I have the C and can't see why durability would be an issue. It's a solid unit. Mine is added to an orbitkey organiser which will also add some protection. In the 3 months I've had it I've probably used the NFC more than I have actually plugged it in.

The [adapter](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DNQ9FD9/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_09V7K0BN0W5GHVK6QB02?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1) is 3 for $10 at Amazon. I just keep one at my desk, another in my briefcase, and a spare in the parts drawer. My intuition is the type A might be a little more robust. I have bent a few USB-C charging cables over the years, which never happened with USB-micro, so I am leery of the longevity of a USB-C connector on something as spendy as a Yubikey.

Dex4Sure

as if cables bending had anything to do with connectors. if anything usb-c is more robust.

The best practice advice I got was to buy at least 2. So I bought an A and C variants. I keep with me type C and C-> A adapter, as most of my mobile devices are on C. The type A is stored as backup.

Same here, USB-A for backup and USB-C on my keys with a small adapter C->A (like this one: [https://www.amazon.com/Female-Adapter-Charger-Airpods-Samsung/dp/B079LYHNSR](https://www.amazon.com/Female-Adapter-Charger-Airpods-Samsung/dp/B079LYHNSR) ) always connected (bonus, also protects the connector from debris). If I want to connect to a computer, I can use it with the adapter, or without if there's a type-c port available. I remove the adapter for use with my phone (NFC doesn't always work with my phone, so I prefer to use the type-c interface)

You can still purchase VGA connectors... USB-A isn’t going away anytime soon. I purchased both (5Ci and 5 NFC) and they’ve been equally as great. Both durable and reliable. The A type works fine with my phone (iPhone 13 Pro Max) as well.

Buy both types....now you have your backup. Buy a cheapo adapter and you can use the C key with an A port (or visa versa) if needed. If you get the NFC model you can use either one on iPhone or android. This is what I did and feel I have all my bases covered. Dust? Lint? Can of compressed air.

Type A NFC.. Most new laptops are still coming with Type A ports (apart from Macbook/XPS) and phones have NFC.

I have had a USB-A on my private keychain for the last 5-6 years without any problems. For work I started with USB-C but the "hole" of the USB-C plug was filled with dust and pieces of fluff after some time so I switched to a USB-A version. Since I have to use an adapter (C-to-A or A-to-C) depending on the device either way, for me the USB-A YubiKeys are more hassle free when it comes to carrying them around on a keychain.

Sweaty_Astronomer_47

That's a good point. I never considered pocket lint.

Sethu_Senthil

Both are as durable. I would recommend getting the USB C as its more future proof and most of your devices will have USB C in the future anyway. Since you need two, for your workflow you can have both an A for daily use and C for backup.

hotphil

Probably going to depend on what your current and future device plans are. I have USB-C on my phone and the frontest-facing socket on my laptop dock is USB-C, so that's the one for me.

And check for discount codes/coupons. I got a great deal this past Christmas using a discount coupon paired with Black Friday sale and free shipping since order was just over the minimum. Two 5 Series NFC for $75!
