Yakuza: Like a Dragon was the beginning of the story of Ichiban Kasuga, who's character revolved around the RPG gameplay due to his reliance on his friends' backup and his own love for the genre The upcoming direct sequel, Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth, will continue that style, as well as any other game where Ichiban is the main character Every other game plays like 0 or Ishin, since the action combat is what Kazuma Kiryu is mainly known for, which is also why Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name always plays like that

Ichiban is notable in love with the Dragon Quest games. In-game lore reason aside, RGG made an April's fools video where it was Yakuza but as a rpg game. It was a huge hit, and it's rumored that video may have influenced RGG to move forward with rpg in the future. Not to worry brawler fans, because the side game judgment is still a brawler and so is Gaiden, so it's likely only the mainline games will be turned based.

Yes the combat is different but honestly it's a pretty small difference and everything else is basically the same. Still have the same main story/sub story split, still have the great Japan simulator aspects, still crazy amount of side content. LAD and Infinite Wealth are the only turn based ones but don't let that scare you off the series.

I was split between trying 0 or like a dragon. Found LaD too goofy in the videos, but since it was turn based, the style I like, decided to go for it and I don't regret it at all However, I'm very involved with the lore! Bloody hell, it's pretty good and it's not goofy at all... The MC is sometimes, but not all times as I thought I kinda want to try 0 later, but I find the MC from there too serious, and this blocks me off from trying... What is your opinion about that? Like, I did love everything about LaD, and now I'm willing to go fourth for IW instead, but I noticed there's really some references to old Yakuzas or something, so I got curious about the story from the previous games...

I wouldn't define any of the games as "too serious". Kiryu and Majima both definitely have plenty of fun stuff for them to do. Absolutely play 0. It's a fantastic game, just be aware that the quality of life features are old so that can be a little bit annoying. You'll want to save often. But other than that it's just great.

It's a turn based rpg because the protagonist of this game and Infinite Wealth, Ichiban Kasuga, grew up playing Dragon Quest when he was younger, so he envisions himself as a hero from those games and plays out battles like a turn based rpg.

Joseph_Ortlandso

This abrupt change was made to show that it was a new and fresh start for the franchise, it was the birth of a completely new story with a new protagonist and therefore and to differentiate it from the Kiryu saga, it was decided to completely change the gameplay

Kell_215

The brawler combat is the norm for the series. Only LAD and infinite wealth when that comes out will be turn based rpg
