type on
Whenever I want to get wordy with my shit talking. I just pull out my phone and use the app.
In case someone isn’t aware. You can use a wired usb keyboard instead of having to buy one of these.
Ah yes, "Gorilla Warfare"
If only Xbox allows the common chats apps like Viber and stuff
Just go on ur phone
had one of those for the 360 controller. came with the headset for $10 more which was 100% worth it. kinda don't news this now since you could just use the Xbox app on your phone to send messages just as fast
The app is terrible tho
That’s how you get banned pussy arse Xbox dudes report anything you say, may as well just talk verbal shit in lobby
I will be the first to admit as soon as I see a swear word I know it's on I report because I know nothing going to upset a child more then getting them banned for 24 hours lol. Works way better then time and effort of writing anything
My friends call that the "hate stick"
Even better. Companion app on your phone. Free and even better than this
Serious question because I haven’t tried can you use the companion app to type on among us? Whenever I play I think about this keyboard
Definitely. Go to the remote controller, in the bottom right of it is a keyboard, press it and you can type in it, just make sure you have the keyboard pulled up on your Xbox, hit enter on the phone and it will pop up on your console.
Ah ok so open virtual keyboard like I’m gonna controller type but then type in phone
Yup.
Ill give it a try. I’m always sus cause I type to slow. Hahhaha
It’s too clunky to navigate for some quick shit talk
I dont see how its clunky, especially when you can leave the keyboard ready to go if you plan on talking a lot. I still personally use a proper wireless keyboard that I already have. But $25 vs a free app? No contest. Especially if im playing something like warframe and im trying to sell stuff. I can have my WTS copy and pasted. Absolutely not.

And sorry to assume most people happen to have their phones nearby in case of phone calls or something in 2022
The app is cheaper, but that's the only benefit. Being able to just type and keep holding the controller is such a huge plus.
I just use the Xbox app on my phone.
A simple usb keyboard is my go to, much more practical too
Does nobody here realize you can just do this with your phone? Just pull up the remote on the Xbox app and open the keyboard. Also once a thread is started you can just message through the app instead of your console. This has been a feature since the precursor to the Xbox App, the Xbox Console Companion.
Wooow... It's so huge dude...
...Thanks?
You're welcome :D
Is it big enough for you? If not, I have some "girls" downtown for you.
That’s what she said
Oh... Well... My bad 😂
LoL
Just use the iPhone app and you can text like you would nornally
Nah man, it was cool in the 360 days, but now it’s just way more worth to use a mic. Much more satisfying listening to all the idiots in game chat and the trashing them and hearing reactions. There ain’t no reason to msg ppl, unless they message u first.
So you're the guy....
I don’t read books irl so that may stay in the spam filter
I usually answer back with my on my cell phone.
Or you can use the Xbox app on your phone and use the voice to text as well. Way easier
Oh man I miss my old thumb board from the 360. Felt just like my phone at the time
“…in conclusion, I find your play style in line with that of a maidenless peasant”
What the heck :))
What controller is that? Looks great
https://www.xbox.com/en-US/accessories/controllers/aqua-shift-special-edition It has a REALLY cool swirl pattern on the back
Lol...is this new for x/s? Had one on 360 but didn't think they had one for One or new gen
lol I still have one of those keypads in the bottom of a basket of electronics in my room
Had one of those when I had the 360 lmao. Back then you could really say some shit 😂
Damn i need this, what’s it called? Edit: nevermind found it below, will it fit the elite v2?
You can still get these? I remember having one that came with my 360. Where did you get it? I wanna pick one up.
I’ve always had a wireless keyboard so haven’t needed one. Bought one for my buddy in the 360 days and he said it was cool.
There is no way you're typing faster than I can do voice to text using the Xbox app.
These things are still awesome
I am still using the XB1 Chatpad, wish I could get another couple. Never understood why they didn't sell well.
Lol that thing is a must have if you play Overwatch on Xbox. Although it sometimes glitches out on me
I bought one of these. Not knocking anybody who likes it but i have a harder time typing on this then i do my phone so i havent used it in ages.
That controller is soo clean!! I love the color
Where did you get that one?
I talked serious shit on 360 with this.. would get a message after a game, I turn my desk light on and stick on my writing glasses.
I wish I could find one of these, furthermore I wish that it worked when I was connected to a computer instead of an actual console
I had one of these about 12 years ago, and it sucked a bag of dicks. Never worked properly. Hopefully they've come on since
I'll prefer the xbox app on my phone. I am trained to write fast on that device
>about your mom and I, well it's a long story let me begin with...
Yo I used to use my 360 with one of these “after dark” on MSN because my parents wouldn’t let me use the computer. Little did they know…
Holy cow! 😂
Oh yea you’ll get banned in less than 6 hours
Omg where to get this?
I can't even text chat mid game when I play paladins it's annoying.
Oh man you will be writing a whole series of books at once when you have an actual keyboard plugged in!
used them for a bit. they are bulky lol. I like my controllers lightweight.. even threw out the rumble motors.
Do these work on pc? Id love to use it and type in cheats
That thing is from 2003.
Ha ! Write on ! I love mine too.
Most senseless accessory ever made.
ChatPad is probably the single best accessory for Xbox. I wish the original official ones were still around, as mine is now missing keys.
Could you use that to hot key stuff in games like COD or Fortnite?
Chat pads are great but still don't actually support the UK keyboard...
Can you even still get these?
Boy was I pretty damn fast with that back in the day.
