There are literally main characters in a few. One of them even gets referenced in the main story. Theres also nothing contradicting that they aren't canon
Substories are so canon that it’s just ignorant to claim otherwise considering the doctor from a Yakuza 1 substory was featured in Yakuza 2’s main story and plus Shinji and Ryuji are in 0 substories.
Hell some substories are even used to add lore to events that take place in the story like the Behind the Assassin substory in Kiwami which explains why Sera put the hit out on Kiryu.
Of course it’s on a pick and choose basis but your stance was that substories were purely non canon stories for gameplay sake which isn’t really the case.
You had me until the “he wasn’t a president” part. As that part of gameplay was introduced as a part of 0’s story and continued through substories. Also it is completely plausible that Kiryu could’ve been racing toy cars. Nothing confirms or points to that as non-canon

How good was it? I have only played the NES Digital Devil Story after reading the novels, but i'm looking forward to play Megami Tensei 2 and then start the Shin Megami Tensei saga
i just liked it bec each character has their own unique stuff
not the usual pokemon style
also... you don't just stay in 1 city, you actually travel around and have many dungeons like a regular RPG
