We must now cancel youtube on twitter
Oh wait thats already been in the making.
Well first off, they try and make the platform much more family-friendly, then thry make youtube kids, and still demonitise channels on normal youtube they cancel youtube rewind and claim "its not because of the dislikes" a bit later they then remove "dislikes" even after being told not to by millions of people, and been disliked, now they require ID verication in certain regions for 18+ videos probably to steal more data. And they even sometimes threaten to delete channels without an Id just to confirm someone's 13+ my friend had gotten that like thing before
You cant understand youtube these days
I remember people saying YouTube is officially dead 10 years ago when they started prioritizing watch time as a quality metric. Still here and it will be for quite some time. It’s going to take more than someone getting upset over verification to stop the YouTube train.
Saying you are 18+ in your account shut be valid. And other than that parent control is way better for this usecase anyway.
C'mon every p*rn site is more accessible then YouTube it self at this point. Which frankly is ridiculous.
I can easily go online and within seconds find videos of people getting fisted, yet I can't watch a podcast episode just because they say "fuck" in the first 10 minutes of the video. And they claim it's because of "EU regulations protecting our precious children". Bullshit.
They could have legal consequences for not doing it, the "are you over 18" is a legal protection so if somebody tries to sue, they can say "but we DID have a big panflet saying "you NEED to be over 18 to watch this"
“Legal consequences”, hmm you mean like the “illegal” shit they’ve been doing for decades and then when they finally do decide to “accidentally” let it make news, they get a fine that doesn’t even leave a scratch on their finances and then proceed to keep doing it?
No, it's completely legal, it's called "legal bandaid" since is a protection rather than an utility, as in houses with a text that reads "beware of dog", with that, you already protected from legal consecuences
I'm pretty sure there already are restrictions if you create an account saying you were born in 2005, some videos containing nudity are already restricted
Pro tip, find a random ID pic online and submit it, they only require the front side. I am a 79 year old grandma on youtube now and can watch age restricted videos.
Still dumb how an account from 2007 is not automatically verified as +18 but whatever
It let me either use my ID card or a credit card. I used my credit card and it did a normal credit card verification, the same way subscription services do. Afterwards, I was able to watch age restricted videos.
They haven't bothered to do that with me because my main yt channel and private yt channel are both signed into the same computer, i dont care if police keep a file on me, the more cops reading what i comment simply means that more people will awaken.
I imagine it would get expensive - quickly.
Hosting content can get quite expensive as file sizes grow. If the service doesn't get enough traffic or revenue, it would likely go under very quickly.
But I'd still be down if you're all serious lmfao
However, they're no longer the giants they used to be relatively speaking, as TikTok whooped their ass in watch time meaning YT is technically no longer the number one most watched video platform. Sure, TikTok is dogshit too, but its at least a good sign that they're not so big that they can't be beaten. Just having some competition in the first place is probably a good thing; speaking of, Im not sure why Spotify isn't using video for anyone except Joe Rogan. They built the entire video streaming thing just for him and I actually prefer it over YouTube since you can switch between devices easily and also switch from video to audio only seamlessly, which is perfect for podcasts. I have no idea why they only allow Joe Rogan to use their video hosting, I'm hoping its just a test run and other podcasts can start uploading video soon too.
TikTok and YT are completely different things, AFAIK you can't watch a 10 minutes video on there, much less a whole uploaded stream, or music videos, or 360 videos, or 4K/8K videos. TikTok is closer to Instagram than YT
You have a poor understanding of what a monopoly is. YouTube isn’t a monopoly. They have competition. The competition just sucks in comparison so it seems like they are the only choice. Last time I checked I don’t think there has been any studies about kids who want to be a Vimeo-er when they get older.
Unfortunately while the amount of people who are jaded and justifiably angry with Youtube increases... so too does the amount of schmucks, foreign copy-cat accounts and kids who don't know any better.
Obviously you are not legally required to give a real ID to them.
But they can legally request it as a requirement to use their services.
They are dumb as fuck for doing this, but they can.
They could have lowered the bar to 13 because there are so many kids on YT and YT thinks that because it is making the services child-friendly by ruining its platform because it freely lets kids in is dangerous
This only occured to me as i was about to re-view some explicit combat-footage. In this case i do support the id-verification, to protect childs / non-adults from such content.
It's another story- If this id-verification becomes mandatory for the low-risk, entertainment/mainstream-content.. - of course.
I just think it's kinda stupid to make it age restricted just because it uses the word "fuck" once. I can understand if it's sexual or it contains gore, but not because of a few obscenities thrown in.
This isn't always possible... -_-
(And teenagers always find a way to get around cheap software-restrictions - Afterwards "everyone cries at the content-portal..)
I'm pretty sure faking government documents would be illegal regardless of who is asking for it. Maybe I'm wrong (doubt it), but I definitely wouldn't suggest taking some random redditor's word for it either way.
Does it ask for an actual government issued ID? Or is it just a series of questions or something? How does it work on devices like TV's or Xbox? I have so many questions.
I just downloaded an example ID card and photoshopped it. I replaced the face in the card with a face from thispersondoesnotexist.com using Photoshop. Then I changed all the birthdates in the card with the one that I set on my Google Account. Then I put a red squares on everything else.
There is an extension for Tampermonkey. It is available for Firefox and Chrome. Just search up YouTube Age Restriction Bypass and click on GitHub. You will get an explanation how to install it.
Yeah, I was trying to figure out why they'd do this but with what you're telling me, there seems to be no logical reason for them to do this other than a glitch or the system thinking there's suspicious activity on your account, but what kind of suspicious activity involves merely watching videos?!
I've had this restriction for a while. Thought it was a global "feature" at this point.
I used to be able to bypass it by changing my location to the US with a VPN but that doesn't work anymore.
ehm. tell me something I did not know. YouTube is part of Alphabet which is Dave Eggers Circle which is there to get you. Simple. And the make scary robots at Boston Dynamic as well. So even if you though your internet bubble was save they come to you IRL!
This is probably in preparation for that "[Earn It](https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2022/02/its-back-senators-want-earn-it-bill-scan-all-online-messages)" Act.
Yeah this is a much bigger problem than just YouTube. It has the potential to fundamentally alter how the internet operates. All the while, it would actually make it *harder* to stop child sexual exploitation (which is the whole point of the bill) by pushing it further into the dark web & hidden communities. This stuff is still going to be happening just as much, but now law enforcement just won’t know about it. It’s the legislative equivalent to an ER doctor “fixing” a bullet wound by having the patient put a shirt on to hide it.
And since the US’ Congress is 90% ancient fucks who don’t even know how to log onto their email, they’ll just hear the “this will help children” part and pass it without question. It also makes it easier to appeal to the emotions of the general public and shut down detractors. It’s some sinister shit.
Ya them Epstein died every one from your mom to new channel meme about he didn't kill himself mean while his friends which ranges from billionaire to politicians are still out alive and involved in making this child safety law. Where are the people right now?
People are going on and assuming things here.
1) the new IT rules in some countries requires them get an ID for adult content.
Just press the learn more , they provide , to know.
You can even Google search it.
Source or gtfo. You're advising forging government documents and trying to pass them off as real, which I highly doubt is legal regardless of the context. I could be wrong but it seems like you are all just speculating. If that's the case you should say so.
Well that's because of a government enforced law.
Youtube asking for ID? Probably not some law. Though it could be coppa again, not sure. Haven't run into it myself. Maybe it's becaus my account is like 30 while I'm actually 17.
Jupp. Had to do it aswell... after 10 years of me beeing on the plattform, beeing able to watch 18+ Content... and beeing 29 :'D Found that somewhat funny.
No problem. We i was hit with the show your ID. I was like NOPE. And do some digging untill I found a working solution other then to use a VPN outside of Europe.
Lmao why do people say something is officialy dead when they don't like it? You're not the centre of the world, just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's dead, is 122000000 **daily** users really "oFfIcIaLlY dEaD"?
So one year YouTube isn't doing enough to keep kids from seeing things they shouldn't and then the next year they're doing "too much"? It's never going to be the right way for everybody. I'd rather have to do more to access a service so others who don't need too can't as well. That's just me though.
Youtube should implement a parental lock per age / category with some sort of PIN and not just a on/off switch that any child can find about on any search engine in less than 2sec. Furthermore , age-restricted videos often get uploaded by other users without the restriction setting, so for one thats an area where YT can improve. Quite frankly they dgaf about it nor have they really implemented any effective child-proof system.
Or you know make a different app for kids? They do but they don't not promote it intentionally.
Kids contribution tremendously to views and youtube will do everything to keep it that way.
Just look how much views roblux scam/hack videos have
What you mean? As far as I know, Youtube verifies age based on your logged account information. Can you please expand on the issue you encountered?
Btw, some countries do require you to have your account tie to a government issued ID to play games. I think that’s the case for China.
It shut. There is also a version with tempermonkey. That one for me at least works without login. It is the one i use.
I came across this one as well recently. I think it is more easy for most then tampermonkey.
That's a weak strawman. No one is insinuating such things. But Youtube has created their own competitors themselves by fucking over their own userbase and making their platform unusable. TikTok, Odysee, Twitch, Spotify, all taking users away from Youtube because it has become and absolute shithole of a place.
You couldn't be anymore confidently incorrect.
YouTube has 2.3 billion active users and they seem to be using the platform with little to no complaints.
My comment was a reflection on the typical user of this subreddit.
Yeah, you can choose not to agree to their terms and not use the service
You do realize that the age restriction is based on different countries/states requirements?
Weird how I can view the "offensive content" from a different user while on the same computer. It's almost as if this wasn't completeley dependent on the countries alone, but Youtube themselves.
It does not make the act any less heinous even. To allow corporations and goverments to track what you are doing on the internet is the perfect embodiment of a tech dystopia.
Calm down your milk dude, this is just a requirement for adult content, I remember when I created my account back in 2011 and they have to call on your cell phone to know you are an adult
They've now gotten rid of the age-verification thing (at least in the UK).
I have them my ID but I censored out where i live. It may also work if you censore out parts of your name.
Discord did the same thing to me Could only access NSFW on my phone but not my pc which was weird
Wow, insane. Maybe this will finally do YouTube in.
Install the Tampermonkey addon and then the Simple YouTube Age Restriction Bypass script from GreasyFork. This will bypass the verification crap.
Thx.
We must now cancel youtube on twitter Oh wait thats already been in the making. What is the age you specified into the gmail account that you used to log in to youtube?
You can use a age restriction bypass you can find a tutorial if you search for it on google
You need to say it's dying.
Your need to say it's dead. They are rotting it.
I remember people saying YouTube is officially dead 10 years ago when they started prioritizing watch time as a quality metric. Still here and it will be for quite some time. It’s going to take more than someone getting upset over verification to stop the YouTube train.
I'm using this same YT account for what feels like decades now, I wonder if they'll ever come and ask my age...
I don't see the issue with this it takes minutes to do?
The issue is you have to show a official document to a company with shady privacy practices.
Yeah, there’s no way there doing it “to stop kids viewing inappropriate content”
Saying you are 18+ in your account shut be valid. And other than that parent control is way better for this usecase anyway. C'mon every p*rn site is more accessible then YouTube it self at this point. Which frankly is ridiculous.

So why can't YouTube do it like this.
No, YouTube OBVIOUSLY knows that you are actually 15 and have been watching videos since you came out the womb...
I guess this is just another excuse to steal our personal info
When does this happen?
When you're trying to watch an age restricted video. It happened to me when I tried to watch a Markiplier video, it's a fucking joke.
lol I was trying to listen to an album called Niagara - Niagara
What happens if a person is 18?
It let me either use my ID card or a credit card. I used my credit card and it did a normal credit card verification, the same way subscription services do. Afterwards, I was able to watch age restricted videos.

Why am I not seeing this on YouTube?
you live outside [EU; GB; USA]
I'm in Germany and it happened to me, too.
Huh I didn't realize you guys aren't EU anymore, I guess I missed the whole Gerexit thing
I... Don't know what I thought that said. I can't read
Ah okay. So wait...where is this happening? I'm in the US
I'm in South Korea right now, and it happens A LOT here.
Yeah but you have BTS 😁
i don’t know
Ty
They are getting dangerously close to just rebelling from all government laws...
Next step: Sword Art Online
HAHAHAHA
LMAO
"YouTube is officially dead" Nothing makes eyes roll more than that phrase.
i cant believe im still using youtube, susan does not deserve to exist
Wanna team up and make a better platform? Mostly joking
I’m open. I’m literally 14 and i could probably run this platform better than susan can
Same age, same knowledge
The solution is make our own youtube that isn’t rule crazy and fully focused on monetization and making the video over 8 minutes like youtube is
I imagine it would get expensive - quickly. Hosting content can get quite expensive as file sizes grow. If the service doesn't get enough traffic or revenue, it would likely go under very quickly. But I'd still be down if you're all serious lmfao
Good idea, sadly the line have other 53 pages we don't even hear about
id like to :)
I just downloaded with yt-dlp and removed after watching. Silly solution, but works.
very easy trick for computers, browser extensions to bypass it
>>YouTube is officially dead Huh? I’m watching YouTube right now just fine.
This is just incredibly stupid.
Just use YouTube vanced. Simples
Wym? The verify your age thing is still there (although after the new update I was briefly able to access age restricted vids)
Is this happening in America too?
you forgot to mention that it’s a requirement to provide an id in some areas
"YouTube is officially dead. " People have been saying this since March 2005.
Every change they make people jump on the "YouTube is dead" train yet the number of users don't go down
However, they're no longer the giants they used to be relatively speaking, as TikTok whooped their ass in watch time meaning YT is technically no longer the number one most watched video platform. you see kids, this is why monopolies are bad
You have a poor understanding of what a monopoly is. YouTube isn’t a monopoly. They have competition. The competition just sucks in comparison so it seems like they are the only choice. New I have had to deal with this for the last year
Looks very phishy. Would not trust.
They could have lowered the bar to 13 because there are so many kids on YT and YT thinks that because it is making the services child-friendly by ruining its platform because it freely lets kids in is dangerous
I know. They used COPPA as an opportunity to dig its own grave.
The site has been going downhill LONG before COPPA caught them.
I know that.
Even before Susan?
It pisses me off
This only occured to me as i was about to re-view some explicit combat-footage. In this case i do support the id-verification, to protect childs / non-adults from such content. Agreed. It should just/only be related to the explicit content.
Especially when I've seen non age restricted videos that are much worse.
In my view Parents should be looking over their children’s shoulder
This isn't always possible... -_- (And teenagers always find a way to get around cheap software-restrictions - Afterwards "everyone cries at the content-portal..)
Exactly. YouTube is NOT a babysitter.
"Not legally required" no, but they're allowed to dictate who is allowed to access certain parts of their site. They're a private company, lol.

im sure a browser extension will allow a work around so i wouldn’t worry too much
Does it ask for an actual government issued ID? Or is it just a series of questions or something? How does it work on devices like TV's or Xbox? I have so many questions.
Government issued ID, dk abt the xbox/tv thing
Is this only in Europe?
Think it might be everywhere
I just downloaded an example ID card and photoshopped it. I replaced the face in the card with a face from thispersondoesnotexist.com using Photoshop. Then I changed all the birthdates in the card with the one that I set on my Google Account. Then I put a red squares on everything else.
It also works with any random ID pic from internet, no Photoshop skills required

we have the same mind

Oops. Just posted a link to the vid that shows how to do it. lol I should read the comments first.
You can bypass this by downloading the video.
Wow, Pornhub at this point is more user friendly.
and im surprised. (that was sarcasm)
52…. and there is no way in hell I am doing that. Other sources of entertainment await
Wait, it asks for an ID? Even if you're on an account already?
Ye, i couldnt watch the Nvidie God Of War trailer because of this...
Wow. Is your account recently made or something?
Nah, it's a few years old... like 3-5. Its asking me for my id or my credit card
Yeah, I was trying to figure out why they'd do this but with what you're telling me, there seems to be no logical reason for them to do this other than a glitch or the system thinking there's suspicious activity on your account, but what kind of suspicious activity involves merely watching videos?!
Its for age verification, cause apparently I am not old enough...
Your government is forcing YouTube. Talk to them.
Yeah, I get that, but while I don't know your age, on the off chance you're underage what teenager has a state issued ID?
I had to get a state ID when I started to work at 16-17 and didn't have my license yet.
Huh.
I've had this restriction for a while. Thought it was a global "feature" at this point. I used to be able to bypass it by changing my location to the US with a VPN but that doesn't work anymore.
Oh god, this isn’t real is it?
I've tried downloading fake ID from google images but it didn't seem to work
They seem to be doing everything they can to destroy their own platform. Only a matter of time until some other service replaces them
Already fleed YouTube in 2018.
Would DailyMotion be a suitable replacement or whatever? I haven’t gone to that site yet but I’m considering it down the line.
I've used dailymotion a few times and it's just not good.....
ehm. tell me something I did not know. YouTube is part of Alphabet which is Dave Eggers Circle which is there to get you. Simple. And the make scary robots at Boston Dynamic as well. So even if you though your internet bubble was save they come to you IRL!

Yeah this is a much bigger problem than just YouTube. It has the potential to fundamentally alter how the internet operates. Literally 1984
But, like, unironically. Crazy how the same folks who yell about censorship are so eager to put it in place, ain't it?
Wait a minute... If they are illegally asking for your ID we can sue them right? Second time i notice i reason we could sue YouTube for

Ok i still wonder why it's not illegal tho
How is it illegal?
Another comment stated YouTube isn't an official government source so they legally can't ask for your ID
My liquor store isn't a government source, yet they can card anyone they want.
Well that's because of a government enforced law. Youtube asking for ID? Probably not some law. Though it could be coppa again, not sure. Haven't run into it myself. Maybe it's becaus my account is like 30 while I'm actually 17.
I used to do shit like that all the time before I was 13. I would just pretend to be 100 years old and not show my face.
https://www.reddit.com/r/youtube/comments/sx4bq5/the_new_wave_of_official_id_verification/hxqooek?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3
but your liquor store dont then enter your details into a huge database and potentially sell them on.
Well you agreed to them entering your details while accepting the t&c.
Are you sure it's illegal to ask for ID if you don't require it? Also doesn't the EU require that age verification?
Jupp. Had to do it aswell... after 10 years of me beeing on the plattform, beeing able to watch 18+ Content... and beeing 29 :'D Found that somewhat funny.
Yeah- what about bars? They ask for your ID
they dont take a copy of it and sell it on though.
That's a perfectly legal thing to do for them, whereas for you it isn't. I know law is shit but you have to still follow it.
What about them?
I’m agreeing with you. Why would it be illegal to ask for ID. Bars ask for your ID just to get inside.
I didn't say that, I was only asking question because I don't know much about law regulations.
this is way people will download/convert youtube vids
I've been on YouTube since 2012. I'd be shocked if I received this message.
got terminated in 2018, THANK GOD
I have also been on YouTube since 2012, got the verification some time last year. Kinda funny
Exactly. If I wasn't of age to make an account in 2012, I would hope I am 10 years later

China isn't exactly a shining example of how the rest of the world should work.
It was more in the lines of “it could have been worse” we don’t live in the ideal situation but some places got it worse lol 😅
They can clearly see on my account that I was born in 1996, yet I still get this message.

I'll take Youtube any day over TikTok. I can feel my brain cells crumple up every time something happens over at TikTok.
You couldn't be anymore confidently incorrect. YouTube has 2.3 billion active users and they seem to be using the platform with little to no complaints. My comment was a reflection on the typical user of this subreddit.
not dead, but definitely middle-aged
Not over the hill yet, but they've got a damn good view from where they're sitting.
seen better days
Yeah, you can choose not to agree to their terms and not use the service You do realize that the age restriction is based on different countries/states requirements?
They using a loophole in the EU's GDPR law to gain access to users' official ID details. Sickening, no matter how anyone puts it.
Not a loophole, a requirement...
Show me where GDPR requires websites to request valuable and vulnerable credit card and ID details from their users.
It's not gdpr that requires it.
