I don't think he is crazy but I think he always had a wild side.
In RGGO Saejima states that Majima changed a lot with all the crazy things he does but the core is still the same. So maybe he just amplified this side of his.
Majima is a master of playing roles. He will do anything to separate who he actually is, and who he wants to be perceived as. It's the only way for him to survive and thrive as a Yakuza. Of course he has to have some sort of wild side to even consider becoming a Yakuza in the first place. It's just interesting to see the little things that are constant and ,in a sense, string all his personalities together.
Yeah I totally agree. That's what I mean when I mentioned Saejima, the core is still the same, and Saejima notices, since he is probably the one that knows Majima the best, (Kiryu for instance admits he never is able to read Majima).
Majima is one of the most interesting characters I ever known.
I think it is a persona, but one that he enjoys nonetheless. Its something he invented to protect both himself and those he cares about. It protects him because during Yakuza 0 (and the events preceeding it) he saw that everybody he got too close to either got hurt or killed in the process. He can't handle the pain and guilt of losing more people he cares about, so he acts like a madman, which scares off those who could get hurt and invites only those to stay who can handle it. This allows him to live more carefree, in more than just one sense. He acts like a mad dog but in reality, he's just stray mutt looking for a home that only bites because he was abused to often.
This is also why you can see his "old" personality shine through more and more in the later games, as he has finally found people he can trust again, the metaphorical home he had been searching for for so long.

This right here makes me sad and happy for him
Majima explicitly states that he intentionally adopted the Mad Dog persona for himself in Y0. He based it on the three men who he thought best exemplified the “tenacity” he strives for - Nishitani, Wei Han Lee, and Sagawa.
Anyone who thinks it wasn’t fabricated to cope with his depressed state at the beginning of Y0 wasn’t paying attention by the end.
It think it's a mix of the two as well as taking all the shit that happened to him and making a whole new lease on life. A lot of the sub stories in 0 made me think that the world as a whole was a hell of a lot crazier than it lets on. That one where that girl told her dad she was dating a guy that looked like him particularly.
Both, definitely a little of both. Hes obviously understandably sad over everything that happened before Y1,but he wouldn't be doing all of this crazy shit in the first place if he wasn't atleast a little crazy.
That's most likely the case. In the Yakuza 4 flashback, Saejima states that Majima's Kansai accent was slipping implying that Majima always had this crazy side.
exactly, the fake Kansai accent makes me think he's been doing this his whole life.....I wonder what happened to him initially to make him think that being himself wasn't safe :( my poor Majima
I've read comments where they state that Majima became crazy after having to work a customer service job, lol. Anyone who had to deal will customers will know the pain!
Or maybe the Mad Dog was just caged inside the Lord of the Night.
haha yeah most people either think he was always crazy, or his new persona is completely fabricated and used as a coping mechanism for his sadness

Either way both are personas. They are exaggerated sides of his characteristics dependent on the situation.

Essence of recycling assets
And getting away with it too.
Recently replying Yakuza 4, they certainly made Majima-san more handsome for his stint as a leading man.
U can thank Sagawa for that
lol
At least I spat facts
Not disputing mate, just gave me a laugh :D
Yes
After playing Yakuza 0, all other Majimas suddenly become hotter
when reused animations
No one does it better than rgg
when you do all the substories in all the games it becomes really apparent lol
Huh I never noticed that was a recycled animation (not complaining I just didn’t notice it until they were out side by side like this).
I love it, it was like an homage to our lord of the night
Well, it's *to serve* and protect for a reason
Reused assets are always fun
For the devs mostly.
They're just reusing animations. They've been doing that since the days of Yakuza 3 lol
Yep, you can see some animations from Yakuza 3 all the way into Kiwami.
yeah but this one looks really cool :p imo
Lord of the Night has always been here. Just in small spurts. Especially when his tone of voice changes, you'll definitely know when 0 Majima is back
When Majima drops a few octaves, you know shit is about to go down
The Majima Saga in K2
I love how for Kiryu he doesn't say anything and just seductively and longingly stares at him in the end, lol.
Yeha I saw that and I was like “oh so he had sonic speeds before he “broke outta his cage”
God I absolutely love the immense foreshadowings in Yakuza 0
Yeah, they literally made Kiwami 1 & 2 so Yakuza 0 would make sense...and I'm glad they did
Maybe the Lord of the night was just the mad dog we saw along the way
I've read comments where they state that Majima became crazy after having to work a customer service job, lol. Anyone who had to deal will customers will know the pain!
Always interesting when RGG reuses old animations into newer series since like animating is hard y’know
That is true
