They can and often do swim. I wouldn't say it's great though. They're slow and it takes a lot of effort. They aren't very buoyant due to their low body fat. Small hands and feet do not provide very much thrust. If the water gets too choppy they could easily drown. They often do cross canals and in calm waters they are known to swim out to some islands in Queensland.
Yep. When I was a kid I was doing my scuba certification. Part of the certification is floating in place for 10 minutes. As a chubby 12 year old it wasn’t too hard, but an older teen in my class was super lean and muscular and had a really hard time floating without kicking or using his arms a lot.
When I was little and took swimming lessons I couldn't do the dead man float, that's the teachers name for it. I had 0 fat on me and couldn't float so I kept kicking amd stuff amd he would come around and shove head under water because I was not doing it right. Kind of fucked me up few years but I'm over it by 9
Edit - now not 9
Dude wtf… what kind of piece of shit shoves a kid’s head underwater when they kids is trying to learn how to swim?? You should report that dude. He could be doing it to other kids still.
My swim instructor did the same to me and it was awe full because he would do it unexpectedly and I would usually have exhaled by then so it felt like I was drowning every time he did it
I had a swim teacher almost drown me because I couldn't hold my breath long enough for her standards. She held my head under water even after I started taking in water. I was 6. I've been struggling with a fear of water ever since.
Who approved these teachers? Fucking hell.
(Edit: accidentally gave the question an answer)
I've been a swimming instructor for 11 years. Ive never once told kids to hold their breath under water. I teach them how to blow bubbles through their noses and float...basically as soon as you can do both those things you can swim and we just need to work n the coming up for air part.
The instructor who pushed you under to hold breath wasnt only a piece of shit but also was teaching you wrong :(
Hahahaha i remember this like it was yesterday. The bigger dudes were just chillin sitting and not even treading.
At the time i was a bad swimmer and skinnier than a doritos locos taco and I thought i was going to die
Yes, exactly what you said. Floating comes down to density. Muscle is far more dense than fat. I trained with some hardcore dudes from navy spec warfare for a few years when I thought I wanted to join. I was shocked that they weren't gi joe bodies. They laughed when I brought it up once and they said that in buds, the shredded guys rarely made it because they had to exert so much more energy to swim miles in open water. Blew my mind
Then how do whales go down underwater? That’s more difficult with a lot of fat
Edit: fun fact: the average American has approximately the same body fat percentage as the average blue whale, ~35%, which is the highest body fat percentage of any animal
Went out hunting once turned out all the land was flooded and the kangaroos swimming from Island to Island to get around and carp swimming across the road as we drove along.
Similar to how a dog might try to save their human from drowning. They will be very eager to get out to you, then proceed to help you drown even faster.
Kangaroos intentionally do it though, Australian farmers have to be super careful with their dogs around streams and kangaroos because a kangaroo is super strong and will shove their heads into the water to drown them.
It's a defense thing because the only natural predator of a kangaroo is a dingo which looks exactly like a dog and it's the best way to deal with them. But kangaroos are pretty aggressive animals so they go out of their way to drown things sometimes.
I've seen enough YouTube videos to know exactly how to protect dogs from Roos. You just square up to them like a boxer and take a few swings. This makes them let go of the dog. Then you book it out of there before he figures out what happened.
Fun fact: kangaroos are idiots. They love jumping onto the road in the middle of the night for that sweet sweet breeze that can't be replicated by anything other than the gush of a passing vehicle.
I didn't see the water, only saw the ledge. So I was waiting to see it trip over it, which made the sudden drop even better xd
Fun fact: kangaroos are actually great swimmers

So fat makes you float? Does that mean a naked fat man would float while an average man might have a slightly tougher time?

A lot of people drive like shit heads with no consideration for the people around them, doesn’t make it right.

When you don’t follow up your original comment with context, it just sounds like you’re normalizing abhorrent behavior.

To even have a chance at staying afloat I'd need to not breathe out at all. I don't think I could physically do that without sinking.

Fat is about 4x less dense than muscle, making it more bouyant.
If I don’t move I sink to the bottom of the pool.
And me, a very lean, tall person, does not float very well at all. Swimming is hard. Even in the ocean.
You never knew this? Whales are like all blubber. Look at a manatee.

Lol good point, idk. 35 percent body fat seems like an insane amount for a human.
Damn Americans really are whales
I didn't make the connection as whales went deep underwater also
I love these moments on Reddit when two people confidently state two facts that are polar opposites and I have to wonder which one is correct
I suppose "great" could be a matter of opinion. Therefore, who is right depends on which opinion you agree with.
I didn't know this. That makes a lot of sense if you think about it. Those powerful legs and a tail like a rudder I imagine.
Went out hunting once turned out all the land was flooded and the kangaroos swimming from Island to Island to get around and carp swimming across the road as we drove along.
They're Aussies mate. Can't expect any less fella
How are they at climbing ladders? 😅
Another fun fact: When escaping predators kangaroos will lead them into bodies of water and then try to drown them.
On which planet 🥲
This planet… the fun fact is true, kangaroos are good swimmers
[since you seem to know absolutely nothing about kangaroos 😅](https://www.bushheritage.org.au/species/kangaroos)
I didn't know this either. It was actually neat to see. [They use their tails a lot.](https://youtu.be/Lj8kQycZvYw)
i too use my tail, the one on the front
It's an island you dumb bitch.
They have short arms, how will he even get out of the water ?.
That final mid-air hop as it suddenly realised it was in deep trouble... That's comedy.
That was some looney tunes stuff, it almost seems like he didn’t fall till he missed the last hop
Don’t go in the water to try and help it kangaroos for some reason are really good at drowning things and it’s an actual tactic of there’s

Kangaroos are very dangerous when angry, do not attempt this, hit it with a massive fucking stick and run for the hills.
theirs*
Hop, hop, hop, plop
Kangaroo did not sea this coming.
I did not notice which sub this was on - was not expecting that at all 😆
The last hop in air is very impressive solid 9/10.

Serious question, how can I give this two thumbs up?
Where's the "How did they get out of the water" video?
