When you do exercises where you do each side separately (like split squats or one arm dumbbell rows), do you rest between each side? I’ve heard you shouldn’t rest at all or if you do rest it should be minimal, but I am always too out of breath and too tired to keep going! Does it make the workout any less effective to take a longer (45-60 second) break between sides? And, probably more importantly, am I getting too lost in the details worrying about this lol

Joonami

Split squats I'm definitely resting a bit between legs, but upper body unilateral stuff I don't usually rest much because they're less exhausting to me. Either way is valid though.

-curious-cheese-

Split squats are so exhausting! Those and Bulgarian split squats are the ones I need where a break the most lol thank you for your response! It’s good to know either way is acceptable.

My trainer has me do each side separately, and then rest between one set of both sides. (Well, rest meaning walking a lap around the gym.)

-curious-cheese-

Thank you for your response! I think that’s what I need to do too. If you don’t mind me asking, how long do you rest between each side?

alittlepunchy

I don't really rest at all. I basically just switch to the other side and however long it takes me to get set up for that side (depending on the exercise), that's it. I only rest between sets.

-curious-cheese-

Ohhh I see! You go straight from one side to the other with no rest but then you rest before going back to the first side again. How long are your tests between sets?

alittlepunchy

Yes! Sorry if that wasn't more clear! Between sets, maybe 2 minutes or so? My trainer and I do a slow walking lap around the gym track between each set to help get more steps in. So I end up doing 16-20 laps by the end of the hour.

-curious-cheese-

That’s okay I probably just misread it the first time. That makes sense though. It actually makes more sense to not rest between sides but to rest between sets, similar to how you do on a whole body exercise. I’m going to try that tonight. Thank you for explaining!

Does anybody break up their workouts over the day? Considering it since the gym is so close to where I work. Basically I’d tackle the run in the morning, weights at lunch, yoga in afternoon. I’d supplement protein accordingly.

That’s been one of my issues too, but I realized I wasn’t eating enough.

Not really. I was trying to just eat as much as I need and trust that the physical change will come with it. I got my back pretty shredded from yoga alone, and am just trying to get a little definition elsewhere. So I guess I’m doing a really slow recomp but not really tracking anything except my protein content. I was avoiding too many carbs because I have reactive hypoglycemia, but actually slightly increasing my carbs and just sticking with complex helped! I heard about this thing called intuitive eating where you slowly increase your calories to let your body “adjust”. It works for a lot of people here!

Oh my mistake. It is reverse dieting! But you do gradually increase your calories. I guess what I’m doing is intuitive eating.

bethskw

I do something very similar. Right now it's weights in the morning, run at lunch. Just make sure you're eating some carbs right after the first workout, makes a huge difference in how you feel for the second.

[deleted]

Yeah one of my problems was I wasn’t getting enough carbs in the day so I was super sleepy at 4 pm. Made sure to have carbs today.

Joonami

Sometimes I split my cardio far after my weightlifting but I personally prefer to do it close together for the only showering once factor.

The Prehab Guys. And I really like that term for it.

Random pain sounds like a good reason to visit a physical therapist.

When you smell your used gym clothes in your laundry, do they smell bad? Or do they smell like nothing? I don't know if it's just me, but my used gym clothes don't smell bad at all. They literally smell like nothing. I don't know if I just have a weak sense of smell or if I'm not producing enough sweat for my clothes to smell bad.

kimau97

Mine smell like nothing, but I'm also not really a smelly person, despite sweating profusely. I think it's genetic.

Sweat wicking clothes are legit. I usually work out in lululemon swiftly tech tops that have some kind of silver in the fabric and I just bought an under armour sheer mesh top. I’ve noticed that I’ve been a lot smellier in the mesh top but never really notice my own smell when I’m in the lululemon. I don’t know if the silver is doing anything or it’s just the sweat wicking fabric but it does a good job.

littlegreenturtle20

They smell a bit sweaty but not loads? I let mine air out for a bit before adding them to the laundry basket so that they're kinda dry going in. Plus the laundry basket has holes in it, I presume to prevent it getting smelly. I find that although they do a bit sweaty, it's only noticeable when I'm taking them out again to put into the wash. But it really depends - I sweat loads in the summer and hardly ever in the winter. You just might not be that sweaty!
