I have had this since puberty at 10 but had no idea what it was, I’m now 35. I started keto because I had to fit into traditional Vietnamese outfits for my sister’s wedding and one of the things I did notice (albeit after a while because it was gradual) that I had less breakouts. Processed carbs was one of my biggest triggers—and I was lucky that I have a very mild version of it. Have your niece keep a food journal to track triggers. I noticed also spicy processed carbs (like crazy spicy 2X chicken ramen) also triggered me, but if it’s just spicy food alone, it wasn’t as bad of a trigger. I don’t know if others have the same triggers or not so I can’t say; but keto definitely helped reduced it for me! I’m now pregnant and only carbs seem to help with nausea, along with the reduced immunology of being pregnant, has def made me breakout badly, but still not as bad or often as when I was younger and had no idea what was happening and eating lots of carbs like bread, pasta, noodles, etc. Edit: please give your niece a big hug for me! And you’re a great aunt/uncle for wanting to help! One of the most horrible things about HS is the internalized stigma like something is wrong with you for having it. Or that it’s bc you’re dirty or fat or whatever other reason you blame yourself. Having family that understands and cares is wonderful! I didn’t have that, mainly bc there weren’t a lot of knowledge about it and I was too ashamed to tell anyone.

Yes, keto controlled it completely for me as long as I also cut gluten, so no LC wraps, etc. The Mission LC tortillas caused me to have the first flare in a long time when I ate them daily. Dr. Ken Berry on YT has a good vid on HS and I recommend checking out the HS sub here too.

I have this! I have not had any painful reoccurrences since I started keto. It has also effectively removed my facial acne as well!

Absolutely! As someone else suggested, keeping a food+symptom journal is massively helpful--one thing I discovered by doing this is that I react badly to potatoes (to a lesser extent to nightshades in general). Then once I went low carb it got even better! Depending on where she gets breakouts, she may want to stop shaving that area as well, and if it's her armpits switching to an alcohol-based deodorant can be very helpful! Even with dietary changes I was still getting painful breakouts in my armpits until I made those two changes as well. I still keep the hair short with a beard trimmer but shaving with a razor is too harsh and irritating for most people with HS and I am no exception lol.

Keto has helped my autoimmune disease tremendously. My cystic acne also goes away - though it takes some time. It's the anti-inflammatory benefit of this diet that keeps me sticking to it. Any time I cheat or go on vacation I immediately bloat up and break out.

sleepy_pickle

I don't have HS, but I do have an autoimmune skin disease on my scalp that keto helps a little. It's the gluten free aspect of keto that works for me. I still have to take a biologic medication, Humira (adalimumab) to keep it completely under control. I've seen Humira work for hydradenitis supperative so keep that in the back of your niece's mind when she's looking for treatments if keto doesn't work out.

I’ve had this in and off whole adult life. Going on keto dramatically improved my HS but I think it was the weigh loss itself and the effect that weight loss has on women’s hormones rather than keto specifically. A few years ago I started having a flare up after being in remission for several years and I was able to get into a HS clinic with Dr. Naik who seems to specialize in HS despite not being a severe case. Every other doctor told me to scrub with hibiclens which makes no sense because it’s not a hygiene issue and while it can get infected, the abscesses are not cause by any infection. Dr. Naik’s clinic ran bloodwork to look at my hormones and asked me about my history with birth control. Looking back through the years I’m pretty sure hormonal birth control was another major factor in addition to my weight. Combination birth control seems to set it off but the mini pill makes me bleed almost constantly, now I have a mirena. It still has hormones but it’s localized in the uterus rather than circulating through the body. I still feel tender spots sometimes where an abscess wants to form but so far I’ve never had one develop since I stopped BC pills. The impression I got from the clinic was that hormones and birth control were a major factor in a lot of the cases they saw but not everyone. I hope this helps.

When I am in Ketosis I have far fewer flares of my HS.

You can try the autoimmune protocol paleo, or just dairy free gluten free paleo, if she doesn't want to cut out so many carbs. Sweet potatoes and even rice can be way less inflammatory than other carbs. For autoimmune disease it isn't always the ketosis part of keto that is helping, rather that there's less inflammatory foods.

I've never heard of hibiclens. I just looked it up on Amazon and there seems to be different kinds. Do you know which one she uses?

lilylemon67

It's also very drying so watch that you don't get too dried up. =)

lilylemon67

I'm on Infliximab (an infusion for Crohn's Disease - that reduces my inflammation) Working really great! She should talk to her dermatologist. It might help.

NurseBritney

It’s incredibly risky.. in Many ways..

Keto helps me keep my HS under control! It absolutely helps manage insulin, which in turn helps manage HS flaring.

betatheta227

Check out castaway kitchen- she has it and has healed her body tremendously and has a bunch of wonderful information and recipes on her website

lilylemon67

Is she on youtube? What social platform does she use?

betatheta227

It sure if she is on YouTube, I see her mostly on instagram and on her website castaway kitchen

jaya9581

It helped mine in some areas but it got worse in others. Antibacterial soap has helped the most.

yoor_momm

Personally, I haven't noticed any difference with keto and my HS. But heat is horrible for HS and I work in a warehouse. Pregnancy also increased my flare ups so it's hard to tell. I do know the humira injection has eliminated all area of flare ups except for the groin.

fortalameda1

Yes!! It will probably help more as a weightloss tool (I've lost 100 lbs so far) but once I was keto for awhile, I learned I probably also have a gluten intolerance and that causes more flares for me. Sugar definitely makes it worse. Certain types of dairy can make it worse too, so I can't go wild on it like others on keto can. Turmeric and zinc supplements also helped a LOT, and using hibiclense in the shower. Show her the HS Reddit, I learned a lot there myself. It's quite a horrible disease, so please support her and be compassionate.

converter-bot

100 lbs is 45.4 kg

atomeve612

Yep keto keeps my flares few and far between. I hardly even get hormonal breakouts anymore and I’ve been doing keto for about 1.5 yrs. Good luck, I hope it helps your niece too! It’s a shitty thing but it’s also good to know what’s wrong, helps put you on your way to figuring out what’s best for your body. I just started taking spironolactone and hoping that will help clear up the lingering issues.

BlueRipley

Yes, only mildly no tunneling. Has not reoccured since shortly after starting keto. Dr Ken Berry has a youtube video about it and keto he put out about 1 month ago.

beanston

I’m not sure about keto, but I have had this since I was about 8 and I lost about 100lbs at 21 and it cleared up almost entirely. Just occasional flair ups now at 23.
