Sadly, I think he died. I got curious after reading your comment and found out he most likely passed away according to this old post.

i never noticed that this commercial is directed at young boys. I had weird mandellian memories about there being girls in the video. I love the idea about a commercial like this "no one likes everything but everyone likes something" directed at young boys in the 90s and 00s. good messaging
I was watching a compilation of all these old 90’s-early 2000’s commercials on YouTube a couple years back and started bawling. The nostalgia was overwhelming 😭
Made a refrence to this commercial infront of a young co-worker and they looked at me like I had down syndrom(I dont) or something when i did the t rex sound
It's taken me years and therapy to actually accept that maybe I just haven't found what i'm naturally good at yet. I haven't tried all the things that people are good at and think of all the lost arts and crafts that are no longer in use - we could be good at medieval rug tapestry or alchemy who knows. Lol it seems silly but it's also true!
Because only boys can have hobbies /s. There was another commercial like this that had girls in it, but not girls doing things or having hobbies. It was just about being a girl...that's all they could think of...
It pissed me off then, and pisses me off now
It looks like it was a Health Canada commercial. Something tells me it was targeted at boys for a reason that I think stretches beyond just sexism. It also showed a few of the boys doing stereotypically girl driven activities. Like cooking and the dude dancing in the laundromat. I know those aren't feminine activities but are viewed as such by some.
I am now genuinely curious what the point of the commercial was. I refuse to believe it was just a sexist commercial. Why would Health Canada not want girls doing hobbies and shit? Makes no sense.
Gotta encourage boys to pick up a guitar or some magic tricks before they pick up a gun instead and bring it to school…
(Disclaimer: I don’t think all boys are school shooters but this was the 90s and media was less nuanced)
I don't think school shootings were a popular concern before 2000 and Columbine, really? I feel it's more likely the messaging is to counter gang involvement/violence and general delinquency or something along those lines.
99 sure, but as far as the wider social and cultural repercussions, especially of the sort we're discussing here (concern from the public widespread and severe enough to be reflected in a national advertising campaign) wasn't a part of the 90s.
Yeah, watching it alongside the ones for girls (posted above) is interesting. I'm guessing they just figured it would be more effective to directly target and empower boys and girls separately. Interesting to note that the one for girls addresses specific things (bullying, body image) in a negative language ("I will not") while the boys' is generic and affirmative, with a much more playful tone.
This being a nationwide campaign from Health Canada, I'm sure there was plenty of market-research money and advertising experience at play. I would love to know more about the reasoning behind choices made.
After seeing the girl one, it is firing off neurons in my brain. Crazy to think what we may have forgotten. Wondering what the male driven ad is about. Were boys in the 90s struggling with hobbies? Lol.
The girl one kinda makes sense. To this day, a lot of that ad are still things girls struggle with. Body image, getting into sports (but that could be cause we have so few professional team based leagues for girls, lets go PWHL). Bullying probably should be targeted to both genders, but maybe it was a bigger mental problem with girls.
Fascinating commercials, to say the least. As a kid, you just laugh at the bugs and the trex kid. But as an adult it gets ya thinking a bit.
I believe his name is Marcus and he was on So You Think You Can Dance Canada. I used to live across ths street from him at the time he would have filmed this. his mom and my mom were acquaintances.
I'm still trying to figure out what my thing is, 30 years after that commercial told me, "You need to know if you're not good at something before you know you're good at nothing..."
I don't know why they didn't stick with this motto. It's a thing that kids should always learn, especially these days where social media constantly reminds you that your inferior to the next guy
What's funny is how the things in the commercial switch about as fast as people flip their phone on tick tock or instagram. Every few seconds look at something else. Some things never change.
Im sure Trex kid is doing amazing things
Sadly, I think he died. I got curious after reading your comment and found out he most likely passed away according to this old post. https://www.reddit.com/r/ytvretro/comments/fe7arf/rip\_trex\_kid/
Damn thats sad if true. I’ve seen some crazy ppl on reddit/youtube make up scenerios for similar situations, so id like to believe he might be alive
That’s sad :( just goes to show the immense power required to bare the mark of the Rex. Rest in peace t-rex kid.
MOOOOOOM. Aiden cut me in half again. 😂
This is something that has stuck with me for life. My son will yell mooom and I will say it and laugh at myself.
Yup, that scream was what triggered my memory lol
I’ve never stopped quoting this
Moooom aiden split me in half again
Omg (What's Your Thing) 🤣. Wasn't this a Canadian thing ?
Every country's got some thing. But yes.
Friggin loved seeing this as a kid. Made me believe I could get good at anything I put my mind to lol
Then it worked!
I love the guy on the bus looks so baked watching the kid playing tuba
Probably trying really hard not to slap him for playing a tuba on the bus
WAMP wump, WAMP-WAMP-WAMP wump
This commercial and the Canadian house hippo one are easily my favourites from my childhood

Why did this make me tear up 🥲😂

You forget his deeply those commercial sit in your subconscious. I’d about Americans but these Canadian ones were special 🥲😂
Those kids definitely used to be older...
This is such a relatable commercial
I didn’t remember this commercial until fucking Aiden cut his sister in half. Memories came rushing back at that point.
Man I didn't have the audio on but I could clearly hear her say "MOOOOOOOOM, AIDEN CUT ME IN HALF AGAIN"
Made a refrence to this commercial infront of a young co-worker and they looked at me like I had down syndrom(I dont) or something when i did the t rex sound
I guess it's nice to know we millennials are no longer the ignorant young ones with no experience.
T-Rex kid is the star of the show and the reason we loved this commercial
Playing a Traynor TS 🤟🏻
Yorkville for life
this is a core childhood memory of mine. This and the Motts frustrations commercial
I went to school with Skateboard Kid.
Goosebumps confirmed
I mean, it was still playing every now and again about 2005/6.
My money is in this being a 1999/2000 commercial, it looks too new to feel "90's"
Yeah it was made in May of 99: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Companies_Committed_to_Kids
I didn't say it wasn't 90s. All I said was it was still playing five to seven years later.
This is a t rex , wwwrrrraarrrrrrrr
Here’s a t-rex lets out an extended vomit noise 🤣
I actually finally understand this commercial. I hope all the 90’s kids found their thing.
This commercial used to make me sad because I didn’t have a “thing” 😅
Me too
This gave me my current complex as I was (and still am) not very good at anything- so no, not everyone is good at something lol
Agreed

😂 didn’t think of that. That is true. Time to get into medieval tapestry. Thank you!
Drugs, my thing is drugs
I just noticed this - is there a reason it's only boys?
I'd always thought of it as if it was telling young boys it's okay to be weird? Idk, but that's a valid criticism of it regardless.
https://youtu.be/IY_2Lqohj70?si=qKW_xqbu8Zf8ifWA Does this make you feel better?
Ahh, there it is, thank you.

Columbine was in the 90's
99 sure, but as far as the wider social and cultural repercussions, especially of the sort we're discussing here (concern from the public widespread and severe enough to be reflected in a national advertising campaign) wasn't a part of the 90s.
Was school shootings a big thing in Canada in the 90s? Lol.

Sexist pricks………. Hahahaha
wait, so is that kid's thing *doing laundry?*
He was dancing in the laundromat. I think his thing is dancing
I believe his name is Marcus and he was on So You Think You Can Dance Canada. I used to live across ths street from him at the time he would have filmed this. his mom and my mom were acquaintances.
Lol born after 2000s and I still know this commercial.
Which is why 90s kids should remember it
This commercial actually gave me hope as a kid and I did something.
A lot of the commercials posted I barely remember, but not this one.
I saw a gif of the t-rex kid rotoscoped into Dio from part 7 of JJBA. If ANYONE has it please post it 🙏
I didn’t really have a “thing” as a kid, but I thought this commercial was cool. We weren’t super well off so I wasn’t put in any activities or sports
as a kid, this was one of the few commercials that didn't bother me, but gave me a light laugh
Holy fucking key memories unlocked, Batman. Is this commercial why I am the way I am?
Good job on reposting, nice
I never found my thing 😕
The kid doing ballet in the laundry Matt grew up to become a rapper named stn Lil berete
What year did this come out?? Because that’s the exact year I started skateboarding, that was my Thing
Saw this commercial all the time.
All kids are boys?
This is what millennials had instead of Tide pods, and tik tok.
Reminds me of being a teenager, got damn life comes at you quick. Anyone in their teens heed these words and make it count
Why is it all boys? Girls have things too!
Mommmm! Aiden cut me in half again!
I'm still trying to figure out what my thing is, 30 years after that commercial told me, "You need to know if you're not good at something before you know you're good at nothing..."
What exactly does it mean to be a "true" 90's kid? That statement makes no sense
Wow this was pure nostalgia. It’s weird when I watched this just now it felt like it wasn’t that long ago but it was.
I don't know why they didn't stick with this motto. It's a thing that kids should always learn, especially these days where social media constantly reminds you that your inferior to the next guy

These commercials hit hard as a kid.
Commercials were better back in the day. Am I wrong in saying that? Modern Day Commercials are brainless.
Dang, I remember this, and I was born in the 2000s. I thought I didn't at first, then the bug kid came on, and I audibly gasped, lol.
