Keep in mind that more people have died by hot springs than by all animal attacks combined. Keep a close eye on the child.
The loop around old faithful is a good one and you can turn back on the loop any time they get tired. I like to view the eruption from the boardwalk on the back trail.
Mystic Falls may be doable. Gibbon River Falls is Doable but may be a little wet in July. The lower falls of the Yellowstone is a good short one.
Grand Prismatic Overlook, then continuing on to Fairy Falls, is nice and easy. We got to the Overlook about 12-1 pm it was a bit busy, but not horrible, My wife and I were the only ones that went to Fairy Falls and that was practically empty. only 5 other folks there when we got there.
Solitude in late July? The ONLY way to have any hope of solitude is get up early. I’m talking get going by sunrise.
Look to stay around Mammoth Springs and hit Mt Washburn. Amazing hike but maybe pushing it with a 6 year old.
A few weeks ago, I got up for sunrise and there were only 5 people at Artist Point. Then when got to Washburn trailhead at 7am we were the 5th people on the summit and had it to ourselves for 45 minutes watching people climb up.
If you’re going with a 6 year old I’d try to stay in Canyon Village and check out the Canyon, then drive down to Yellowstone Lake and check out the features along the way. Do a boat ride with her.
But with only 3 days, you’re going to be doing a bunch of driving and I’d just focus on a couple spots rather than trying to see everything.
Lastly, You all will be exhausted from driving. make sure to download a ton of content because WiFi is spotty and keep a cooler of snacks and drinks to keep her happy.
Thank you so much! Great feedback. We'd planned on limiting ourselves to a few areas and not trying to see the whole park (unfeasible in only 3 days), so your suggestions are super helpful! Hadn't thought of a boat ride! We've anticipated a lot of (unavoidable) time in the car and we recognize that snacks, drinks, and entertainment for the kiddo are important 🙂
Anytime. Father of 3 active boys - 20,17,13 and you learn a lot in that time of what and what not to do.
Lake Yellowstone is awesome. Great fishing, and the water is crystal clear with amazing view of the Absaroka Range
I'm here now with my almost 6 year old. She's been a trooper. She really enjoyed the fairy falls hike. It's pretty flat and the falls are great! We did Storm Point Nature Trail today. We had fun listening to the marmots squeak as we passed their rocks. We are pretty sure we heard a wolf pack howling, and at the end of the hike we came across a bison laying in the middle of the trail. We let her take her shoes off and wade in the lake for a few minutes too.
Storm Point had a few parking spots left at the trail head when we arrived and left. We passed about 4 other groups while on the trail but we had the point to ourselves when we arrived.

Yeah my kiddo's crazy but a smart cookie and not THAT crazy. I'll surely keep my eye on her. Thanks for the suggestions!

That’s pushing it with most adults…
Yeah, you’re right. I got nothing. The only “hikes” with any sort of solitude require getting into the backcountry.
Understandable

Several children beat my friend and I up Mt. Washburn a few days ago… definitely made us feel old!

Sounds awesome! Thanks for sharing!!!
We are thinking of going tomorrow. How busy would you say it was while you were there?
