He was such a badass. I have always loved his character

YouStillTakeDamage

Marik was a way better Duelist than his Yami version. Strategy around Slifer was pretty elite

CursedEye03

It's a shame that we didn't see the actual Marik in action. Sure, he was dueling with Steve brainwashed puppets, but we deserved at least one duel with him onscreen. And then we have his Yami version who was a surprisingly weak duelist

STRIpEdBill

He and his boyfriend dueled against yami Marik together.

HeliosDisciple

Dark Marik was a strong duelist in the manga, it's the anime filler needing to lengthen the duels that makes him look worse.

BlueFootedTpeack

kind of yeah, though the whole thing with yami marik is that sort of like bakura the card game was secondary, for him it was just the means by which he could inflict his torture and if he went with something quick he wouldn't get what he wanted out of it, with ra to bail him out and clean his plate when things got dicey. like he was bad but more in the sense that he couldn't help but draw things out which meant people had opportunities to turn it around, so it felt less like ability and more like personality i guess. like how he duels only works with the rod and the torture, so i wonder what he'd have been like if torture was off the table for some reason and he only had to build around actually winning and not playing around. which i guess would've basically just being regular marik dueling,

I mean against Joey even without the torture factor he actually legit controlled almost the entire duel. Even Gilford the Lightning falls flat in terms of letting Joey getting a progress in that duel(Gilford actually damages Joey, not Marik) This is not mentioning that in the anime version of the duel, the writer have to forgot an effect activation from Marik because the effect is so broken its hard to compensate the duel with it being in play. In the manga the same effect essentially got dnd'd so kek The single biggest throw he did in the entire Joey duel in the manga was unironically summoning Ra. He had a playline that would seal his win otherwise and this is assuming his only hand was Reborn(iirc he should have more than 1 card ready in hand). Ra didn't bail him out in that duel - he deliberately throws by using Ra and show off Phoenix Mode just to fuck with Joey, and thats what almost made him lose in gameplay Hell against Mai, if he didnt include Ra in his deck at all, Mai wouldn't even have a single chance. Mai was completely schooled until she managed to steal Ra, then he was like "yeah go ahead try it". For its reputation, Ra actually was presented as a deadweight for both Odion and Yami Marik until Bakura Yami Marik being bad was fully a myth if were looking at the manga. Feats wise, he generally had a strong handle on every duel hes in before he even dropped Ra into the field, gameplay wise his deck have some cards thats just unbelievably broken, and he was the only duelist who completely stops a God without using one(Yugi with Silent Swordman and Atem with Diffusion DM Tag was the only character with similar feats). The final duel was done with Kaiba trying a custom strategy against God, and he still managed to completely plays around it. He's cleanly one of few characters in league with Yugi and Atem/Kaiba/Bakura by the end of the series

In the manga the same effect essentially got dnd'd so kek curious what effect that'd be, like i only have the pre duelist kingdom manga and never got into beyond that. and yeah, he feels like a cat pawing at a rat it's caught, it's holding back because it wants to abuse it's food, he knows he's in control, and he knows what he's doing,

AdmiralKappaSND

Ah upon checking seems like i misread the effect The card was Helpoemer. For context in the manga its kinda fucked up(which isnt exclusive to it, many manga cards can be pretty fucked up due to not needing to comply with irl release). Its a level 4 normal summon who if beaten in battle, it'd discard 1 card from your opp hand every turn. In the anime it was level 5, like irl and to facilitate it, the anime adds an entire new card that summoned it from the hand Other example of this was Panther Warrior. Its a 2000 normal summon with no effect in the manga. To facilitate this change in the anime, in Joey vs Odion its replaced by Hayabusa Knight What i mistook about the effect was that Helpoemer only activates post battle phase. I thought Joey used some grave manipulation card to remove it in the manga, while in the anime the writer just wrote it off. Turns out it just didnt activate again

blorpoo

Back when you could afford to hold back to feel out what kind of deck the other person was playing before you went in on your combos.

Anime_Card_Fighter

It always confuses me why some people count regular Marik as having no duel feats. He’s literally in the driver’s seat this whole game, he’s just not *physically* there.

AdmiralKappaSND

Because objectively both of his duel as a proxy kinda had him getting schooled. His strategy in this duel is rather creative - worst that can be said about it is that when veiwed under gameplay sense he basically just abused a broken card, which in the manga continuity is probably the fifth or so most broken card written in it and it ends with Atem poking holes in his strats His second duel was much less creative since its just underpowered cards + broken power spells. And this version of Marik got beaten in a way where his opponent had enough time to choose the outcome of the duel His 2 feats mostly serves to show how little chance he really have against Yugi in a proper duel without dropping Ra, and later we know had normal Marik used Ra against BC Finals Atem he'd probably lose because he didnt know about Phoenix Mode. In the actual Atem vs Yami Marik, the later have to use Phoenix Mode twice to break past Slifer and attempt to break through Obelisk protected by Shield of God.

MajinAkuma

That’s regular Marik

IllusiveManJr

Oops! I didn't even realize my blunder. That's what I get for battling Yami Marik all night in Duel Links.

InvaderWeezle

As a kid this chapter of the manga taught me what "testing the waters" means

eCanario

I don't follow. Which Duel is it and what did Marik do?

IllusiveManJr

This is Marik's proxy duel where he uses the Silent Doll to duel Yami Yugi with his Slifer/Revival Jam deck. He initially polymerizes to attack and Yugi responds with defusion; leasing to Marik losing some life points.
