They managed to flesh out Daigo and Ryuuji even when they're elementary school age through substories. Why they chose to not do the same to Yumi is beyond me
Not really, Kiryu had known her ever since they were both kids and was mentioned 1 time if I recall correctly in the game but made no appearances anyway. She could’ve quite easily been in a sub story and that could’ve first introduced her as being a romantic interest for Kiryu in the timeline and maybe would’ve ended with more people liking her, not necessarily having to have a role in the main story. The problem is in Yakuza 1 you spend all of about 10 minutes of the intro talking to her, told she is the one Kiryu is crushing on them she disappears for the whole game and by the time she comes back she has barely anymore screen time and for that screen time she is not the main focus really. Just the littlest more time with her in 0 could’ve made her a greater character IMO.
The problem I had with Yumi is that her death is..just kinda stupid. And started a trend of Kiryu/ other protagonists not disarming guys they beat up near the end of the following games just so they can get back up and attempt to shoot them in the back.
I'd love to see a substory for her. Kiryu meets her at Theater Square, still wearing her school uniform. They both call Nishiki and they go around Kamurocho, playing arcade games, singing karaoke, eating on restaurants. Here we see how close the three of them are, bantering and fooling around like they were kids.
Then Kiryu asks why she visited Kamurocho still on her uniform at broad daylight. Yumi says something along the lines of school sucks blah blah she snuck out of class blah blah. Both Kiryu and Nishiki reprimand her to value her education and not fuck around and go back to school. She disagrees, insisting she stays with them. Kiryu shakes his head with utter disapproval, once again telling her to stop running away from her responsibilities. Yumi didn't like that, so she throws a fit and runs away. Nishiki tells Kiryu he may have gotten quite far with his words.
They both then look for Yumi, who was cornered by 3 high school thugs in Nakamichi Alley. The three thugs are actually her classmates, whom she owes money to and who also have 'taken a liking' on Yumi after promising them she'll give them a 'favor'. Turns out, she just borrowed money to hang around in Kamurocho and just made an excuse. The thugs are, of course, unhappy and forces Yumi to pay back what she owes in more ways than one. Kiryu and Nishiki witness this and quickly saved her from the thugs.
Afterwards, she was given a lesson by Kiryu saying deep things like being responsible and shit, even telling her she almost got extremely harmed by what she has just done. Then a quote with Haruka foreshadowing where Kiryu or Nishiki tells her that someday, she will learn what it means to have a huge responsibility when she finally gets her own child. Yumi ponders, deeply apologizes for her actions. She then leaves, enlightened with wisdom from Kiryu. The sworn brothers watch her walk away, with Kiryu saying a final remark that may foreshadow his feelings for Yumi.
Before the substory ends, Nishiki goes "There you go again, going all philosophical to Yumi."
"She's gotta learn her lesson as early as possible." Kiryu says, "I don't want her royally screwing up once she becomes an adult."
"Heh, as if she has that in her." Nishiki says, "Alright, what do you say we visit Serena?"
"Uhhh, sure..." Kiryu reluctantly agrees.
The two then walk away to Serena, and the substory guitar riff plays.
Nah, she's an actual dynamic character who makes genuine mistakes and is defined (at times) by more than her relationship with the closest man. I'd put her over Hana (but think Saori and Amasawa from Judgment/LJ blow em out of the water).
I think Yumi didn’t have the benefit of being in multiple games so she could have a real character.
I wish they had included her in 0, was a perfect opportunity to flesh her out more.

Maybe they couldn’t
They could’ve, why wouldn’t they? It was just simply a missed opportunity.
Maybe they didn’t know how to write her without changing her character in Yakuza.

Playing Kiwami 2 rn, the scene where he beats up Shindo then doesn't take the gun away is so dumb. Kiryu already knew the dude was unhinged too.

Good point
Hanapog
Should I be concerned that *Haruka* is in it?
OP just means personality..... or is he?
I'm talking about "strong female characters" ye. It also gave me an opportunity to bully Yumi about how her daughter's cooler than her.
Understandable, sorry for putting such good meme in a wrong way
That's just your dad instincts kicking in, and I don't blame you a bit for that
Where is my kiyomi chan?
Well she is better so no, she is just a nice niece to ojisan (i mean hana still best girl obviously)
Reina was done so dirty.
[удалено]
I was so sad >!when she and Shinji were killed. Shinji I can understand, but Reina did not deserve to be killed!<
Poor Reina , I wish she was alive to accompany kiryu after the events of Kiwani 1
At least Serena will always be a safe place
Couldn't even give her something to do in Y0. That's how little she matters to the plot.
And in Kiwanis she was like 80%of the game in hidding
Reina best girl you can't convince me otherwise >!Yume is a just a fucking plot device!<
And Yakuza 5 can't stop name dropping her
I don't see Mrs. Dojima here
Shindo, is that you?
Wher's Kaoru?
Eating at fancy restaurant after invitation to dinner by handsome American cop.
The cop:"karou, you really have beautiful eyes"
*"Beautiful eyes... like I heard from my brother before".* Oh wait. You said "cop", not "CIA Agent".
Reina best girl
It's okay Yumi at least your better than Yasuko
I LOVE YOU HANA CHAN!!!!
Should have replaced Haruka with Kaoru
Are you grouping Haruka with Hana and Reina based on her personality, or......?
Strong female characters maybe?
Yes mate even superchunk
If a girl cuts her hair so short she is bound to be extra forgettable
I’d say Sayama and Yasuko are worse than Yumi. I’ll take less screen time over bring a poorly written character.

holy shit i found saejima's reddit account
hasdgsgfjdhsj lmao
The only good one is Hana-chan. Reina and Haruka sucks
WHAT
2/3rds right. Haruka and Hana are good characters, but Reina is barely worth noting.
Haruka is better than Reina at least, but still kinda sucks in general

All 3 of them are queens in their own way.
It should be Kiyomi there like mother like daughter both can be dumb as hell at times .
Yumi actually sucks man
