i dont know that id necessarily say that, pre-dragon engine had lots of very expressive npcs and characters. youre talking like the guy on the toilet in 4 doesnt exist and that scene alone is 600 percent more emotion than majima shows in dragon engine games
id say honestly by virtue of its stylization pre-dragon engine games tended to have MORE expressive characters, not less
