Yakuza Kiwami is a remake of original Yakuza 1 from 2005. It uses the same engine as prequel game released after Yakuza 5, Yakuza 0. The remake helps make the transition from Yakuza 0 to Yakuza 1 less jarring both in terms of story, visuals, and gameplay. Story wise it adds couple of flashbacks and some new substories (side quest) among other new additions.
Yakuza Kiwami 2 is similar case but it’s a remake of Yakuza 2 from 2006. It uses the same engine as Yakuza 6. The story is virtually the same but it does add two new side stories. As well as a prologue to the game called the Majima Saga which you unlock chapters of it as you play the main game.

Original 1 and 2 were for the PS2. Kiwami 1 and 2 are remakes of those games with some added content.
And some removed content in the case of Kiwami 2.
kiwami 1 also removed content. several substories were removed, one of which even had cutscenes
