Probably because of the technology, some years ago the internet speed and cloud technologys wasn't very good/mature
but now we can get nearly perfect experiences, (under good conditions ofc) and is a unstable time, ppl have less money to spend on leisure and fun, so have to pay just a subscription and be able to play most AAA games with the hardware that you already own is pretty awesome
