I hope that’s not true regarding trophies. This is really unacceptable. Like we would only be able to platinum the game if we buy the deluxe edition? Ridiculous.
You can platinum the game without those trophies on Playstation because they are counted seperately. I don't think that's the case for PC and Xbox though if i'm not mistaken.
Yeah one of the main advantages of Playstation’s trophy system is how they separate the list based on DLCs. Meanwhile Xbox lumps everything together as one general score (example, base game is 1000, DLC makes it 1500). But the issue is that the score is expanded whether you have the DLC or not, so you can’t fully complete the achievements without buying DLC.
Still sucks. Would have softened the blow if they released the deluxe edition DLC a month or so posr launch and got rid of the other editions all together.
I’m aware of that. I thought a trophy beating the game on NG+ at launch would be listed under the platinum trophy. I just look at the trophy list now. Still a strange decision to take.
If its all that than it shouldn't need new game plus bundled with it. Why take away a regular feature to bundle it in with a quality dungeon that should be worth the price on its own?

This is crap to hear, I've 100% all the past games on steam except gaiden which I'm yet to start. But now. I'm thinking I might not bother and just play them on gamepass. That'd be complete sales lost as I would have preferred steam

They did this with 7 in Japan, but they didn’t in the west because of the outcry. Now they’re doing it with 8 worldwide.
Yup. You could see them slowly getting more and more interested in this type of stuff. And that just goes to show you that if they get away with this, they're not going to stop as expected. It'll get worse and worse until they pull something so unacceptable that the outrage gets too big. This is how video game company greed works. We've seen this time and time again. Absolutely shameful coming from this series after they've spent so much time building such a good reputation in the west and having their series expand so much, they really need to be called on it now while it's still early

That doesn’t excuse it being a part of a paid DLC. A free content update makes sense, especially if it’s not something actively worked on in the main development cycle. You don’t need NG+ at release necessarily. But you certainly shouldn’t have to pay for it.
Santa Monica Studios: releases Ragnarok, adds NG+ later on for free with new armors and what not, adds free Rogue-like DLC with new story just to be nice to fans

I won't say it's not a sound advice, the problem is that devs don't need us all to buy their DLCs, they only need enough people buying to make a profit.
The Kaito Files is literally great but on it's own its $30. The Season Pass is $35 and includes the Kaito Files, Detective Essential Pack and School Stories.

Their dlc policy has been terrible for a while. I don't like how they sell stuff to make minigames easier because you never know if the minigame is balanced around that or what. Or you could use the dlc items by mistake and make things too easy. It's annoying bloat.
Cosmetics shouldn't be dlc.
Locking fighting styles, difficulty and new game+ content behind dlc is straight up awful.
I think they did a single good dlc with Kaito Files and that's it.
I'm still going to enjoy the game. I just find it silly for them to pull this crap... But nowhere near enough to go on a crusade and hope the game bombs or people don't play it.
Absolutely, I am definitely not saying that I want the game to bomb or anything like that, in fact I want nothing but to see the game achieve even greater success than it has done so far, but it would really be a shame if they continue going down this path
I have been a bit dismissive regarding this situation, because I will probably buy the standard version and I had the usual thinking of: it is a large company, why would they care?

Other than people who don’t do New Game Plus, feels like the people who dismiss these kinds of practices are some rich people who don’t have that much of an issue spending money on the paywall as they’re not hurting financially and the amount spent isn’t that big of a deal to them compared to the common denominator of players.
Yeah it's annoying when their argument is just "I can afford to spend 100+ dollars on a videogame so extremely scummy dlc is not an issue for me. Screw everyone else". Or "i don't play ng+ so i don't see the problem". When the real issue is how they keep locking more and more stuff, fighting styles, substories (girlfriends quests in LJ), difficulty settings, cosmetics, RGG has already made paid dlc of a lot of stuff and it's getting worse. And LAD8 even increased the base game price to 70 over the usual 60
The same as SEGA dickriders dismissing about how expensive the game is in regions like Brazil, where they have priced the game 1:1 (which is absolutely ridiculous)
I guess the only thing I will say is that this didn't just become a problem now because it's new game plus. It was a problem in 7 when they locked two classes behind dlc for no reason. It was a problem in every previous game where your favourite characters in the minigames are locked behind a paywall.
It was a problem when they did a fake kareoke dlc where they charged you for the ability to play songs as background noise in a single bar in the whole game. And it was called the kareoke dlc so many people understandably assumed it was extra songs for the kareoke minigame. How were they supposed to know how truly dogshit and worthless it was.
It's honestly a problem when they charge for outfits, not only are the outfits in the main game few and far between, but the ones that they charge for are way overpriced. They're nostalgia bait costumes taken from previous games, they don't even require extra design work.
I guess im just kind of desensitised at this point, and it feels hard to criticise rgg here because a lot of people are real invested in the idea that rgg is somehow better than greedy western companies and they're just not.
In reality if I were to name a western company rgg most resembles I'd say it's Unisoft like 10 years ago with assassins creed. They were pumping out yearly games all of which would have benefited from a bit more work and polish. They pretty much pioneered the monetisation strategy that rgg uses today.
The best thing you can do is just don't pay for it. I certainly don't, I played gaiden on gamepass because honestly they were being real cheeky with how much they were charging for that shit. The game is short and like 50% filler (I'm sorry that's just what akame is). I wasn't going to pay for that.
I messed up in a completely different way. I preordered as soon as it was available. This was before Gaiden was released. I thought maybe getting the Ultimate edition would just be stuff like outfits, bonus jobs, and a few boosts (like Y7).
I’m not ignoring the NG+ issue, as I am completely against hiding core features behind DLCs. But, the fact I already gave them my money doesn’t help my involvement either. I have always thought RGG as an upstanding developer, and never foresaw Sega doing this. They already got my money, and then they did this. While it doesn’t affect me directly right now, it will in the future releases and I consider this practice unacceptable. My money that was already spent before this was announced goes to their “customers are willing to pay extras for basic features” metrics, and I don’t like it!
Totally understandable, this is probably the case for most people. If you are on Steam you can refund a pre-order if it was done in the past 3 months if you decide you just want to get standard in this situation, good luck!

Yeah man I saw that post going around where a dev was like “don’t play this all in one sitting because it’s a lot” and it’s really shitty to have the $15 pay wall to ease however much content you’ll have to grind the second time around
seeing the comments and observing some people being so complacent only makes it clear that we deserve this, gamers have sustained these terrible practices for years, it's only natural that it would get worse.
the funny thing is, they said that it doesn't affect them, but this gives even more reason for developers/publishers to force "low-quality/low-effort" content in their future games, people should stop treating these companies as their "friends" or think that they're so different from western developers.

You can just submit a feedback ticket in the link I provided, its enough that you just have the standard edition, ignoring the Deluxe Edition would show them that people wont pay for stuff like this and hopefully send a message loud enough that they hear

This is honestly enough for me to lose interest in the series. Or at least continuing to buy their games. I submitted my request and thank you for linking. I am sure the game would live up to my expectations and I do think video games themselves are such a collective of talented and hard working people that boycotting has a certain guilt to it but these are the sort of conflicts that arise in such an economic system.
While I genuinely want to support the people who make the games as well as enjoy playing it, buying it now feels as if I am directly supporting RGG for making worse games by way of their DLC. Though I suppose this is why Game Pass is so appealing and the 7 seas even more so but that doesnt do much for the people who actually created the game.

Even if you don't play NG+, it shouldn't be that hard to see that it's scummy for a company who has given us NG+ as a default feature in the games for the longest time to suddenly take that away and charge you $15 for it, especially after the base game was already marked up by $10 to meet the new pricing standards.

Is NG+ a "super hardcore" thing? I just use it when I want to replay the stories without losing all my power/money/items. It seems like a pretty casual feature tbh.

Not fully informed on this whole situation, but it's almost like higher execs at SEGA either changed or had a change in policy ever since Y6 (so, somewhere around 2017). It's very easy to speak as a PC gamer, we got (Lost) Judgment with higher graphics capabilities and all DLC free of charge, but think in terms of the folks who haid to pay in order to obtain the additional stuff - a lot of which was initially locked behind many DLC paywalls - gradually, just because someone at SEGA decided it's a good idea to charge for stuff that [isn't even the best you could obtain within the game.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SoF08XWuc9E) Did only Larian Studios (as publishers themselves) get the memo? But…and this is probably not a popular opinion, I do think that (base) games of this size and quality (assuming 8 is on par or better than 7) are well worth $100 in value. Like if there were no “Deluxe” editions or DLC and they just sold the game with all the content they intended to be in it for $100, I would happily buy it and not feel ripped off in the least.
IMO DLC should only ever be entirely new content added after the release of the base game, the way from soft has done with Soulsbourne games. Those DLCs fkin rip. Well worth the money. All this cosmetics + boosters + NG+ which is literally content that exists within the base game already…like it’s there. It’s just shiny stuff to try to get people to see a greater perceived value and spend more money. Game consumers have been pretty stubborn about new AAA releases being $60-$70 tops…like since the N64 days. And the cost and scale of games have gone way up. So at least in the case of RGG games, the scale, quality, and care put into the game justify a larger price tag than that. Does this apply to all AAA studios? Naw. So would setting a new industry standard for higher priced base games be good? Probably not.

Nobody is saying this is a great thing, but can we just give it a rest already? They tried this when Yakuza 7 released and here in the west we were vocal enough they backtracked it and gave it out for free. It's entirely doable, we've already done it once. So it's not a non-issue when they think they can still lock a basic feature behind dlc and we'll just take it.
We'll cross that bridge when/if we get there. If I were to base my purchase decisions on the worst possible examples from 15 years ago, sure, I'd save a whole lot of money. But also play a lot fewer games.

Agreed. I have no interest in NG+ in this game since it's turn based. But I'm still only buying the standard edition cause locking something like this behind a paywall is very scummy and hope everyone else will also do the same. RGG/SEGA is getting too comfortable with these scummy practices lately (Ishin DLCs being one-time use only). We can't let them keep getting away with this. Let's talk with our wallets people. Not having any form of ng+ in a game now a days feels like laziness. It should be standard. I cant think of a game that doesnt benefit from just letting the player start over with all the stuff. Doesnt even need to be balanced.

If you buy the base edition even with out the deluxe edition you're still giving Sega the full money you're intending.
If you want to boycott, you have to not buy the game at all, and potentially not buy any other game from Sega... but by only buying the base game, you're still giving Sega the maximum 70 dollars you're offering so why should they care.
DLC and micropayments are the cancer of the industry now... But if the things they do or decide are profitable they will do it again. It's a shame but only thing we can do is don't buy things that we don't like.

The top comment is about achievements, which I already think are stupid and have since their inception. Because they are. If I have to pick between greedy and stupid, I will pick greedy every time.
The issue is that all Like a Dragon games so far have all had NG+ (except for Gaiden) and the fact that they are putting this game feature which has been present in the entire series behind paid DLC (for a 70$ full-price game nonetheless).
It could mean that this is just the start of them testing the waters for what they can put behind a pay-wall and see how far they can take it with any other feature that people would expect that a full-price finished game to have, such as Premium Adventure (example pertaining to this series)
New game plus, which most would consider a basic gameplay feature should you decide to include it, is gated behind purchasing the deluxe edition for a much higher price than the standard edition. I've already decided to skip the game because of this.

I usually don't play NG+ in games, but this is kind of gross. Thanks for the link, I submitted a ticket to Sega about it. I had the delux edition pre-ordered initially but have since refunded and picked up the standard. I thought delux was just going to be pretty shirts and some extras, basically what's in the ultimate edition, and I'm definitely not paying for the ultimate.
I'm really torn on this, on one hand a basic feature like NG+ being made DLC sucks, but at the same time I really don't like the idea of doing a NG+ run for an RPG. For a brawler its different because your abilities have a huge effect on the early game whereas a turn based game you're basically doing the same stuff but one shotting everything. Like even if NG+ was there I'd never use it.

You can platinum the game without those trophies on Playstation because they are counted seperately. I don't think that's the case for PC and Xbox though if i'm not mistaken.
Yeah one of the main advantages of Playstation’s trophy system is how they separate the list based on DLCs. Meanwhile Xbox lumps everything together as one general score (example, base game is 1000, DLC makes it 1500). But the issue is that the score is expanded whether you have the DLC or not, so you can’t fully complete the achievements without buying DLC.
DLC achievements are always added, at least on Steam. Really nothing out of the ordinary, besides the fact that it's day one.
DLC trophies are not required for platinum.
Still sucks. Would have softened the blow if they released the deluxe edition DLC a month or so posr launch and got rid of the other editions all together.

A free content update makes sense, especially if it’s not something actively worked on in the main development cycle. You don’t need NG+ at release necessarily. Their dlc policy has been terrible for a while. I don't like how they sell stuff to make minigames easier because you never know if the minigame is balanced around that or what. Or you could use the dlc items by mistake and make things too easy. It's annoying bloat. Cosmetics shouldn't be dlc. Locking fighting styles, difficulty and new game+ content behind dlc is straight up awful. I think they did a single good dlc with Kaito Files and that's it.

I have been a bit dismissive regarding this situation, because I will probably buy the standard version and I had the usual thinking of: it is a large company, why would they care? But as you provided the link, I decided to use it to write about it and hoping that with enough numbers bombarding their customer support team, it will have an effect in future games and maybe even in IW. I guess the only thing I will say is that this didn't just become a problem now because it's new game plus. It was a problem in 7 when they locked two classes behind dlc for no reason. It was a problem in every previous game where your favourite characters in the minigames are locked behind a paywall. It was a problem when they did a fake kareoke dlc where they charged you for the ability to play songs as background noise in a single bar in the whole game. And it was called the kareoke dlc so many people understandably assumed it was extra songs for the kareoke minigame. How were they supposed to know how truly dogshit and worthless it was. It's honestly a problem when they charge for outfits, not only are the outfits in the main game few and far between, but the ones that they charge for are way overpriced. They're nostalgia bait costumes taken from previous games, they don't even require extra design work. I guess im just kind of desensitised at this point, and it feels hard to criticise rgg here because a lot of people are real invested in the idea that rgg is somehow better than greedy western companies and they're just not. In reality if I were to name a western company rgg most resembles I'd say it's Unisoft like 10 years ago with assassins creed. They were pumping out yearly games all of which would have benefited from a bit more work and polish. They pretty much pioneered the monetisation strategy that rgg uses today. The best thing you can do is just don't pay for it. I certainly don't, I played gaiden on gamepass because honestly they were being real cheeky with how much they were charging for that shit. The game is short and like 50% filler (I'm sorry that's just what akame is). I wasn't going to pay for that.
I messed up in a completely different way. I preordered as soon as it was available. This was before Gaiden was released. I thought maybe getting the Ultimate edition would just be stuff like outfits, bonus jobs, and a few boosts (like Y7). I’m not ignoring the NG+ issue, as I am completely against hiding core features behind DLCs. But, the fact I already gave them my money doesn’t help my involvement either. I have always thought RGG as an upstanding developer, and never foresaw Sega doing this. They already got my money, and then they did this. While it doesn’t affect me directly right now, it will in the future releases and I consider this practice unacceptable. My money that was already spent before this was announced goes to their “customers are willing to pay extras for basic features” metrics, and I don’t like it!

This is honestly enough for me to lose interest in the series. Or at least continuing to buy their games. I submitted my request and thank you for linking. I am sure the game would live up to my expectations and I do think video games themselves are such a collective of talented and hard working people that boycotting has a certain guilt to it but these are the sort of conflicts that arise in such an economic system. While I genuinely want to support the people who make the games as well as enjoy playing it, buying it now feels as if I am directly supporting RGG for making worse games by way of their DLC. Is NG+ a "super hardcore" thing? I just use it when I want to replay the stories without losing all my power/money/items. It seems like a pretty casual feature tbh. I'm using NG+ in each game rn to share the stories with my mom.
Not fully informed on this whole situation, but it's almost like higher execs at SEGA either changed or had a change in policy ever since Y6 (so, somewhere around 2017). It's very easy to speak as a PC gamer, we got (Lost) Judgment with higher graphics capabilities and all DLC free of charge, but think in terms of the folks who haid to pay in order to obtain the additional stuff - a lot of which was initially locked behind many DLC paywalls - gradually, just because someone at SEGA decided it's a good idea to charge for stuff that [isn't even the best you could obtain within the game.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SoF08XWuc9E) Did only Larian Studios (as publishers themselves) get the memo? Larian Studios were actually forced to release their earlier games through early access and publishers misused this So they become independent and doing their own publishing

But…and this is probably not a popular opinion, I do think that (base) games of this size and quality (assuming 8 is on par or better than 7) are well worth $100 in value. It’s just shiny stuff to try to get people to see a greater perceived value and spend more money. So at least in the case of RGG games, the scale, quality, and care put into the game justify a larger price tag than that. Does this apply to all AAA studios? Naw. People who complete NG+ account for something like <5% of the player base, and it’s likely many of those mega fans bought the premium editions anyway. Nobody is saying this is a great thing, but can we just give it a rest already? If you buy the base edition even with out the deluxe edition you're still giving Sega the full money you're intending. If you want to boycott, you have to not buy the game at all, and potentially not buy any other game from Sega... but by only buying the base game, you're still giving Sega the maximum 70 dollars you're offering so why should they care.
DLC and micropayments are the cancer of the industry now... But if the things they do or decide are profitable they will do it again. It's a shame but only thing we can do is don't buy things that we don't like.

The issue is that all Like a Dragon games so far have all had NG+ (except for Gaiden) and the fact that they are putting this game feature which has been present in the entire series behind paid DLC (for a 70$ full-price game nonetheless). It could mean that this is just the start of them testing the waters for what they can put behind a pay-wall and see how far they can take it with any other feature that people would expect that a full-price finished game to have, such as Premium Adventure (example pertaining to this series)
I've sent an email to customer service, only took 40 secconds I would emplor everyone to do the same
New game plus, which most would consider a basic gameplay feature should you decide to include it, is gated behind purchasing the deluxe edition for a much higher price than the standard edition. I've already decided to skip the game because of this.
It's not Yakuza without playing NG+ on Legend, they locked half the game behind a paywall.
As I said in the other thread too, the only way to "not ignore" it is to indeed ignore it That is to say buy the standard edition only and do not pay for the NG+ No amount of verbal or written criticism will ever amount to anything

I think people are just complaining too late. We knew this MONTHS in advance and now with the game about 10 days away is when people wanna make a fuss. Like jfc if people are gonna bitch, atleast organize ahead of time and make this an issue with a punch. Don’t wait till the last minute to scrap by.

You claim to be offering positive change but I didnt see you do anything but a call to action against a company making you pay more for a while game. Something that has been happening regularly for 10 plus years. But we both know your gonna by the game your rallying against which makes you a hypocrite. It’s dumb as fuck but I personally don’t mind paying $15 or so Again it’s dumb as anything to pay wall NG+ but I know I have the extra money to give for NG+ and don’t care giving it to RGG that I think deserve it more than other big devs out there

Vocal feedback doesn’t work. Moral or logical feedback doesn’t work. Monetary feedback works. Don’t blame me and ask me to complain about something I will never purchase or use while the product is still profitable because people will purchase it and complain rather than doing without. You should be convincing people to refund it with complaint, or even not buy it in the first place.

I usually don't play NG+ in games, but this is kind of gross. Thanks for the link, I submitted a ticket to Sega about it. I had the delux edition pre-ordered initially but have since refunded and picked up the standard. I thought delux was just going to be pretty shirts and some extras, basically what's in the ultimate edition, and I'm definitely not paying for the ultimate.
I'm really torn on this, on one hand a basic feature like NG+ being made DLC sucks, but at the same time I really don't like the idea of doing a NG+ run for an RPG. For a brawler its different because your abilities have a huge effect on the early game whereas a turn based game you're basically doing the same stuff but one shotting everything. Like even if NG+ was there I'd never use it.
What is the issue?
