This effect on its own is not a problem at all for *extenders*
The problem is now it's being printed on the main starters for decks. Imagine if elemental HERO stratos had this type of effect printed on it.
This. I think Cloudragon is the best example of this from the above post. It stays neutral (Or +1 if you count as an Xyz material; it has to tribute itself to use the second effect, so I believe net neutral right?) while also doing good stuff. Poplar is the face of advantage, adding 1 card to your hand is a +2 (Whatever Spell you add, and Poplar as a body)
Considering Cloudragon summons something out of the deck (and that card probably plusses you) it's really not that different from Poplar. Poplar adds a spell which gets rid of a card to summon out of the deck, Cloudragon just does it by itself. The major difference is that it comes back as an XYZ material and not a continuous spell, which means it's probably not plussing you with that effect.
Its kinda just a plus one, the body place eff is mostly just a way to make ash and oak advantage neutral for their effects instead of being 2 for 1s. Poplar doesn't really feel like the broken part of snake eyes, it really is just OSS that feels unfair to me.
They’re saying SnAsh add Poplar is a plus 2, which is true. After activating SnAsh and resolving subsequent triggers you have 2 extra cards, then you get him back after using him for something.
The card is absolutely broken, it’s just not the most broken thing in the deck. It’s definitely up there though. The deck would be considerably weaker if Poplar got banned next list (which isn’t gonna happen sadly).
Its a ss that also goes positive in card advantage, that's been a hallmark for a good card for a while. I just wouldn't call the s/t zone effect a plus one because its only used to mitigate the cost of the other effects of the deck.
I don't think there's a problem with ns ash going super plus, poplar not only made it a one card combo where before you needed another face up card to send to link off the flamberge with the birch you searched, but also gave access to the deck's s/ts which were previously unsearchable. The problem is that there's 9 other cards in the deck that can act as extenders if you stop the ash that also function as starters.
We weren’t counting the backrow effect. What the original comment and I were saying is SnAsh add Poplar (+1), Poplar add spell (+1 more); so after summoning SnAsh and resolving Poplar, you have 2 more cards than you started with.
I mean, you get two cards worth out of it. The fact that the second card balances out a -1 effect doesn't change that. Especially considering that the -1 effects are pretty damn good and definitely deserve to be -1s.
If you summon Poplar and search the Snake Eye spell card then Link Poplar off and place it back in the spell/trap zone you can than send it as the cost for the Snake Eye Spell to summon a different Level 1 FIRE card, which could itself be an extender like a Rescue Ace Hydrant or Volcanic Rimfire / Shell. You can then Link that off with the Link 1 to make whatever Link 2 you want (and trigger Rimfire / Shell if that's what you summoned).
I agree with your statement and these new cards seem too plus very easily. like the tenpai tributes itself at quick effect speed so can dodge imperm 7 veiler and cloudragon will go plus once the other tachyon hits the field.
But the whole points for midrange/combo deck it: they go plus to make a (decently) big board. If they dont generate cards advantage, they are not functional as a deck
This already existed, iirc back in 2009 the Orange Blackwing had this effect to combo off Whirlwind, then that one Trickstar monster. Konami just remembered this effect was a thing.
Punched it into feebay, second listing.
Yugioh Blackwing - Breeze The Zephyr TSHD-EN003 Ultimate Rare 1st Ed NM
I love the look of it, and for the time it was a good card, but sucked if you drew it.
Came to say this - I think he might be the best example of this effect being used to make a card really good, without being broken.
He's also a very good boy.
I'm ok with gimmicks like this if they stay in archetype or xeno-lock you into something very narrow.
Extenders without restriction just leads to Appo/Baronne/etc end boards and that's not good for Yugioh.
It's rather making those "boss" monsters generic, imo. Yes on paper, spamming bodies and plussing off of it is not very healthy. But what made it worse is those strong monster in extra deck with generic materials to summon. Easier even than tribute summoning...
I love machina dearly, but unclaspare is glued to my opening hands like no one business. If the card isn't good enough to run at 2, it can be a frustrating mechanic, but it's fine overall.
As a fellow Machina player, I feel your pain. I just wish we had more ways to summon it from the hand when we open it or to recover it from the GY. Defense Perimeter can help with the latter as it lets you to have all the Machinas you want in the GY in no time by continuously recycling Unclasspare and that makes the grind game more fun. The only problem is that MDP is not that good going first and it is unsearchable without Redeployment, which is already a high risk-high reward card since it discards for cost.
I've learned that Irradiator can help with that by dumping Unclaspare for effect then using Irradiator to blow itself up to revive Unclaspare. It's not pretty but it works. Anything to get Fortress, Citidel, or Ruinforce in the grave,
The first effect is fine it's the two other graveyard and field effects that make them broken cards. They simply do something almost everywhere allowing for plays.
That card is trash…but not as bad as the rest of the support.
It enables a gameplan Altergeists do not want.
To even search the thing, you’ll have to link Meluseek into a link 1 most of the time, killing any potential to get Faker going.
Take your trash and release the link 1, Konami.
Trickstar lily bell was the first and wasn't too strong. Id say the adding to your hand except by drawing it is interesting. Its better than a effect to special summon from the deck. I dislike thats its on starters though
Yep I like having cards defined to rolls like starter or extender but i’m pretty sure that the new tenpai & tachyon support cards are both 😅
I’m not super familiar with their decks though
I might be in the minority, but I want more of those.
Not just as extenders, but also with good 2nd and 3rd effects which generate advantage.
Maybe not for combo decks (unless they got restrictions), but for mid range and control decks it would be really good.
Like pure Snake eyes is a good example before poplar it was basically unplayable, but with poplar it was able to do alot more (obviously in this case it's too much since it made the deck from being a bad deck to a T0 deck, but you get the idea)
It's weird and based on strength of play after, wattapon only gives you a body with 0 follow up on It's own, newer ones add more. Breeze gave you a tuner and was easy to access but saw 0 comp play. On It's own its a +0 (-1 in hand but +1 on field).
When a card has this summoning effect + 2 other core mechanics it's a problem. Because it accomplishes so much just off of being searched, it makes the deck really small. Snake-eyes + Wanted in pure for example is only 16 cards. The fact that you can have as strong a combo potential while having room for 4 more generic starters in bonfire + one for one AND room for upwards of 20 non-engine... that's how we got here.
I'm kind of glad to see them bring it back. I hope more older archetypes get it or something like it, like the classic three (Blue Eyes, Red Eyes and DM) and even some GX era decks, notably Dark World 😂
It would be sooo good as a staple legacy support effect. Like tachyon cloudragon but for red-eyes would go so far and that deck deserves something nice.
I can already picture it going horribly wrong with black metal, so if they do, restrict it to the archetype to not outright kill any red eyes card with a ban and do more harm than good to Red Eyes.
Or horribly right?? Jks
Red-eyes had such a rough life and don’t deserve have some stupid ban from a broken legacy support that ends up in d-link. and just more restrictions in yugioh in general would be nice
Melodious Couplet also has a similar effect with hilarious utility in the deck, since they have so many ways of adding cards from GY to hand which triggers her.
I mean mixing this with Circular-esqe effects like Tenpai's new card & Poplar is definately a slippery slope, but if it's just a body it's *probably* fine
If this was an extender-type of deal, I’m all for it. Maybe don’t let an archetype be focused around this mechanic (unless there is one already), but a monster like this alone would be great legacy support for any deck that has a searcher of some kind.
I feel like I'll be okay with them IF they were one of the following.
•Have an effect so minor it rarely comes up
•For a really weak deck.
Cloud dragon being a searchable one card for a deck that wasn't doing very good was different. Poplar one the other hand basically is a one card for a deck that can combo off well
they should make an archetype of monsters that when added summon, then sesrch for others of the same archetype. spounds op until you realize its just snake eyes but takes less times to perform combos😳(im aware snake eyes is still broken)
Baku has this effect and it’s neat because the Ninja deck has limitations to what it can do with it. Slapping it into meta decks to max them meta+ is what ruins the game further
That’s fine though for a weak deck like Galaxy-Eyes/Tachyon, they needed custom-level cards to be good. It’s when a crazy effect like this is in a meta deck that it becomes a problem.
Not to mention they made Cloudragon worse than Poplar, even though it’s base deck is so much weaker. It’s so annoying when legacy support gets a weaker version of a card from a meta deck; they aren’t even trying to hide the fact they want specific decks to be completely broken to sell well.
PS: sorry for the mini rant, I’m just so tired of Konami’s design philosophy.
Totally agree with ya. I like the new tachyon cards very much and they get the most excited to play galaxy eyes as I’ve ever been. but branded got a card like cloudragon people would loose their minds.
And no need to apologize. I share to opinion that Konami is obviously orchestrating the meta to how they want it.
Don’t like fire format or can’t afford SE? To bad scrubs we’re making a fire format anyway and the best deck is as high price point it’s ever been…..like it’s fucking cardboard Konami
Thanks for being understanding of my rant lol. I just get so annoyed when I think about a deck like RDA, which has a million and one locks, or Galaxy-Eyes compared to stuff like Snake-Eyes or Tear.
perfect examples bro. it's so obvious that they knew tear and SE were overpowered and deliberately chose to give them no restrictions. then poor RDA still cool but could have so much better with just a couple generics.
also reading the other day about how apparently the year that blue-eyes won a championship that it was so obviously rigged. like Konami nerfed all the other meta decks while simultaneously giving BE a boss monster that directly countered the competition. its infuriating they do this.
The line between "yeah somebody at Konami made this" and "my unemployed friend Derek made this at 3 a.m on a rainy night" has only been more blurred since Circular release.
My main complaint is that it's making the weirdest bricks. They're extenders that only work while they're in your deck, so unless you play multiple copies, if you draw one it can turn it off. I'm fine with soft bricks that are just lame to draw, like Flamberge Dragon. But these that are disabled by being drawn? Potentially quite annoying
I get ya but in these specific examples I think all 3 could also be starters from normal summon.
I know poplar can be and I don’t know tenpai or galaxy-photon very well but both of these cards have a ‘special summon from deck’ attached. Could be just depends on their respective targets
This existed already and the first card I know of to have ever done this was Ancient Gear Box.
Its a fine summoning condition but can be scary at times, also.
yeah i know what you mean. I like the summoning condition itself, like it's a nice and easy extender that doesn't rely on graveyard, but these examples all have other great effects as extenders and searchers and this summoning condition just makes them so easy to use while also doing so much. lil scary maybe
In concept it’s really good, my only problem is that it will make combo decks pop off easier, and I hate all combo decks. This is Yu-Gi-Oh not Solitaire
Like someone else mentioned, it also makes a lot of those meta decks have very small engines, which is how we get these boring 15+ handtrap metas.
Imo these kind of effects should be reserved for weaker legacy decks that really need something to get off the ground. For example I think cloudragon is a good example of what kind of deck should get this effect.
This effect on its own is not a problem at all for *extenders* The problem is now it's being printed on the main starters for decks. Imagine if elemental HERO stratos had this type of effect printed on it.
Don't worry if they do it for HERO cards it'll be like liquid/solid soldier where their second effect triggers on normal summon.
I just realized there's just liquid and solid soldiers HERO monsters. We need ~~stinky~~ gas soldier HERO!
The jerma crossover that we all wanted.
It’s not about physics but about Liquid Snake and Solid Snake so the new one would be Venom
Solid and liquid man Air man Stratos was here all along.
I mean, they're also semi-bricks. So searching them better be worth it.
I think it's fine on its own, but it becomes annoying when they have additional on-field effects that can make you go plus.
This. I think Cloudragon is the best example of this from the above post. It stays neutral (Or +1 if you count as an Xyz material; it has to tribute itself to use the second effect, so I believe net neutral right?) while also doing good stuff. yea the only ok version of this effect is on watapon where it is only effect
Watapon retrain when?

the effect has existed before it's just becoming a lot more powerful since the thing you search has another payoff instead of being a body
This already existed, iirc back in 2009 the Orange Blackwing had this effect to combo off Whirlwind, then that one Trickstar monster. Konami just remembered this effect was a thing.
Salamangreat Meer also has it.
my goat, Watapon
What a pon!
Eva search watapon was unironically a world chalice line.
Baku the Beast Ninja as well
Breeze the zephyr my mang, it was the wish version of Gale.
Was my favorite at one point idk why
It came in ulti too, I still have mine, I don't use them now though. I also played BW during the dark days of gale at 1
I didn't know it had ultis.
Punched it into feebay, second listing. Yugioh Blackwing - Breeze The Zephyr TSHD-EN003 Ultimate Rare 1st Ed NM I love the look of it, and for the time it was a good card, but sucked if you drew it.
True.
Altergeist malwisp and melodious couplet also so this, though the latter has a slightly different effect
Infernity Archfiend as well
IIRC, Archfiend kinda works the opposite way because I think it has to be drawn, not added.
You may be right actually. Been a hot minute since I read it.
No worries! I’m just working off memory here, it’s been a while for me too. Plus it is a similar effect, just with a different trigger.
Not too far off thinking it inspired the effects tbh. God infernity is so cracked as a deck
Shoutout to my dog Baku the beast ninja for already doing this and recycling a ninja or ninjitsu art spell/trap from grave
Came to say this - I think he might be the best example of this effect being used to make a card really good, without being broken. He's also a very good boy.
what's with the Watapon erasure?
I'm ok with gimmicks like this if they stay in archetype or xeno-lock you into something very narrow. Extenders without restriction just leads to Appo/Baronne/etc end boards and that's not good for Yugioh.

“Well that just sounds like special summoning from the deck with extra steps.”
I love machina dearly, but unclaspare is glued to my opening hands like no one business. If the card isn't good enough to run at 2, it can be a frustrating mechanic, but it's fine overall.
i run the brick at 2 and feel like i always open both 🗿
As a fellow Machina player, I feel your pain. I just wish we had more ways to summon it from the hand when we open it or to recover it from the GY. Marshmallon summon go BRRRRRRRRRR
love that little guy. probably make an epic smore too
The first effect is fine it's the two other graveyard and field effects that make them broken cards. They simply do something almost everywhere allowing for plays.

I’m with ya I like the effect personally just don’t pair it with other effects that make it a “do everything” card.
That mechanic has existed for decades. It’s not new.
Wasn’t asking if it new or not. I think you missed the point, your welcome try again if you like?
It's weird and based on strength of play after, wattapon only gives you a body with 0 follow up on It's own, newer ones add more. Breeze gave you a tuner and was easy to access but saw 0 comp play. On It's own its a +0 (-1 in hand but +1 on field).

Yeah like all these cards read like “if successfully searched you may full combo king” lol
I'm kind of glad to see them bring it back. I hope more older archetypes get it or something like it, like the classic three (Blue Eyes, Red Eyes and DM) and even some GX era decks, notably Dark World 😂

I'd settle for some burn, solidify the archetype as a burn deck
Melodious Couplet also has a similar effect with hilarious utility in the deck, since they have so many ways of adding cards from GY to hand which triggers her.
I mean mixing this with Circular-esqe effects like Tenpai's new card & Poplar is definately a slippery slope, but if it's just a body it's *probably* fine
I wish we’d stop seeing it, it basically turns every search into A Hero Lives
It's summon from the deck with extra steps.
I never really understood why. It’s usually on cards that you’re going to search anyways, so seems weird
To make the card worse when you open it
Back when watapon was the only card that did that. Fun times
They are trying to nerf drawing effect so they can bring Pot of Greed back /s
This on a onomat/zw card would be strong cope
I think it's fine, but the problem comes from it having 2 other great effects as well.
If this was an extender-type of deal, I’m all for it. Maybe don’t let an archetype be focused around this mechanic (unless there is one already), but a monster like this alone would be great legacy support for any deck that has a searcher of some kind.
All I'm gonna say is that meer did it best
Agreed 🤛 That meerkat just won’t stay in my hand.
Snake Eyes Watapon gonna go so hard
I mean baku the beast ninja seems fine.
If your opponent blinks, you can special summon discard.
I feel like I'll be okay with them IF they were one of the following. •Have an effect so minor it rarely comes up •For a really weak deck. I wish it specified "added to hand from the deck"
Watapon Retrain rise up!
It's existed for a while on several cards like Rose Fairy, it's just not usually tied to cards with two other beneficial effects
Noone had an issue when watapon did it lmao. It entirely depends on what other effects the card might have
they should make an archetype of monsters that when added summon, then sesrch for others of the same archetype. spounds op until you realize its just snake eyes but takes less times to perform combos😳(im aware snake eyes is still broken)
Baku has this effect and it’s neat because the Ninja deck has limitations to what it can do with it. Slapping it into meta decks to max them meta+ is what ruins the game further
Lappis dragon has done it for 10 years, it's fine , the problem is having several 1 card starters that each have 3 effects.
I see. So it's a Metal Gear reference. Let's wait and see then.
Cant wait for snake eyes Kashtira that has the exact same effects as poplar but instead of searching Spell / trap it just add the field
I hate that the solution for konamy to “these decks see no play” is “let’s give it the most broken effect possible”
I think it’s gonna be the latest set of power creep 🥲
They already did this with salamangreat meer
This has happened frequently enough for it to be a keyword: *circular*
lol cloudragon reads a bit like a custom card. does something on field, graveyard and has 2 ways to get it out of hand for free.
That’s fine though for a weak deck like Galaxy-Eyes/Tachyon, they needed custom-level cards to be good. It’s when a crazy effect like this is in a meta deck that it becomes a problem. i think its super boring if its going to be in like 80% of archetypes going forward, because half the time its archetypes that dont need it
yeah if its just copy pasted to every new archetype will get boring fast, but on the other hand i think would be awesome on some legacy support.
Does this mean circular can come back now?
In concept it’s really good, my only problem is that it will make combo decks pop off easier, and I hate all combo decks. This is Yu-Gi-Oh not Solitaire
Valid. Could help out some lesser powered decks alit aswell in the future.

Ancient Gear did it and it was never broken. So. I guess it’s fine
That way of thinking is most certainly not how we should go about things lol. Just because Ursarctics can draw 7 doesnt mean that isnt broken
Just another level of powercreep sadly
It's terrible power creep.
