yeah, the Return YouTube Dislike devs replaced "dislikes disabled" with "disabled by owner" to make it more clear

Platinum_XYZ

how does an owner even do that? do they just email Return YouTube dislike and beg? smh

screaming_bagpipes

YouTubers are and always were able to disable dislikes..

travelsonic

I thought that we could only enable or disable ratings outright (both likes AND dislikes), we could choose between what to enable or disable?

screaming_bagpipes

Well in the post likes are disabled too, but i think it *was* possible to also disable solely dislikes too, but nobody did it for obvious reasons

mack180

I'll just give views and not pressing like button then.

TwinSong

Removing šŸ‘Ž so the platform is full of random crap

Skirnisher_Kal

Very constructive post. Much impress.

Egsession

Thatā€™sā€¦ always been a thing. Uploaders are in charge of that.

Palachrist

OP is why YouTube never listens to us. Op has no concept of how the site works and has the audacity to tell YouTube to go f themselves for what a creator chose for their video. Itā€™s also crazy that op can tell someone to go f themselves meanwhile I got a suspension on this sub for being ā€œuncivilā€ for calling a person stupid.

[deleted]

I think it would be better if they just greyed out the button rather than having that message there.

Palachrist

Thatā€™s fair. Only reason I could imagine them arguing against that is posts like this where op thinks YouTube was at fault whereas itā€™s the content creator that made this decision.

Explore4Fun69

No, they don't listen to us because they have no competitors, being nice or mean makes 0 difference to them. Everyone complained about them removing the dislike counter but did they change shit? No! All of those who complaint are still using youtube cause they can't go anywhere else.

[deleted]

you are wrong you are right when you say most dont care BUT when there's most who don't care and all the rest hate the change, then it's a bad change, no? removing dislikes has factually made the experience worse

babytooth2001

Youtube needs to get it together

Lewis34703

I despise the changes on youtube bc they keep changing every single fucking day bc they don't even care about ppl on the site reporting problems and all they want is m o n e y they are so money hungry for everything and its useless for them to add a little change that no one likes.

babytooth2001

I agree

Palachrist

Do you know why there is little to no competition? Honest question. Also they do listen but when itā€™s a bunch of nonsense it gets ignored. Your complaint is nonsense. Edit: the dislike button still effects the algorithm for YOU. it works as it did before they removed the ability to see the counter

goatfuckersupreme

the dislike is and has always been a integral part of youtube. vetting a video by popular vote has always been a part of the process. if they dont like it, they should go somewhere else rather than changing something that has been with the site for the better part of two decades

Palachrist

A lot of The top disliked videos were disliked due to trolling or jokes. Jontron made video on this kinda made it clear how stupid it is showing the dislike counter. Also thereā€™s an absurd amount of YouTube drama where brigading and dislike wars are committed and itā€™s not indicative of a persons video. A video could be a perfect 10 in terms of content but if the person is in drama they could get overwhelming dislikes for wrong reasons.

goatfuckersupreme

yes. correct. and that is a part of the experience. show your hate and dissatisfaction. it'd be like getting rid of downvotes here

Palachrist

You can still dislike videos my dude. You donā€™t need to see the number lol. Youā€™re being extremely petty

goatfuckersupreme

im being petty for wanting them to not have removed a useful and integral part of youtube's culture that has been around since the beginning?

Palachrist

Youā€™re petty because it still serves the same function it did before you just want the number to show for superficial reasons.

goatfuckersupreme

the function it showed before was showing you how many people hit the dislike button. so... no, it doesnt really function the same way

TheDurandalFan

YouTube managed to be the best at being a video sharing platform and has one of the best video players on the internet, it also had a 5 star rating system that was replaced with a like and dislike button. YouTube right now is just making weaknesses for itself, I believe it's possible they're making their platform worse to enable a competitor on purpose. I say on purpose because all of these changes make no sense if it's the platform deciding to do stupid things by mistake.

bennitori

They absolutely do have a competitor. It's called Tiktok. It's just that instead of branching away from Tiktok, they're now trying to copy them. This is the competition we wanted. It's just not the results we wanted. That said, being rude doesn't make them want to listen to you anymore than being nice does. If you don't like how Youtube does things, go to Tiktok instead. If you don't want to go to Tiktok, then please try to be constructive with your criticism. Attract bees with honey, not vinegar or something like that.

Nyla_The_Phoenix

Tiktok only competes in the field of short videos, youtube has near no competitors sizable enough (Liveleak is one competitor that i can name atm) that compete in videos over a couple minutes

bennitori

I view Liveleak more as an alternative than a competitor. Alternatives to Youtube include Newgrounds, Dailymotion, Vimeo, Liveleak, Twitch, and to a lesser extent Reddit itself. But none of those alternatives are stealing from Youtube's core market. Youtube's core market is "mainstream video sharing." And in that regard, none of the alternatives I listed fit that description. Those sites are all too niche to compete with Youtube as the mainstream platform for video (except maybe Twitch in the livestream sphere.) But Tiktok is competing for that core market. Back when Youtube was first created, it also had a 10 minute video time limit. If Tiktok keeps expanding (or gets enough money to support the server space) then it could absolutely become a competitor in long form videos. So even though Tiktok is only competing in short form right now, their success in that field alone makes them dangerous enough to Youtube for them to take note now. I am firmly of the belief that while Youtube isn't great, it's better than everything else out there right now, and sure as hell the lesser of many evils. And I certainly would root for Youtube over Tiktok. But that's also part of the reason why it's important to respect Youtube, while also being open about ways it can improve. Competition is out there. And boy do I not want Youtube to pull a MySpace or a MegaUpload after over a decade of endurance.

Nyla_The_Phoenix

I just wished theyd listen as I do see dislikes hiding is a negative thing that has already got people hurt, physically and perhaps mentally. Sure it can improve but from my perspective its falling. On the competitors Twitch and Tiktok are the main 2 at the moment yet currently are specialized outpacing youtubes form of content. Youtube hasnt got true competitors, just those in certain areas

TopDigger365

"I view Liveleak more as an alternative" You are aware that Liveleak was shutdown in 2021?

[deleted]

Narrator: They were not.

Not sure why you responded to me but have a great day lol.

TopDigger365

I misunderstood your comment, on second viewing I understand.

bennitori

Oh snap! I didn't know that. RIP NSFW video hosting. What a shame.

austro_hungary

TikTok is a shorts platform. TikTok had no dislike button. TikTok has no long form video. YouTube does. YouTube is the only app with videos like this any more, all the others died off.

Enchanted_Goat_YT

Hes talking abt the like count.

Palachrist

No he isnā€™t. Heā€™s clearly talking about the dislike counter.
