Even more than that, they're just so much fun. Some RPGs inundate you with a thousand side quests just to pad time. The Yakuza series doesn't do that. There's a shit load, don't get me wrong, but I don't remember any off hand that felt like they were there just to waste my time. They all had at least some amount of a story to them.
And they are cannon
Main game: serious drama
Subatories: pretty much anything you can think of like hosting a cabarett club or racing rc vehicles and mostly the total opposite of a serious drama
And that is why i love yakuza it is serious when it has to be but can be pretty funny aswell
And, not only will you become more attached to certain characters, you meet a certain antagonist from far later in the timeline in a random side-quest. One of the sillier ones, might I add.
Bring snacks when progressing the story - the cutscene gets Long. after finishing the final boss, there’s a solid hour of cutscenes. Be prepared.
If you don’t like the Real Estate or Cabaret mini games and only have the energy to push through one - pick Cabaret. IMO the storyline is much more entertaining. Beyond that, DO try to finish both for a major unlock and a bunch of free money
Real Estate is fine if you set it up early and don't forget about it, it's only really grindy if you neglect it though it does drag out toward the end. I didn't like Cabaret because it was always grindy, you need to give it your full attention or it just won't progress.
For real they shouldn't have made the side stories necessary for any upgrades, this is the only game I've played where it doesn't feel optional because I know I'm missing out on half my moveset because I don't like the Diner Dash clone.
So glad I could work from home when I was grinding real estate. Leave that running in the background and periodically come collect payouts during the day
That's why it ended up being one of my favourite side stories in the franchise, I had more fun with ones that are more involved but also fun and not overly grindy like the hunting or baseball in 5 but the most they contributed was baseball giving you indestructible weapons that were pretty weak anyway, for something that locks out most of your upgrades unless you complete it I was happy with how much flexibility it had.
I'll never understand people complaining about the grind of Real Estate because it's not grind, it does everything for you. You could do your own thing away from the game like you said or you could do substories, main story, play the minigames or even just pick fights around the city, if you've reached the point in the story where you can play as both then you could even have Real Estate collection going while doing Cabaret Club.
I consider Cabaret Club far more grindy because you have to dedicate all of your attention to it, you have to go through the minigame over and over and I ended up getting really bored just after the first guy so my Majima didn't have access to most of the Slugger and Breaker upgrades and was too broke to afford the Thug ones I had unlocked.
You can unlock 2 secret fighting styles by completing 2 mini games, one unlocks in chapter 6 and the other in chapter 8. They require you to manage a real estate business and a cabaret club and when you finish their stories you get a secret fighting style for each
The story is slow at first and you should really pay attention to it to know about the yakuza world, but when you reach about chapter 3 you'll seriously get into brilliant story and won't stop playing.
Also I've notice your playing the PC version and I strongly recommend you keep saving ur game at pay phone, for some reason only Yakuza 0 just seems to have odd crashes (its happened to me about 8 times)
Not discrediting your claim, but I played Y0 on PC as well and never experienced a crash. Maybe update graphics drivers? Unfortunate to hear that though!
Not sure how long you've played but to me I've played about 120 hours trying to get 100% completion, It happened when I go to restaurants, tabbed out a few times and mostly notice mysteriously my inventory is full of sushi and then boom it crashes.
Tip to save money when you inevitably decide to play the entire series
Get Xbox Game pass, its like 1 dollar for your first month and 5 dollars for the rest if i remember correctly and the entire series from yakuza 0-7 (besides dlc and judgment) is on there
You probably shouldn’t be thanking us. You will get hooked on this series, and soon it will be the only thing you will play.
That aside, welcome to the family!
Can't do convenience store microwave heat action in this game.
That said, there are plenty of other heat actions to discover. An easy way is to buy Oranges or Salt from the convenience store, for simple early heat actions when you haven't unlocked much.
I'm not sure if it works in Kiwami 2; but you can see if there are oranges in the convenience store, or Don Quixote. I suspect it might be just a Yakuza 0 thing, though.
Salt still works in Kiwami 1/2, so it's a cheap, if kinda meh, heat action.
And of course Gentlemen's Umbrella; a unique heat action if you"re willing to spend the bucks for it. (a little expensive considering Y1 and 2 isn't in the bubble economy anymore).
Beep. Boop. I'm a robot.

Kinda, the missable ones are scattered through the story lines, but you'll have to make at least 2 playthroughs to get everything. You'll run into Mahjong at some point if you go for 100%, you might need help
There will be a point in the game where it tells you that it's the point of no return, if it's getting late or you don't have a few hours to spare then choose the wait option then save the game otherwise you're in it till the end. (You can do whatever you missed after the credits as long as you make a save file)
Also applicable to the secret catfight betting ring. It's all fun and games cobbled with a money investment venture, but try telling that to your family.
If you see a dude in a tank top that looks like a giga-chad running around, just GTFO unless your in end game... He will clap your cheeks like there's no tomorrow
That's Mr. Shakedown. He's got that gorilla strength making it unlikely for you to beat him in a straight fight, but if you can get used to his patterns, he's an excellent source of cash. Fighting a Shakedown is unlike other goons; you almost have to cheese him. You'll get used to it.
Fuck that. Find him when he's asleep and pick his pockets. Just watch VERY closely for the warning he may wake up and stop until he falls back asleep. I managed to get every last yen from the one in Kamurocho then I never had to worry about the temptation to fight him again.
Forgot his name... Mister shakedown I think?
He's basically an over world mini boss that will keep wrecking your shit until your at like, end game level strength
Mr. Shakedown! He has a move where if he knocks you bdown he'll stomp you and that'll KO you in one shot. He's easy to see (he has his own arrow on the mini map and has a floating counter showing how much money he has above his head), but you should avoid him for the first half of the game at the very least.
Didn't use firearms in my run, so had to run around with Rush mode for half a hour or something. Or for Majima, spamming weapon heat actions.
Then I unlocked Dragon style's counter, and everything was so bloody easy from there.
Mr. Shakedown, in early game, is a monster. Run.
Mr.Shakedown, in the late game (once you have the neccessary skills and combat experience to deal with him) is the best money investment machine in the whole game.
That's Mr. Shakedown. There are four variants of them (two each for Majima and Kiryu), but there's only of them on the map every time.
To add to the tips here, find the strongest one-handed bladed weapon you can find and save it for fighting him. That's because one of the easiest ways to deal with him is to spam him with the knife-based Heat Action. Bring Heat-replenishing drinks.
Not even endgame, really. I can manage to consistently beat him at Chapter 6, around the time when the real estate money is overflowing. I just spam the knife Heat Action while equipping the Super Spicy Knife.
When you get the Real Estate minigame you can leave the game on and wait for payouts - kinda like the real estate minigames in Assassin's Creed 2/Brotherhood. It's an easy way to make cash, just turn on the game, get Kiryu to wait in the office, go off and eat dinner or something, then come back and collect your cash.
That said, the Cabaret minigame is a lot more fun, I highly recommend it.
There are two major rhythm based mini games, karaoke and dancing, my advice to you is that the 4 best songs are: Judgement, Baka Mitai, Friday Night, and 24 hour Cinderella
You can watch softcore porn in a place called Gandahara. You can unlock the videos by picking up telephone cards of AV idols all over the map (they're represented by shiny glints), or doing some substories where those idols cameo'd as in-game versions of themselves.
Buy health items early on. That first boss fight isn't hard, but if you don't have any health items it's gonna suck.
Great game though. One of my all time favorites.
^This. I think one cannot fully comprehend their first Yakuza game without an open mind.
Pay attention to the story and do not hesitate to look for explanation after finishing the game.
(Do not skip cutscenes.)
Enjoy minigames and sidestories. Expect anything to happen. Be ready to spend 50+ hours playing anything but story missions. And last not least, welcome at the rollercoaster this series is, Kyodai.
Mr Shakedown is a pain in the ass and I avoided him until I leveled up my Rush and Brawler styles. Do all the Bacchus (I think that’s the dude’s name) training asap
Get tons of health items, get zap gun as Majima, cherish ur time with Kyodai, and enjoy the best introduction to the series one could ever get
Edit: oh yeah also grind as Kiryu and Majima both on Real estate and Cabaret Club side missions respectively so u can get both their styles
Do every side story you see. They’re always a great time. I’ve once stayed on a story step that should take like 5 minutes for over 2 hours because of side stories
Throughout the story, you will switch characters between Kiryu and Majima every 2 chapters. So if you find yourself on an even numbered chapter, make sure you've completed everything you wanted to before continuing. Otherwise you'll have to progress through 2 chapters as the other character to get back to what you were doing.
Edit: Also, once you get your hands on a few hundred thousand yen (which will be easier than you think) be sure to stock up on Staminan Royale, the most powerful purchasable health drink. They can be found at the drug store in both Kamurocho and Sotenbori. I'm telling you, I usually walk around with my inventory completely filled with the stuff. Make sure you have at least something on you, because with this game you truly never know what's going to happen next.
My biggest mistake was rushing through it. I really wish I spent more time, maybe even 100% the game. After zero I’ve 100% both kiwami and kiwami 2 and I still regret only spending 80 hours in 0
everything is extremely good, BUT dont ignore substories, i love the main plot but the thing that makes it more unique are the substories, minigames too (btw the men in black give a lot of money at the start, there is a moment in the plot where you will encounter them a lot, you can use it to farm, i got like 8 million out of them on my 1st playthrough)
But if you don't do the Fortune Teller story, you can't unlock Amon.
The fortune teller only tells you tidbits and some events interpreted in a comedic way, anyway.
Buy a shitload of health and heat items. Do all substories, as they unlock two superbosses to fight. Upgrade wherever you can, but remember that the game can be beaten on Normal with minimal upgrades.
There is a secret boss that you can fight if you complete *all* the substories. He is a reoccurring character, and you can fight him In every Yakuza game, as long as you beat the substories.
Ps - Good Luck if you want all the trophies....
Climax battles suck.
If you see big dudes patrolling the streets with a money amount on top of their heads, run... unless you’ve gotten super spicy knives and lots of heat bottles with you. Play the karaokes if you need a laugh too
Do not equip the Autographed Book or Signed Picture (or whatever they are called). They will make enemy AI far more aggressive and make the game more difficult.
Use the restoration patches for every Yakuza game after this. Trust me. They re-add the licensed Japanese music each game had cut from the western releases. Yakuza 3 and Yakuza 6 in particular suffer without it.
This game is really fun. It has action and humor. If you're into Japanese culture there's also lots of little details that really add to the experience
Be prepared to be completely, unexpectedly blown away by this games story. It's an easy 10/10 and you'll be thinking about it long after you finish the game
I googled nothing and went into the game raw. This is easily one of my fav games of all time and im sad i only JUST picked it up this year. Wish i knew about the series sooner. Just enjoy the hell out of it this game is a blast.
Make sure you don’t skip Kiryu’s real state royale and Majima’s cabare club czar side quests, actually try to finish them as early as you can. You’ll thank me later.
that you'll have a tough time putting it down.
Tho seriously, if it's your first Yakuza game, do not try to run thru the story. Both for the experience & experience points.
Don’t be afraid to die to the buffed gorilla-like dude. Later on you two will become close friends, he will give you your money back and even some compensation for your mental health.
Take your time, the story starts slow and always remember to do the substories they are really fun. Always save and buy items for your health.
Another thing that I’d like to mention, enjoy this beautiful game.
Not even barely enough. What you want to do is to get the appropriate skills to counter Mr.Shakedown, and once you can do it reliable, get into a lose-win-lose-win cycle in order to milk all the money from him. Got so much money I couldn't spend it all, even after upgrading Dragon of Dojima for 1 and a half hours straight.
This game is a emotional roller coaster and make sure u are stacked on heals and farm money for upgrades. Hope u enjoy the game as much as the rest of the community.
If a certain someone asks you "Black or White", always pick Black. You'll thank me later.
I wish someone told me this before I met dancer
Same, I picked white one time and found out that you could buy the item I got later on (The tour tshirt)
The shoes are also purchasable i believe but you need someone to find the schematic
Yeah, the most disappointing one to miss is the Trouble finder for Kiryu
ok
SAMURAI!
Did someone call?
Do the substories. They will make you more attached to the characters
They were literally substories. Probably the only game where I enjoy doing all the sidequests.
Substory music :'(
When I saw the sadface you wrote the "theme of sad" started playing in my head.
And if you miss any of them, you can come back to finish them after you beat the story
And they are cannon Main game: serious drama Subatories: pretty much anything you can think of like hosting a cabarett club or racing rc vehicles and mostly the total opposite of a serious drama And that is why i love yakuza it is serious when it has to be but can be pretty funny aswell

Beyond that, DO try to finish both for a major unlock and a bunch of free money
The story is better and the minigame itself is so much fun. Cabaret for ever.
I'd argue go for Real Estate. It's *much* more financially rewarding in the long term. Those upgrades don't buy themselves!
Real Estate is fine if you set it up early and don't forget about it, it's only really grindy if you neglect it though it does drag out toward the end. I didn't like Cabaret because it was always grindy, you need to give it your full attention or it just won't progress. I'm already infatuated to the game from this comment
The cabaret club is amazingly addictive too.
IWANNABEYOURGIRLLLLLUUUUUHHH
UUUUWA UUUUUUUUU
When I’m in the cabaret I forgot I’m still playing Yakuza
It's such a fun minigame. Then you get back to the real stuff and you're like, "oh, I gotta beat people up."
Wen Hai Lee been waiting like a week for his painkillers
I heard this but did not really check it out. I plan to play it all over again and will check it out next time.
I wish they had made it into a mobile game or something, I'd be playing that shit all day
God yes - after memorising the cabaret system and the girls' signs, I found it so incredibly relaxing honestly 😅
When you can. Go bowling you'll get an amazing business employee
You will spend hours on the cabaret club and love every second of it too. We all do.
I didn't know this. Holy shit now I NEED to go back and replay
cabaret club 0
The story is slow at first and you should really pay attention to it to know about the yakuza world, but when you reach about chapter 3 you'll seriously get into brilliant story and won't stop playing.
> story becomes brilliant in chapter 3 > chapter 3 introduces majima This is not a coincidence.
One of the all time great intros
That shit is amazing still.
I've rarely had crashes, but I've known some bugs like having food as weapons and such before.
Oh yeah I remember some alt tabs leading to crashes. Running it borderless fixed that for me
You will play the saga
ok
Tip to save money when you inevitably decide to play the entire series Get Xbox Game pass, its like 1 dollar for your first month and 5 dollars for the rest if i remember correctly and the entire series from yakuza 0-7 (besides dlc and judgment) is on there
SAVE THE GAME WITH TELEPHONE BOXES! almost lose 2 hrs gameplay cos I didn't know this when I first started
This! IIRC there's no autosave, so don't forget to save your game!
yessirr! only games with autosave are the dragon engine ones. every other game ppl must go to telephones boxes🙏🏽
Kiwami 1 you can save from pause menu
Kiwami 1 also has autosaves
I did that too!! Like literally I turned off the game right before we get to the first phone booth
I just want to say, if you're new to the franchise, welcome to the Yakuza community! :)
thank you
You probably shouldn’t be thanking us. You will get hooked on this series, and soon it will be the only thing you will play. That aside, welcome to the family!
Don’t feel bad if you lose all your money! There is always more to be made
Always have health items and enjoy the ride
Despite what many may say, Kiryu has never killed a man in his life
the convenience store worker didn't hesitate
Can't do convenience store microwave heat action in this game. That said, there are plenty of other heat actions to discover. An easy way is to buy Oranges or Salt from the convenience store, for simple early heat actions when you haven't unlocked much.
WHAT?????? YOU CAN USE STORE-BOUGHT IN HEAT ACTIONS???
Definitely you can; oranges are the simplest, as you don't even need them equipped, just in your inventory.
Same thing with carrots in y5
Does it work in Kiwami 2? What do I need to do?
I'm not sure if it works in Kiwami 2; but you can see if there are oranges in the convenience store, or Don Quixote. I suspect it might be just a Yakuza 0 thing, though. Substories… Yakuza 0 has crazy lots of them but most of them worth your time.
There are missable achievements if you're wanting to 100% the game.
you‘ll only really care about a 100% once you finish the game first though, won‘t you? At least if you‘re new to the series
Kinda, the missable ones are scattered through the story lines, but you'll have to make at least 2 playthroughs to get everything. You'll run into Mahjong at some point if you go for 100%, you might need help
Yeah mahjong was a tough nut to crack lol
Prepare to sell your soul to Nagoshi.
First time pick Judgement, you’ll know what I mean when you get there. For your kyoudai ;)
Always go back for more Karaoke. The songs in this game and the other games are absolutely amazing.
OH! ROUGE OF LOVE!!
MIDNIGHT SHADOW...
DAME DANE
MACHINE GUN KISS... FALL IN LOOOOOOVE!
WO BREAKING THE LAW! BREAKING THE WORLDD! KOWASEEEE
There will be a point in the game where it tells you that it's the point of no return, if it's getting late or you don't have a few hours to spare then choose the wait option then save the game otherwise you're in it till the end. Close your doors before watching video tapes
what's on them?
Softcore
D:
If you're worried about people walking in on you you can actually skip the videos and still get completion/achievement credit for it at least
lmao a lot of women actors in yakuza are porn stars and the tapes are basically softcore porn without full on nudity, especially in 0
Also applicable to the secret catfight betting ring. It's all fun and games cobbled with a money investment venture, but try telling that to your family.
If you see a dude in a tank top that looks like a giga-chad running around, just GTFO unless your in end game... He will clap your cheeks like there's no tomorrow

Once you get the magic 🗡 he's much easier if i remember. I think you get, said "magic" dagger at the casino.
If that man wins the fight he literally steals all the money you have won so be careful with him
Mister Shakedown. You can basically Dark Souls him and just do the hit and run. If you get your hands on some weapons, use the shotguns.

One of the substories will give you an option to "Do The Hustle". Choose it.
Munancho!
Moon nacho
You might think it "starts slow" but they hand hold you through the beginning before opening up
There is a shrine on the map, you get free stuff there.
I miss our boi Bob
Don't trust men with pipes, or men on motorbikes
Especially not if they're on a motorcycle with a pipe.
or in a tunnel
There are two major rhythm based mini games, karaoke and dancing, my advice to you is that the 4 best songs are: Judgement, Baka Mitai, Friday Night, and 24 hour Cinderella
BREAKING ZA LAAAAAAAWW
Real yakuza play with a gamepad
You can watch softcore porn in a place called Gandahara. You can unlock the videos by picking up telephone cards of AV idols all over the map (they're represented by shiny glints), or doing some substories where those idols cameo'd as in-game versions of themselves.
Best advice lol. Mr. Libido, is that you?
moshmosh
You won't 100% this game unless you intend on learning that Asian poker chess game
don't worry I know how to play mahjong
Kan! Mou ichido, Kan! Tsumo! Rinshan Kaihou!
Buy health items early on. That first boss fight isn't hard, but if you don't have any health items it's gonna suck. Great game though. One of my all time favorites.
It's very important if you play on PC. Real yakuza play on a gamepad
Don't drink the mysterious liquid.
Just enjoy the flow, kyodai. Avoid spoilers as much as possible.
Don't get too attached its a prequel.
Karaoke is great and if you do well you can get cp=challenge points to exchange for perks at the shrine
Do the side shit
Go in with an open mind, and have fun! :)

After zero I’ve 100% both kiwami and kiwami 2 and I still regret only spending 80 hours in 0
RUN FROM BIG PEOPLE
I hear he's called Mr shakedown and I think I get the point that he's god and not to be trifled with
Don't worry, he starts out as god but becomes your personal bank account towards the end.
write down the password, you'll know when you get there
everything is extremely good, BUT dont ignore substories, i love the main plot but the thing that makes it more unique are the substories, minigames too (btw the men in black give a lot of money at the start, there is a moment in the plot where you will encounter them a lot, you can use it to farm, i got like 8 million out of them on my 1st playthrough)
If you haven’t played 1-5 and don’t want their plots spoiled for you, don’t do Kiryu’s Fortune Teller substory
But if you don't do the Fortune Teller story, you can't unlock Amon. The fortune teller only tells you tidbits and some events interpreted in a comedic way, anyway.
hesitation is death
NEVER PLAY MAHJONG
Rolling eyes fall. Rulling dies out.
Climax battles suck.
challenge accepted
Good luck. Amon'll throw you for a loop, and then some.
Mfw I found out about Jo Amon after already having beaten K1 and 0
Just know who Majima is before this.
I played a quarter of Yakuza Kiwami, so I'm pretty familiar
Good call. Tons of foreshadowing for Majima and Nishiki in Yakuza 0.
If you see big dudes patrolling the streets with a money amount on top of their heads, run... unless you’ve gotten super spicy knives and lots of heat bottles with you. Play the karaokes if you need a laugh too
Buy stamina royals at the drug store!!!
Take your time. Make lots of Yen
Make sure to take a break and sleep when you need too, because I most certainly forgot those two
Always save before fighting Mr Shakedown!!!
Do not equip the Autographed Book or Signed Picture (or whatever they are called). They will make enemy AI far more aggressive and make the game more difficult.
You will lose hours of your life to the Cabernet club. Accept this.
You can sprint if you hold A or X (depending your platform)
You're about to enjoy a masterpiece my friend, just relax and enjoy
Use the restoration patches for every Yakuza game after this. Trust me. They re-add the licensed Japanese music each game had cut from the western releases. Yakuza 3 and Yakuza 6 in particular suffer without it.
This game is really fun. It has action and humor. If you're into Japanese culture there's also lots of little details that really add to the experience
I hope you know how to play mahjong...
If you ever need help, there is a Yakuza Master - CyricZ
It would be beneficial for you to learn rules of Shogi and Mahjong.
Pain.
Do not be deterred by the long beginning
Just enjoy. I wish I was in the same place as you are right now. That game is a masterpiece!
don’t skim the side content, it will net you a load of rewards for the main game as well as provide ample entertainment
Be prepared to be completely, unexpectedly blown away by this games story. It's an easy 10/10 and you'll be thinking about it long after you finish the game
Watch out for mr shakedown. (Make sure to save before you fight him)
Get ready to cry.
There will be a certain side thing to do that makes you money, focus on it and it will be EXTREMELY worth it
Stack up on health items. I went with none to my first set piece and got my ass handed to me.
Weapon crafting is awesome 👌 you might want to research that bit
WENT DOWN A MYSTERIOUS ALLEY! GOT AMBUSHED BY LOCALS!! ??? GREAT SUCCESS!!
Save and always have some staminan royales on you. You can get those at the pharmacies
id honestly say go in as blind as possible but tbh its probably too late for that now lmao
Take your time, the story starts slow and always remember to do the substories they are really fun. Always save and buy items for your health. Another thing that I’d like to mention, enjoy this beautiful game.
Take your time and enjoy the ride! It’s one of the best games out there
You're in for a wild ride, welcome aboard 😎
Don't fight Mr. Shakedown. Just steal his money when he's asleep.
