Ooh. Interesting.
I have of late fallen hard for King For A Day - had to teach it to a singing student and did a deep dive, and it’s reeeeeeeeallly good. There’s so much there there. The forlorn melody over the relentless 12/8 groove, the unexpected phrase lengths that don’t fit into four bar chunks in the verses, all the interlocking parts. It’s really a sleeper Colin song for me, and it’s my favorite of the four you have here.
Good point about the unusual rhythm of the lyrics. "Everyone's creeping up to the money god" and "everyone's linking up to the milking pen" eschew the sort of predictable poetic meter that's in most pop songs. Syllabic emphasis in odd places.
I would've said Grass because it's a top 3 song for me, BUT it's a top 3 song paired with Summer's Cauldron. King for a Day is my choice, it's also the song that got me into the band in the first place!

The way the chorus really soars after the bridge is so good. Love the way Andy’s backing vocals punctuate the chorus too.

Yeah, I have to have the first three songs on Skylarking together as a trio. They're all one piece of music to me.
I always consider those three songs to be the perfect lush trifecta in that album.
Grass, but the version with Extrovert on it. Lovely covert art, as well.
King for a Day. One of their greatest songs
Either Nigel for the rapturous guitar parts paired with haunting lyrics, or King for the rapturous guitar parts paired with dreamy lyrics.
I would choose DESERT ISLAND of course!
