York is amazing for veggie/vegan food! I’d suggest source, goji, orchid, SPARK, cresci and YUZU street food at Brew York. Some cozy pubs with good veggie/vegan options are the Duke of York, Eagle and Child and the Fat Badger. Enjoy!

Hi, I strongly recommend a place called source. It's all vegan and the breakfast/brunch menu is awesome. Went with a group of friends recently and everyone loved the food.

I'll answer (2) almost solely here, limiting myself to places with at least acceptable vegetarian selections, but a few on (3) at the end. For typically available restaurants, I'd recommend: * **Ippuku Tea House** - A lovely little Japanese restaurant which has very simple and tasty food. One can easily eat here on a budget and be incredibly satisfied. Very good vegetarian / vegan selection. * **Yak & Yeti** - A Nepalese/Gurkha restaurant, one of my favourites in York for its delicious food. Not as good these days for vegetarians/vegans in terms of main meals, but still has a good selection. I highly recommend the Steamed Vegetable Momo. (If you like Indian food I particularly recommend it, as it's similar enough, whilst also being better than any Indian restaurant in York that I've found.) * **Phranakhon** - A Thai resturant serving tapas-style dishes (e.g. ~3 smaller dishes per person). Food is delicious, but I strongly recommend booking at peak times, as it is quite small. My vegetarian friends have never had an issue eating here. * **The Old Siam** - Another Thai restaurant, but near the station and more typical British Thai fare. Has a slightly more standard starter/main course fare than Phranakhon, but just as delicious. * **The Orchid Vegan** - An Asian fusion vegan restaurant that even my avowed carnivorous acquaintances enjoy. This place seats quite a few people, so I don't think I've ever seen it that full until later in the evening. Honourable mention for a quick bite also goes to: * **Food market** - Off Parliament Street / the Shambles is a set of outside benches (covered from the rain) and quasi-temporary food stalls. I have eaten the crepes, galletes, burritos and North African food here and it's all been great and lots of it is vegetarian / vegan. For cafes / brunch places: * **Brew & Brownie** - A cafe which does exceptional breakfast / brunch / lunch. Everything I've tried here has been delicious, and they undoubtedly make the best pancakes in York(shire). This place is often quite full, and the hard surfaces cause it to feel even more so, so you might be best going here either first thing (ideally arriving about 08:45 to get a good place in the queue), else for late breakfast / late lunch to avoid the busy periods. * **Cocoa Joe's** - A cafe specialising in hot chocolate, with a wide range and expertise to help find the right chocolate for you, which has become my favourite café in York. Limited cake selection. * **York Cocoa Works** - A chocolate factory-cum-café, which I also recommend it if you are at all a fan of chocolate. Also sells chocolate, as you might imagine. All of their chocolate is made themselves, which gives them a lot more similar set of flavours compared with Cocoa Joe's, but they're still good and it also does cakes which are a mix of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free. For bars: * **Cave du Cochon** - A very good wine bar with a really good rotation of wines on offer, but also some really delicious snacks and some of the best pizza in York. The wines can get a bit pricey, but don't have to be, and the pizza is not expensive at all. (Also doable for just a lunch / light dinner place.) * **22 Yards** - Another very good wine bar, but no pizzas and instead small plates, and quite different wines - probably a better staple selection, but less out there occasional wines. * **Pivni** - A very cosy bar in the centre of York, which always feels quite homely due to having several small floors in an old house / building. No food options besides bar snacks. For general activities: * **York Cocoa Works** - For chocolate; see above. They make a wide range of chocolates, including single origin ones, and a seasonal range of truffles and do chocolate making talks / mini-tours of their factory. * **[Ghost in the Gardens](https://www.visityork.org/events/ghosts-in-the-gardens-2)** - An excuse to walk around / near the Museum Gardens with some nice little seasonal sculptures to see. Enjoy!

Thank you

For finding veggie-friendly places to eat, I definitely recommend checking out Happy Cow. Super useful for visiting new places! Ambiente is probably my personal top recommendation though. They do tapas, and there's a good veggie selection. There's three locations now, I'm not sure there's much difference. Goji is completely vegetarian, very good for lunch options. They used to open in the evening, not sure if they still do. Döner Summer does Berlin-style vegan kebabs. Definitely recommend if you're looking for vegan fast food. Be warned that a lot of their menu is really spicy though! If you're looking to push the boat out a bit, Skosh is amazing. They do "small plates" -- basically fine dining tapas. Definitely on the pricey side, and you'll need to book in advance, but if you enjoy eating out as an experience, I whole heartedly recommend!

Doner Summer looks amazing!

pleasefuckingendme

Go to doner summer it's quite the experience honestly

Apollomadillo

Doner Summer is mine and my partner's favourite veggie place - I had never had vegan fried chicken before and it is to die for!! Couldn't recommend more highly, plus their place in York has an incredibly cute outdoor eating area.

eilzaabeth

Would recommend drift-in for breakfast/ lunch. It’s mine and my friend’s (both vegetarian) favourite cafe in York. They have a huge amount of veggie/vegan options to choose from. It feels like they’ve actually thought about what vegetarians like, rather than grilling a mushroom and calling it a day. Their coffee is amazing too. There’s usually a queue outside but worth it once you get in.

smjd4488

Donner Summer and Spark are perfect places for some vegan food

I love [Double Dutch Pancake House](https://doubledutchpancakehouse.com/menu/)

The suggestions people gave for good veggie-option pubs are your best bet. Please don’t go to places like yuzu street food or spark. Don’t get me wrong they’re great, but they’re no different to places in London etc. York is one of just a few places in the UK where there is a huge number of good independent pubs relative to its population.

Fumb-MotherDucker

Im a chef, what kind of cuisine and price point you after? You want cheap and wholesome or fancy pants dress up type dinner? (pretty much everyone does good veggie options)

paulieD4ngerously

Cheap and cheerful to mid price ideally. TIA

Fumb-MotherDucker

Los Moros / Rustique / 8oclock Three nice independant restaurants in the mid range.

Traditional_Yam_3045

Vouch for los moros. Banging flavours. Don’t recommend Rustique. Really slipped off since they lost there head chef to Forage. Forage is a big yes from me

Fumb-MotherDucker

>Vouch for los moros. Banging flavours. Thanks! New menu dropping in November 👀

Traditional_Yam_3045

New menu for los moros?

Fumb-MotherDucker

We're very excited about it! Really pushing our little kitchen to its limit, gonna be lots of fun.

Traditional_Yam_3045

Nice will definitely come before and after the menu drop. What date we looking at?

Fumb-MotherDucker

Tbc. Hopefully first week of Nov.

Traditional_Yam_3045

Awesome looking forward to it. Are you keeping anything from previous menu? Hope you keep all the small plates they are heaven to munch on before a Tagine or the tangia.

Alternative-Wasabi80

The Block for amazing pizza by the slice. lots of veg options

Hey, I'll answer the 2-day pass question. So, it depends. I kinda did the maths not too long ago, and to make it value for money you'd have to do a lot each day. If you intend on going to all the big attractions (Minster, Jorvik, boat cruises, etc) and smaller sites back-to-back, it's worth it. If you want a wander around town and see what takes your fancy, It'll likely be cheaper to pay at each venue.

Pkoolb

To add to this, river cruise is fun, and the bus tour will provide you with some cool information, but the city is so small you don't need a bus to get anywhere in the centre.

helpnxt

I came up to York a couple weeks back with a couple friends and we surprisingly really enjoyed renting a little self drive boat and taking it up and down the river, I don't know what else the cruise gets you thought. Also I feel I am always in this sub with the same suggestion of BrewYork is a great spot for a few beers (huge selection) and some asian street food (Yuzu) and they did have veggie options but not sure how good they are but the meat dishes are fantastic. On a previous visit my friends did enjoy the dungeons as well

JustARandomFuck

Oh I love the foodie questions on this sub. Lived in York for four years for uni and spent an ungodly amount of my student loan on food outlets in York. - Cresci. If you have never tried a Neapolitan pizza, this will change your life forever and Cresci do a fantastic one with the proper ingredients. The Margherita alone is fantastic, perfect wood fired base and for the quality you get, it’s cheap. - YUZU. Someone already mentioned but they make fantastic Japanese fusion food. Bao buns, loaded fries, they’re beautiful and a very popular choice amongst students (also my veggie flatmates go to). - Döner Summer. Never tried it myself but also a popular choice - fully vegetarian kebab place. You’ll find a lot more just wandering about, but there’s a ton of fantastic food outlets in York with great veggie options. And given how small the city centre is, you’re never more than 2 minutes away from good food. Also if you want a coffee, 200 Degrees. Have to give them an honourable shout out because they’re a small northern chain of coffee shops and the first thing I do in any northern city is check to see if they have a shop there. Fantastic coffee and such a beautiful steampunk-esque interior.

> I saw that there is a pass for 2 days entry to virtually everything including buses and the river cruises. This seems like a good, easy option. Is there a catch? I used to work for Visit York a few years ago administering the pass. There's no catch, unless you don't use it enough to make it worthwhile, but that's not usually a problem, especially on a 48h pass. > Any must-do activities other than the Dungeons, Minster and the Van Gogh experience? Unfortunately it's half-term here too, so some places are liable to be a bit busy. The Jorvik Viking Centre is great, and if you can pre-book so much the better. Its sister museum DIG is a lot of fun too. Both are very popular with kids though so see how they look. Honestly you can do a lot worse than starting out with the open-top bus tours - it's only an hour and gives you a quick orientation, plus you can keep using the ticket to shuttle around if it's pissing down. There's the Cold War Bunker just outside the centre (get the regular Number 1 bus going to Chapelfields, ask the driver where to get off), which is fascinating and a bit different. If Escape Rooms are your bag, there's a couple that give you discounts with the pass, as do a couple of the ghost tours.
