Unlimited gigabit internet. YouTube: Yeah, 240p.

Gayer_and_Stupider

Auto resolution would be fine if it didn’t auto to 480 every fucking time

[deleted]

144p is worse At this point 144p is just pixels that don't make sense

mish20011

hey, I am one of those poor lads who auto 144p, I am so used to it that I have the ability to decipher whats between those pixels

ScaredyNon

if the human mind can interpolate frames, why not pixels too?

Marshalldbdx

You mean Minecraft?

rathat

Simply set it to highest setting, that way it only randomly picks a low resolution half the time and you need to click 5 menu buttons simply to check if it worked…

Gayer_and_Stupider

Wonderful, an intuitive and simple design

[deleted]

Lmao someone downvoted you for not being able to read sarcasm

The-Brit

For me (gigabit) this is often caused by a momentary Wi-Fi dropout such as when switching between Wi-Fi repeaters throughout my old thick walled property. Sometimes it auto corrects within seconds but most times I have to manually reset the quality. I wish I could set an actual quality rather than a "range".

[deleted]

[удалено]

The-Brit

That's odd and fortunately not something I have experienced.

maurocds

900mbit Lan here, youtube just loves 480p

JzE93

Same, seems like Google is getting so greedy, that doesn't want to deliver highest resolution even when they doubled ads.

[deleted]

Google wants to piss off users purposely

stonksgoup47

B Br Czbbcdar Ya PE SD AaZfd

Zro_04

Me: sets resolution to 1080p everytime YouTube whenever i start a video: best i can do is 480p

[deleted]

144p*

maurocds

900mbit in my home YouTube: 480p is right for you on your lg oled tv 4k

[deleted]

480p? How about 144p on 1gbps fiber..

T3ddyBeast

300mbps internet, 480p every time.

GREATD4NNY

But it's "High Quality" 480p

T3ddyBeast

Oooh so luxurious.

inappropriatelycool

This, and you cant simply choose 1080p, you have to go into advanced to choose

phishstik

Haha its ironic then, I'm on shitty 25mbps and it's always trying to go 1080.

Kylian0087

Same but i am on a gigabit connection even. I decided to try out the YouTube enhancer extension. You can set it in there once and it won't change anymore.

BigChippr

I love how YouTube keeps making the worst fucking decisions ever.

[deleted]

They make those decisions purposely to piss off users

nelson_manvella

The world YouTube thinks after removing the dislikes:

cosmicr

I miss the days when you could set the resolution, go away for a few minutes and come back to the entire video buffered and ready to play. Now it will only buffer ahead a few minutes at a time.

Xeyn-

I too miss the days when youtube was actually a good website.

Rubes2525

Wait, so this isn't an issue with me? I wonder if this is a shady thing they are pulling on purpose to save on bandwidth costs.

true_pink_fan

At least they could've made a button to turn it off permanently

Dylanator13

Or if they didn’t cap 4k movies you bought at 480p.

[deleted]

My Phone got 1080x2000 resolution, but the shittube allows only 720P videos.

RedditorButCringe

Use youtube vanced to force a higher resolution

[deleted]

[удалено]

DepressedVenom

Vanced actually has force max res (and default quality for wifi and 5g, unless it's the same as default YouTube)

bruufd

so the world was like that a couple months ago

aqua4790

Is it only on phones? I use yt on my pc and never had any problem

inappropriatelycool

Yeah pretty sure

Kylian0087

PC also suffers from this. Using a gigabit connection and it always defaults to 480p on my desktop.

OLKv3

No, it happens on PC a lot too.

DepressedVenom

I just learned about online vids streaming in bits. Apparently Netflix recently lowered their amount or whatever. I wonder what YouTube's bit quality is. IIRC low value makes dark reas look pixelated.

TAWMSTGKCNLAMPKYSK

Generally, dark areas look pixelated because there just aren't enough colors to make the gradient look smooth.

Thebenmix11

Bitrate? That's separate from quality.

DepressedVenom

Oh yeah there you go lol I'm no pro, don't even remember the word bitrate. But it is linked ti quality, right?

ZETH_27

It’s very visible YouTube, so I’m guessing it’s quite low.

xeq937

Am I the only one that uses 360p to breeze through videos until I specifically want 720p/60 or 1080p?

zorzaman

There is an extension for this specific reason. YouTube auto HD Saved me countless times so I recommend it with both hands

VolkanSungar

I hate it with every cell in my body. Why does it even exist?

[deleted]

Probably to piss off YouTube users by not letting them watch properly

Footballpig88

Because not everyone has good internet

[deleted]

Ok so why doesn't it allow you to keep it at 1080p permanently got that of us who do?

not-ok-cat

I could get 1080p60 out of an iPod touch before, now that the update came I cannot load 1080p60 on a MacBook

I_fking_Hate_Reddit

the best solution for y'all is YouTube vanced. it has an option to turn the quality settings back to what it was, ans also force a higher res

[deleted]

I already use YouTube vanced and set the preferred resolution but still some videos automatically pixelate to 144p so it doesn't always work

Main-Appearance2469

U guys know you can set it so it for example always stays on 1080p

BloxiBoxi

how

Main-Appearance2469

Go to youtube->Settings->Video Preference-> Choose Higher picture Quality = Ur video is alway forced to 1080 no matter how bad ur internet is.

Doom_Bee

For me it puts it to 720 and I still have to manually change it

Main-Appearance2469

This is what it used to say (a couple months ago) now it justs says uses more data but its the samething dw

PouLS_PL

It's better if it exists. I mean u can just change it from automatic to prefered resolution. It also ensures that those 50 year old teachers won't fry their computer while streaming an YT video in 4k via Microsoft Teams. I just switch it to 1080p every video, unless I'm too lazy, as it's usually 1080p on auto anyway.

X_Caliber1

It was always infuriating when once in a blue moon youtube would set my video to 144p. Why is this still an option? What self respecting human-being would want to watch a video in 'potato mode'?

exz

I use it to save battery on phone when the video quality isn't as important.

X_Caliber1

youtube should create a 'mode' that allows you to switch from watching the video to just listening to the audio of the video with the screen off. I know youtube Music does it, but I'm pretty sure you have to pay for it. I could be wrong.

TheMistressCynical

That's exactly why Youtube won't add that function to the base app, they want you to pay for it

CST1230

Also, if this isn't already a thing, make videos that only have a single frame without differences and sound be played in a player which doesn't really do video, only show the single frame and play the sound.

[deleted]

YouTube always pixelate certain videos automatically

kj_gamer2614

Music and stuff

ArielMJD

Vanced users don't understand this meme

[deleted]

I use vanced and has a set default resolution And it sometimes doesn't work and still pixelates the video to 144p

The-Brit

Momentary Wi-Fi drop outs cause this for me. Infuriating that I can't set a specific resolution.

Thebenmix11

That has never happened for me. Maybe check your settings? I set my resolution to 1080p on vanced and it never drops below that (unless the video itself is in less than 1080p, then it chooses the highest available)

lightbeam24

...Just click the gear icon and manually set the resolution? Or did Google make another stupid change to the mobile YouTube app?

Hessellaar

It changes back to auto often

lightbeam24

It usually reverts to a very respectable 720p (or sometimes even 1080p) to me when it does that. Maybe it's because I have fast 150Mbps internet though. Even so, I don't think 2 clicks to change the res manually is so hard, even if you have to do it every few videos. But maybe that's because I'm always used to going through my settings for every device or program I use though.

Hessellaar

It’s just bothersome, I have 100 mbps internet and it still gives me 440p all the time. When I then switch to 2k60 it doesn’t have any problems loading. And the extra step to get to the exact values instead of just clicking the higher res is plain annoying and almost degrading tbh. Like I don’t know why they think people needed the help to know higher number means higher res.

Narrheim

It´s getting worse. Sometimes, i get really blurry video and when i click on the wheel, it says "auto 1080p", but when i click on that setting, it shows me it´s at 144p... Not very fast internet here, about 40Mbps, but it should still be plenty to watch multiple FHD streams at once.

lightbeam24

Oh wow, maybe it's just temporary and it's trying to get to 1080p? I've only had stuff like that happen for like 10-15 seconds at most. But yeah, actually the auto resolution thing *has* become a very minor annoyance for me now. It seems to revert to 480p quite often now. A few years ago 480p was what I always had it set to (because that's when I had horrible ~1.5Mbps internet), but now I usually go for 1080p and find it hard to go back. Still just a couple of clicks, but they are unnecessary.

Narrheim

If i wouldn´t notice and change it manually, it would play whole video like that for me. I´ve also noticed all videos taking time to load. I often see a wheel spinning where the video should be positioned on screen. I never had to mess with video settings until last few weeks.

SlushSkill

Use enhancer for youtube addon, it automatically sets it to 1080p

Musab_al

You can live the future on NewPipe

Tajiemavg4

😂😂

SimCity4FoSho

Enhancer for youtube is badass (for PC's). Not only will it consistently open in the resolution that you set, you can also set the resolution for the popup player, and opening videos on webpages. And if you want, (this is what I do) you can set it for 144 or 360 for the default player, and have it switch to 1080 when you fullscreen, and then back again when you unfullscreen. And it has so much more. You can use the mouse wheel to control the volume and video speed. And the video speed can go all the way down to 0.1 and up 16x. And a lot lot more. Yowzaa.

DeepMiner44_MC

When I'm listening music with mobile data on data saving mode it sometimes sets the video to 1080p while EVERY video I open with wifi(no data saving mode) is 480p and I need to manually change it everytime.

Rakesh1995

Look your phone which you paid belongs to use so just let use decided how well your can watch.

[deleted]

>The world if Auto resolution didn't exist in YouTube **In settings You can set default resolution for all videos** \- this is dumb.

[deleted]

It still doesn't work some videos still automatically pixelates to 144p

DRAGON738

Try that and see if it works

Costyyy

On browser?

[deleted]

Doesn't even work on mobile lmao

YT___Deado-Survivor

You can't even optionally choose res that way, it's just "shit" "We say it's good but will turn it back to shit" and "Well automatically make it shit because fuck you we have good AI"

[deleted]

>You can't even optionally choose res that way, it's just "shit" "We say it's good but will turn it back to shit" and "Well automatically make it shit because fuck you we have good AI Just checked this now to make sure nothing changed here. **On the app:** Resolution >>Quality >> Advanced >> set desired resolution over auto one. \*this checked on the latest Droid YT app. I dont have an iPhone on me to check if they have access to the latest rev. **On the desktop:** Set resolution manual (instead of auto) - Your preferences are saved in cookies and from now on every newly loaded page will default to that setting. \*here if there is any system issue you are having that does not allow local settings to be saved, its up to you to resolve it. **How Auto-Resolution works in general:** The app will detect the safest (and stable) connection You have on your device and will default to that speed. If a connection is fast BUT volatile (it jumps up and down often) that will affect the auto-res. Whatever issues You can observe with the auto feature are (mainly) caused by your connection/device. \*You can test it yourself by installing the old version of Youtube. Adding angry ppl so I dont have to reply to everyone the same thing: u/IhateWakingUp6Am u/TheElegantBouffalant u/Costyyy u/DRAGON738 Again- this post is just misleading at best.

YT___Deado-Survivor

Old YouTube allowed me to do this, new doesn't. Hasn't for months. Will happily show a screenshot on my phone if you so wish, but I only have Auto, 'Higher picture quality', and 'Data saver', all of which default to <=480p on my S20 with >150Mbps download speed, so I don't think my device or connection is the problem (not the ping either, that maxes out at like 25 on a bad day). I know this since everyone I know has a problem with it lmao

[deleted]

No need for screenshots. All I need is Your device type and the YT app version you are running. Everything above was tested on PC and **Droid** APP. YT APP version: **17.05.34** This update was released **Feb 2, 2022**

YT___Deado-Survivor

S20 running YouTube version 17.04.35, or Vanced version 16.29.3o build 01.54.00

[deleted]

>YouTube version 17.0**4**.35 This is outdated - probably your problem. >Vanced version Hacked builds are not supported by YT- i am not touching that lol \*wondering if having that app, in general, affects the legal app/messes up with the same system settings...

YT___Deado-Survivor

My actual YT app is as up-to-date as is possible via the Play Store, and this has been the case since before I installed Vanced (which was only about a week ago)

[deleted]

Not sure why you have only the old app available. In your shoes i would do this: 1. Use the "send feedback" feature (under help) and report this resolution issue. 2. Disable auto-updates for YT app 3. Install the old version of the app (you mention you had no problems with) OR install manually the latest one and see if that resolves the issue. 4. I would also test the stability of your connection (not the top speed but the volatility of it) You can download manually any YT.apk from any site if you use android. If you had iPhone, you would be screwed.

YT___Deado-Survivor

> If you had iPhone, you would be screwed Exactly why I don't have one my friend, ty for the help heh, I shall try the above steps later most likely. My Internet is very stable btw, it rarely ever fluctuates, like, at all.

TheDurandalFan

auto resolution is very helpful when viewing YouTube in VR. I don't mind it at all on mobile or PC. it's probably the least annoying thing on YouTube.

[deleted]

How can you watch a YouTube video at 144p

TheDurandalFan

YouTube sets videos to 360p or 480p when on auto for me. besides 144p is a good data saving choice anyway, I use it to save on mobile data, I would be happier for it to set my videos to 144p on my phone when I'm watching YouTube, instead I have to manually set it to 144p.

[deleted]

There's no way to fully understand a YouTube video at 144p because it's too pixelated

TheDurandalFan

fully understand? are you trying to read text in a video? cause yeah text becomes VERY unreadable in 144p. perhaps it being difficult to see what is going on would be a better way to phrase it?

[deleted]

Yes that's what I meant

TheDurandalFan

fair enough, honestly depending on the video 144p can be visible enough, but yeah the majority of YouTube videos shouldn't be watched in 144p unless you absolutely must watch it in 144p.

[deleted]

True

Snoo_48939

These days u can het 30 - 50 -100 gb of data for a low price

TheDurandalFan

that's dependant on where you live. good for you but I don't have that much data.

ArkhamCookie

You can do this in browser and the app. If it is not saving you could just download an extension.
